B.Cox looks back at underground powerhouse label Rawkus Records and their first major compilation album Soundbombing, which turns 25. After releasing Company Flow's now legendary debut LP Funcrusher Plus earlier in the summer, the label released the compilation with previously released 12" singles in mixtape format. Mixed, scratched and hosted by DJ Evil Dee of Da Beatminerz and Black Moon, the album introduced us to future prominent emcees such as Yasiin Bey (fka Mos Def),Talib Kweli and Shabaam Sahdeeq and producers such as Hi-Tek, Nick Wiz and Shawn J. Period. Sticking to their underground roots with he mixtape format, Rawkus sought to appeal to their underground base and wanted to capitalize on the success that Company Flow had with their debut that summer. While the album did not chart commercially, it made its buzz in the underground with DJs and fans. Several songs are considered underground classics and the release started a run of compilation releases including the beginning of the Lyricist Lounge series and the continuation of Soundbombing series. It also led to the formation of two groups that would have great success: Black Star (Def and Kweli) and Reflection Eternal (Kweli and Hi-Tek); all which helped Rawkus to achieve rare success both in the underground and limited success commercially.Visit The Vault Classic Music Reviews Onlinewww.vaultclassicpod.comSupport The Vault Classic Music Review on Buy Me A Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/vaultclassicpodShow NotesThe Hundreds: Counting Down Our 10 Favorite Rawkus Records Albumshttps://thehundreds.com/blogs/content/counting-10-favorite-rawkus-records-albumsSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vault-classic-music-reviews-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Episode 78 is our 4th anniversary special. After the crazy year we've all had, it felt right to end 2020 with a TIP celebration. We've produced over 23 episodes, close to 90 hours of content, including 7 tributes, 2 album spotlights and some pretty memorable, informative and occasionally contentious interviews with artists like R.A. The Rugged Man, The Beatnuts, Spice 1, Jeru The Damaja, Ras Kass, Shawn J. Period, Meyhem Lauren, Apathy and Black muthafuckin' Thought of The Roots Crew! Whether it was our 5-part 1995 Tribute, our 6+ hour MF Doom tribute, The Remix Show or Justice For George, we tried to keep you entertained in every conceivable way throughout this taxing year. As many of your already know, an awful lot goes into creating each episode. No disrespect to those who strictly do interview shows or hop on Instagram Live for an hour, but we try to produce each show like a movie. In addition to those marathon-like interviews we do, we curate the music from the finest of hip-hop ingredients. From the selections to the sequencing to the mixing to the samples, our goal is to provide you a product that you'll listen to, not once, not twice, but frequently. It's easy to put out content these days, but the average consumer chews it up and spits it out, only to be forgotten a week later. But in a year from now, when you want to remind yourself what 1995 was like, or if you want to suggest to a friend why Black Thought is the GOAT, or tell a friend why MF DOOM is one of the important rappers of the last two decades, you have our shows for that. When you want to re-live classic albums like Street Level or The Sun Rises In The East and learn things we've never heard before directly from the artists themselves, then you have our album spotlights for that. When you only want to hear the very best remixes or collaborations, we got you covered. We are a hip-hop library; A time capsule and ultimately the most complete hip-hop show you've heard since the great Stretch & Bob days. Michael Jackson called himself the King of Pop. Howard Stern calls himself the King of all Media. On Take It Personal, we call ourselves the King of all Tributes. No other podcast or radio show for that matter is doing what we're doing. Tonight is a celebration for sure. For just one episode, we decided to do something totally off-course. You're going to hear some of our FAVORITE joints from the 80s. We're talking Tears For Fears, The Clash, Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, Billy Idol, Pet Shop Boys, Naked Eyes, George Michael, Michael Jackson and much more. If you grew up in the 70s or an 80s baby like myself, you're going to love this show and play it over and over and over again! Thank you all for listening, supporting, and giving us a reason to produce the best hip-hop podcast we can make. Like the legendary Bret Hart says the best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be. Sincerely, Take It Personal Radio

If you were a follower of underground hip hop during the Rawkus years, then today's company will be a special treat for you (especially if you are from the 804). With his cousin and a high school friend, this gentleman's rap group quietly helped open doors for "southern-based" emcees and groups to get noticed by record labels in NYC. Their group, Down South, had a single and video called "Southern Comfort" that rang through the underground. After meeting Mos Def, today's company's name as a producer started to bubble and led to working with some underground hip hop royalty. The 804's own Mad Skillz, Q-Tip, Ras Kass, Artifacts, and many others dropped vocals on his production work; and during our conversation, I learned that he was part of the original 4 individuals who began what we now know as Black Star. Jigga WHAT? Jigga WHO? How did I not know that? We discussed his music career, how his spiritual journey changed his life (and his use of sampling), and his Drum Stacks sound design endeavor that is ready to take flight. Say hello to 804-born and raised music producer, Shawn J. Period. -Source

BANG! @southernvangard #radio presents the SHAWN J. PERIOD® interview session! If there was ever a week where Smithsonian Grade applied, this is it. We’re documenting history over here, Vangardians, not to mention giving ya’ll straight GAME - so fix your face, sit up straight, pay attention and take notes! This producer’s history and evolution over the years is remarkable - from getting signed by Rob “Reef” Tewlow & Stretch Armstrong to Big Beat / Atlantic Records in the early 90’s as part of hip-hop trio “Down South”, transitioning to a full time producer and being mentored by some of the best in the game like JuJu & V.I.C. of The Beatnuts, T-Ray and many more to being behind the boards for what could eventually be considered one of the biggest hip-hop singles of its time, not to mention a certified classic - Mos Def’s “Universal Magnetic” b/w “If You Can Huh You Can Hear”. Shortly after that, he took what seemed like an abrupt break from music to focus on family, but has been making a calculated return to the game as of late. We get on the horn with Shawn to talk about all of this and more, including his much welcomed re-entry to the scene after the extended hiatus, why he was unknowingly WAY ahead of his time by making a move to sample-free production in the late 90’s and how he’s leveraging his invaluable experiences to launch the next phase of his career in music. Shawn talks about the soon come debut of his sound design company, Drum Stacks, his partnership and upcoming podcast with Strong Island producer Kel C and how his relationship with Yasiin Bey (FKA Mos Def) has evolved over the years all while still maintaining their friendship. Don’t get it twisted - we get into some real nerd production ish too, but that’s way too much to get into here, so go ahead folks - press play without delay, ‘cause it’s most definitely that good good and ALWAYS that #SmithsonianGrade #TwiceAWeek #WeAreTheGard // southernvangard.com // @southernvangard on #applepodcasts #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud #youtube // #hiphop #rap #undergroundhiphop #boombap #DJ #mix #interview #podcast #ATL #WORLDWIDE #RIPCOMBATJACK Recorded live December 1, 2019 @ Dirty Blanket Studios, Marietta, GA southernvangard.com @southernvangard on #applepodcasts #soundcloud #youtube #spotifypodcast #googlepodcasts #stitcherradio #mixcloud #SmithsonianGrade #TwiceAWeek #WeAreTheGard twitter/IG: @southernvangard @jondoeatl @cappuccinomeeks

Shawn J. Period made an enduring mark in music during his prolific production output of the 90's - with his seminal hip-hop trio Down South (Big Beat/Atlantic) and later across a sprawling canvas for artists like Mos Def, Black Star, DJ Krush, Artifacts, Mike Zoot, Boot Camp and numerous others. Host Peter Agoston and Shawn J. dig deep into that period of time and bring it full circle in this rare and candid conversation on his life and career. After years of communicating on the phone and email this episode also marked the first time they met in person. Both natives of Virginia - we know Peter was excited to talk about that fact, so shouts to all those in or from VA listening! The true heads will definitely find this chat a treat and if you happen to be unfamiliar with this incredible multi-instrumentalist / producer, we hope it's a great primer to his catalog of music from then to now.
