In this episode of the Thoughtful Entrepreneur, your host Josh Elledge speaks to https://vikramraya.com/ (Dr. Vikram Raya). Dr. Raya is a cardiologist and also the founder and CEO of Limitless MD and the CEO and founding partner of https://vikingcapllc.com/ (Viking Capital). Dr. Raya says he's most passionate about health, wealth, and mindset. Dr. Raya went into cardiology after he saw his family suffer from cardiac issues. He admits, though, that when he went into the medical field, he lost his connection to his patients because of how transactional the industry is. Dr. Raya opened a functional medicine clinic by broadening his income horizons; he began investing in real estate, which is how Viking Capital came about. During this time, colleagues and friends came to Dr. Raya asking for coaching and consulting on how he managed to open a practice, practice with passion, and invest in real estate. This is how Limitless MD was born. Josh and Dr. Raya also discuss how you have to take breaks from working and practice self-care. This is constant active recovery and business owners and leaders are mental athletes. This self care time is integral to your health and wellness, according to Dr. Raya. He also shares health insights on how to maximize your heart health while juggling your busy life. He discusses several ways, one of which is your heart rate variation. HRV defines your heart beat to beat durability and those heart rate variations can be driven by stress – your HRV drops when you don't take a break. He also advises good and powerful sleep and nutrition. There are also ways to check how clogged your arteries could be, as well as ways to keep your insulin under control. Watch over these aspects and you will increase your longevity, according to Dr. Raya. Josh then asks Dr. Raya about the truth about the medical industry. Stress and politics burnout physicians and make many of them regret entering the field. To temper this, Dr. Raya advises that they begin exploring ways to incorporate more easy, lucrative, and fun things into their life and business. He also talks about chasing the five freedoms. The five freedoms are found in 1) time freedom, 2) geographic freedom, 3) financial freedom, 4) freedom from dis-ease, and 5) freedom from stress. Many business owners are still operating rather than owning their businesses. Grant yourself true freedom and build your business to be successful and scalable without your daily presence. But not all are celebrating: 'Nightmare Alley' found coal in its Christmas stocking. Sony and Marvel's Spider-Man: No Way Home spun a record-breaking web in its box office debut, grossing $260 million from 4,336 theaters to secure the second-biggest domestic opening of all time at the box office despite growing worries over the COVID-19 omicron variant. Monday's final number of $260 million came in ahead of Sunday's estimate of $253 million to supplant Avengers: Infinity War as the No. 2 launch ever, not adjusted for inflation. Overseas — where the new variant is even more of a concern in certain markets, and particularly in Europe — the movie also made history, grossing $340.8 million — likewise an uptick over Sunday's estimate of $334.2 million — for a revised global total of $600.8 million (without China). That's the No. 3 global opening ever, not adjusted for inflation. “This weekend's historic results, from all over the world and in the face of many challenges, reaffirm the unmatched cultural impact that exclusive theatrical films can have when they are made and marketed with vision and resolve,” says Sony Motion Picture Group chair-CEO Tom Rothman, who has remained a huge proponent of an exclusive theatrical release. Spider-Man: No Way Home set numerous other records as moviegoing returned to pre-pandemic levels for the first time in a defining moment for the box office recovery. Hollywood, however, would feel much better if the wealth were being spread around. Even as No Way Home prospered, Guillermo del Toro's Nightmare Alley became the latest adult-skewing title to sorely disappoint, with a fifth-place weekend opening of $3 million despite a well-known director and A-list cast. And Steven Spielberg's West Side Story tumbled a steep 67 percent in its second weekend, furthering the narrative that midrange movies and adult-skewing films are an endangered species theatrically amid the rise of streaming. No Way Home is the first film in the COVID-19 era to zoom past $100 million in its domestic launch (until now, the biggest start was just $90 million). There's more: The tentpole has already grossed more than any pandemic-era release has earned in its entire run domestically, a list topped by Marvel's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings ($224.5 million). The Sony and Marvel movie was buoyed by a coveted A+ CinemaScore, moviegoers ages 18-34 and glowing exit scores, including a “definite recommend” score of 90 percent. (Rivals say the exits are “unreal.”) Spider-Man also attracted an ethnically diverse audience and did huge business in Imax theaters, which turned in $36.2 million globally, the No. 6 showing of all time in terms of Imax weekend openings. Avengers: Endgame leads the list of all-time domestic openings with $357 million, followed by Avengers: Infinity War ($257.6 million), Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($248 million), Star Wars: The Last Jedi ($220 million) and Jurassic World ($208.8 million), not adjusted for inflation. Internationally, No Way Home is also shattering records despite omicron, which is prompting cinema closures and other restrictions in certain European markets. The movie grossed more than $180 million between Wednesday and Friday alone. No Way Home, reuniting director Jon Watts and star Tom Holland, is from Sony's Columbia Pictures, which controls the film rights to Spider-Man, and Disney's Marvel Studios, home to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Watts' film combines three generations of Spider-Man movies and includes previous villain actors Willem Dafoe (2002's Spider-Man), Alfred Molina (2004's Spider-Man 2) and Jamie Foxx (2014's The Amazing Spider-Man 2). It also stars Zendaya, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jacob Batalon, Marisa Tomei, Jon Favreau and Benedict Wong. Dec. 20, 8:15 a.m. Updated with Monday actuals. MCU – MARVEL STUDIOS Doctor Strange 2 Reshoots Include More MCU Cameos https://www.cbr.com/doctor-strange-2-reshoots-more-mcu-cameos/ https://view.email.hollywoodreporter.com/?qs=3c888441338aa39fc68a0073e84973eb4cce7bf3052d1fd33f803738208b397394364b060e878305e292a29609413dd678fb97533169aefa7a261ea80e9d1f8b16a8297c241f5a97 Flinty-eyed Heat Vision readers may recall that we previously wrote about significant reshoots on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Well, in an update on that story, we can tell you that the reshoots are wrapping this week. And we've also learned that part of the reshoots may have been spurred by the new Spider-Man movie and the Disney+ Loki series, both of which deal with the multiverse. It seems like Marvel was jazzed by the many actors crossing paths with each other in No Way Home and the playfulness of having alternate versions of characters appear onscreen in Loki. So they decided to have “more fun with the multiverse,” according to one source, and to include more cameos and character introductions in Doctor Strange 2. Will these cameos become MCU canon? Only time, and maybe Kang the Conqueror, will tell. ***************************** The reshoots for Doctor Strange 2 include even more cameos from across the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the introduction of new characters as well. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will include more cameos and introduce new characters to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as it undergoes reshoots. According to The Hollywood Reporter's "Heat Vision" newsletter, the reshoots for the Doctor Strange sequel will include even more cameos and character introductions than originally intended. While the characters themselves haven't been confirmed, sources report that the film will have "more fun with the multiverse" following the success of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness began "significant" reshoots in November, with Sam Raimi returning to direct the additional material along with writer Michael Waldron, who served as head writer for Marve's Loki Disney+ series. Raimi took over directorial duties from Scott Derrickson, who directed the first film and departed the sequel in September 2020 over creative differences. Star Benedict Cumberbatch, who portrays Dr. Stephen Strange in the MCU, previously stated that the reshoots will only improve the film. "I'm very excited. Sam Raimi's at the helm, so expect extraordinary things," Cumberbatch said. "And we're in the middle of making it even better. We've got some reshoots coming up in November and December." In a separate interview, Cumberbatch stated that the reshoots were largely a result of logistical issues and restrictions caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. "We're in the middle of reshoots and we're working incredibly hard to make a schedule work to realize the full potential of the film -- bits that we want to do better but also bits that were just impossible to do on the day because of logistics, COVID, etc," he said. "We were so delayed in production because of that. Luckily, not during production too much. Although everything is just a little slower." As for cameos, a new line of action figures for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness offered a first look at the possible introduction of Rintrah to the MCU, an alien minotaur that appeared in Marvel Comics as one of Doctor Strange's apprentices. It was also confirmed that Elizabeth Olsen will reprise her role as Wanda Maximoff/The Scarlet Witch, as the events of WandaVision will tie in directly to the sequel. Olsen wrapped filming on her Doctor Strange reshoots in September. Details surrounding the plot of Doctor Strange 2 remain scarce, though the potential for new characters is vast with the MCU's growing multiverse. Actor Xochitl Gomez is set to make her MCU debut in the film as well, as the Young Avenger America Chavez/Miss America. Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness | Official Teaser https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rt_UqUm38BI America Chavez Mordo Wong Wanda …..more to come… DISNEY+ Hawkeye directors explain how they handled the show's biggest MCU crossovers https://www.polygon.com/interviews/22840239/hawkeye-directors-interview-kingpin-daredevil Florence Pugh's Yelena makes a splash, and so does the show's other big known Marvel character Like all the Marvel Cinematic Universe TV shows so far, Hawkeye has prompted fan speculation and theories, particularly about how exactly the story would fit into existing Marvel canon, and where it might overly cross over by bringing in familiar characters. The MCU faithful were primed to expect the arrival of Natasha Romanoff's assassin sister Yelena (Florence Pugh), since Black Widow's post-credits scene outright set up a conflict between her and series lead Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) over her sister's death in Avengers: Endgame. And more recently, the show's audience started theorizing about the identity of a mysterious underworld boss, teased in recent episodes. Episode 5 of Hawkeye, “Ronin,” ends the speculation with a single cell-phone picture, confirming the identity of the boss who seems to be behind the story's main action. British director team Bert & Bertie, who helmed Hawkeye episodes 3, 4, and 5, recently spoke to Polygon about getting the chance to bring that character in. The image of Vincent D'Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, aka underworld crime lord Kingpin, at the end of “Ronin” has big implications for the MCU going forward, since D'Onofrio played the character in the Netflix series Daredevil. Bertie says she and her directorial partner didn't learn their episodes would be bringing Kingpin back until they were already in production. “That was as exciting to us as it was to the fans, knowing what everyone else would feel,” she says. “It's like, ‘Oh my goodness, these worlds are now able to meld, and there's this extra layer that can come into the the MCU that had previously been separate.'” His brief appearance seems to finally confirm that Netflix's Marvel shows — Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and the crossover miniseries The Defenders — are still canon to the current MCU. (In spite of what Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has said in the past.) That suggests Daredevil and Hawkeye take place in the same version of New York City. But Bertie says Marvel Studios didn't tell the directors to look back at the older series for visual inspiration or design consistency. “There was never any kind of requirement or need to meld Daredevil and Hawkeye in any way,” she says. As far as portraying Kingpin goes, Bert says they made their directorial choices around Kingpin's past reputation and presence. “I think you just respect the character, and where the character is in the universe,” she says. “So when Kingpin comes in, he's massive, you know? He's huge. As the story goes, he's later in a more difficult place, but he comes in as his big self, with his big hands. In that picture [at the end of “Ronin”], you see him in his iconic suit. So how to shoot him came from where the character is, rather than us trying to match our universe to anything in the past.” As far as whether the shows are meant to feel similar, Bert says they do have roughly the same aesthetic. “But we deal with the character story more. Rather than dealing with the the universe they come from, they step into ours.” Similarly, the duo didn't look back to Black Widow to see how to frame or design Yelena — they took cues from Pugh instead. “In terms of consistency of character, Florence had a lot to say about what Yelena might wear to her first proper meeting with [Hailee Steinfeld's] Kate Bishop as a human, rather than as an assassin character,” Bertie says. “So there's a thread of character that runs through.” She says that in setting up episode 5's awkward, extended sit-down between Kate and Yelena over macaroni and cheese, they mostly wanted to respect how different the characters are. “Obviously, this incredibly off-the-wall character that Yelena is was super fresh to the MCU,” Bertie says. “That was something we celebrated. We wanted to see how Kate — naive, wide-eyed, super-smart, fierce, badass in her own way, but learning this whole world — and this very dangerous character, come together. In terms of directing, Marvel are brilliant about encouraging directors to be themselves, to set up the kind of shots we needed to tell this weird yet intimate yet funny story, this emotional girls' night between two very kick-ass women, just being normal, and a bit insecure, and all of these things women in their 20s can be.” ‘Raya and the Last Dragon' Leads 2022 Annie Awards Feature Nominations What If…? “Ultron Won” Nominated for Best Editorial, Television and Media https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/annie-awards-raya-and-the-last-dragon-leads-2022-nominations-1235065364/ https://deadline.com/2021/12/annie-awards-nominations-2022-raya-and-the-last-dragon-encanto-luca-flee-1234899864/ Best Editorial – TV/ Media Amphibia Episode: True Colors Walt Disney Television Animation Jennifer Calbi , David Vasquez, Julie Anne Lau, Yoonah Yim, Andrew Sorcini Arlo the Alligator Boy Episode: Broadcast Special, Netflix Presents A Ryan Crego Film Steve Downs Love, Death + Robots Episode: Pop Squad, Blur Studio for Netflix Julian Clarke, Matt Mariska, Valerian Zamel, Brian Swanson, Ky Kenyon Tom and Jerry in New York Episode: Billboard Jumble, Warner Bros. After being teased in the penultimate episode of Season 1, Vincent D'Onofrio finally returned to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the finale of Hawkeye, and he shared a message with fans to mark the occasion. To celebrate the last episode of Hawkeye's first season, the show's Twitter account shared a number of videos from the stars. D'Onofrio's Kingpin, aka Wilson Fisk, was teased at the end of Episode 5, but the sixth episode sees him step out of the shadows and take on the heroes. And D'Onofrio thanked fans for their enthusiasm about his return to the character following the cancellation of Daredevil on Netflix. "Hello, everybody. Welcome to the season finale of Hawkeye. This is a great show. A lot of effort was put into it by Marvel, by the film crews, the producers, the writers, and all the actors," D'Onofrio said in his message. "So, I hope you enjoy it. And thank you for being so patient waiting all this time for my character. I so appreciate the warm welcome. So enjoy yourself. And Merry Christmas." The thread also features messages from Hailee Steinfeld (Kate Bishop), Jeremy Renner (Clint Barton), Fra Fee (Kazi), and Tracksuit Mafia actors Piotr Adamczyk (Tomas) and Carlos Navarro (Enrique), the latter of which sang a "bro"-filled rendition of a Christmas classic. D'Onofrio arrived to great acclaim as Fisk on the first season of Daredevil, adding new layers to the comic book villain. He'd continue to vex Matt Murdock during his show's three-season run, and fans have long been hoping to see the actor and character pop up in a film or new TV show. While the canon status of Marvel Netflix shows is unknown, Kingpin has officially arrived in the modern MCU. Of course, his fate in the finale is left a mystery, with Maya seeming to shoot him offscreen. But as the moment was inspired by a comic that saw Kingpin survive, and given how long fans have waited for the actor's return, it's safe to assume he won't be gone for long. NETFLIX DEFENDERS Jessica Henwick Discusses Colleen Wing's Possible Marvel Future https://www.superherohype.com/movies/509494-jessica-henwick-discusses-colleen-wings-possible-marvel-future It turns out the role she was up for was of Shang-Chi's sister Xialing, which ultimately went to relative unknown Meng'er Zhang. But had she taken such a major role, with clear spinoff potential, it would have definitely meant no more for Iron Fist‘s Colleen Wing. Marvel has double-cast some actors before, like Mahershala Ali and Gemma Chan, but in every instance, one of the characters was either minor or died. And Henwick didn't want Colleen Wing to go that way. “If I did [Shang-Chi], I would effectively be putting Colleen to bed,” she revealed. “It wasn't the main factor, but it definitely came up in conversation. I love Colleen. She changed my life. Of course, if I was given the opportunity to revisit her, I would, but I just don't know how likely that is…I think I would have heard by now if there were any plans with Colleen.” The Marvel shows on Netflix began as canon with the movies, then later became unofficial. However, Marvel Netflix characters coming back as new versions of themselves in the MCU seems to be a new trend. Vincent D'Onofrio just returned as Kingpin, and Kevin Feige recently talked up Charlie Cox's Daredevil. According to Henwick, though, those actors knew for quite a while. “Charlie knew about that opportunity years ago. He already knew it was happening,” she says. News: Some new and returning entertainment is coming to Disneyland in 2022. An expanded “Celebrate Gospel!” will debut in February at the Fantasyland Theater, and “Tale of the Lion King” will return in the spring, also to the Fantasyland Theater. The Main Street Electrical Parade will return to Main Street in time to celebrate its 50th anniversary in June. Fantasmic! and World of Color are also announced to return, with no firm time frame yet. Finally, Disneyland Forever fireworks will also be lighting up the sky once again in 2022. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2021/12/more-fan-favorite-entertainment-returns-to-disneyland-resort-in-2022-including-celebrate-gospel-and-tale-of-the-lion-king/ Nothing quite beats a food festival at Disneyland! Lunar New Year and Disney California Adventure Food and Wine Festivals are returning in 2022. The Lunar New Year celebration in 2022 is based on the Year of the Tiger, so Tigger will be joining the festivities. Raya, from Raya and the Last Dragon will make her debut at Disneyland for the celebration as well. The Lunar New Year runs January 21st through February 13th. Starting March 4th and running through April 26th, the Food and Wine Festival will return. Sip and Savor passes will be offered for both celebrations. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2021/12/fan-favorite-limited-time-festivals-return-to-the-disneyland-resort-in-2022-lunar-new-year-and-disney-california-adventure-food-wine-festival/ As we have been covering for a few weeks now, Jessica Rabbit is taking over Roger Rabbit's Car Toon Spin. Last week, Jessica Rabbit, dressed in her best detective outfit, made her appearance in the attraction. A new figure was placed next to the car trunk that she used to be inside of, then where she held the sledgehammer, she has been changed over to the new look, and finally, her silhouette has been updated in the queue to reflect the new look. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2021/12/11/photos-new-detective-jessica-rabbit-animatronic-debuts-at-disneyland/ and https://www.micechat.com/309922-roger-rabbit-cover-up-at-disneyland-jessicas-new-starring-role/ The Disability Access Service, better known as “DAS” has been improved! Starting with visits on December 20th, guests who utilize the service can pre-register for the service virtually with a Cast Member. To do this, guests use a live video chat feature as early as 30 days prior to their visit, but no less than 2 days before arrival. Guests can then book up to two one-hour return windows for select experiences, per day in advance. In the future, Disney says that guests enrolled in the system will be able to same-day self-select an attraction, without having to visit with guest relations. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2021/12/07/guests-can-now-virtually-pre-register-for-disneylands-disability-access-service/ It was great to be able to ride it's a small world on it's first day of operation for the holiday season, but it took a lot of work to get it open! The Disney Parks Blog documented the process. The underground maintenance room of the attraction, known as “the pit” flooded on November 10th, while refilling was underway. Almost all of the ride control machinery is in the pit, and was submerged in at least 7 feet of water. Twenty different teams sprung into action to get the attraction working again. They set a timeline of 4 weeks to get it operational again. More than 200,000 gallons of water needed to be pumped out of the pit before teams could even begin to determine the damage. Teams worked to determine what could be cleaned and salvaged, and what needed to be replaced. Many of the spare parts which they could use were stored in the same pit. The team reached out to small world attractions around the world to get the needed parts. They met the goal of under 4 weeks and reopened the attraction on December 6th. The timeline was expected to be several months under normal conditions. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2021/12/how-disneyland-resort-cast-rallied-to-open-its-a-small-world-holiday/ We saw first hand how the launch of the Genie system in Disneyland went last week. The first hour or so worked well as we were able to buy our Genie+ service, and make a couple of Lightning Lane reservations for Guardians and Midway Mania. We were even able to mobile order some food and have a lot of PhotoPass photos taken. About an hour into the day, the entire system went mostly unresponsive. The free Genie service to plan the day only displayed an error, and reservations for Lightning Lane attractions could not be made. Even the Lightning Lane+ pay-per-attraction options were not available. However, around 5pm, the system seemed to come back online and continued to work for us perfectly until the end of the night. Even the couple hours the next morning, the free portion of the service seemed to be working well. – https://www.micechat.com/309918-disneyland-update-genie-fail-entertainment-holiday/ If, like us, you were in the parks on December 10th for the launch of Genie+, and you used the service, you may have received an email from Disneyland. The email states that they are “working to provide recovery” for the launch. Not exactly sure what that means at this time, but it is possible that Disney will either refund guests, or provide some other perk for the inconvenience. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2021/12/13/select-disneyland-genie-users-to-be-provided-recovery/ A new Star Wars photo opportunity has come to Downtown Disney. Next to the Star Wars Trading Post, there are two new displays for The Book of Boba Fett, the new Disney+ show coming later this month. The first is a throne that Boba can be seen sitting on in the trailer for the new show. The second is a sand crawler, which fans will know from the original movies and the Mandalorian. – https://www.micechat.com/309918-disneyland-update-genie-fail-entertainment-holiday/ A strange construction project that drew a lot of attention has finally been completed. The right side of the walkway to ToonTown has finally come out from behind construction walls and has been revealed to be an ADA access ramp. Theories had been talked about like a new Lightning Lane queue, or other odd options, but this is just an ADA ramp for people needing the less bumpy path and slighly less grade going to ToonTown. – https://www.micechat.com/309918-disneyland-update-genie-fail-entertainment-holiday/ It is going to be easier to spot former Disneyland, and other Disney Parks Ambassadors in the future. New gold Disney Ambassador Alumni name tags have been created that take their inspiration from Walt Disney's Disneyland employee #1 badge. The new name tags were presented to the current alumni at a recent alumni gathering. So, next time you are in the parks, be on the lookout for a gold name tag to see if you are in the presence of a former Disneyland Ambassador. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2021/12/new-alumni-name-tag-for-disney-ambassadors/ It has been a little while since guest's paper parks have been able to grow – until now. Last week, Disneyland hosted a Galaxy of Wishes fundraising event in Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge. The money raised from this event will help the Make a Wish Foundation be able to grant more wishes for children with critical illnesses. Disneyland was part of the first wish back in 1980. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2021/12/galaxy-of-wishes-disneyland-resort-and-make-a-wish-join-forces-to-create-more-magic/ We wanted to have the final update on the Cast Member union negotiations and voting that took place a couple of weeks ago. This episode and the next will look closely at the campaigns of Sri Krishna Devaraya against the Orissa Gajapati's scion, Prataparudra Deva and their intense personal rivalry that added fuel to the already simmering fire between these two Hindu powers. Not many people realize that the aftermath of this long simmering war between these two great powers, was much more dramatic and in a way anticlimactic than what it is usually made out to be. The decline in the power of Orissan Gajapatis and the break up of it's empire, practically begins with the ascension of Prataparudra to the throne and the rise of Sri Krishna Devaraya.

Has someone at Disney been listening to us? Seems that way, since RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON gives us a lot of what we've been wanting from modern Disney. An original story instead of a sequel or a remake? Check. A "let's get a team together" structure filled with interesting and fun characters? Check. A con artist baby who can do martial arts? You better believe that's a check. This movie isn't perfect, but it's still a whole lot of fun.
Danica, Liza, and Liz discuss Raya and the Last Dragon, and the efforts by Disney to create worlds without patriarchy. Oh! And there's one NSFLE (not safe for little ears) comment, unless, of course, you're one of our kids and then all bets are off. Music: Highballers by Gyom. License through PremiumBeat.
Alright, the next win streak starts...now! They might make us look “better,” but they don't always make us feel better about who we are and what we look like. In this episode of This Teenage Life, we're hearing people's perspectives and experiences with photo filters — like the ones we use (or choose not to use) on Instagram, Snapchat and Tik Tok. Thanks to Raya, Sophia, Jayden, and Tori for inspiring this episode.
On today's show Greg and Ed address a pretty simple question: When you see Bangkok in movies and in series, are you actually seeing an accurate portrayal of the way Bangkok REALLY is? The guys decide that the short answer is probably not (certainly not in Thai lakorn), but there are some interesting exceptions. For example, even big-budget movies such as “Hangover 2” and “Raya and the Last Dragon” get many details right, such as Fanta served in a plastic bag or ‘toilet paper' (to Westerners) used as napkins on the dinner table. Also, some shows (especially Western ones) get some facts correct but over-emphasize them. Yes, Thailand does have elephants, prostitutes, and transexuals - but not EVERY story needs to include them. Greg then raises the elephant (heh heh, get it? we're in Thailand) in the room: foreign productions in Thailand are censored before they are made, and Thai productions are censored after they are made. So, in general, no direct showing of corruption among the monkhood, police or army, government officials, and certainly no mention of the monarchy. Because of these strict guard rails, it's almost impossible to accurately portray Thai society from within the country. Ed then laments the lack of a ‘realist' cinema in Thailand, akin to the gritty dramas of the Hollywood of the 70s. Where are the Godfathers, Serpicos, and Taxi Drivers of Thai cinema? No one knows the answer to that question but both guys bring up various Thai movies and series that have flirted with realism in one way or another, including ‘The Serpent,' ‘Hormones,' ‘Changeland,' ‘Girl From Nowhere,' and, recently, ‘Bangkok Breaking.' Hope springs eternal. Maybe. We guess. We hope. Don't forget that Patrons get the ad-free version of the show as well as swag and other perks. And we'll keep our Facebook, Twitter, and LINE accounts active so you can send us comments, questions, or whatever you want to share.
Episode 8 starts out with an apology for its delay but these streets wait for no one and Shannon is really in the throws of them. Ehhhh. Shannon has yet another Raya story but this one was less interested in her and more into her medical record. Which hit show's leading man did she cross paths with in New York? How to say F U to a man who belittles your career and which red flags they've experienced and fallen for in the past. All of this and more explained in "The Streets Don't Wait"
