Listen to The Brave Files More about Alan via @theatre_podcast on Instagram and listen to The Theatre Podcast with Alan Seales EPISODE TAKEAWAYS Venessa dreamed of being an animator as a child and fell in love with sequential art Sequential artist is the fancy term for comic art One of the original viral “fan artists,” Venesssa never lost sight of her passion even when working in voiceover and marketing for The Federal Government When her day job got a little too heavy, Venessa would retreat to a novel for pleasure and create sketches from those works. A random share on Twitter turned viral and catapulted Venessa to the core of fandom love. Much of Venessa's artwork is driven by the desire to get books she loves in front of a larger audience. She has always worked to support BIPOC and LGBTQ authors and help raise awareness for their work. Venessa's art is mostly digital art because it's fast and doesn't take a lot of expensive resources but she begins with pencil and paper sketches. Eventually, it became impossible to have a day job and make art professionally. She chose her own graphic novel and we're all so glad she did. Be the ladder - Venessa loves helping other artists to value themselves and fight for their fair share, especially in the face of AI art. We love Venessa's approach to “failure” She believes in a “Bless your mistakes” approach to life. In the episode, we talk about emotional deficit - what it is and how to deal with it. There is NO wasted time - ever. All of Venessa's past experiences are showing up in her own work and she's wildly grateful for all of her experiences. It wasn't until Venessa was in her 30s that she began to untangle her identity and embrace her Queer identity. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Tune in as Seth Vargas (Movie Friends) teams up with Arthur to break down As We See It, the 2022 Prime Video series that revolves around a trio of autistic mid-20s roommates who are trying to figure out their lives and gain independence. Talking points that the hosts bring up on this episode include the series being cringey in a good way, the uneven arc of Aaron Eckhart's career, and doing away with unnecessary social customs like the one where people say “can I ask you a question?” before asking the question itself. Created by Jason Katims, As We See It stars Rick Glassman, Albert Rutecki, Sue Ann Pien, Sosie Bacon, Chris Pang, Joe Mantegna, Délé Ogundiran, Vella Lovell, Tal Anderson, Alyssa Jirrels, Adan James Carrillo, Casey Mills, David Futernick, and Andrew Duff. We couldn't help but discuss Becky Albertalli's new book Imogen, Obviously which feels like a semi-autobiographical account of the author's own experiences coming out as bisexual.Yes there's fluffy, bubblegum romance, but Albertalli is doing something far more complicated with the book's "villain" Gretchen and her dangerous gatekeeping of queer identities. Becky Albertalli's new novel, Imogen, Obviously, expertly tackles the complexities of sexuality, friendship, and queer identity. Friend of the pod Sammie (aka booksdogsandcoffee) filled in this week as co-host! Synopsis: Imogen Scott holds the World's Greatest Ally title so, when her best friend Lili needs some support at her new college campus, Imogen's ready to bring her Ally A game! Here's the thing- Lili has told all her college friends that her and Imogen used to date. And none of them know that Imogen is a raging hetero—not even Lili's best friend, Tessa. Of course, the more time Imogen spends with chaotic, freckle-faced Tessa, the more she starts to wonder if her truth was ever all that straight to begin with. We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we loved the book! Thanks again Sammie for hanging out with us! Want to grab your own copy? Check out our store! We begin this episode talking about ghosts, because of course we do. We also chat about E3's influence and our relationship with it as both fans and games journalists, but honestly that bit isn't nearly exciting as when we're chatting about spooky things that have happened to us. We eventually remember what this podcast is actually about, quickly moving on to chat about our favourite games from this year's endless parade of Not-E3 showcases. Kicking us off, Rebecca can't wait to open her own portable second-hand bookshop in the brilliant looking Tiny Bookshop. She's also keen to get her hands on Still Wakes The Deep, an enigmatic horror game set aboard an oil rig off the coast of Scotland. Rachel on the other hand can't wait to play more of En Garde!, but she's also been enjoying clambering up cliff faces in Jusant and is intrigued by recursive puzzler Cocoon (which our Ed also reckons is good). True to form, Liam is excited for anti-capitalist cat game Revenant Hill, the gorgeous Sword Of The Sea and the quiet, rural vibes of Kibu. Seeing as its pride month (happy pride month!) section two is all about our picks from Itch's generous Queer Games Bundle. As always we wrap things up with our hyperfixations. Rachel has run out of things to watch, and insists you all give her recommendations by sending an email to podcast@rockpapershotgun.com. Rebecca has been reading Imogen, Obviously by Becky Albertalli and Liam has been reading Hot Milk by Deborah Levy. Indiescovery is a podcast from RockPaperShotgun.com. Catching up on some hot take submissions from the past couple months, we discuss the politics of "coming out," especially within the context of online queer fanbases bullying celebrities out of the closet re: Kit Connor (whom we mistakenly call the name of an American Girl Doll in this episode lol), Becky Albertalli, and the misusage of the term "queerbait" in the current media landscape. Sunny complains extensively about the popular liberal queer assimilationist politics especially as mediated by the internet, and references the following books this episode— The Society of the Spectacle by Guy DeBord, Lesbian Choices by Claudia Card, The Persistent Desire: A Butch-Femme Reader edited by Joan Nestle, and probably some other titles. We talk about using the word "dyke," the loneliness of lesbianism and isolation of navigating the world as someone who doesn't center men, history of autistic lesbians, and online queer community vs. IRL lesbian spaces (and the lack of them.) We discuss an essay collection we both adored but that Renaissance connected with on a spiritual and psychic level; Girls Can Kiss Now by Jill Gutowitz. We talk all about the lesbian pop culture hilarity it compasses, as well as how earnest and genuine the writing feels. Jill, please come on the podcast! For media recommendations, Sunny really enjoyed watching an Irish lesbian film A Date For Mad Mary (2016) in their COVID quarantine era, and Renaissance raves about Tár (2022). Love from Mecca to Medina by S. K. Ali On the trip of a lifetime, Adam and Zayneb must find their way back to each other in this surprising and romantic sequel to the “bighearted, wildly charming” (Becky Albertalli, New York Times bestselling author) Love from A to Z. Adam and Zayneb. Perfectly matched. Painfully apart. Adam is in Doha, Qatar, making a map of the Hijra, a historic migration from Mecca to Medina, and worried about where his next paycheck will come from. Zayneb is in Chicago, where school and extracurricular stresses are piling on top of a terrible frenemy situation, making her miserable. Then a marvel occurs: Adam and Zayneb get the chance to spend Thanksgiving week on the Umrah, a pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina, in Saudi Arabia. Adam is thrilled; it's the reboot he needs and an opportunity to pray for a hijra in real life: to migrate to Zayneb in Chicago. Zayneb balks at the trip at first, having envisioned another kind of vacation, but then decides a spiritual reset is calling her name too. And they can't wait to see each other—surely, this is just what they both need. But the trip is nothing like what they expect, from the appearance of Adam's former love interest in their traveling group to the anxiety gripping Zayneb when she's supposed to be “spiritual.” As one wedge after another drives them apart while they make their way through rites in the holy city, Adam and Zayneb start to wonder: was their meeting just an oddity after all? Or can their love transcend everything else like the greatest marvels of the world?

Tune in as J.W. Friedman and Chris Collision hop over from the bad-book podcast I Don't Even Own a Television to break down Verity, the 2018 psychological thriller novel by bestselling romance author Colleen Hoover (It Ends with Us, November 9). The chills never stop as the book follows broke thriller writer Lowen Ashleigh on the trail of dark secrets she uncovers while ghostwriting for comatose author Verity Crawford. But are said chills worth it in the end? On top of diving into all that, the hosts translate the numeral versions of their windup scores into letter grades, envision Dr. Frasier Crane as a Chucky doll, repeatedly compare Verity (the book, not the character) to The Push by Ashley Audrain and We Need to Talk About Kevin, and express their thoughts on the romance trope of wiping food off a lover's lips with your bare thumbs/fingers—an extremely popular and cheesy trope for which Arthur has a soft spot. TW: child abuse, parental neglect, murder, suicidal ideation, fatphobia, ableism, abortion attempts, mention of rape (apologies for being remiss enough to forget to bring up that last trigger pre-plot recap) Spoilers start at 17:15 Additional spoilers: The Girl on the Train, The Boy Good Word: • J.: Showtime's Yellowjackets • Chris: Licorice Pizza • Arthur: the What If It's Us series (both the first book and its sequel Here's to Us) by Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera Reach out at email2centscritic@yahoo.com if you want to recommend things to watch and read, share anecdotes, or just say hello! We last minute recorded a bonus episode for today due to Becky Albertalli's coming out post. We asked Dom to step in and talked a bit about his friendship with Alex, his coming out moments, and his Catholic Roman Guard gay realization. Onwards to Becky's article, we wanted to discuss the fine line between queer #ownvoices narratives and forcing authors to come out to prove authentic queer representation. We grapple with coming out experiences and how to be inclusive in creating safe spaces for people to have their coming out journey's on their own timeline. #ownvoices is an important tool, not a weapon, in helping marginalized people identify a story/author that has similar experiences to your own. It should not be used to force people to disclose information. We felt this was an important topic to discuss, and one we plan to KEEP discussing and learning from
