It's official. Two years in a row makes it a tradition. The Reading Culture Yearbook is here. It's the year end celebratory episode where we look back and highlight some of our favorite moments in the form of awarding superlatives. Or, as we dubbed them last year and seemingly forgot, “The Readies”.This year's edition features awards such as “Best [Not] Meet Cute”, the “Owning It Award”, the “Merriam-Webster Award” (alternatively titled “most likely to know more words than Merriam-Webster”), and “The Teen Whisperer Award”.And just like last year, we promise to make you laugh, and potentially cry depending on how quickly you reach for the tissues.***Connect with Jordan and The Reading Culture @thereadingculturepod and subscribe to our newsletter at thereadingculturepod.com/newsletter. Show ChaptersChapter 1 - Best Alter EgoChapter 2 - The Teen Whisperer AwardChapter 3 - Full Circle Moment Chapter 4 - Best [Not] Meet CuteChapter 5 - Citizen of the World AwardChapter 6 - Odd Couple AwardChapter 7 - The All In AwardChapter 8 - Most Moving Dream Chapter 9 - Best Life Lesson From LiteratureChapter 10 - Owning It Award Chapter 11 - Most Likely to Rewrite the Stars Chapter 12 - Merriam-Webster AwardChapter 13 - Best Dinner Party GameLinksThe Reading CultureThe Reading Culture Newsletter SignupFollow The Reading Culture on Instagram (for giveaways and bonus content)Beanstack resources to build your community's reading cultureJordan Lloyd BookeyHost: Jordan Lloyd BookeyProducer: Jackie Lamport and Lower Street MediaScript Editors: Josia Lamberto-Egan, Jackie Lamport, Jordan Lloyd Bookey

"I'm not a person that's like, let's throw out the classics. It's, let's move forward. Let's disrupt the canon. Some of these universal themes, some of these ingredients that we love, how do I remix them into a new stew?” - Dhonielle ClaytonWhat is life without a little magic? Fantasy gives us the space to break free from the confines that reality often brings and the freedom to dream the typically unimaginable. But with all its magic and wonder, the fantasy genre doesn't always reflect the diversity of its real-life readers' stories. Dhonielle Clayton, a literary mover and shaker, is dedicated to changing that narrative, filling in the gaps to ensure that all kids see a reflection of themselves in these wondrous worlds.Dhonielle is an acclaimed author known for her works, including "The Belles" series, "The Conjurverse" series, and "Shattered Midnight." Born and raised in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., Dhonielle spent much of her childhood hiding beneath her grandmother's dining table with a stack of books. As an English teacher at a ballet academy, Clayton rediscovered her passion for children's and young adult literature. To ground herself in the canon, she pursued her Masters in Children's Literature from Hollins University before receiving her MFA in Writing for Children at the New School. She is a former middle school librarian, where she pestered children to read and curated a diverse collection. An avid traveler, Dhonielle's lived in several foreign countries, but she's now settled in Harlem, where you'll find her writing late into the night, lurking in libraries, and hunting for the best slice of New York pizza. She is the COO of We Need Diverse Books and the co-founder of Cake Literary. The co-author of the dance dramas Tiny Pretty Things and Shiny Broken Pieces, as well as the upcoming Rumor Game, Dhonielle is the author of the New York Times bestselling YA fantasy series The Belles.  In our next episode, we will review  Dhonielle book Tiny Pretty Things

Welcome to Prophecy Radio, a Percy Jackson podcast dedicated to all of Rick Riordan's past, present, and future projects! Co-hosts Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz discuss the latest news in the Percy Jackson/Rick Riordan Presents fandom, then jump into Tiger Honor, the sequel to Yoon Ha Lee's first book the in Thousand Worlds series, Dragon Pearl, as well as analyze chapters 9 and 10 of Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters. New episodes of Prophecy Radio will air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:00:53) Karen owns up to her mistakes. Happy birthday, Daniel José Older! Go pre-order Ballad and Dagger. J.C. Cervantes has seen the final cover for The Lords of Night. Rick posted a blog on January 22. First and foremost, go pre-order Aru Shah and the Nectar of Immortality, which comes out on April 5! Pre-ordering books really helps authors (and it might help us, too)! City of the Plague God is now in paperback. Rick recommends The Marvellers by Dhonielle Clayton and The Door of No Return by Kwame Alexander. Karen is also throwing Shattered Midnight into the ring, as it's also by Dhonielle Clayton. We get another lovely Solangelo book update! Also, Kristen totally gets how awesome and interesting LEGOs can be. Be sure to enter our Tiger Honor giveaway! Tiger Honor by Yoon Ha Lee (00:20:59) Read Karen's Tiger Honor book review. What are our general thoughts on Tiger Honor compared to Dragon Pearl? Sebin is a very different main character from Min. Did we like them? Are YOU a rule follower, or do you like to cause trouble like Min? A huge theme of this book is duty and loyalty, both to family and the Space Forces. The Juhwang tiger clan is intense. Like, really intense. Did we like anyone from the tiger clan?? It was nice to see Min and Jun again! Let's meet the new side characters. Which were our favorites? Okay, it's time to talk about Captain Hwan. Have our thoughts changed on him since we last saw him in Dragon Pearl? He's brought in some reinforcements. How did YOU picture Shield, Sena's sapsali? Is there room for more books in the Thousand World series? Chapter Reviews (01:00:15) It's time to talk about Sea of Monsters chapter 9. Okay, is it cool or creepy that Tyson can imitate voices? Do we think Thalia would've been on Luke's side? We totally see where Luke is coming from, but he's going about it the wrong way. Who are Luke's friends at Camp Half-Blood? Is Luke angrier at his dad or at the other gods? We kind of feel bad for Hermes! Tyson is the true MVP. Are you ready for chapter 10? Thank the gods (or one god in particular) for that thermos! But there's a bigger question here—how exactly do Iris messages work? You'll never have to be afraid if you're lost at sea with Percy Jackson! It makes a lot of sense that chain stores are evil. We get a little confused, but Percy has definitely never seen a hydra before. At least book Percy is smarter than movie Percy. Thank goodness for…Clarisse? We love that Percy recognized his own jealousy. You can take the demigod out of the city, but you can't take the city out of the demigod. Who doesn't love a good Monster Donut? Thanks for listening, and be sure to tune in next time for episode 17, where we'll discuss “The Diary of Luke Castellan” from The Demigod Diaries. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Each episode, our Prophecy Radio hosts and their guests will keep you up to date on the latest information coming out of Camp Half-Blood, including upcoming books and adaptation news, discuss a topic of choice, and do a chapter by chapter reread of the Percy Jackson series. This week, Zoraida Córdova (aka Zoey Castille) joins us to talk about fantasy romance and why it is so hard to find it in the romance pool. We talk about speculative fiction, high fantasy, low fantasy, urban fantasy, contemporary fantasy, paranormal romance and more, all while trying to figure out just what makes something fantasy and not paranormal (we think we've cracked the code). We also talk world building, about maps, and about merman junk. Our next read along is Kylie Scott's Lead, one of our longtime favorites. Get it at Amazon, Apple Books, B&N, Kobo, or Bookshop.org! Get the others in the series, too, while you're at it, because you'll probably want to read the whole thing. Thank you, as always, for listening! Please follow us on your favorite podcasting app, and if you are up for leaving a rating or review there, we would be very grateful! Show NotesWelcome Zoraida Córdova! Zoraida writes MG, YA, and adult speculative fiction, and also romance under the name Zoey Castile. Puerto Rico is a US territory and residents of the island are American citizens. Why Moscow Mules are served in copper mugs.We love Norma Perez-Hernandez who is an amazing, exuberant editor at Kensington, and if you don't follow her on Twitter she should. Norma also was on the 2020 Publisher's Weekly Star Watch List. Zoraida's book The Vicious Deep answers the age-old question of “where does it go,” a similar answer is in Guillermo del Toro's movie The Shape of Water. Speculative fiction asks the question “what if” and is the big umbrella category for science fiction, fantasy, urban fantasy (now Black authors in particular suggest we rename this contemporary fantasy), and paranormal. Reading strategies are for everyone: We love maps in fantasy, so why not in contemporary fiction?Victoria Avyeard was on Sarah Enni's First Draft podcast talking about world building. The Hero's Journey, or maybe the heroine's journey. NK Jemisin's lecture about the cultural iceberg shows writers how to build a world that goes beyond what's on the surface. An interesting thread from a YA librarian, and another from author Elizabeth May, about why and how romance plots in SFF are pushed into YA. Zoraida hosts a writing podcast with Dhonielle Clayton called Deadline City.Relevant music perormed by: Twin Temple, Marike van Dijk + Katell Keineg, King Missile, Dr. Octagon, and Led Zeppelin.
