She has given a number of public talks and published on these topics in a range of settings.Her first book. Eberhard Jüngel and Existence, Being Before the Cross, was published in 2021: it explores the theologian Eberhard Jüngel's philosophical inheritance and how his thought provides a useful paradigm for the relation between philosophy and theology. The cross is central to understanding both Christ and Christian discipleship. Yet we recoil from the path that involves suffering, hardship, or personal denial. Nonetheless, in today’s passage we learn the essential and central role of the cross in the Christian life. Join us as we learn!

If millions of people are reading a Christian book or watching a Christian television series, God must be at work, right?If tens of thousands of people are attending a mega-church with 15 multisite locations, God must be being honored, correct?If bigger is evidence of God's favor, Jesus must not have been very favored by God. By the end of His ministry, He had few followers, was falsely convicted, and died a bloody death on the cross. By today's Evangelical definition of success, Jesus was a failure.Jesus' leading disciple, Peter, actually rebuked Jesus for saying He was going to suffer and die: “Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, “God forbid it, Lord! This shall never happen to You.” (Matthew 16:22).Peter had a flawed human perspective of success for Christ, not one that would include death on a cross. Christ addressed Peter's perspective when He responded, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God's interests, but man's.” (Matthew 16:23)The prevailing Evangelical definition of success can be summarized by the “theology of glory”—bigger audiences, more professions of faith, more acceptable, more smiley.Jesus defined God's interest, the “theology of the cross”: “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.” (Matthew 16:24)Now that doesn't sound very desirable. Youth group leaders wouldn't think of attracting young people by saying that. After all, pizza and games bring ‘em in. And “bringing them in” is the ultimate metric—bigger numbers means success. What is the difference of being a theology of the cross, and the theology of glory? Gretchen Ronnevik and Katie Koplin talk about what it means to have the cross as the center of your theology. We talk about Luther's Heidelberg Disputaitons of 1518, a year after he posted the 95 thesis, and why it was so revolutionary and contrary to what the church was teaching at the time. This is the center of "calling a thing what it is" and understanding suffering, rather than glory. The cross turns everything on our head about what we think of God, and what he wants from us, and often makes us uncomfortable, but ultimately fixes our eyes on Jesus as the author and perfector of our faith. ***This episode has some technical difficulties, and the sound isn't as good as past episodes. Joshua Pauling, author, “Christianity Is More than True; It is Deepest Reality” Cruciformity: Paul and Us, the Table and the Cross

The guys talk about something that might at first seem obscure, but actually is one of the most relatable topics, "Theology of Glory" vs. "Theology of the Cross."  This has been a HUGE lesson for me over the years and has brought me much comfort and understanding of how reality works.  Louis and Sam give some definitions, then jump into Isaiah 6:5, the so-called sin of "unclean lips."  What does this mean?  Then they explore a famous quote from Carl Jung: "To this day God is the name by which I designate all things which cross my willful path violently and recklessly, all things which upset my subjective views, plans and intentions and change the course of my life for better or worse."  From this, they discern that God is most interested in the health of your soul and, as Louis put it, will gladly "shake the loaded gun from your hand," if you're in danger.  God will appear rough at times in order to help us put Him back in His rightful place in our lives.  This is an important conversation about how to see the world right-side-up, instead of calling 'evil' good and 'good' evil.  So, live in the storm, and let it do its work.         Won't you please consider becoming part of the BS Crew?  To find out more and join, go to https://www.patreon.com/bumperstickerfaith.       Feel free to comment and be sure to share.  Thanks for listening. We believe that all of the Bible--from Genesis to Revelation--is a testimony about Jesus. We believe there is law and gospel in the Old and New Testaments. These convictions are historical, confessional, Reformed convictions. Yet, many in our day get very nervous about seeing Christ in all of the Bible and of understanding the Scriptures in terms of law and gospel. Our fear is that, at the end of it, well-meaning people discourage the saints from seeing Christ for them in all of the Scriptures. We are often made to think that the Christian life is one where we move from triumph to triumph--and from spiritual experience to spiritual experience. But that is not reality. It is not the promise of the Scripture. This side of the resurrection, we are learning to trust Christ in the midst of weakness and the battle against the flesh. We are learning to depend more upon grace. It is not a bad thing for us to come to a place where we know Christ is all we have. Listen in as I discuss and dissect the main differences between two major theology standpoints within the Church.

Tullian is a south Florida native. The middle of seven children, he dropped out of high school and got kicked out of his house at 16 years old. After a few years of running from God, God captured him and gave him a burning desire to reach a broken world with God's boundless grace. He eventually graduated from Columbia International University, where he earned a degree in philosophy, and Reformed Theological Seminary in Orlando, where he earned his Master of Divinity degree. 

A grandson of the late evangelist Billy Graham, Tullian was the founding pastor of New City Church in his hometown of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, which later merged with the historic Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in 2009, where he served as Senior Pastor until June 2015. He wrote a number of best-selling books, traveled extensively around the country speaking, founded a ministry called LIBERATE—a ministry that sought to “connect God's inexhaustible grace to an exhausted world” through conferences, books, a website, a daily radio program, and a weekly TV broadcast—and then it all came crashing down in late spring of 2015. As a result of infidelity, his first marriage ended in divorce and life as he knew it came to an end. In the aftermath of his season of self-destruction, Tullian met his current wife Stacie—a native Texan. They have been married since August 2016, and together they have five children and two grandchildren. Unlike Tullian, Stacie comes from a long history of family brokenness. Adultery, addiction, and abuse make up just a small portion of the many dysfunctional narratives of her large and extended family. When Stacie was 18, she became an unwed teenage mom. Over the next 17 years, she experienced much pain and loss—infidelity, two marriages, and two divorces. All of those hard and painful experiences taught her much about sin and grace, desperation, and deliverance. And as a result, she developed a huge burden for people who have crashed and burned, people who are recovering from their own damaged lives. In the years following Tullian's crash and burn, he was nursed back to health by a handful of seasoned pastors, counselors, and friends, in addition to his loving wife, Stacie. Then in 2017, they started traveling and speaking at churches, recovery places, and other gatherings about how God heals broken people. In early 2019, after being out of pastoral ministry for nearly four years, a group of people from Jupiter, Florida, approached Tullian and Stacie about the possibility of starting a new church. After months of conversations and meetings, prayer and counsel—and with the unequivocal blessing and support of their pastor and the elders of their home church in Cape Coral—Tullian and Stacie relocated to Palm Beach County to start The Sanctuary. As partners in life and ministry, Tullian and Stacie are wholeheartedly committed to declaring and delivering God's boundless love to broken people.

Jesus taught his disciples the nature of his messianic mission three times as mission of death and resurrection. Not only was this path applied to him but also to the individual disciple he called, the community he built, and the leaders he developed.
