The Empire of Forgetting (Cape) is the final collection of the Scottish poet, novelist and essayist John Burnside, who died in May last year. Fellow poet Kathleen Jamie describes him as ‘a titan of literature…. His passing leaves a gap not only in our literature, but in our ability to exist in the world. He increased the possible ways of our being.' To coincide with this publication, Cape are reissuing Burnside's three volumes of memoir, A Lie About My Father, Waking Up in Toytown and I Put a Spell on You with new introductions. Poet and essayist Michael Symmons Roberts and editor Hannah Westland paid tribute to Burnside and celebrated his life and work.
Belfast singer songwriter Joshua Burnside released his sixth studio album It's Not Going To Be Okay via Nettwork Music Group on March 20. This is a record born out of loss and the fragile act of continuing. Written and recorded in the wake of the death of Joshua's close friend Dean Jendoubi, the album is his most stripped-back and unguarded work to date. “It's a grief record but also a love record for Dean, for my family, for being alive at all," he says. On this episode of the TPOE podcast, Joshua Burnside talks about touring the US with Ye Vagabonds; getting nominated for the Choice Prize for 2025 album Teeth of TIme; embracing traditional Irish music; grief, the creative process and paying tribute to his friend Dean; the direct nature and homour in the songs; and his family's reaction to the record. Joshua Burnside is an experimental folk songwriter, singer and producer. He takes influence from alternative electronica trad, and Irish folk, chopping and blending them with a mixture of found sounds, world music and unorthodox production methods. Joshua shares new single ‘Something Else'. It is now the third single to be released from Burnside's upcoming album, It's Not Going to be Okay, due for release on Nettwerk on 20 March 2026. It's Not Going to be OK is a record born out of loss and the fragile act of continuing. Written and recorded in the wake of the death of Joshua's closest friend, the album is his most stripped-back and unguarded work to date. “I wrote and recorded this album after the death of my best friend Dean Jendoubi. He was an incredible person, and I miss him every day. “Grief has always been a big part of my music; it's the reason I started writing songs when I was 13. And so, as I did all those years ago, I reach for the guitar, try a few chords and sing a few words and for a brief moment I feel like it's going to be okay.” The new single is a tender, off-kilter folk reflection on drinking, doomscrolling, and reaching for something to believe in when life's cold truths hit hardest. Burnside is routinely lauded for his intricate production and layered storytelling, but here, he pares everything down here to its rawest form. It's Not Going to be Okay is tender and unflinching, highlighting the beautiful simplicity of Burnside's acoustic balladry and his poetic lyrics. Where previous albums explored folklore, politics, and myth through surreal, tense textures and offbeat folk supplemented by electronica, It's Not Going to be Okay distils his brilliance down with immaculate precision where each track serves like an entry into a grief journal. He now begins a new phase and wraps up his East Coast US Tour and prepares a large UK and EU headline tour in 2026.
Welcome, welcome, welcome. This is the Badass Records podcast, and I'm pleased to let you know that Episode No. 196 features none other than Joel vs Joel's very own, Joel Stratton.Joel vs Joel's debut album, Smile in the Mirror, came out in August of last year, and Brad Smith (Episode No. 108) of Enigmatic Brunch Records was the wizard behind the curtains of making that happen. But let's not let that detract us from Joel.I am thankful for the opportunity to've sat with Joel and talked about his release, his approach, and, well, a few of his favorite records.I know. It's the same old stuff every week(ish) here, but that turns out to be the actual skinny, so...his list looked a little something like this:Talk Talk's The Colour of Spring (1986)Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (2002), WilcoElliott Smith's From a Basement on the Hill (2004)Tinks (2014), Pether Schlamb Anyway, please consider giving Joel an Instagram follow; you can find him at joelvs_joel_, and -- again -- his stuff is out there for both streaming and purchase. Check it.Thank you very much to both Joel and to anyone/everyone that supports the show.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the audio pieces found in this here episode; they ain't mines. I managed ta' lift 'em from the ranks of a dusty, forgotten bin in the corner of my uncle's barn in Republic, and I figured they was worth sharin', so here's the skinny: This is an R.L. Burnside tune. It's one of many fine, fine cuts he shared with the world. This one in particular's called, "Got Messed Up," and I snagged it from his phenomenal 2000 release, Wish I Was in Heaven Sitting Down, c/o Fat Possum Records. So there. Put that in your royalties pipe an' smoke it.

LATE ONE SPRING evening in 1917, a man named A.L. Sauvie was trying to sleep, and not having much success. The problem was his downstairs neighbor, who had gotten roaring drunk and was now verbally abusing, and physically beating, his wife. Complicating the situation even further was the fact that the downstairs neighbor was Sauvie's landlord. He was renting an upstairs room in the Clackamas Tavern, just outside Oregon City. The Clackamas claimed to specialize in chicken dinners, but its real claim to secretive fame was as a speakeasy. Prohibition had started early in Oregon. Also, the wife-beating owner of the Clackamas was about as close to royalty as old Portland's liquor industry had. His name was August Erickson — the former owner of the legendary Erickson's Saloon, on Burnside downtown. (Portland, Multnomah and Clackamas county; 1880s, 1890s, 1900s) (For text and pictures, see https://offbeatoregon.com/2506b.august-erickson-cautionary-tale-701.520.html)

Whitney Burnside built her résumé at some of the best breweries in the Pacific Northwest, so when she and her husband Doug—a celebrated chef—embarked on their post-COVID project of working together on a brewpub they dubbed Grand Fir (https://www.grandfirbrewing.com), the Portland beer world grew excited (we did too—for more, see Kate Bernot's case study on Grand Fir (https://brewingindustryguide.com/case-study-grand-fir) from our Spring 2024 issue of the Brewing Industry Guide). Now, not yet three years old but with three World Beer Cup medals and three Great American Beer Festival medals under their belt, Grand Fir continues to garner attention for remarkable beer. Burnside loves hoppy beers with personality, and the brewpub and beers themselves ooze character, with defining forest flavor and aroma notes anchoring wider exploration. This conversation centers on West Coast and contemporary American IPA, with a focus on how Burnside often uses large blends of hops to build layers of character. Along the way, she discusses: building ultra-lean, 1.5°P FG West Coast IPA with intense hop character blending base malts for color and body in smaller hoppy beers differentiating between “traditional American” and “West Coast” IPA using classic hops in modern formats selecting malt to support the strong flavors of New Zealand hops constructing nuanced hop blends with five or more varieties And more. Kyle and Matthew are joined one more time by one of our longest running regular guests Jeremy Scippio (@jeremycomedy). We have enjoyed being the mouthpiece for Jeremy's takes on the comic book world and our final episode does not disappoint. The boys look the MCU's place in 2025. A little worse for wear but in an interesting place. We'll give you that take in the episode notes because mostly Kyle and Jeremy fight about some dumb stuff about Spider-Man. Like, Jeremy takes a call, we come back, like 30 minutes goes by and then they get into it again. Don't worry, Burnside is riding along with you dear listener. So hop into the Radtasticar for one more wild ride into the Marvel universe. Weekly Rads: Burnside - Love Island USA New Season (Show) Kyle – Pacing (Band), Jeremy rapping as Nas at his birthday party (thing that happened) Jeremy – Scenes from Gladiator 2 where Denzel kisses a guy that nobody seems to remember filming.
