The Ag Net News Hour Hosts, Lorrie Boyer and Nick Papagni, “The Ag Meter,” discussed the impact of Trump's tariffs on farmers, with Brooke Rollins emphasizing the need to realign the world economy to benefit American farmers. Rollins criticized previous tariff regimes and highlighted the Biden administration's misuse of funds. She assured that Congress is working on providing necessary support if needed. The conversation also touched on federal cuts to USDA programs, with Rollins clarifying that these were COVID-era funds, not intended for long-term use. Additionally, Rollins reiterated the administration's support for ethanol and efforts to secure the border, which has reduced egg prices by 60%. The discussion on the Ag Net News Hour focused on the impact of the Biden administration's Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) on food bank and school lunch programs, noting that while the IRA provided temporary funding, sustainable funding is now being implemented. Brooke Rollins emphasized the need for efficient use of funds and transparency. The conversation also touched on egg prices, highlighting the discrepancy between wholesale and retail prices. Additionally, the hosts discussed trade tensions with China, noting the equal 125% tariffs and the potential for negotiations. They praised Brooke Rollins and Karoline Leavitt for their transparency and commitment to their roles. Nick Papagni “The Ag Meter”and Lorrie Boyer discussed the ongoing water crisis in California, highlighting the mismanagement of water resources. They cited an SFGATE article, noting that 80% of California's water is wasted by flowing into the ocean. Southern California receives only 30% of its water supply from the north, which must be captured before it is lost. They emphasized the need for better water management to avoid annual droughts. Additionally, they discussed President Trump's proposal to legalize undocumented farm workers, aiming to stabilize the agricultural workforce and reduce the risk of mass deportations. The USDA's Farm Labor Survey indicated that 42% of US farm workers are undocumented, many of whom are settled and not migrant.
The Lululemon store on the corner of 25th and Broadway in Uptown Oakland has quietly closed its doors for good.Signs posted outside of the popular workout apparel brand's storefront indicated the closure occurred last Monday, as local Redditors first noted. Throughout the early 1970s, California's Bay Area was in the grip of terror as multiple serial killers operated at the time same time and in more or less the same space. In time, some of these killers, like Ed Kemper, would be caught, while others, like the Zodiac Killer, would remain unidentified. Yet it was the ones who appeared to kill at random, without any preferred victim, that would prove the most terrifying and most difficult to catch. Herbert Mullin was one such killer, and while he may have been active for a very short period, he managed to do a tremendous amount of damage in such a little amount of time.Over a five-month period in late 1972 and early 1973, Herbert Mullin killed thirteen people, including a college girl, a Catholic priest, and a former high school friend and that friend's neighbors. To investigators, Mullin's victims appeared to be—and indeed largely were—chosen at random and the weapons used were chosen more out of convenience than pathology. Had Mullin's final murder not been committed in full view of witnesses, there's a very good chance he would have gone on to kill many more people before being caught, if he ever was.Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesAssociated Press. 1972. When a girl walking on a Provincetown, Massachusetts beach discovered the decomposing body of a young woman in the summer of 1974, it began an investigation into what would become one of the most notorious cold cases in the state's history. The victim—who would remain unidentified for nearly five decades—and her killer were the source of much speculation, with theories ranging from an extra in Jaws to the victim of the local mob. After decades of mystery, DNA from the remains of “the Lady of the Dunes” was subject to extensive genetic matching and was finally identified as thirty-seven-year-old California resident Ruth Terry. A year later, authorities in Massachusetts announced their main suspect in the murder was Guy Muldavin, Terry's husband at the time of her death. Muldavin died in 2002 and thus couldn't be prosecuted for the crime, so the case was finally closed. Identifying Ruth's killer brought an end to one of the most enduring murder mysteries in Massachusetts, yet identifying the Lady of the Dunes and her killer turned out to the be the beginning of a new mystery. Indeed, investigators soon learned this might not have been Muldavin's first murder, but one of several mysterious disappearances that traced back to him.Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesAbrams, Norma, and Sidney Kline. 1960.

It's All Relative only lasted a season, but that's actually longer than most LGBTQ-inclusive sitcoms that followed in Will & Grace's wake, and for what it's worth, its pilot shows a lot of promise. Read GEE's write-up in Emmy magazine, which is basically the same thing as actually winning an Emmy. Buy the revised edition of Steven's book, Alternate Channels: Queer Images on 20th-Century TV. Listen to Steven's previous episode, about Tony Randall's Love, Sidney. Drew is pulling quotes from the following articles: “The gaying of TV / Advertisers step up as more shows step out” (SFGate, Aug. 24, 2003) “Review: It's All Relative” (Variety, Sep. 28, 2003) “It's profitable to be a little bit gay” (LA TImes, Aug. 27, 2003) “Gays on TV: Hardly a Trend” (Chicago Tribune, Aug. 12, 2003)
When Kathryn Wombacher suspected her husband, Walter Andrew, of having an affair in the spring of 1920, she hired a private detective to follow him on one of his many “out-of-town” trips that he'd taken in their short marriage. However, rather than follow Walter out of town, the private detective tracked the man less than a mile from his home in Hollywood, where he discovered that Walter had indeed been carrying on a relationship with another woman—but that was to be the least of Kathryn's worries.Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesAssociated Press. 1920. A set of barriers were recently installed in front of Dior's Union Square location to prevent thieves from crashing their cars into the building, local officials confirmed — and it's possible that it will soon be one of many stores featuring the odd-looking fixtures. “We are aware of these bollards and a Public Works inspector reached out to the fronting business owner yesterday,” San Francisco Public Works spokesperson Rachel Gordon told SFGATE in an email. The department is working with local stores on installing decorative planters and bollards — or sturdy posts — to prevent cars from plowing into them, she said.

Today on The LA Food Podcast… What game is Norm Langer playing by reposting Rick Caruso's scathing video of Mayor Karen Bass' efforts (or lacktherof) to clean up MacArthur Park? Why is Martha Stewart irate over the way she's being portrayed in her brand new Netflix documentary “Martha?” And why is a trip Dan Tana's pretty much obligatory in your near future, dear listener? We're joined today by SF Gate's Karen Palmer to discuss all of the above. She's filling in for Father Sal and, dare I say, Father Sal watch out. If he keeps abusing his PTO days, Karen just made a case for why there might need to be a change in administration. Too soon? In Part 2 we're joined by Richard Pink of Pink's Hot Dogs. The Hollywood icon that is Pink's is celebrating its 85th birthday and is giving out 85 cent hot dogs to celebrate. I caught up with Richard at Pink's to hear about the promotion, but more importantly, to hear his reflections on the little hot dog stand that could. Thursday night kicked off the start of week two of the NFL season. And after years of ceding the proverbial playing field to Republicans, Democrats are trying to take back football! Drew Magary, columnist for Defector and SF Gate, explains how adopting the language of football became a winning strategy for Dems heading into November. And in headlines: Former President Donald Trump insisted he won Tuesday night's debate during his first rally since his chaotic performance, a state judge in North Dakota struck down the state's near-total abortion ban, and the first ballots for the upcoming general election are officially in the mail. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for August 28, 2024 is: lollygag LAH-lee-gag verb To lollygag is to spend time doing things that are not useful or serious, or in other words, to fool around and waste time. // Stop lollygagging and get to work! // The player was kicked off the team for lollygagging during practice. See the entry > Examples: “Pete … dates all the way back to 1925 in the Disney ‘Alice Comedies.' He's older than Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, who first appeared in Disney's 1927 ‘Trolley Troubles.' And he's older than Mickey Mouse himself, who made his debut in 1928's ‘Steamboat Willie,' along with none other than Pete. Back then, however, he was Captain Pete—and a decidedly bad boss to an admittedly shoddy employee more interested in whistling and lollygagging than swabbing the decks.” — Julie Tremaine, SFGate.com, 23 Mar. 2023 Did you know? Lollygag (sometimes spelled lallygag) has been used informally to talk about acts of wasting time since at least the mid-19th century. Some might relate to this 1856 quote from The North Californian: “Oh ye denizens of cooler climes, how we do envy you in these days. Oh, for a lodge on some vast iceberg, or a chance to lallygag amid piles of snow!” In its earlier days, lollygag could also apply to displays of affection; back in 1946, one Navy captain considered lollygagging enough of a problem to issue this stern warning: “Lovemaking and lollygagging are hereby strictly forbidden.... The holding of hands ... is a violation of naval discipline....” Nowadays, lollygag doesn't usually refer to flirting or cuddling—instead, it's the “dawdle” meaning that gets the love.
The last remaining Denny's in San Francisco has shuttered after nearly 25 years. The 24-hour diner chain's 816 Mission St. location closed Aug. 1, franchise owner Chris Haque told SFGATE. As of Aug. 12, the Denny's sign has been painted over. “We're the only store left, and we operated until the last day that we could,” Haque said. “The cost of doing business is tremendous. There's vandalism, and people come and eat and walk away, and there's no one to stop them.” Haque claimed that dining and dashing was a big issue at the Denny's near Union Square, which he said cut into the restaurant's profit margins. He also pointed to the lack of conventions in San Francisco over the past few years, which the restaurant typically depended on for business. Haque used to be the franchise owner of a Denny's location in San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf as well, which closed in 2019, and still runs a Denny's in Tacoma, Washington.

On the night of October 3, 2002, Gwen Amber Rose Araujo, a transgender teen from California attended a party at a home rented by Jose and Paul Merel. Michael Magidson, Jason Nabors, Jason Cazares, Emmanuel Merel, and Nicole Brown were all present at the party. Upon learning that Gwen was biologically born a male, the men became irate that they had engaged in sexual acts with her previously. This led to a brutal attack on Gwen which ultimately caused her death. Gwen's case paved the way for important legislation being passed in California which aims to eradicate the use of the gay/trans panic defense in court cases. On the morning of October 12, 1944, Lulu Atwood arrived at the El Palacio Apartments in West Hollywood, where she worked cleaning apartments for wealthy and celebrity clients. When Lulu reached the apartment of twenty-year-old Georgette Bauerdorf, she called out and when she got no reply, she entered the apartment to begin her work. Inside, Lulu could hear the water running in the bathtub upstairs, and when she made her way to the second-floor bathroom, she found the dead body of Georgette Bauerdorf half-submerged in the water. As a well-known socialite and the prominent daughter of a wealthy oil tycoon, Georgette's untimely death surprised the Los Angeles society circles in which she moved. But when her death was officially labeled a murder, and one with sexual overtones, their surprise turned to shock and dismay—who would have wanted to kill Georgette Bauerdorf and why?As a member of Hollywood's elite class, Georgette Bauerdorf's murder dominated the headlines of Los Angeles papers for weeks, but when the leads dried up just a few weeks later and no new suspects were identified, the case went cold and by the end of the year the investigation was essentially shelved. Once considered alongside the Black Dahlia as one of Los Angeles' most notorious unsolved murders, today the story of Georgette Bauerdorf has now all but faded from public memory, making it unlikely the mystery will ever be solved.
