Tyler Lafferty from Third Street Aleworks and Steve Doty from Shady Oak Barrel House are our two guests on Brew Ha Ha today with Herlinda Heras and Harry Duke sitting in for Steve Jaxon. The FeBREWary celebration is going on in Santa Rosa, sponsored by Visit Santa Rosa. Go to the website for information about how to participate in the 2022 Beer Passport. (SF Beer Week is also going on.) There are 14 craft brewers in the program this year. You pick up your passport at Wilibee's and if you get 11 stamps, including three free ones, you can win a colorful medallion. There are not just Santa Rosa breweries in the Beer Passport program. Bear Republic and Old Caz in Rhonert Park and also Seismic in the Barlow in Sebastopol are also among the participating breweries. Brew Ha Ha is sponsored by the Santa Rosa branch of Yoga Six located in Coddingtown Center. Third Street Aleworks Tyler has been at Third Street Aleworks for 13 years, while other businesses in the neighborhood have come and gone. They opened 26 years ago this March. They got new owners a couple of years ago in the Spring 2019. He is the fourth brewmaster they have had. The last two years have been a challenge. They used to sell 90% of their beer over their own bar, now 80% goes out in cans and the rest in kegs to different places. It was hard to get food delivered so they partnered with some of their neighbors to deliver local produce. They did it until they were able to open indoor dining again. They have a new beer called PBR People's Beer of Rosa. Blanca Molina, a local artist, designed its label. Third St. Ale Works supplied food to the vaccination clinic that Herlinda set up with her friends, every Thursday. Tyler is proud that the owners care about supporting the community in these ways. Their menu is not as extensive as it once was, since they have had to become more agile, as a lot of other business have. They have done some remodelling. They also have “Tightwad Tuesday” with specially priced beers and bratwursts and a resident food truck, Tacos Tijuana, as well as others which are rotating on different days. Brew Ha Ha is sponsored by Russian River Brewing Co. Shady Oak Barrel House Harry Duke has known Steve Doty since before the pub was opened. 420 1st St. in Santa Rosa. Shady Oak Barrel House was a home brew project that grew into a business. He started just making sours in barrels and needed to expand to start an actual tap room. They also have Cosmo the brewery cat. They adopted him after one of the fires. Cats are good around a brewery to protected the grain from rats and mice. Cosmo was catnapped but later was returned. Shady Oak Barrel House started with a focus on barrel aging and spontaneous and wild fermentation. Since they opened the taproom they also make other kinds, like a triple IPA that he brought. The Shady Oak Barrel House also has an arcade with pinball and old 80s-era video arcade games. They are also a dog friendly location. They have a spacious location that used to be an automobile dealership. The King Street Giants, formerly known as Dixie Giants, for Mardi Gras. They will also have the food vendor Bayou on the Bay whose chef comes from Louisiana and makes all authentic recipes from down there. They also have trivia night every Thursday. Finally, these two breweries have produced a collaboration brew. Back in 2018, they brewed a Baltic Porter with a large amount of rye in it. They decided to age it in rye whiskey barrels. Due to the pandemic it has been in barrels for two years. It was a 7.5% multi-dark lager but now it is up to 10% alcohol. It has many layers of flavors. They are releasing it tomorrow.
Craft Brew News – 11/29/19(Stories Courtesy of Brewbound – www.brewbound.com)Hopworks Urban Brewery Opens Mug Club to Members of Closed Portland Breweries’ ClubsAfter a spate of craft breweries and cideries closing in the Portland, Oregon, Hopworks Urban Brewery announced it will extend its mug club membership to members of similar clubs at any now-closed businesses. The craft brewery also invited former workers to apply at its taprooms.Hopworks founder Christian Ettinger said in a press release “When we heard about the recent closures of Portland institutions, we felt a void in the community,” “A lot of livelihoods and social occasions are affected by these closings, and we want to help, whether it’s honoring closed establishments’ mug clubs or helping people who have lost their jobs get back on their feet.”Former employees of closed businesses are invited to apply for jobs at Hopworks’ locations in Portland and Vancouver, Washington. The offer is valid through December 31 and provides consumers with 21 oz. pours for the cost of 16 oz. pours and 10% off merchandise and growler fills. In the past year, Portland has seen the following businesses close: Cider Riot, Coalition Brewing, Rock Bottom Brewery & Restaurant, Lompoc, Bridgeport and Burnside. Widmer Brothers, Portland Brewing and Alameda closed taproom locations, though their brands continue.Asahi Bets Big on BeerAsahi Group Holdings has doubled down on acquisitions of breweries outside its home market of Japan.CEO Akiyoshi Koji told reporters that his goal is for Asahi to lead the premium beer segment in every market it’s in, according to a report on Yahoo Finance. Koji helped propel his company to growth through a blockbuster $11 billion deal in July to acquire Melbourne, Australia’s Carlton & United Breweries from Anheuser-Busch. Under Koji, Asahi has spent more than $20 billion making other acquisitions across the globe. These moves are antithetical compared to how other global brewers are facing beer’s slowdown; many, such as Constellation Brands, are expanding into industries like cannabis or launching different beverage products like hard seltzers.Minnesota Remains Last State for 3.2 BeerMinnesota remains the last state in the nation to limit beer sales at grocery and convenience stores to beer with an alcohol by weight (ABW) of 3.2% or lower, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.Earlier this month, Utah loosened its laws to permit sales of beer that’s 4% ABW (about 5% alcohol by volume), leaving Minnesota as the last 3.2 beer state.Shady Oak Barrel House Under Fire for Derogatory PG&E Beer NameSanta Rosa, California-based brewpub Shady Oak Barrel House was overwhelmed with negative online reviews and phone calls from consumers after it named a beer “Fuck PG&E” to disparage executives of Pacific Gas & Electric, the utility company whose lines have allegedly sparked wildfires in California over the past several years.Negative reviews poured in from public utility employees and their supporters from across the country who took umbrage with the name. Shady Oak Barrel House posted an apology letter to its Facebook page last week, explaining the intent behind the name.“The name was not intended to go after honest hard-working people that have been and still currently are helping our community,” the post said. “It is not to undercut or attack those that have been away from their families in order to serve others in times of recent disasters. The name doesn’t suggest anything remotely like this; however, some people chose to read it this way.”To combat the deluge of one-star ratings, Shady Oak Barrel House has offered to discount beer purchases by $1 for any customers who leave “an honest Yelp, Google or Facebook review.”PG&E was found to be at fault by Cal Fire for 2018’s Camp Fire, which killed 85 people and destroyed nearly 20,000 structures, and is facing trial for its role in the 2017 Stubbs Fire, and is being questioned about last month’s Kincaid Fire, according to SFGate.Craft Beer Storm Website: www.craftbeerstorm.com If your Company, Hotel or Restaurant wants to book a CraftBeer Weekend or Craft Beer Evening for your guests or employees send an email to Michael@craftbeerstorm.com Linked In: https://www.linkedin.com/in/craft-beer-storm-podcast-30776075/Subscribe to Craft Beer Storm Podcast iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/craft-beer-storm/id1438117278?mt=2Support ACS In NYC MarathonI ran the NYC Marathon through the American Cancer Society and I am aiming to raise $32,000 ($3,200 Minimum X 10X) - please follow link below to donate what you can - $25, $50, $30K! - Onward... - Here is link –http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?fr_id=94035&pg=personal&px=49477898&fbclid=IwAR2mBEvhF1wMA_BbHPhkavichNSFrE9Y9gi2RVZzfQ_4Da5Sht7gvH9rY_k*** A Top 20 Podcast in Food on iTunes ***Michael Potorti is the Host of Craft Beer Storm and Founder/Brewer at Beara Brewing Co. in Portsmouth, NH*** Interested in starting your own brewery? Steve Doty from Shady Oak Barrel House is our main guest today on Brew Ha Ha with Steve Jaxon and Mark Carpenter. Their website proclaims “Sour and Wild Artisinal Ales.” Bob Brewer, the former Anchor Brewing sales guy, is also in. Mark has known Bob for a long time, even before he worked at the brewery. Mark tells about how at Anchor, they were having trouble selling beer in New York. Fritz asked him and Bob to go to New York City and went from bar to bar making relationships. He says it is a huge accident that with a name like Brewer, he got into the beer business. Once when he worked for the Renaissance Faire, they asked him to put the beer concession booths together. He learned a lot about beer and met Fritz Maytag, who was personally delivering Anchor Steam beer. This was his transition into beer, when a beer distributor he had worked with offered him a job. Later, Mark offered Bob a job at Anchor. Bob was good at solving problems with the draft systems in bars, where they were serving Anchor beers. Mark thinks that the level of carbonation is lower now, which makes the beer easier to pour from the draft system. He also heard a brewer at the old Olympia brewery say that you could hide a lot of defects with extra carbonation. They are tasting some cans of Anchor Steam. The big cans are a new addition. They hold 19.2 fluid ounces. Mark says that the bars in New York at the time were stuck in their ways and they didn't want to charge more for better beer, but Mark got them to do it. After the break, Steve introduces Steve Doty from Shady Oak Barrel House. He just opened his taproom on 420 First Street. Steve asks him how he came to be a beer guy. He was a lab tech in the wine business but he doesn't drink wine. He found that craft beer was all about choices, which he says is ironic with the popularity of IPA. He makes sour beer, besides his IPA. All his beer is artisinal. He was named best new brewery in California in 2015 (or maybe 2016). Now his business is growing. They are tasting an IPA from Shady Oak Barrel House that Steve really likes. Steve asks why Anchor Steam beer is so popular. Bob says it's because it's so well made. He tells how Fritz Maytag introduced product consistency and hospital-level cleanliness, that make a unique high quality product. The term Steam for beer was a nickname given to the beer when early California brewers were making lager beer, but they didn't have refrigeration. So it went to the bars highly carbonated and it produced a lot of foam. Someone noticed and compared the airy beer to tapping a tank of steam. As they pour some Apricot Sour, Steve Doty describes why it didn't make sense for him to have an actual brew house. So he contracts with other brewers. He works a lot with Hen House. Mark explains that he buys the first stage of production from the brewer, they make it up to where he adds his flavors and blends. Most of his barrels are used French oak wine barrels. But he also has some gin barrels and port barrels. They all add their own flavors. Bob is a fan of sour beers, which used to be only produced in Belgium. They were hard to find until some locals started making them. Even if he likes sour beers, not all of them are good, some are not sour enough. The first domestically produced sour beer that he ever tasted was from Russian River Brewing Co. Many brewers are redefining the style, says Steve Doty. They taste an apricot-flavored sour beer that Herlinda Heras says tastes like a good Turkish dried apricot. Herlinda asks how they add fruit. For example, he gets grapes from Sonoma County and tries to use whole fruit. The beer has to be done and ready to go, but only then can have fruit added. He adds about 2 pounds of fruit for a gallon of beer. The fruit makes a new fermentation, and adds the flavor from the skins, pits, etc. Steve asks Bob to describe the Dickens Fair, which runs from Nov. 17 through Dec. 23 at the Cow Palace in San Francisco.

We've done Brewing on the Cheap a few times now, but not in a long time. On this episode of The Session, we invite Chris Graham from MoreBeer! back into the studio to catch us up on all the new ways we can build a basic homebrew system on the cheap. It seems the homebrew world has exploded in recent years, bringing an influx of great equipment at a reasonable price - something unheard of 10 years ago. Then, on the other side of the equipment coin, Chris takes us through the price-is-no-object equipment we can buy once we all hit the lotto. In the middle there we chat with Natalie and Vinnie Cilurzo from Russian River Brewing Company about their Sonoma Pride foundation, and Steve Doty from Shady Oak Barrel House about how those two companies are raising money to help their community rebuild from the devastating wildfires we are experiencing here in NorCal.
