In the world of beer, there are a number of real positives when it comes to working for, or running, a brewery.Creating something that people enjoy, savour and value is a goal in any artistic venture. And in ownership, so is the ability to provide employment, development and satisfaction to your team. Another purpose for many businesses is the ability to affect a change. Breweries are often the beating heart of local communities. They can offer a place to frequent, to socialise and where possible, also have a positive impact on the local economy they form part of.In the case of Russian River Brewing Company, they do just that. And with the release of the modern phenomenon that is Pliny The Younger, their annual sought-after Triple IPA, on the horizon, what better time to catch up with co-founder Vinnie Cilurzo who, along with his business partner and wife Natalie, is the co-founder of the California business. In this episode he shares his observations on the changing brewing landscape, the importance of community and his love of working with different ingredients. We also talked about the importance of maintaining a strong identity, integrity and, in an age of countless beer styles, why Russian River will continue doing what it does best - and that's "staying in its lane" making the beers people love. While Garrett Oliver of Brooklyn Brewery (https://brooklynbrewery.com) and Vinnie Cilurzo of Russian River (https://www.russianriverbrewing.com) need little introduction, the grain they've grown fond of brewing with—an African millet grain named fonio—may be unfamiliar to many brewers. In this episode, the two legends of brewing discuss the background of the grain and how and why they've used it in a series of new beers, produced for the Brewing for Impact (https://brooklynbrewery.com/news/brewing-for-impact-russian-river/) project. Along the way, Oliver and Cilurzo touch on: the limiting impact of our western industrialized food system the history and nature of fonio grain farming and climate benefits of fonio using fonio as a brewing component at various percentages fonio's unusual amino acid-like bitterness the impact on FAN in finished beer and its implications for potential stability and longevity a basic step mash regimen for Belgian pale with fonio the sauvignon blanc-like flavors that fonio can produce nearly clear beer made from 100% fonio And more. Nearly a quarter century ago, veteran brewer Vinnie Cilurzo brewed a one-off double IPA at Russian River Brewing for a local festival. It would become a regular, bearing the somewhat obscure name of a Roman naturalist—Pliny the Elder. Pliny pretty soon became a cult phenomenon and ultimately the brewery's calling card. But what makes it special—what makes it a classic—is how Vinnie anticipated the future of hoppy American ales and brewed the first truly modern IPA all those years ago. PHOTO: Russian River Brewing

The Craft Brewers Conference is an annual event that brings brewers from around the world into a selected city for a few days of education, equipment buying, and camaraderie. Brewers have also been using the occasion to get together in advance to create and then release collaboration beers. One of the most ambitious – at least from what I've experienced in recent years – will be released on May 1 by Embrace the Funk, the wild and wooded side of Yazoo Brewing. Brandon Jones, the brewer behind ETF called his friends – Vinnie Cilurzo of Russian River, Jason Perkins of Allagash, Jeffrey Stuffings of Jester King and Khristopher Johnson of Green Bench Brewing and they all agreed to lend their time, talent, and inspiration to the beer. Then Jones got Jeff Mello of Bootleg Biology involved on the yeast side and Matt Albrecht of River Drive Cooperage to sort out the wood. Everyone – minus Jason Perkins of Allagash – was able to jump into the zoom studios earlier this month to talk about the beer, how it all came together, and the spirt of collaboration among brewers and in the beer industry. Tyler Laverty, Vinnie Cilurzo and Brian Hunt are all guests today on Brew Ha Ha with Harry Duke and Herlinda Heras. Tyler Laverty is brewmaster at Third Street Aleworks. Vinnie Cilurzo is brewmaster and a co-founder of Russian River Brewing Company. Brian Hunt is the founder, co-owner and brewmaster at Moonlight Brewing Company. This is a powerful bunch of beer guys AND they all just won medals at the Great American Beer Festival. They can't resist joking about playing fast and loose with the “official” brew descriptions of the BJCP, which are online here. Listen to these beer heavyweights, check out the BJCP descriptions they're referencing, taste some of the beer, and then see what you think. That's the scientific method as applied to this show. This kind of audience involvement shows the power of radio and beer together. Taste and see. And tell your friends! Visit our sponsor Victory House online for their latest viewing and menu options. Brian Hunt describes the Moonlight beer called Wee Nibble that won a medal. His brewmaster Zach Greenwood wanted to make a Petit Saison which ended up winning. Vinnie Cilurzo describes the beer that won a medal for Russian River Brewing Co. called Intinction. Tyler Laverty describes the challenging business environment and the recent changes at Third Street Aleworks. They have had to close the restaurant and now they have popups providing food. Bayou On The Bay has taken up residency and he brought a Cajun Birria style taco, and the Cajun Cali Burrito, from their menu. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more info.
Once a week just isn't enough! Enjoy new Tuesday episodes of the Craft Beer & Brewing podcast every other week, with different formats like this round table discussion as well as episodes where you get to ask the questions of our brewer guests! This round table discussion with Russian River, Cantillon, and Allagash kicks off the new series. Recorded in the coolship room at Russian River the morning of their Wild Friendship Blend event, the conversation between Rob Tod and Jason Perkins of Allagash, Jean and Florian Van Roy of Cantillon, and Natalie and Vinnie Cilurzo of Russian River explores both bigger picture questions about spontaneous brewing, and particular implementations and adaptations employed by the American breweries in making compelling beers using the traditional process. Topics include: - Stories from the earliest days of American spontaneous brewing - Sensory differences between spontaneous beer made at Allagash, Russian River, and Cantillon - The challenging in building a blend with "characterful" base beers - Creating environments that support better spontaneous brewing results - Tuning coolship rooms for more consistent and reliable production - The dynamics of spontaneous fermentation through a season - Reducing opportunities for failure - The various (and very different) ways each brewery ages and uses hops - Connecting spontaneous beer to consumers through experience And more. This episode is brought to you by: Accubrew (https://accubrew.io): AccuBrew is a revolutionary fermentation analysis tool unlike anything else on the market, giving brewers unprecedented insight into the fermentation process. This week I am joined by very special guest co-owner and brewer of Russian River Brewing Co. Vinnie Cilurzo. Vinnie kindly took some time in the brewery to have a chat about all things Russian River and how things have been for them in recent months. Vinnie shares his background and how he came to first work at Russian River before taking over the business and how it has grown since he first joined as brewer. We also have a look at some of the other beers in their portfolio beyond Pliny the Elder including Blind Pig, STS Pils, Happy Hops and Mind Circus. We also finish by talking about their upcoming annual release of Pliny the Younger, their triple version of their renowned double IPA, Pliny the Elder. Huge thanks to Vinnie for agreeing to be on the show and giving up his time to have a chat to me and I can't wait to hopefully visit and meet him in person one day!
Fresh Hops are front and center today on Brew Ha Ha with Steve Jaxon and Mark Carpenter, as we welcome Vinnie and Natalie Cilurzo from Russian River Brewing Company. Vinnie and Natalie are the co-owners of Russian River Brewing Co. and they have brought a pack of fresh hops into the studio today. Now is a busy time, the hops are being harvested and there are special hoppy beers being made and enjoyed. The Russian River Brewing Co. Winds0r location and the Santa Rosa pub are both open. They have been using the parklette on 4th Street, which was done to allow social distancing for Covid precautions, and while they won't be there forever, they are using it and enjoying it for as long as possible. They also have some longer term construction plans to expand in Santa Rosa. Vinnie says that RRBC has brought in a lot of fruit lately, peaches and grape pumice, Syrah and Sauvignon Blanc, which they use in various fruity beers with some sour tartness. They have one called Hop Time, which is on tap and in cans in their brew pubs only. It's the only way to get it. They made a double batch in Santa Rosa. It uses wet hops so it is a bulky job, using locally grown hops from the Crane ranch. RRBC has a sour beer club, only for fans of that style, no hoppy beers. "Next year, we will make Hop Time with barley that Ron and Erica Crane have grown, also. So that will make it a complete local beer," says Vinnie.
¡Salud beer compas & beer sisters!
In the case of an IPA, higher hop intensity and extra juiciness are a given. In fact, the style is often attributed to Vinnie Cilurzo, now owner and brewmaster of renowned Russian River Brewing Co. In 1994 rumor has it that Cilurzo while working for Blind Pig Brewery added too much mash to his upcoming beer. Instead of tossing it he ran with it. He later took his innovation to Russian River Brewing where Pliny the Elder became one of the most highly regarded DIPAs in the country. Since then many breweries coast-to-coast have powered up their IPAs, making it one of the most popular styles in the country. Need proof? In 2020 Double / Imperial IPAs ranked as the third highest checked in style on Untappd with 34,000 different DIPAs appearing on the app and 6,585,229 total check-ins. That's a lot of check-ins! To do our part we're drinking G-Bot from @newenglandbrewingco to unlock the “2X” badge, earned by checking-in to five different beers that contain Imperial / Double in its style name. Try 5 more for Level 2! We also highlight @texiKotequilabar in Hamden, CT as our Verified Venue of the Week, and shout out @edmundsoast and @UntitledArt for crafting the best beer and hard seltzer we had this week.
Natalie Cilurzo from Russian River Brewing Co. in the studio with Herlinda Heras and Steve Jaxon on Brew Ha Ha today. Everyone is happy to see each other again after a year apart due to Coronovirus restrictions. Natalie says their Santa Rosa location is still using their park space out in front and they are open daily from 11am to 9:30pm, and Windsor is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11am to 8pm. The Windsor beer garden is back in action since the meal requirement has been removed. Steve says that if you’ve never been to the Windsor location, you have to see it. There are beautiful pictures of it on the website that Natalie shot herself. After having to lay off staff, they are happy to have been able to call many of them back. During the pandemic Vinnie Cilurzo was experimenting with recipes and started a beer club. She brought a sour peach beer. Natalie tells the story of how they were able to buy 2000 pounds of peaches after the Wallridge fire. They got hit hard and evacuated. The fruit already-harvested fruit would otherwise have gone to farmers’ markets and restaurants which were all closed, and they needed to evacuate. They were happy to buy them and they used them to make this amazing beer. She made this Peach Ale, Pêche means peach in French, and that is how this style is known in Belgium. They also made a beer to commemorate George Segal who lived in Sonoma County and passed away recently in Santa Rosa at the age of 87. He lived in Graton half of each year, his son owns two local restaurants, Underwood and Willow Wood. George Segal’s father was a hop broker in New York long ago. He sold Sonoma County cluster hops to big brewers. They still raise hops on Segal ranch in Grand View, Washington. John Sr. was selling hops to Anchor since the ‘70s. Mark Carpenter could tell about that but his first grandchild, a daughter, was born today so Mark is with his family today. Congratulations, Mark. The Segal beer did not pass their QC test yesterday, so they are not releasing it today, but they are brewing it again tomorrow and in two weeks they will have it again, and she’ll bring it in to let Mark talk about it. It’s called Segal Select, a pale ale made with 100% Segal Ranch hops, Cascade, Chinook, Centennial and Comet. Herlinda mentions that today is Earth Day and asks Natalie about sustainability practices at RRBC. These practices are easier to install at first in something new. It was a Greenfield project, which means you purchase a piece of property that has had nothing on it. It was a horse ranch. They have 4 acres of protected wetlands on the property. All the water that runs off the property goes into the wetlands. There are no storm drains on the property. They also have a wastewater treatment plant where they treat all their brewing effluent. They also do reverse osmosis and use the water not for drinking but for any other purposes like washsdowns of tanks. They recapture about 75% of brewing effluent. They have “purple pipe” treated wastewater. Their plumbing is set up to convert to purple pipe as soon as the supply is available.
Talking with Vinnie Cilurzo the brewing mind and co-founder of Russian River Brewing Co. about Pliny the Younger 2021, how he makes changes to Pliny the Elder, and what he sees on the horizon of hop production in America.

Episode 300 - Vinnie Cilurzo, Russian River Brewing Co. We made it, Thieves! This week marks a milestone on the show. We've achieved the 300 episode mark. For the last 100x3 weeks we've come to you Monday at 5pm. Some shows have been better than others, many were at Barcade Jersey City or Treadwell Park in Manhattan. Sometimes we took it on the road to Boston, or Philly, or Atlantic Highlands, NJ. More than once we had Chief, Evan Watson, and our friends stop by to pour beer into the black glass. It got nutty sometimes. To mark this significant number of shows we called out to California and asked Vinnie Cilurzo of Russian River to finally give us the recipe for Pliny the Elder. He did not disappoint. Over the course of this very very very long episode he tastes along with us (Casse was in charge of both beer selection and FedEx. Well done, young man) in the black glasses and shares stories about his first ever canned beer, his relationship with Sierra Nevada and what Younger Day will look like for 2021. We've made it this far because of you, so thanks for all the support and conversation. Looking forward to 300 more. Cheers!Augie, John, Justin, and Casse***As always, you can email your questions, complaints, whimpers, or whines to us at stealthisbeerpodcast@gmail.com. Craft Brew News 11/8/19Federal Judge: MillerCoors Withheld Marketing Materials in Stone Brewing LawsuitA federal magistrate judge last Thursday filed a report and recommendation order largely siding with Stone Brewing’s claims that MillerCoors did not provide all available marketing materials for its Keystone brand during the lawsuit’s discovery phase.Although U.S. Magistrate Judge Linda Lopez declined to impose sanctions requested by Stone against MillerCoors, she did grant a partial award of monetary sanctions to the San Diego-headquartered craft brewery.Stone Brewing filed the lawsuit against MillerCoors in February 2018 in response to new Keystone Light packaging and advertising that featured the words “Key” and “Stone” separated in prominent, capitalized letters. MillerCoors has maintained in its defense that it has used “Stone” and “Stones” in reference to Keystone products dating back to the brand’s debut in 1989.In light of this finding, Lopez recommended that Stone receive a partial payout of its $420,476.63 in legal fees, and Stone be allowed to update its expert reports to include the additional evidence.Craft Beverage Modernization and Tax Reform Act Reaches Record 315 Co-SponsorsA bill to extend federal excise tax (FET) relief has garnered a record number of co-sponsors following a day of action coordinated by the Beer Institute (BI), Brewers Association (BA) and other alcoholic beverage trade groups. The Craft Beverage Modernization and Tax Reform Act (CBMTRA) reached 315 co-sponsors in the U.S. House of Representatives and 73 in the U.S. Senate; In addition to the BA and BI, the bill’s other supporters include the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States, American Craft Spirits Association, Wine Institute, Wine America, the U.S. Association of Cider Makers and the American Mead Makers Association.BA president and CEO Bob Pease said in the release “The widespread bipartisan support the Craft Beverage Modernization and Tax Reform Act has received to date is amazing and America’s craft beer industry is grateful to our many champions in Congress,”. “This legislation has played an integral role in providing financial certainty to more than 7,700 small and independent brewers coast to coast since its enaction in 2017.” Brewers who produce fewer than two million barrels annually pay $3.50 per barrel for their first 60,000 barrels and $7 per barrel after that. Of the bill’s 315 co-sponsors, 159 are Democrats and 156 are Republicans, nearly a 50/50 split between the parties. These 315 co-sponsors make up 72% of the House’s 435 members.Russian River Brews Sonoma Pride to Support FirefightersRussian River is brewing a Sonoma Pride IPL after a wildfire forced the evacuation of the popular Windsor, California, craft brewery last week.Russian River co-founder Natalie Cilurzo told Brewbound that Sonoma Pride will be available next month at both the Windsor and Santa Rosa breweries and proceeds will support a yet-to-be-determined charity that supports firefighters. Vinnie Cilurzo is a brewer who needs no introduction. The cofounder of Russian River Brewing Company has been pushing the limits of hoppy beers for the better part of three decades, developing innovative techniques along the way while defining styles like “Double IPA” with ubiquitous beers like Pliny the Elder. In this conversation, he discusses the early days of C-hops, the origins and design approach to Blind Pig IPA and Pliny the Elder DIPA, adjusting recipes for iconic brands as tastes shift and ingredients vary, tracking polyphenol levels batch by batch, accurately measuring total packaged oxygen, the impact of brewhouse equipment on beer recipes, how they’reeliminating whirlpool hopping in favor of hopping with a hop back, the impact of hops creep while dry hopping, getting faster extraction by mixing tanks while dry hopping, the variance in hops picking windows and the effect of picking time on hops flavors, and more. Today Brew Ha Ha is live at the Russian River Brewing Company in Windsor, California, to celebrate the grand opening of their new facility. Owners Natalie and Vinnie Cilurzo and director of sales Michael Benz join Steve Jaxon, Mark Carpenter and Herlinda Heras on the show. Michael Benz is serving some Pliny that is all of 30 seconds old, straight off the bottling line. Steve says this new place is Mark Carpenter heaven and Mark agrees. "It's a dream come true, really!" - Vinnie Cilurzo on the new Russian River Brewing Co. location Russian River Brewing Company has just opened its big new brewery in Windsor. Mark admires that they have built the brewery to do open fermentation. He describes how most brewers use closed tanks and the beer is fermented and stored in there. Russian River Brewing Co. is one of the few who use this other technique, where the beer is fermented in one open tank and then moved to a cellar tank where it aged, then on to the customer. Mark says brewers don't want to use this method because it's more work, but Mark used it at Anchor and he prefers it. You can look at it and smell it. He tells about seeing their new round fermenters where you can see and smell the yeast. Vinnie is a really creative brewer and now he has the facility to really go ahead and do it. -Mark Carpenter Vinnie goes on to tell how the best, happiest yeast is at the top. They measure the viability of the yeast, the higher the viability the stronger and healthier it is. Most breweries get 90% viability, while at Russian River Brewing, their yeast is so healthy they get 98% viability, which he says makes better beer. Vinnie talks about a how he appreciates that the yeast is alive. He also talks about the new "super clean rooms" in the brewery, with 100% HEPA filtered air, then run through a UV lamp so the air is ultra sterile. Mark Carpenter started at Anchor Brewing in 1971 and retired a few years ago. Steve asks him to compare how brewing has changed, from then to the scene today. Mark says that he and others used to go to Europe to learn about brewing. Now the Europeans are trying hard to do American styles and America has become the brewing leader. Vinnie bought their brewhouse from a German manufacturer, and their technicians are also visiting the show today. Mark says they are lucky in Sonoma to have so many local brewers making good beer. When he went to Europe recently, the beer wasn't always good there, but here, if you're not making good beer, you won't be around for long. Vinnie also tells about visiting Europe to study production and found that in Germany, they stick to their Pilsner, Helles, Dunkel, Wheat Beer and Merzen. But he says now they are also making IPAs and other craft beers there, following the lead of American brewers. Vinnie goes on to tell how beer is a commodity in Germany. But now they are making "craft beer" and have taken the lead from us, making styles that we pioneered. It all started with Fritz Maytag and Anchor Brewing. Vinnie says he made a batch of Barleywine recently for the first time in ten years. Mark tells how Fritz Maytag saw some Barleywine, which some ladies were drinking. Herlinda says it's thick and unctuous and dark. Mark remembers how Fritz came back and said they were going to make a Barleywine at Anchor. He noticed that they had names and someone at Anchor named their Barleywine "Old Foghorn" Vinnie's will be called Old Gibeldygotch. The name comes from his father in Syracuse, New York. Mike Benz talks about his approach to sales as director of sales for Russian River Brewing Co. They are looking to build their network of distribution slowly and deliberately, first taking care of those who have sold their beer at retail and who often would run out; first they will make sure that they have a little more beer for their shelves. Natalie explains how their sales operation is set up, so they can focus on their core strengths which are bringing people to them and giving...

Welcome back everybody! Alex and Ryan start season three off right with Pliny the Elder by Russian River Brewing Company. RRBC was founded when Korbel Champagne Cellars, a winery located in the Russian River Valley area of Sonoma County, decided to try brewing beer. Vinnie Cilurzo was hired as the brewmaster, and used brettanomyces, a special type of yeast, to brew sour beers in wine barrels in 1999. In 2002, Korbel decided to sell the brewery to Cilurzo and his wife, who eventually moved the brewery to Santa Rosa, CA. Cilurzo is one of the most innovative microbrewers in the country, and is credited with inventing the Double India Pale Ale, also known as the Imperial IPA, when he was the head brewer at Blind Pig Brewing Company in Temecula. Pliny the Elder is slightly bitter with tastes of malt and hops, and has a fresh hop aroma of floral, citrus, and pine. We've done Brewing on the Cheap a few times now, but not in a long time. On this episode of The Session, we invite Chris Graham from MoreBeer! back into the studio to catch us up on all the new ways we can build a basic homebrew system on the cheap. It seems the homebrew world has exploded in recent years, bringing an influx of great equipment at a reasonable price - something unheard of 10 years ago. Then, on the other side of the equipment coin, Chris takes us through the price-is-no-object equipment we can buy once we all hit the lotto. In the middle there we chat with Natalie and Vinnie Cilurzo from Russian River Brewing Company about their Sonoma Pride foundation, and Steve Doty from Shady Oak Barrel House about how those two companies are raising money to help their community rebuild from the devastating wildfires we are experiencing here in NorCal.
