An innocent child was charged with the murder of his classmate - becoming Canada's youngest death row inmate. It wasn't until The Innocence Project became involved that Steven Truscott finally had his conviction overturned almost 5 decades later. Professor Gail Anderson is Canada's first-ever full-time forensic entomologist and has been working in the field for nearly 35 years. Her work is dedicated to the study of insects, and what they can reveal about miscarriages of justice.  In this discussion with host Kathryn Fox, Gail details her involvement in exonerating Steven Truscott, as well as Kirstin Blaise Lobato, who spent 16 years in prison for a crime she didn't commit. This week, I'm honored to be joined by not one but two brilliant screenwriters, Larry Karaszewski & Daniel Waters. Larry Karaszewski & his writing/directing/producing partner Scott Alexander are best known for writing unusual true stories such as the films ED WOOD, THE PEOPLE VS. LARRY FLYNT, MAN ON THE MOON, AUTO FOCUS, BIG EYES, DOLEMITE IS MY NAME, & the hit television miniseries THE PEOPLE VS. OJ SIMPSON: AMERICAN CRIME STORY. The team has won Emmys, Golden Globes, Producers, & Writers Guild Awards. Additionally, Larry is also a former Governor & Vice President of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences. Born in Ohio & raised in Indiana, Daniel Waters is the Edgar award-winning screenwriter of the 1988 cult classic HEATHERS starring Winona Ryder & Christian Slater. Additionally, the man who wrote or co-wrote the films BATMAN RETURNS, HUDSON HAWK, THE ADVENTURES OF FORD FAIRLANE, DEMOLITION MAN, & more, he's also the writer-director of HAPPY CAMPERS & SEX & DEATH 101. Best friends & movie buddies since their teenage years in Indiana, in the fourth season of Watch With Jen, the two joined me to dissect the films of director Michael Ritchie, & this year, they're back to take us on another trip through the films of the 1970s, courtesy of actor Jan-Michael Vincent whose luscious blonde hair & laid back approach made him one of the most popular up-and-coming stars of the era. Although initially, we agreed on five films, including BUSTER & BILLIE, THE MECHANIC, WHITE LINE FEVER, THE WORLD'S GREATEST ATHLETE, & VIGILANTE FORCE, Larry & Dan made it their mission to do as much extra credit as possible, watching everything from obscure TV movies like TRIBES & SANDCASTLES to bigger hits like HOOPER & more. Along the way, we discuss Dan's issues with JMV in the '70s & this dream (or nightmare) he had where I ruined the vibe of his party, Larry's decision to watch two JMV movies on the ceiling under laughing gas at the dentist, & much, much more. What can I say? This conversation is a journey - a rollicking, thoughtful, & very engaging journey - & you're sure to love it.Originally Posted on Patreon (8/20/24) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/110417546Theme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music Archive Shop Watch With Jen logo Merchandise in Logo Designer Kate Gabrielle's Threadless ShopDonate to the Pod via Ko-fi

Watch the video version at: YouTube.com/CadeThomas Double Feature Movie Club is a weekly movie review show with a retro vibe. Two movies. Three people. One rambling conversation. Each film is our first time watching them. We often go off-topic. The Wizard of Lies is a 2017 American television biopic film directed by Barry Levinson and written by Sam Levinson, Sam Baum, and John Burnham Schwartz,[1] based on the 2011 non-fiction book of the same name by Diana B. Henriques. The film stars Robert De Niro as businessman and fraudster Bernie Madoff, Michelle Pfeiffer as his wife Ruth Madoff, and Alessandro Nivola as their older son Mark Madoff. It aired on HBO on May 20, 2017. Big Eyes is a 2014 American biographical drama film directed by Tim Burton, written by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, and starring Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz. It is about the relationship between American artist Margaret Keane and her second husband, Walter Keane, who, in the 1950s and 1960s, took credit for Margaret's phenomenally popular paintings of people with big eyes.

Should Instagram Get to Censor Art?   Whether we like it or not, they are.   Their guidelines explicitly allow for real world art that depicts sexual content. Some artists are being banned completely.   A good example: The Little Black Gallery in London had their entire account deleted for a congratulatory post that had a silhouette image of a woman.   Artists need a platform to be seen.   I ran into an issue when I tried to promote my watercolor class Go Figure. This course will help you paint realistic and natural human figure, and my very non-explicit image was considered too explicit for Instagram.   Click here for access to my Go Figure class.  Why Art is Now Boring   Do you like art that's interesting, pushing boundaries or boring vanilla art? I know you all want interesting art. So why has art become boring?   Journalist, Michelle Goldberg wrote about the new book by W. David Marx Status and Culture: How Our Desire for Social Rank Creates Taste, Identity, Art, Fashion, and Constant Change  Goldberg shares that the book highlights how we use art and fashion to demonstrate our social status, but the author no longer thinks it's no longer working. Why? Several reasons but one of the biggest is the ability we have to fake our “image” with filters or by photoshopping ourselves next to a private plane.   For links to this and other great reads check out my book club list.   Grab my book club reading list here!   The Dark Side of Matisse  The Red Studio Exhibit shows the famous Matisse painting of his studio. The exhibit pulls out each piece of art and other things in the room.   It's made me aware of a backstory that I didn't know until now. The nude painting depicted is likely that of Matisse's daughter who would have been 16 or 17 at the time.   It makes me see this in a new light. What do you think?   Join the conversation and let me know what you think on Instagram.  Big Eyes: The Art of Margaret Keane  Margaret D. H. Keane (born Peggy Doris Hawkins, September 15, 1927 – June 26, 2022) was an American artist known for her paintings of subjects with big eyes. She mainly painted women, children, or animals in oil or mixed media.   Her husband was originally credited for her work, but she claimed ownership after they divorced. They had to have a “paint off” in court so she could prove it was her work!   A resurgence of interest in Margaret Keane's work followed the release of Tim Burton's 2014 biopic Big Eyes which I highly recommend.   If you are struggling to gain recognition for your work, I've got you.   Check out podcast episode 170, Top Insider Publicity Secrets with Senior Media Coach Lynya Floyd  Art World News Weekend Edition  It's been a busy week. We've covered censorship on Instagram. Additionally, we found out that art is now boring from author W. David Marx.   I'm still checking out your comments about the ethics of Matisse's painting of his daughter.   Lastly, I loved sharing Margaret Keane's story about her art, her fight to claim her own work, and why her method of painting eyes came about.   Until next time, stay inspired.

"Big Eyes" is Tim Burton's passion project about artists Walter and Margaret Keane but more primarily on Margaret for she is a pioneer in modern art of the time with her paintings that have the signature "big eyes" on the subjects. It's a fairly written film about standing up for yourself especially when it's stuff that's be distributed all around the world. I just personally felt that the acting in the Walter character is too much and the character of Margaret was a bit too weak. I can't say if the plot itself was a bit too laid back in a sense but the third act does make up for it. 2 1/2 of 4
