Today's episode was inspired by a conservative student concerned about claims that Islam is incompatible with the West. This polite and patriotic student raised an important question: If we stand for religious freedom, shouldn't that include Islam as well? Today we will directly address this question.SPONSOR: Angel StudiosAngel Studios is the home for stories that honor America, faith, and family, with a library that includes Homestead, The Last Rodeo, Green and Gold, and Mike Rowe's Something to Stand For. DESCRIPTION From women's sports and gender language to immigration policy and political messaging, Tara argues that Democrats have abandoned many of the causes they once championed. Today's show examines the growing debate over gender identity, free speech, public safety, and why even some Democratic leaders are admitting their party has a serious problem connecting with voters. PODCAST SUMMARY Today's show focused on the Democratic Party's evolving positions on gender, women's issues, and political messaging. Tara argued that policies surrounding gender identity and language have increasingly blurred traditional distinctions between men and women, creating what she described as a conflict between progressive ideology and longstanding feminist causes. The discussion highlighted debates over women's athletics, gender-specific language in legislation, and changing terminology used by some political figures and advocacy groups. A major portion of the show examined proposed legal and cultural shifts away from traditional terms such as "mother" and "father" in favor of more gender-neutral language. Tara contended that these changes represent a broader effort to reshape social norms and speech. The conversation also touched on immigration and public safety, including criticism of policies that Tara believes prioritize offenders over victims. She argued that political leaders have increasingly failed to address concerns about crime and public safety in ways that resonate with many women voters. The show further explored comments from Democratic officials discussing challenges with male voters. Tara pointed to recent acknowledgments from some Democrats that men increasingly feel alienated by the party's messaging and policy priorities. Throughout the broadcast, Tara framed these issues as evidence of a broader political realignment, arguing that both men and women are reacting negatively to what she sees as ideological overreach from progressive activists and Democratic leadership. KEY TAKEAWAYS Debates over women's sports remain a major political flashpoint. Gender-neutral language policies continue to generate controversy. Questions surrounding free speech and compelled speech were discussed. Immigration and public safety concerns remain central voter issues. Democratic leaders have publicly acknowledged struggles connecting with male voters. The discussion examined broader cultural and political shifts surrounding gender and identity. QUOTE OF THE DAY "When politics starts redefining basic realities, voters eventually push back." SEGMENT HIGHLIGHTS Women's Sports Under Debate Tara examined ongoing controversies surrounding transgender participation in women's athletics. The Language Battle Discussion centered on gender-neutral terminology and changing legal language related to parents and families. Public Safety Concerns The show explored how crime, immigration, and victim advocacy intersect with political messaging. Democrats and Male Voters Recent comments from Democratic officials about losing support among men became a major focus. The Bigger Cultural Fight Tara argued these issues are all part of a larger debate about identity, speech, and social change. SOCIAL MEDIA POST

[Part One] Lee Gilley — the Houston man accused of murdering his wife Christa Bauer Gilley and their unborn baby — has fled the country… to Milan, Italy! On today's episode, investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell break down how a capital murder defendant out on $1 million bond cut off his ankle monitor on a Friday night, flew to Canada, then to Milan on fake documents under the alias "LeJeune Jean Luc Olivier," and is now begging Italy for asylum to dodge a death penalty Texas wasn't even seeking. How did Harris County pre-trial services miss this for three full days? Why did prosecutors barely fight bond in the first place? And what does it mean that Lee hired Dick DeGuerin — the lawyer behind the defenses of Robert Durst and David Koresh? Plus: the "Unicorn Killer" precedent that took years to resolve, the lies hiding in Lee's own polygraph, and the war on women playing out in Houston courtrooms. David Waldman and KITM, now departing from San Luis Obispo with stops at Lompoc, Ventura, Azusa… and Kook…amonga! All aboard! For MAGA, "owning the libs" means being "hotter" than them too, by Trump's definition. Rosalyn MacGregor returns with an article by Michael Cohen, that Michael Cohen, warning us about Project 2025 and the hidden war on women to be fought over the next 250 years. Trump's 60 Minutes interview was edited, even though Trump sued 60 Minutes for editing interviews. That sounds hypocritical. Democrat's redistricting win lasted a few hours before being blocked by a court order, which unfortunately has not been halted by the Virginia Supreme Court. The Southern Poverty Law Center has been indicted for paying the groups it has helped to expose and prosecute for 55 years. The administration does not have a case, because a case would make a quick and easy smear campaign difficult and time consuming.

This Sunday 8th March is International Women's Day and to mark the occasion, The Women's Podcast hosted a live podcast recording at Chapters Bookstore in Dublin this week. On the night, Róisín Ingle was joined by DCU Professor Debbie Ging, human rights lawyer Caoilfhionn Gallagher and 5th year student Orla Hanratty to discuss how bias against women and girls has been built into the technologies shaping our world and crucially, what can be done about it.From deepfakes and nudification tools to AI girlfriends, the panel identified all the ways in which misogyny has been baked into evolving technology. They explored the ways to tackle the issue, the progress being made and shared practical ways to build safer, fairer online platforms. Singer Róisín O also joined us on the night to perform her new single Magic. Written as a tribute to her mother Mary Black, it's out this Friday 6th March. Hosted on Acast. As Ukraine entered its fifth year of full-scale invasion, millions of people are struggling every day to keep the lights on, cook and heat their homes amid extreme winter conditions. This fourth winter has been particularly harsh with 65 per cent of Ukraine's energy generation capacity methodically destroyed.Women and children are bearing the brunt of energy blackouts, which undermine their safety, protection, and economic security, according to gender agency, UN Women.Halyna Skipalska who runs the Ukrainian Foundation for Public Health spoke to UN News's Nathalie Minard about the growing impact of war on women and children's mental health.
We are a year into US President Trump's second term. He says he will tell European leaders "we have to have" Greenland at this week's forum in Davos, Switzerland and impose tariffs if they oppose him. Trump regularly hailed himself as the anti-war president on the campaign trail - and he's described himself since as the "president of peace" - but there are some who accuse him of waging a "war on women" since taking office. So, after a year back in the White House, how have the policies of President Trump's administration impacted women? Nuala McGovern is joined by Anne McElvoy, an executive editor at Politico and Jennifer Ewing, Spokesperson for Republicans Overseas UK. Brooklyn Peltz Beckham, the eldest son of the Beckhams, has said that he is not in touch with his family and does not want to reconcile with them. We don't all live our family lives on social media, but most of us do have moments when we question whether our relationships with them are good for us. How do you know when you've reached the point when the right thing to do could be to walk away? Eilidh Dorgan and psychotherapist Dr Sara Young discuss. More than 90% of medicines have never been tested in pregnancy, leaving millions of women worldwide facing an impossible choice, go without treatment, or take medication you're not certain is safe for your baby. The World Health Organisation is preparing to work with scientists, doctors and drug developers on what could be the biggest shift in decades, rethinking whether pregnant women should take part in drugs trials. Nuala talks to Martina Penazzato from the Science for Health Department at the World Health Organization (WHO) and Dr Teesta Dey, Maternal Technical Consultant at the World Health Organization and a Maternal Health Researcher at the University of Liverpool.Caroline Mitchell spent almost 10 years working for the police, including as a detective in the Criminal Investigation Department, before becoming a full-time writer. Her latest novel, The Ice Angels, has tinges of the Nordic-noir genre and is the first of a series featuring Elea, a Finnish detective whose daughter went missing 10-years earlier. She tells Nuala about the importance of writing for her and why the cityscape of Lincoln and Finland feeds into her work. This week we bring you an episode from Question Everything, another KCRW podcast. Host Brian Reed brings together the reporters who know the Jeffrey Epstein case best – along with one of their Trump-supporting producers – for drinks and a candid, no-holds-barred conversation. They compare notes, challenge each other's assumptions, and reveal what it really takes to separate fact from rumor in a story that has tested the limits of journalism. It's one of the most provocative and confronting discussions Brian's ever hosted about power, accountability and what's at stake when the media goes up against billionaires and their networks.Check out the Question Everything Substack, by the way, where we get into juicy behind the scenes details and other good stuff from our episodes. “Question Everything” is a production of KCRW and Placement Theory.Drinking and fact-checking don't always go hand in hand, so clarifying and correcting a few statements from the conversation here – which honestly in themselves give a sense of just how many crannies of global power the tendrils of the Epstein story reach into. We reached out to Anouska De Georgiou to see if she wanted to comment, but we didn't hear back. Leslie Wexner is not the founder of Victoria's Secret – he bought the company in 1982, and he said Jeffrey Epstein had stolen $46 million from him, not $60 million. Meanwhile investor Leon Black paid Epstein $170 million for supposed tax advice – not $160 million. Virginia Giuffre sued Prince Andrew as an individual, not the Crown itself. Tara Palmeri's reporting that Elon Musk dm'd Virgina Giuffre saying Trump would release the files is based on Virginia telling her this – Tara didn't see the DM. At one point, Eric says that in 2015, Roger Stone called Epstein's island a “democrat orgy island.” Really, Stone wrote a book excoriating the Clintons called The Clinton's War on Women, and there's a chapter in there called Orgy Island, which highlights Bill Clinton's friendship with Epstein. So Roger Stone didn't call Epstein's island a democrat orgy island. Just “orgy island.” And last, but not least: the pope who was in a picture with Jeffrey Epstein, which was displayed on Epstein's credenza, was John Paul II.

If you or someone you know needs extra support to survive Trump's economic warfare on the American people, to find help near you, enter your zip code in findhelp.org. For decades, Christian nationalists have insisted that controlling women's bodies is a moral crusade. What Irin Carmon shows in her blistering new book, Unbearable: Five Women and the Perils of Pregnancy in America, is that this crusade doesn't just target abortion, it poisons every aspect of pregnancy care in America and forces authoritarianism into our homes and doctor visits. Whether you want to be pregnant or don't, the system is designed to remind you who's in charge: not you. Carmon, an award-winning journalist and coauthor of Notorious RBG, was eight months pregnant when the Supreme Court, stacked with MAGA Mullahs handpicked by a Christian nationalist movement, tossed aside Roe v. Wade. The ruling didn't just ban abortion in swaths of the country; it unleashed slavery-era lawfare, rampant state censorship, and cruelty even for people desperate to carry pregnancies safely. Through the harrowing stories of five women across America, Carmon exposes a healthcare system warped by Christian nationalism. In Alabama, women risk their lives because doctors fear prosecution. In supposedly progressive New York, indifference and red tape mean patients still face shocking neglect. It turns out the war on women is not confined to "red states," it's everywhere, and it threatens our very democracy. What keeps Unbearable from sinking into despair are the moments of solidarity: the defiant doctors, advocates, and ordinary people resisting the grip of religious extremism. This is not just a book about pregnancy. It's a warning: America has allowed Christian nationalism to turn women's bodies into a battlefield. And until we call it what it is–a war on women–nothing will change. Want to hear Gaslit Nation ad-free? What do theme parties, abortion rights, and feminist rebellion have in common? Historian Jennifer Wright unearths women who, in their own subtle and not so subtle ways, defied the patriarchy, mocking original incel Anthony Comstock whose 19th-century repressive tactics are being used today in the far-right's war on women. In her dazzlingly researched books about Gilded Age legends like Mamie Fish, a character on the HBO series The Gilded Age, and innovative abortionist Madame Restell, Wright shows us that women have always found ways to wield power, even in times of deep inequality and political repression. Whether through eccentric parties or underground abortion networks, these women worked with what they had, where they were, and often did it with excitement. Mamie Fish, for instance, bent society to her will through legendary parties, supporting seamstresses on strike, and introducing actresses and artists into elite circles. Her antics, from dog banquets to a monkey posing as a prince, weren't just performance; they were power. And then there's Madame Restell: the go-to abortionist of 19th-century New York who never lost a patient and defied the patriarchy until the very end, possibly faking her own death to escape persecution. What are the rebel women of the Gilded Age trying to tell us? We need creativity in our resistance. Culture is fuel. Fashion, parties, and art can democratize power and offer joy in dark times. When we make activism fun, inclusive, and rooted in lived human experience, we inspire people to join the fight. For more on rebel women of the Gilded Age check out Jennifer Wright's books Madame Restell The Life, Death, and Resurrection of Old New York's Most Fabulous, Fearless, and Infamous Abortionist and also Glitz, Glam, and a Damn Good Time How Mamie Fish, Queen of the Gilded Age, Partied Her Way to Power. Now go throw a theme party fundraiser and get creative at your next protest. Today is a public holiday here in the UK, and so we're releasing a special episode on one of the great taboo subjects in the history of warfare: that of role of gender and sexual violence. Firstly, Adelie speaks with Sofi Oksanen, who just published the viral essay 'Same River, Twice, Putin's War on Women'. She discusses how historic attitudes to gender in Russia impacted post-Soviet history. The second interview is with Tatyana Tymoshenta, a therapist who works with survivors of rape in Ukraine. Listener discretion is especially advised for this episode.Contributors:Adélie Pojzman-Pontay (Reporter and Producer). @adeliepjz on X.With thanks to Sofi Oksanen, @SofiOksanen on X. Tressie McMillan Cottom is back on the podcast. Tressie, Trevor, and Christiana discuss Donald Trump's Tesla infomercial at the White House, the psychology of the American voter, and why so many of us unwittingly vote for candidates whose views are actually the opposite of ours. The three also explore our tendency to not appreciate what we have until it's gone, and how that ties into America's current war on women. Learn more about your ad choices. Stripping women of their rights has never been about one specific issue. It's always been about control, and how you exercise control over women. But this war on women won't just stop with us. Project 2025, which is being implemented line by line is about remaking society so it aligns better with one specific set of far right, nationalistic, religious values. The target is moving one, and these actions if not opposed, will end up harming everyone, because once you allow the government to strip one group of their freedoms, you inevitably open the door for them to strip everyone of their freedoms. That's simply how it works. The mainstream media is a joke. Our country's under attack and they aren't even talking about it. Now, more than ever, we need to support those of us doing independent work bringing the public the truth when it's increasingly difficult to find.
