The most important moment in your story is the moment when your protagonist is faced with a decision.Do this or do that? Stay or go? Speak or remain silent? Flee or fight? In fact, your protagonist will face dozens of decisions throughout your novel. They'll face at least one in every scene: moments where they experience a crisis, when whatever happens next hinges on the decision they make. But how long should this moment take? Does your protagonist need to waffle between two options for several pages in every scene? Do they even need to know the full weight of what they're deciding? In this episode, I'm sharing the art and science of the perfect crisis. You'll learn:When to write a very long crisis and make your character's decision-making process very clearHow to write a short and snappy crisis your reader might not even notice (but YOU know it's there!)Why there MUST be consequences for your character's choiceHow to include a crisis in every scene WITHOUT making your character annoyingly indecisiveHow to create far-reaching consequences of the crisis choice—even if your character can't predict them in the momentAnd more!Plus, I'll break down the opening scenes of two novels with very different crises. You'll see how Natalie C. Parker writes a five-page-long crisis in Seafire—and why it works. And you'll see how Naomi Novik writes a crisis so short you could blink and you'd miss it in Spinning Silver. Yet the choice the protagonist makes sparks the conflict of the whole book.A well-written crisis can be the absolute best moment in a scene. Find out how to master the crisis in this episode! This episode was inspired by a listener question from David. Thanks, David!Have an editing question you'd like answered? This week on Deadline City we are joined by an old friend and critically acclaimed author and anthologist, Natalie C. Parker. We pick her brain about how she creates community through workshops and retreats at her company, Madcap Retreats, as well as other author events. The social aspect of being an author is a big part of #authorlife, and we talk about our own experiences navigating these waters. Support the show (http://Ko-fi.com/deadlinecity)

Book Vs Movie (Replay) “Love, Simon” The 2015 novel Vs the 2018 movie The Margos are back in high school with this super-charming story of a teenager, Simon Spier, who is hiding a big secret from his friends and family. Well, except for one person whom he emails daily but has no idea who he is as they use fake names to communicate. You see, Simon (who identifies as “Jacques” in his emails with “Blue”) is gay and struggling with his growing sexual interest. Simon is loved by his parents and friends and feels mostly safe in his Atlanta-adjacent home but he still worries about being bullied in high school by not well-meaning jocks and bullies. Plus, he worries about disappointing his parents (though they come across as being very open-minded in both the novel and film.) In fact, everything seems to be going well for Simon until fellow student Martin finds out his secret and blackmails him into setting him up with Abby (who is the first person Simon comes out to and that causes a problem with his best friend Leah. Lots of “friend” drama here!) The book (titled Simon Vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda) debuted in 2015 by first-time novelist Becky Albertalli who spent years working as a clinical psychologist working mainly with teenagers. It was a big hit upon its release and was soon sold to be adapted into the film. In this show, we discuss the differences between book and movie, and there are several to dive into here. Which version did the Margos like better? Check out the link below to find out! We are sponsored by Penguin Books in this ep! Natalie C. Parker, author of the Beware the Wild duology offers her own feminist take on an adventure with Seafire, which follows Caledonia Styx, the captain of an all-female ship, on her quest to save her brother and take down a vicious warlord’s powerful fleet. This is the first book in a trilogy about Caledonia whose family was killed by warlord Aric Athair and his bloodthirsty army of Bullets. She captains the ship Mors Navis with a crew of women and girls like her who lost their homes and families because of Aric and his men. Parker is a lifelong fan of SciFi but has always felt a frustration with the lack of strong female characters in her favorite books. In fact, Natalie remembers telling her mother at a young age that In regards The Hobbit, “MOM, do you know how many girls are in this book? ONE. And she was a spider.” This book is thrilling, makes for an excellent gift and will be on sale 50% off the weekend between Friday, November 22nd and Sunday, November 24th at all Barnes & Nobles locations throughout the U.S.! In this ep the Margos discuss : The story behind author Becky Albertalli’s career in psychology and how it influences her writing The major differences between the book and the Greg Berlantani movie How the subject of “coming out” is handled between both The casting of the movie including Nick Robinson (Simon,) Jennifer Garner (Emily,) Josh Duhamel (Jack,) Katherine Langford (Leah,) Logan Miller (Martin,) Alexandra Shipp (Abby,) Keiynan Lonsdale (Bram,) Tony Hale (Mr. Worth,) and Natasha Rothwell (Ms. Albright) Clips used: Love, Simon trailer Montage of kids coming out as “straight” to their parents Simon coming out to his parents Simon’s mother tells him to “exhale” Ms. Albright calls out the homophobic kids Outro Music: Waterloo Sunset by The Kinks Book Vs. This week, Erin and Courtney dive into two great adventures, Seafire by Natalie C. Parker and Ship of Smoke and Steel by Django Wexler. They talk ships, sisters, monsters and more! They also answer three listener questions: Can you name one thing that you did or said, as a teen, that you still cringe about? Tell us about a time you wished you had stood up for someone or acted differently like when someone was being bullied etc. And what was your most prized possession? And don't forget you can join the conversation, share stories, ask questions about library life or add questions to our jar of teen angst at teentitletalk@gmail.com
