In this week's episode, we chat with Liz Minnella about how the Democrats need to invest in and build a digital strategy, as well as focus on the class war instead of the culture war.Liz is a mom of two toddlers, an advocate, fundraiser and Instagram demfluencer. She gained an audience on Instagram following the Fourth of July shooting in Highland Park by posting short actionable steps for fellow activists to take to advance gun violence prevention legislation and she helped lead the grassroots push to pass the IL Assault Weapons Ban. During the 2024 election cycle, she hit her stride organizing and activating everyday people to use their power and influence to make change. She founded Chicago Women for Harris and co-organized and MCd White Women: Answer the call, which broke Zoom with over 200,000 viewers. She served as the Finance Co-chair of Women for Harris and raised tens of millions of dollars for the Harris campaign. She held weekly Women Wednesdays for Harris Zoom calls and organized door knocking trips across the battleground states. Her work was featured in a front page article in the New York Times and on CNN in the days following the election. She is now continuing to champion progressive candidates and organizations at the local and national level and hopes to continue to expand the left's online ecosystem to combat extremism and the spread of radicalizing misinformation.Connect with Liz: InstagramConnect with USS: * Substack* InstagramThis episode was edited by Kevin Tanner. Hello! We're joined today by Matt Karp, a columnist for Harper's, a professor of History at Princeton and one of the most intelligent and incisive writers on the left. We talk about AOC's big night at the DNC, the somewhat moribund state of the left after Bernie's big win in the 2020 Nevada primary, and whether the future for the left is bright or gloomy. This was a lively one and lotta good thinking from Matt here so please take a listen! One note: apologies I think there was some street work being done towards the back end but we tried to clean it up as best as we could. Shouldn't be too much of a problem. thanks! The legend of McLusky has grown greatly since the the group's initial breakup in 2005. The release of the three-disc Mcluskyism compilation is no doubt reasonable for much of that prolonged success. So, too, are the members' post-McLusky projects, including Future of the Left. Formed by ex-members Andrew Falkous and Jack Egglestone shortly after breakup, the group carried on its tradition of sardonic and melodic noise rock. Falkous and Egglestone reformed McLusky in 2014. The group's second stint is officially longer than its first as of 2024. The group is currently in the midst of an American tour, postponed by two years, due to Falkous' health issues. Here he discusses all of that and more. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

THE RADICAL LEFT is the topic of this episode with the great Tony of the excellent youtube channel 1Dime. We have a wide ranging conversation about the history and future of the radical left--is there even a left, were experiments like the Soviet Union and communist China really communist, and what's next, how do we create a modern revolutionary movement that goes further than a movement that is largely stuck in the past, into the FUTURE.

Ro Khanna is a progressive congressman representing California's 17th District, the wealthiest Congressional district in the U.S. He's the Silicon Valley congressman, and his constituents are the coastal elites of the elites. But if you didn't know any of that, you might think Ro Khanna is a congressman from a place like Indiana. He wants to revitalize American industry, bring manufacturing back home, and really sound the alarm on who the digital revolution has left behind. In fact, when you hear Ro Khanna make the case for the dignity of working people, the negative effects of globalization, and campaign with slogans like “make more stuff here,” and “buy American,” he kind of sounds like… Donald Trump. That tells you everything you need to know about our current political moment and how the old rules about what is left and what is right, and which party represents the working class is totally up for grabs. And Khanna thinks that Democrats should be dominating on these issues. On big tech, Khanna's policies are not exactly the ones you'd imagine coming from the congressman whose neighbors are the creators of the next Googles and Facebooks. Not only does he think big tech needs to be broken up, but he also was one of the only Democrats to diverge from his party's censorious impulses, when he reached out directly to Twitter in 2020 to criticize its decision to suppress the Hunter Biden laptop story, as we reported in the Twitter Files story. In an era where the Democratic Party and big tech often seem to be marching in lockstep, Khanna says, hold on. Maybe we should be skeptical of this kind of corporate power. And isn't that the core of what the Democratic Party is supposed to be about? And if not, when did that change and why? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

We're playing out Part 2 of our Jimmy Watkins interview this week. Previously, Jimmy was telling us about how he set up the Running Punks - an online community which supports mental health by combining music and running. This week he talks more about his previous incarnations - including his time playing in alt-rock band Future of the Left, and then the Vega Bodegas. He also explains why he embarked on a music career, as at the time he was a Welsh record holder for the 800 metres and starting to prepare for a place at the Olympics! Our music choices also have a Welsh theme this week - we play a track from Jimmy's band, the Vega Bodegas, and Kieran chooses a new release from Welsh songwriter, Tom Jenkins. We also talk about a growing trend for people to move away from streaming services in favour of physical discs, and we look at some of the gigs taking place in towns across the West in the coming week.

The Vega Bodegas - "All My Fish Are Dead," a 2021 self-released single. Cardiff post-punk band The Vega Bodegas is led by Jimmy Watkins, formerly of Future Of The Left and Strange News From Another Star. They've been laying low since the 2018 release of their debut full-length, A Complete History of Witchcraft, but have re-emerged to share the single "All My Fish Are Dead." Watkins described toBirthday Cake Breakfast how today's featured track was inspired by two books: At the time I was reading a book called Strangers by Rebecca Tamás, and it was changing the way I thought about the modern world. It was terrifying, but at the same time it had answers about how we could change things like capitalism and the destruction of the planet. It introduced me to panpsychism and I was fascinated by this idea that our surroundings influence how we think. I was also reading a book called American Cosmic by D.W Pasulka. In that book she meets people who believe their great ideas have come from aliens. I used that for the lines about “operating on a whole other level… outside on my mile high decking” and about our body parts being full of galaxies. Together, those two books painted a picture of humans destroying the planet whilst also receiving messages of hope and innovation from outer space. That was a pretty surreal combo for me, so I went for it lyrically and described a modern world full of chaos and weird beauty. I wanted to paint a dreamlike landscape which was driven by capitalism and greed, but had a soft middle where it talks about how magical the human body can be. I have no idea if I succeeded, but for the first time in my life I can listen to a song we've recorded and think to myself that I'd put everything I could into the lyrics. Interview time part 2! In case you missed it, here is part one, where we discuss Andy's career in mclusky and Future of the Left. In this episode we asked Andy to pick three albums he thinks are unsung classics: Jarcrew - Breakdance Euphoria Kids (which you will find version of on Spotify simply titled Jarcrew) The God Machine - Scenes from the Second Storey New Kingdom - Paradise Don't Come Cheap Three very different albums that Andy picked for different reasons, as we go into at length on the episode. From friends and future band mates, to tortured alt-metal and all the way through to psychedelic hip hop, there's not a huge amount that really link these albums at first blush, but that's part of the intrigue! All in, we spent about 3 and a half hours recording with Andy for these two episodes. It was a long but lovely evening, and we're very appreciative of him and his time. Normality returns next week as we invite friend of the pod Ferruccio Quercetti on to talk about Hissing Prigs in Static Couture by Brainiac.
Interview time! It’s been a wee while since we did one of those so we got one of our favourite musicians, and general lovely bloke, Andy Falkous from mclusky, Future of the Left and Christian Fitness on to have a good ol’ yammer. In part one we chat about IKEA furniture, tiny cans of Diet Coke, why you shouldn’t put beer in the fridge and many other things. Including his musical career thus far. Which we talk about at length and it’s bloody lovely. We touch on just about every part of his career here. We go in depth about mclusky and what it was like. Then we touch on FOTL and some of the tunes that he feels have gone under appreciated in his canon of cracking tunes. All told, Andy is great banter and we cover way, way more than what I’ve just written here. If you’re a fan of any of his music, this is essential listening. If you’re a general Unsung fan, you’ll also love this. Go forth, listeners, and have a bloody good time.

Paul Tremblay is the author of several novels, such as “A Head Full Of Ghosts”, “Disappearance At Devil’s Rock”, “The Cabin At The End Of The World” and “Survivor Song”. One short story collection, “Growing Things” belongs on this list, as well. All thought provoking, some ambiguous, all lovely (and sometimes heartbreaking), some straight forward and tidily resolved. No mater what, I always walk away from a novel or story written by Paul Tremblay satisfied and yearning for more. Questions, though. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have any questions after reading the stories of Paul Tremblay. So, here we are! This episode features an interview with Paul Tremblay, plus three songs by some of the bands that he loves. A Husker Du cover performed by Big Drill Car, plus two songs by those Welsh masters of melodic mayhem, Future Of The Left. Samples of the questions I asked one of my favorite authors of recent years? Where do you find the best fried clams in the Boston area? (Hint, they’re not IN Boston proper, trick question.) Who would you choose, from a roster of Boston bands? The Pixies or The Cars? Last one, last sample question - do you, Mr. Tremblay, believe in ghosts? Listen for the answers to those questions, plus the sounds of some of Paul Tremblay’s favorite bands.

Today he can be found running around Llanelli and hosting the Megabus to the Ritz podcast. This week's episode was recorded during the lockdown and as you will hear, there are a number of disruptions from doorbells, animals and children which has all been left in as a reminder that life is a little odd at the moment and as a record of the time. So, over to David and Jimmy for episode 13 of Front Runner Radio, Enjoy

What enabled the Sanders campaign to attract the support that it did? I consider this question using a variety of analytic frameworks. I also consider the differences/ dividing lines between Sanders & Warren & end looking at the future challenges & opportunities for left-wing ideologies.
Seja talks to her guest Andrew Falkous AKA Falco (Future of the Left, Mclusky) about how as a kid he wasn’t a music fan as a rebellion against his music teacher parents, how Queen changed everything and how he hates the term origin story. They chat about bullying the bullies, stage banter and their shared love for Roland Juno 60s. Falco tells Seja about his honesty regarding making a living from music, how he protects his voice, his trusting relationships with his bandmates and the role their egos play in the songwriting process. Falco's strange show experience was illustrated by Murdoch Stafford (@murdochstafford). You can find all illustrations on instagram @hearsejpodcast or on the HearSej Facebook page.
In the shadow of Bernie Sanders’ underperforming on Super Tuesday, Shadi and Damir welcome author Ben Judah to the podcast to talk about the enduring promise of left-populism in an Age of Trump. Relevant Reading: “Left Populism and the Rediscovery of Agonistic Politics,” by Shadi Hamid “Traditional ‘foreign policy’ no longer exists. Democrats are the last to know,” by David Adler and Ben Judah “Hawks say Sanders will be weak on Russia. Anyone guessed what song lyric the podcast lifted its name from? Yes, you got it right, gold star, it’s ‘Manchasm’ by Future of the Left. To have Andrew “Falco” Falkous on the podcast was an absolute honour and a pleasure. Fresh off mclusky*’s tour in Australasia we talked around what makes a live show, cheese & Elvis Costello. If you’re lucky to have a ticket to one of mclusky* sold out shows next month, enjoy! If not keep a look out for more dates.
Dude pops in as a guest and helps discuss Graham's guest-laden soul album, 'Bear, Hugs & Harmony'. Almost certainly containing members of Super Furry Animals, The Manics, The Darkness, Menswear, Los Campesinos!, Future Of The Left and De La Soul plus Shakin' Stevens, Charlotte Church, Connie Fisher and Richard Osman. Or not. A customer comes in to buy a Who album that he doesn't like and we do a sort of Bowie Top Trumps quiz in honour of the anniversary of his death.

The future of the left in Israel, session at Ideas For Freedom 2019. The 2019 elections returned disastrous results for the left. Against a backdrop of rising nationalism, with Israel's right-wing government apparently intent on permanent annexation of Palestinian Territories, three speakers will discuss the prospects for building a Jewish-Arab left that can fight back against occupation, racism, and capitalism. With Eric Lee (Labour Start, p.c.), Maya Ilany (Yachad, p.c.), Tom Harris (Workers' Liberty). On this episode activist and academic Christo Aivalis argues that, despite a 3rd-place finish, Niki Ashton’s campaign for the NDP leadership succeeded in pulling the ideological conversation within the Party firmly to the left. We also dig into some of the leadership race results and discuss the potential of a Jagmeet Singh-led federal NDP.

I've been looking forward to sharing this interview since the day it was recorded. As it happens, my original plan for this was for it to be episode number two, but once I sat down to edit it I realised that of my side of the interview was garbled – it'd somehow been completely corrupt during the recording process. Now, normally I record my end twice so that I've got a backup in case something like this happens, and the one time I didn't do it also happened to be the one time a backup would've been really useful, so when I found out it was corrupt I thought it was game over.A good friend of mine (the superb Lewis Glass) suggested that I should re-record my side because Andy's side was fine. A great idea, I'm sure you'll agree, but a lengthy solution to a problem brought on my own stupidity. What followed was literally two months of procrastination. I knew recording would be a big job and I honestly couldn't face it. However I also knew that I would need to do it at some point, so that's what I did and here it is: the final complete interview with Andrew Falkous from Future of the Left.I first became aware of Falco's work about a decade ago, when the bass player of my old band used to spend at least half of our band practices talking about how good mclusky* were. For reasons that completely escape me, I didn't look into his recommendation at the time, so they sorta just passed me by.Later, when I was editor at Daily Dischord, a copy of Future of the Left's second album ‘Travels With Myself and Another' found its way through my letterbox. Intrigued by the press release's reference to mclusky* I popped the disk in my CD player and needless to say, after two listens I was hooked.Falco has always had a reputation for being somewhat opinionated, which is one of the reasons why I felt like I had to interview him. From his wonderful, often antagonistic lyrics to the way he takes pop music and fuses it with off-kilter alt-rock, he's always struck me as truly punk rock – fearless, witty, intelligent, and incisive. You get a great sense of that in this interview, and in my opinion it's one of the best interviews I've ever conducted. What follows is a funny and insightful chat, as Andy waxes lyrical on his creative process, how to be in a band, what it's like transitioning between music and writing fiction, how he composes lyrics, the rich creative talents that he has, his productivity and oh so much more. This one's a keeper. Enjoy it. Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Visit acast.com/privacy for more information.

In this episode, Bhaskar Sunkara, founding editor and publisher of Jacobin Magazine, talks about the short history of his publication and how it has thus far tried to differentiate itself from other magazines of liberal-left opinion. He also discusses the current election and explores the possible reasons for, and implications of, the rise of Sanders on the left and Trump on the right. Finally, Sunkara considers the near future of the American left. This interview was recorded on October 27, 2016.
What next for Labour, and where does it go from here? Following the party's leadership election, Birkbeck Politics was joined by Lord Stewart Wood, a Labour peer since 2011 who served in Ed Miliband’s Shadow Cabinet and held an advisory role in the party’s 2015 General Election campaign. He was formerly an adviser to Gordon Brown in the Treasury and later in 10 Downing Street. Image credit: Policy Exchange (Flickr)
