The cross is central to understanding both Christ and Christian discipleship. Yet we recoil from the path that involves suffering, hardship, or personal denial. Nonetheless, in today’s passage we learn the essential and central role of the cross in the Christian life. Join us as we learn!

And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.

Do you know what it means to "follow" Jesus? Due to social media, in today's society, the word "follow" means to simply press a button and "become a fan" of someone. But to "Follow Jesus" means something totally different. "Following Jesus" means to read and study the Word of God, and apply what we learn from the Word of God to our every day lives; to love people in the same manner that Jesus loves people. So, do you "follow" Jesus, or do you "Follow Jesus"? If you'd like to join us, please visit us at 4218 Boston Ave. Lubbock Texas. After declaring that Jesus is the messiah Peter discourages Jesus from fulfilling the suffering prophesied. Jesus rebukes Peter saying that he is setting his mind on things of man rather than of God. Afterward Jesus states that "whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it."
"Caveat Emptor"! This is a Latin term that economists and business experts are familiar with. It means, "Let the buyer beware." If you have ever been suckered into a bad deal or made a bad purchase, you don't need to go to business school... you already understand this principle very well. In Matthew 16, Jesus has a very serious and genuine discussion with His disciples on what it means to be a disciple. It is almost carries a "Buyer Beware" tone to it. To follow Jesus is to share in His sufferings and to share in self-denial, sacrifice and cross-bearing. To follow Jesus is to live in the constant tension of colliding worlds. In this message, Pastor Derek Holmes looks at how, even though the Christ-life offers great promise, it also bears great difficulty. But, there is still no life greater than the disciple life.

"That Pesky Cross"
When Peter learns what it will mean for Jesus to live out his vocation as "the Messiah, Son of the living God" he reacts with horror, proclaiming, "God forbid ...". And yet, God does not forbid and Jesus indeed suffers, dies and is raised. When does God forbid and when does God allow? Do we make choices about how we react to situations or does God cause us to react without free agency? These important questions come to light in today's text, and are especially important when, as was the case with Peter, we are confronted by something too terrible to face.

Being obedient is being Mindful of the things of God vs The things of man, being a recipient of life vs losing your soul, and being eternally rich vs poor.
Why did Jesus come and how did his mission fulfill the promises of God?
Finishing up Matthew chapter 16, we are challenged by Jesus to take up our cross and follow Him. This is the true basis of Christian discipleship.
God demands everything from us. This is best illustrated in this passage where he tells His disciples to deny themselves and take up their cross. This is a sobering passage about how to be fully engaged in living our lives for our Lord.

BELONGING In the early days of the Soviet Union, Marxism took the leaders down a path that said the family was nothing—the State was everything. So they experimented. They took children away from their parents and raised them in a kind of commune. The experiment died away because the children grew up with more problems and fewer securities. Why? They didn’t belong. Oddly, what has been demonstrated as a disaster in this experiment, many of us unwittingly embrace now. No, not in sending our kids away from our family. Rather, we ourselves don’t make a commitment to belong in a church family. We choose to be spiritual orphans. The results are in. No commitment, no health. Belong!
