Sing to the Lord a New Song Marshall Segal Download Psalm 98,Oh sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things! His right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him.2 The Lord has made known his salvation; he has revealed his righteousness in the sight of the nations.3 He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness to the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.4 Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises!5 Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre, with the lyre and the sound of melody!6 With trumpets and the sound of the horn make a joyful noise before the King, the Lord!7 Let the sea roar, and all that fills it; the world and those who dwell in it!8 Let the rivers clap their hands; let the hills sing for joy together9 before the Lord, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with equity.Last fall, my oldest son and I planted a couple hundred tulip bulbs in two front flower beds. My wife's from California, so we love spring and summer in our home. I mean everybody really loves spring and summer here, but some of us hate winter more than others. The Segals express that hatred with gardening. We spring really hard. We plant a couple hundred tulips — red and yellow and white, some white with red stripes, some purple double tulips. We also have about a dozen peonies, each with a dozen blooms. If you've ever seen peonies up close, they don't look real. They look like some fine cloth has been woven together and overstuffed. They're glorious. I love them, and I love them for the same reason Jesus loved them:“Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?” (Matthew 6:28–30)Consider the lilies. Are you struggling with little faith? Stop and listen to the lilies. They're singing. And they call us to sing with them about God and his glory. That's what we see again at the end of this psalm. Verse 7:Let the sea roar, and all that fills it;the world and those who dwell in it!Let the rivers clap their hands;let the hills sing for joy together. . . .Creation is performing for us. Can you hear it? The seas, wide and deep, are roaring out the bass line. The hills are dancing and breaking into high harmonies. And the rivers are clapping along to all that beautiful music. My wife and I actually got to hear an orchestra on Friday in Downtown Minneapolis, and that's what's happening all around us all the time. And it's happening with even greater precision and purpose than all those violins and cellos and trombones, because God is conducting everything we see and hear and taste and touch. Psalm 98 reminds us that creation is singing for anyone who will listen, and so before we really even get into the psalm, let's go ahead and get to some application for us as a church: Don't squander creation's performance this summer. Don't Squander CreationWhen God's people needed strength to keep believing, keep obeying, keep singing, they deliberately went and looked at rivers and seas and hills. Do you do that? Remember God himself is telling you here that he made all this to help you worship. He knew it was going to be hard to keep going. He knew we'd be prone to wander and doubt. And so he made stuff — all kinds of crazy stuff. He made galaxies and galaxies of crazy stuff, more than we could ever find, much less analyze, so that we'd have all kinds of reminders and reasons to worship him. My kids were studying sperm whales this week. Did you know that sperm whales have the largest brain of any creature on earth? Why would God do that? Why would God make these mammoth whales, with these massive brains, who dive 3,000 miles down to eat giant squid? So that you would see a sperm whale and his big ol' brain, and marvel at the creativity and power and goodness of God — and then do psalm 98:“Oh sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things!”I don't care what it looks like for you this summer. The Segals aren't big camping people, but we love flowers and long walks and new parks and the beach. Don't squander creation this summer. Get out there and look and listen and learn and worship. Let something God has made remind you to sing. And then go find something else tomorrow. And then something else the next day.1. Sing to the LordAlright, the main point of the psalm is that very first line:Oh sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things! His right hand and his holy armhave worked salvation for him.We don't know who wrote this psalm, but it's one of a series of psalms here highlighting God as king. Verse 6 says,“With trumpets and the sound of the horn make a joyful noise before the King, the LORD!”This psalm is calling people to sing because their King has saved them again.“His right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him.”We don't know what deliverance they're singing about. It could be the exodus out of Egypt, or the deliverance from the wilderness, or the conquest of Canaan, or victory over the Philistines, or the return from exile. We don't know. God delivered Israel a lot. Whatever deliverance it was, the psalmist saw what God had done and he said, we should sing. And people who have been saved by God should sing, right? Why do we sing? Why would the infinitely creative, infinitely powerful God alter our brains and vocal cords to give us the capacity to make melody and harmony? I think it's because some things in life are just too good to be said. For example, I can say, “I love Jesus.” I can say, “I really love Jesus,” and I do. I can say, “Jesus is my greatest Treasure,” and he is. I can say, “Jesus is the greatest, most trustworthy, most satisfying, most glorious Treasure in the world.” Can I get an amen? Or I could sing, “Hallelujah! All I have is Christ!” I don't even have to sing it well — and it still says more than words can say.God gave us singing because there's a joy greater than words. He didn't make all of this and us so that he could be understood and explained. God gave us singing because we were made to worship — to glorify him by enjoying him forever. It's not enough to know, study, or describe this God. To really know him is to enjoy him, to treasure him, to worship him. So, point one, sing to the Lord for who he is and what he's done for you.To Our MenAnd before I go to point two, I want to take Psalm 98 as an opportunity to rally our men in particular. Now, a lot of our men sing and sing loud. I love you and thank God for you, don't stop, abound all the more — and I'm not talking to you right now. No, I want to plead with the men we don't hear on Sunday morning. This text, and lots of other ones, teach us that a man isn't fully a man if he's not singing. Men, you weren't just made to work and protect and fix stuff. You were made to sing! You were made to sing, andwe need you to sing. I'm going to get to this in a minute, but Psalm 98 teaches us that one way we guard and provide for and build the church is to sing. You have no idea what impact it has when the people around you, especially all the young sons and daughters here, see grown men sing with all their hearts. I really think there are few things more captivating in our society than a man so filled with faith that he freely and enthusiastically sings — even when he can't sing. Especially when he can't sing. I could name some names here. Again, it's not ability. I personally think that's why the psalm says in verse 4:“Make a joyful noise to the LORD.”Sing! Shout! Make some kind of noise! If you can't carry a tune, if God gave you a bucket — then bang on the bucket. It doesn't have to sound good. It just needs to sound like joy. Grab a trumpet, grab a tambourine, grab a lyre (whatever that is). Clap your hands. If you have joy in the Lord, make it a loud joy. Don't cave to social pressure, put it under a basket, and make bad excuses for sitting out of the singing. We need to hear your joy in God. We need a song, and not just any song. We need a new song. 2. Sing a New SongWhen God calls the people to sing, he specifically says, “Oh sing to the LORD a new song!” Don't just keep singing the same songs. No, new deliverance calls for a new song. If God hears our prayers and fights for us, we're going to sing about it. This is one of the great lessons of the psalms, right? I mean we're in the process of walking through 150 songs. This is already our eighth summer in the psalms. We get the point by now, don't we?We were made for worship. Life is hard and confusing and painful, because of sin. But God still reigns (and creation testifies to that). God watches over his people, satisfies them with himself, and delivers them from every kind of enemy and trial. So trust in God, and worship him.Do we really need 150 versions of that? Oh my goodness, yes! Are you kidding me? We need 150 million songs to try and capture the glory of this God. This is why the 150 psalms keep telling us to sing even more new songs.Psalm 33:3,“Sing to him a new song; play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts.” Psalm 96:1,“Oh sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth!”Psalm 149:1,“Praise the Lord! Sing to the LORD a new song, his praise in the assembly of the godly!”When God's people experienced his salvation in some new way, they wanted a new song. We need a new way to express all the thanks and faith and joy we feel toward God right now. . . . Notice that there's nothing actually new in the psalm. Again, we can't even tell what event they were singing about. That's not the point of “new” here. New wasn't unveiling new information. No, it's rehearsing the same glorious realities about God with different words and melodies, because he deserves all the lyrics and melodies. We sing a new song because there will always be more to celebrate. I love how Psalm 40:5 unleashes this kind of worship:You have multiplied, O Lord my God,your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us;none can compare with you!I will proclaim and tell of them, yet they are more than can be told.Do you hear that? God, I'll tell them everything you've done for me — all your wondrous deeds — yet they are more than can be told. If I tried to say it all, I'm going to run out of ink, breath, time, or all of the above. Our lead pastor is leading us well here. Pastor Jonathan wrote that first song we sang this morning — “I Am Free.” He's not rushing to tell you that, and I admire him for that. But that won't keep me from telling you.No more death, no debt is due,The blood of Christ has made me new!The curse undone, my heart is freeThe risen Son has rescued me!Amen! And may it be the first of dozens of new songs we sing together as a church. Now, we don't have to write every new song (a “new song” might just be new to us), but it's especially sweet when one of us pours their heart into lyrics and melody to say Jesus is real, his mercy met me at the cross, and he set me free. And if God keeps delivering us — and he will keep delivering us until he brings us safely home — then we'll need another song soon. So go ahead and sing a new song, and then another one, and then another one. You're not going to exhaust him and his salvation. And singing a new song will help you see more of him.3. Recruit the ChoirIn verses 1–3, Israel is singing a new song about the salvation God has worked for them. In verses 4–6, though, the psalm turns and invites the whole earth into the choir. Let's start in verse 3:The Lord has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulnessto the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seenthe salvation of our God.Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth;break forth into joyous song and sing praises! . . .Make a joyful noise,” verse 6, “before the King, the LORD!”All the ends of the earth have seen this salvation — they've seen God love and deliver this people from their enemies — so come and sing with us! You can be saved too, if you'll humble yourself and bow to the true King.Notice that we're not inviting the world with yelling. This feels relevant given what we've been enduring for months now. Lots of yelling. We're not yelling back, no we're inviting all the earth, even that little stretch of green across the street, with singing. And we're singing because we're not just inviting them to acknowledge the truth and bow to the King; we really are inviting them into our joy. World, you have seen and heard what he's done for us — “All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.” Jesus came and died and rose so that you don't have to die for your sins. You don't have to face the wrath of God. You don't have to settle for weak and fleeting pleasure here on earth. You can be saved! Get in on this! Come taste something so good you can't help but sing! He's looking out on all the earth — I'm thinking of the missionaries we prayed for a few weeks ago during global missions Sunday, they're saying to all the nations, billions of lost people, come join this choir. Far As The Curse Is FoundBut the choir doesn't stop there. Verses 4–6 call all the tongues, tribes, peoples, and nations into the choir room — all the earth, praise him. Come and have what we're having. Come and be saved by grace through faith. Look at verses 7–8 again, though. The psalm goes even farther…Let the sea roar, and all that fills it;the world and those who dwell in it!Let the rivers clap their hands;let the hills sing for joy together. . . .He wants the rivers and hills and oceans and whales to get in on this, too. Now, we already saw that they're singing — and they really are. But by verse 7, even creation is singing a new song. And we know that because of verses 9–10. I'll begin in verse 8 again:Let the rivers clap their hands;let the hills sing for joy togetherbefore the LORD, for he comesto judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with equity. Why are the rivers clapping? Because God has come to judge the world. He's finally come to put an end to sin, to pour out justice on all who refuse to receive his mercy, and to make all things right again. This psalm tells us that creation isn't singing at full strength yet. And we know this at the Segal house. I told you about our peonies. Well, a couple days after our first one bloomed — big beautiful white blooms, with yellow inside and a bright red center — the rain came through and ripped all the pedals off. Every single one. It's a big green shrub of ugly little stumps. We had just a few glorious days, and now we're left waiting for another 362 days. What kind of deal is that? I told you we planted 200 tulips last fall. I didn't tell you that we only got to see a dozen or two, because deer came through and ate them all before they bloomed. What's the point? Creation's not singing at full strength yet. Consider the lilies — they're dying. They're getting eaten. They're all going to be buried in snow in six months. Creation is cursed because of sin.Strawberries get moldly before they make it to the fridge. Parasites wipe out crops and other animals. Wildfires break out and destroy communities. It gets brutally cold in Minnesota for half the year. And don't get me started on construction. That's our creation, not his, but man, it's good illustration of the curse under sin. Your normal street's totally dug up, you don't know which way to go, it takes twice as long to get there, and you just want to get home. The creation is beautiful and it is singing, but it's also cursed — for now. And when Christ comes to judge the world, there won't be any more construction (or disease or mold or cold). This is why I've come to love “Joy to the World” even more. Isaac Watts wrote the hymn in 1719, and it's based on this psalm. And while it's a great Christmas hymn, it's not only a Christmas hymn. This isn't only a Christmas hymn, listen:Joy to the world, the Lord is come; [That's Christmas. He has come.]Let earth receive her King!Let every heart prepare him room And heaven and nature sing!Joy to the earth, the Savior reigns!Let men their songs employWhile fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains,Repeat the sounding joy!No more let sins and sorrows grow,Nor thorns infest the ground; He comes to make his blessings flowFar as the curse is found! That's not Christmas! It's not. When Jesus came the first time, and lived and died and rose and ascended, his blessings didn't flow far as the curse is found. If you don't believe me, just step outside and stand with our security guys for a few minutes. You don't even have to step outside, though. There's enough heartache inside this room to tell us this hasn't happened yet. But it will, he's coming again, and that's what Isaac Watts is singing about. Romans 8 says: “The creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now.” (Romans 8:20–22)So, creation is singing, but it's also waiting, groaning, suffering. It's in bondage. This psalm looks back and celebrates past deliverance — his right hand and holy arm rescued us — and it's preparing for a final deliverance, when even the seas and hills and rivers are finally set free. Jesus is going to come again and save us, Cities Church! And that means we can sing even while we're waiting for justice and deliverance here. Can we sing songs like this in hard days? Of course we can. He has already delivered us. What more does he have to do? And he will deliver us again, and soon. And so we can sing right now, wherever we are in between. In fact, we must sing, because singing is one of the ways God delivers his people. That's why songs like Psalm 98 and “How Great Thou Art” and the song we're about to sing exist. Who knows how much God is saving us from while we sing these songs together each Sunday? His Right Hand and Holy ArmSo, sing a new song to the Lord. And how could we not when we have seen an even greater salvation? This brings us to the Table. We say these same words, verse 1:“His right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him.”But when we sing about “his holy arm,” we picture real arms stretched out wide, bloody and straining for air, on the cross. When we sing about “his right hand,” we see the nails in his hands, and the thorns in his head, and the spear in his side. Oh sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things! [Hasn't he?]His right hand and his holy armhave worked salvation for him.The LORD has made known his salvation;he has revealed his righteousness in the sight of the nations.Yes, he has. That's what we remember with this meal. The King has come and worked salvation for us — he lived without sin, convicted without a crime, put to death without justice, and three days later, he rose from the dead. And he will come again to bring full and final salvation.

I have no way to prove this, but I suspect that more people know the song "How Great Thou Art" than know the Psalm upon which it is based - Psalm 8. I venture to guess that more people have heard this song in the last 75 years than have read the book of Psalms. And I think that's just fine! Because, the song - “How Great Thou Art” -, remains faithful to the text.   Times have changed. Understandings of the world have changed. Theological conclusions have changed. Modes and manners of worship have changed. Attitudes toward ecology and creation have changed. Science has changed. Technology has changed. Religion has changed. But still, there is this eternal hymn written to the glory of God, glory that is recognized in the world around us. Your Faith Journey - Finding God Through Words, Song and Praise

Earth Sunday/Third Sunday of Easter April 19, 2026 Faith Okemos I Peter 1:17-23, Psalm 104, Romans 8:18-27, Luke 24:13-35   Because the World Is About to Turn   My soul cries out with a joyful shout that the God of my heart is great, and my spirit sings of the wondrous things that you bring to the ones who wait.  You fixed your sight on your servant's plight, and my weakness you did not spurn, so from east to west shall my name be blest. Could the world be about to turn?    My heart shall sing of the day you bring. Let the fires of your justice burn.  Wipe away all tears, for the dawn draws near, and the world is about to turn.   From the halls of power to the fortress tower, not a stone will be left on stone.  Let the king beware for your justice tears every tyrant from his throne.  The hungry poor shall weep no more, for the food they can never earn; there are tables spread, every mouth be fed, for the world is about to turn…                                                  ELW 723   When Victor Orban, the authoritarian prime minister of Hungary, was soundly defeated a week ago today, it did seem another sign that our world was about to turn.  Increasingly throughout the world more and more nations have been led by far-right dictators.  They and their cronies have amassed for themselves enormous wealth at the expense of the health and well-being of those citizens they were elected to lead and of the Earth itself.  But on this Earth Sunday 2026, we see signs of hope, signs of resurrection that God is birthing in the hearts and actions of millions of people throughout the world, including millions in our own country…Signs of hope and resurrection through the forthright words of religious leaders like our own Bishop Julie and like Pope Leo.   Could it be that the world is about to turn?  I think of all the money given in recent weeks (including from us) to fully fund the purchase and installation of a solar array, a project co-sponsored by Michigan Interfaith Power and Light for a Habitat for Humanity home near Sparrow Hospital, now a home for adults with autism and for their support staff, a home that will receive much of its power directly from the sun.      This "great turning" looks like the 900 people (including several of us from Faith) who journeyed from Pilgrim Congregational Church on Pennsylvania Ave. to the Capitol four Sundays ago, pledging anew to see Jesus in feeding the hungry, healing the sick, and welcoming the stranger.     In a book titled Active Hope, the authors share this poem about grace and trust and courage in a world about to turn:  When you act on behalf of something greater than yourself, you begin to feel it acting through you with a power greater than you own. This is grace. Today, as we take risks for the something greater than our separate, individual lives, we are feeling graced by other beings and by Earth itself. Those with whom and on whose behalf we act give us strength and eloquence and staying power we didn't know we had. We just need to practice knowing that and remembering that we are sustained by each other in the web of life.  Our true power comes as a gift, like grace, because in truth it is sustained by others. If we practice drawing on the wisdom and beauty and strengths of our fellow humans and our fellow species, we can go into any situation and trust that the courage and intelligence required will be supplied.      In our beautiful gospel for today (a favorite of Pastor Megan's), Jesus our risen Lord and a "fellow human," walks with Cleopas and another disciple (likely his wife, one of the Mary's who followed Jesus on his earthly journey), albeit incognito, unrecognized… until in their home Jesus takes and blesses and breaks and gives them the bread at supper in their home.    A word I've been living with all this past week is a Greek word, panentheism, that literally means "all in God, God in all."  I thought of these words in Ephesians 4: There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your call, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all.   Panentheism, all in God, God in all.  For me this radically changes everything and everyone I see.  When I look at Ray and Tabitha and each of you… and when I look at the daffodils in our backyard, or when I look at the food and juice or coffee I will drink after worship, I see God, I see Jesus!   I saw God when I was with Ledith on Thursday evening.  Ledith, long-time member of Faith and beloved child of God, is now at the precipice of her death.  When we softly sang together a verse of "Holy, Holy, Holy" and of "Beautiful Savior" and her favorite, all the verses of "How Great Thou Art," I saw God.   What a difference it makes when you and I look at any and all of the peoples and creatures of the Earth, all the vast and varied combinations of elements and molecules that comprise our common home.  Above all, through all, and in all is our crucified and risen Lord and God.  How could we not cherish and love and respect all of it?  How could we not think twice about trashing or misusing or exploiting any of it when we know that Jesus is in it?   So important that together we think and celebrate that Greek word, panentheism, all in God, God in all, God in everything.   But so important too that we mourn creation's brokenness together with God and with each other… If we felt the pain of loss each time an ecosystem was destroyed, a species wiped out, or a child killed by war or starvation, we wouldn't be able to continue living the way we do.  It would tear us apart inside…By speaking our concerns and giving voice to our feelings [to each other], we make them more visible not just to others but also to ourselves.  The more we draw issues into the open, the more inclined we become to tackle them…Rather than attempting to fix feelings of distress, we accept their validity and significance.  Doing this is in itself an act for the Great Turning. Active Hope, page 77   And these words from Archbishop Desmond Tutu: [Jesus'] supreme work is to reconcile us to God and to one another and, indeed, to all of God's creation.  It is possible to have a new kind of world where there will be more compassion, more gentleness, more caring, more laughter, more joy for all of God's creation, because that is God's dream.  And God says, "Help me. Help me, help me realize my dream."   And from Jim Antel, a public theologian and pastor in the United Church of Christ:  God is calling all of us to unleash our imaginations, unmuzzle our mouths, unbind our hands, unshackle our feet, and open our wallets.  Each of us must use our unique God-given gifts to hasten the day when each human heart is governed not by grief but by hope…not by selfishness but by sharing.  Yes—God still has a dream…As we live into God's dream, we will rediscover who we truly are and all of creation will be singing.                      Climate Church, Climate World,  pages 168-169   Because the world is about to turn… St. Peter writes, Make your minds ready for action…   Put your hope in nothing but the grace that will be given when Jesus Christ is revealed.  Be children of obedience…It is through Christ that you are believers in God, the God who raised Jesus from the dead into glory…Therefore, love one another constantly, from the heart.  [I Peter 1:13,21-22] By the grace and great mercy of God we are born anew every day into a living hope because Jesus lives "above all and through all and in all."  Jesus walks with us.  Everything changes when you and I see him in every thing and every one.  Therefore, love one another constantly, from the depths of your hearts.   Daniel Erlander in a little book entitled Baptized, We Live, writes, "The ruler of the universe hides himself in the common, in the stuff of this earth.  God lives in creation; he lives in all… Here is God… in the home, in the forest, in the face of a child, in the sunset, in human love, in the enemy, in the mountains, in the cry of the poor, in the sea, in the sharing of food,  in the prison, in the sunshine, in the hospital, in the rain, in the aged, in governments, in the dying, in the air, in the broken home, in the stranger, in outer space, in the third world, in death."    Daniel writes:  Because of Jesus, we see God in all, weeping where there is pain and alienation, rejoicing where there is wholeness and love.     So, because God in Jesus is with and in us and all of creation, albeit often incognito as on the road to Emmaus, we may dare to believe that the world is about to turn, that other powerful autocrats and dictators besides Prime Minister Orban will soon be brought low.  We can live with hope that soon compassion and respect and a just peace will rise up, albeit imperfectly, in the Middle East, in Eastern Europe, in Africa, and, yes, in our own country.   Imagine that one day, maybe 50 or 60 years from now, our descendants asked us three questions about when in our day there was a great turning: 1.    "Ancestor, I hear stories about the period you are living in, with wars and preparations for wars, with some people absurdly rich while huge numbers are starving and homeless, with poisons in the seas and soil and air, and with the dying of many species.  We are still experiencing the effects of all that.  What was it like for you to live with this knowledge?" 2.    "Ancestor, we have songs and stories that tell of what you and your friends did back then for the Great Turning… You must have felt lonely and confused at times, especially at the beginning.  What were some of the first steps you took?" 3.    "Ancestor, I know you didn't stop with those first actions on behalf of life on Earth.  Where did you find the strength to continue working so hard, despite all the obstacles and discouragement?"                                          Active Hope, page 155   Let us sing "God Bestows on Every Sense," a song of hope and of "signs of what the earth will be."   Amen.

In this episode's Song of the Week, Justin stumbled into the dark story involving Tommy Dilbeck, the country songwriter behind Eddy Arnold's signature hit "I'll Hold You In My Heart," which Elvis transformed into a bluesy jam at the American Sound 1969 sessions that worked so well it landed on the acclaimed "From Elvis in Memphis." But is the song merely one of romantic longing, or, given what we now know, a hint at a more subtly obsessive message that no one had previously picked up before?  Content warning: potentially upsetting descriptions of domestic violence drawn from period news reports between about 03:30-04:45. Then John pulls double-duty, spotlighting two significant home recordings from 1966, "Hide Thou Me" and "Show Me Thy Way, O Lord," during a period in which Elvis was seeking material for his upcoming gospel project - what would become the "How Great Thou Art" album - and returning to the work of one of his favorite gospel groups, The Statesmen Quartet, to consider songs for potential inclusion. John also gives a quick primer on who the Statesmen were, and how they influenced Elvis's choice of gospel material. I once had a cantor who recently had a baby. She wanted to minister quickly after her child was born, but balancing two children with varying work schedules was a constant challenge for her. I told her that we would welcome her back as a minister in any way that her schedule would allow. One morning, her husband had an unexpected work commitment, so she brought her toddler and infant with her to church. They were both incredibly well-behaved until the preparation of the gifts, but this didn't stop my cantor. With her toddler next to her leg and her infant on her hip, she sang “How Great Thou Art”. She looked at her infant as she sang, “O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder, consider all the works Thy hands have made….” There was not a dry eye in the house. She ministered to all of us in multiple ways that day, and she reminded me of the power of lay leadership. You know, we are so quick to cling to the role of the clergy, I think we often forget the presence of God that lives within us and flows through us as we minister. And that is the conversation we're having today. I sat down with Brother Louis Canter to discuss the importance of Lay Ecclesial ministry, a term that is either fresh or incredibly well-worn in your local diocesan vocabulary. Brother Louis believes that the key to the church's future lies within the lay ministers who serve the church with their time, talent and treasures, big and small:

What if worship isn't just singing, but fighting? Worship isn't just music—it's war for your soul. From Carl Boberg's thunderstorm poem that became How Great Thou Art to David's praise in Psalm 145, we see that worship is deeply personal, fully surrendered, generational, and rooted in gratitude. But in the middle of distractions, selfish desires, and the enemy's lies, worship becomes warfare. It's the battle to keep our attention and affection on the only One who is worthy. God alone can carry the full weight of our devotion without failing. That's why we say with confidence, “Then sings my soul, How Great Thou Art.”

The lesson explored the enduring legacy of Carl Boberg's poem "O Store Gud!. The hymn, "How Great Thou Art," has its origins in this Swedish poem inspired by a thunderstorm. It subsequently was translated and adapted into a globally recognized worship song. Examining the history of the hymn, the speaker addressed the controversy surrounding its inclusion in Methodist hymnals, highlighting the tension between devotional expression and confessional theology. Ultimately, the message emphasized the power of biblical truth and how it leads to personal devotion to God. Listeners are encouraged to find poetic and devotional ways to express their love and appreciation for the God that saves us. A great God understood through great theology should lead to great ways of worshipping the Lord. Poems and music are gifts of God to image God and enjoy God—who is the Poet of poets.

After five months in a hospital bed, Gracie came home—hooked to drains, fragile, and unable to sit up for more than a few minutes. I pulled her out of the truck, and just as we were about to head inside, she stopped. Eyes closed. Face tilted upward. “Oh… that feels wonderful.” It wasn't a miracle. It was a warm summer mountain breeze. But when you've been breathing hospital air for nearly half a year, that breeze feels like Eden. The cool of the day. In Hebrew: רוּחַ הַיּוֹם (ruach hayom)—the wind of the day, the gentle breath of God that walked with Adam and Eve through their brokenness. That's what this episode is about. Not just a hymn. Not just a breeze. But the presence of God showing up when suffering suffocates. I also talk candidly about a hard truth for many caregivers: “Lord, would You please just take them home?” That's not a death wish. That's not despair. That's faith reaching for mercy. How Great Thou Art belongs on the front line of every caregiver's hymnbook. That's why it's part of my new series: 30 Hymns Every Caregiver Should Know. Because sometimes your theology needs melody—when words fail and your soul forgets the tune of hope.

Intrigued by the premise presented by the recent Sony box sets like "Sunset Boulevard" describing Elvis's undubbed recordings as "pure," Justin decided to investigate the story behind the man who has borne most of the heavy criticism aimed at the production on Elvis's music, Felton Jarvis, who was Elvis's main producer from 1966-1977. While we've previously touched on Felton's work as a producer in our "Elvis and His Producers/Elvis as a Producer" episode, realizing we may not have given him a fair shake, on this episode Justin and Bec investigate Felton's early work at National Recording Corporation (NRC) in Atlanta, Georgia, his time at ABC-Paramount working with Tommy Roe, Fats Domino, Lloyd Price, the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section and.... "Vince Everett"? They trace Felton's move to RCA Victor producing many successful acts and hit records in the field of country music in the mid-1960s and, naturally, his first sessions with Elvis across 1966-1968, chief among which was the How Great Thou Art project, which won Elvis his first-ever Grammy Award. Laced throughout are stories of a warm-hearted, good-natured Georgia boy - who loved Elvis Presley and dreamed so hard to one day produce his hero's music that he manifested it - from collaborators, friends and historians who have tried to relay some of Felton's story, as well as audio from Felton himself in conversation with RCA's Jerry Flowers in 1980, discussing his career in hindsight. Part 2 will even more directly interrogate the idea that Felton was, as so frequently repeated by Elvis fans over nearly 4 decades, singularly to blame for the "syrupy" overdubs that were a hallmark of Elvis's 1970s output, as Justin builds a case to convince Bec that she and everyone else - including sometimes even Justin himself - has been wrong all these years! David passed away this past week at the age of 82. The guys select some of their favorite tracks featuring David's work, and also remember Wink Martindale and Will Hutchins who both passed away as well. For Song of the Week, call it a belated Easter segment, with Justin selecting Elvis's versions of the country standard "There Goes My Everything" and its gospel counterpart "He Is My Everything" from the early 1970s. Today Daily Devotional

You were shown these things so that you might know that the Lord is God; besides him there is no other. — Deuteronomy 4:35 I live close to Lake Michigan on the South Haven, Michigan, side. It is my favorite go-to place; sometimes I am drawn to Lake Michigan to experience God's greatness. As I stand on the shore, I sing, “How Great Is Our God,” “How Great Thou Art,” “In Christ Alone,” and “He Is Lord.” These songs are like stories that remind me who God is. As I listen to the sounds of big waves crashing on rocks, seagulls squawking, and wind roaring, I proclaim that the God of wonders is holy. He is the Lord of heaven above and earth below. Gazing at the vastness of the sky and the lake, both perfectly blue, I am awestruck and speechless. It seems as if God's finger has blended the line where the lake meets the sky; it appears seamless. God is present and actively working in our lives. He wants us to know that he is the Lord our God—in the past, present, and future. We praise God for letting us know him through his words, nature, works, and especially through his Son, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. Where or when are you drawn into the awesomeness of God and reminded that the Lord is God and there is no other? O God of wonders, I am in awe of you. I praise you that you are God and there is no other. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Carrell.   For months, my wife Ginger and I have devoted all of our available time—often most of our waking hours—to writing columns and talking on the media, not just in support of Trump but also in support of all of us facing the truth that enormous powers are gathering like weird and wild beasts descending on America to crush and devour her before she can stand up against them.   We spoke of the most important challenges the politicians on either side seem afraid to confront—that this election was one of the great cosmic clashes between good and evil in the history of the world. That meant Donald Trump would need the support of millions of us if he won—and even if he lost. The battle is for the ages and for right now.   To me, the election was the most important since George Washington was accused of wanting to be King. Instead, the great man respected the Constitution far more than he wanted to rule men, and he became our first President. In doing so, he assured the fledgling constitutional democracy of as good a start as possible.   Now Trump, accused that he too wanted to be a king or dictator, was running for his second term as President. My wife and I, like many other freedom fighters, knew he was on our side against all sorts of evil, from communism and collectivism to the utter destruction of America, paving the way for godless globalist domination.   I love music, but my appreciation does not go as deeply as many others. Yet something overcame me in the days before the election. I began listening to the Battle Hymn of the Republic, all kinds of versions of it as if seeking the perfect one to make my own. I wasn't sure what I would do with it other than to reinforce my soul. Here are the opening words from the first and fourth stanzas which impressed me the most:   Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord: He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored; He hath loosed the fatal lightning of his terrible swift sword: His truth is marching on.   He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat; He is sifting out the hearts of men before his judgment-seat: Oh! be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my feet! Our God is marching on.   After Donald Trump's victory in the voting for President of the United States of America, his assembled team sang “How Great Thou Art.” It was heartfelt and beautiful. It was perfectly appropriate. All of us had just witnessed a miracle:   O Lord my God, When I in awesome wonder, Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made; I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, Thy power throughout the universe displayed.   Then sings my soul, My savior God, to Thee, How great Thou art, How great Thou art. Then sings my soul, My Savior God, to Thee, How Great Thou Art, How Great Thou art!   For me, the two songs summed up my struggles about this incredible election day. The Battle Hymn of the Republic represented my awareness that we are in a great war, greater even than the Civil War, where the song gained fame because today's war is really a world war, not merely for America's heart and soul but for the heart and soul of humankind.   If the corrupt progressives, the corrupt capitalists, the Chinese Communists, the E.U., NATO, WHO, and the U.N., and all self-appointed elites have their way, they will destroy our way of life. We must bring all our skills and gifts to the war to build a golden era, or we will be driven into millennia of global suffering afflicting every corner of the Earth.   How Great Thou Art, sung after the victory, was lovely. It was a relief to take a moment and thank God. But we must not let ourselves stray far from the urgent sounds of “Mine eyes have seen the glory of the Coming of the Lord,” with which soldiers marched forward to confront death in the name of human freedom and God.   Now, what does this have to do with today's interview, which took place the day after the election? We purposely chose our guest, J. J. Carrell, a man who recently retired from 24 years of service in the United States Border Patrol. He looks incredibly young and strong, by our standards, still in his forties, married, with a 13-year-old son. J.J. was ideal for today as an extraordinarily well-informed and articulate man who loves God and truly stands for America First.   If I'd been able to do it, I would have alternated some background music for the show, playing, at one time or another, the Battle Hymn of the Republic or How Great Thou Art. Try hearing these two songs in your mind as background as you listen to this remarkable hour about those of us who praise God for the election but fear skipping even a single beat in the escalating war between good and evil.   His website has more information about J.J. Justin and Bec wrap their discussion on the recorded and filmed rehearsals undertaken for the Las Vegas engagement documented in the feature film "That's The Way It Is". The duo continues through July and August 1970's rehearsal dates, right up to August 10, the day Elvis would take the stage in front of paying customers, and reflect on the insights into Elvis and his band's creative processes along the way. Then Gurdip taps in for Song of the Week, selecting the rowdy gospel number "If the Lord Wasn't Walking By My Side", which Elvis cut for his "How Great Thou Art" album. Justin's Song of the Week is Elvis's 1970 version of Joe South's plea for empathy and understanding, "Walk A Mile in My Shoes." Our primary resource for this episode was the content contained within the Follow That Dream release "That's The Way It Is: 50th Anniversary Collectors Edition" including the book by David English and Pal Granlund.  Don't forget that the Netflix documentary "Return of the King: The Fall and Rise of Elvis Presley" releases today, November 13, 2024 on Netflix. It's Thursday, November 7th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark and Adam McManus 7 of 11 Southeast Asian nations persecute Christians International Christian Concern reports seven out of eleven Southeast Asian nations persecute Christians. Those nations are Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Vietnam. In Brunei and Cambodia, officials prohibit Christians from sharing their faith. Burma's military often targets Christians with violence. Believers face blasphemy charges in Malaysia and Indonesia for criticizing Islam. And authorities in Laos and Vietnam try to force Christians to renounce their faith.  There are also at least 45 Christians who are missing, detained, or imprisoned across Burma, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam. Hebrews 13:3 says, “Remember the prisoners as if chained with them—those who are mistreated—since you yourselves are in the body also.” Donald Trump wins in a landslide Donald Trump won the U.S. presidential election in a landslide as results from the polls came in yesterday.  Trump secured 292 electoral votes as of Wednesday, according to the Associated Press. This surpasses the 270 electoral votes necessary to win. Trump also secured the popular vote with over 72 million votes. Trump won the swing states of Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. The Associated Press had not called Arizona or Nevada as of yesterday, but Trump was leading in both states. Trump addressed supporters following the victory, acknowledging God's protection on his life. TRUMP: “Many people have told me that God spared my life for a reason. (cheers) And that reason was to save our country and to restore America to greatness. Now, we are going to fulfill that mission together. We're going to fulfill that mission.” Proverbs 21:1 reminds us, “The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD, like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes.” Christians break out in worship after Trump victory speech Remarkably, right after Trump's victory speech, the crowd at the watch party at the Palm Beach Florida Convention Center burst out in spontaneous worship, singing “How Great Thou Art.” The video was captured on the phone of former New York State Rep. Ben Geller. Listen. CROWD: “O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder consider all the worlds Thy hands have made. I see the stars. I hear the roaring thunder, Thy power throughout the universe displayed. “Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee. How great Thou art. How great Thou art. Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee. How great Thou art. How great Thou art.” (cheers) Kamala Harris' belated concession speech champions abortion After refusing to congratulate Trump on Election Night, after he had won the 270 electoral votes necessary, Kamala Harris delivered a concession speech at 4:00pm Eastern on November 6th at Howard University, her alma mater. HARRIS: “Earlier today, I spoke with President-elect Trump and congratulated him on his victory. (boos) I also told him that we will help him and his team with their transition and that we will engage in a peaceful transfer of power.” (cheers) She appeared to imply that she hopes to run for president again. HARRIS: “While I concede this election, I do not concede the fight that fueled this campaign.” (cheers) And, not surprisingly, she exhibited her greatest passion when she championed baby-killing in the womb. HARRIS: “I will never give up the fight for a future where Americans can pursue their dreams, ambitions and aspirations, where the women of America have the freedom to make decisions about their own body and not have their government telling them what to do.” (cheers) Republicans won control of the U.S. Senate Republicans also won control of the U.S. Senate following Tuesday's election. They now have 52 seats in the Senate, surpassing the necessary 50 seats for a majority. The GOP flipped seats in Montana, Ohio, and West Virginia where Tim Sheehy, Bernie Moreno, and Jim Justice were victorious respectively. Neither party has won control of the House of Representatives with 44 more races yet to be called as of Wednesday. Republicans had 202 seats and Democrats had 189 seats. A party needs at least 218 seats for a majority.   3 pro-abortion amendments failed, 7 passed Voters across 10 states also decided on abortion ballot initiatives on Tuesday.  Pro-abortion constitutional amendments failed in Florida, Nebraska, and South Dakota. Tragically, similar pro-abortion amendments passed in Arizona, Colorado, Maryland, Missouri, New York, Montana, and Nevada.  Stock market and Crytpo up after Trump's victory The stock market reacted positively to the news of Donald Trump becoming the 47th president of the United States. The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged 3.6%. The S&P 500 rose 2.5%, and the Nasdaq composite jumped 3%.  Crypto also surged with Bitcoin reaching an all-time high of over $76,000.  Boeing no longer bowing to sexual perversion Wokeness Bloomberg reports that Boeing is the latest high-profile corporation to end its diversity, equity, and inclusion department. The airplane manufacturer will instead focus on talent and employee experience. The change comes under Boeing's new Chief Executive Officer Kelly Ortberg who is cutting about 10% of the company's workforce.  The change also comes as many U.S. companies face pressure from conservative activists to cut their diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. Billy Graham's birthday And finally, today is the anniversary of Billy Graham's birthday. He was born on November 7, 1918 in Charlotte, North Carolina.  Graham was ordained as a Southern Baptist minister, becoming one of the greatest modern evangelists. He preached to almost a quarter billion people in person. His messages also reached millions more through radio, TV, and film.  Listen to this excerpt of one of his sermons. GRAHAM: “David, the man after God's own heart, also became guilty of sin. He became guilty of adultery and guilty of murder, and he suffered for it the rest of his life. God forgave him, but the scars remained. “And many of you are trying to flee from God tonight. You know that you need a personal relationship with Christ. You're not sure that your sins are forgiven. You're not sure that if you died you'd go to Heaven. If you have a doubt about it, you ought to settle it this very night. You're fleeing from God.” Graham's Gospel crusades took him all over the world even behind the Iron Curtain and into China and North Korea. There is so much plasticity and pretense in the world today that when I come across the authentic such as a little kid bawling because his sister kicked him, it restores my interest in life. He isn't trying to sell me something or even raise money for a good cause, it's true feeling. His sense of injustice is real. I think he should hit her, which might spare his having to go through expensive therapy in years to come, but he does not. Perhaps he'll be a stand-up comic instead.I find authenticity in church, in the prayers, in the psalm, and last Sunday we sang “How Great Thou Art” and it was so joyful it reduced me to rubble. We sang all four verses and the chorus built each time around and the third and fourth choruses were so euphoric, they would've melted a stone-cold atheist and my bass voice got shaky, hearing those sopranos soaring. People held their arms in the air, we were freed from our Episcopalian decorum into realms of pure joy, I get teared up now writing about it.Garrison KeillorJason Keillor, EngineerJason Keillor, Original Music This is a public episode.
