Send us a Text Message. "Everything I make, I try to make it my favorite album of all time."Simplicity is genius. Great artists can make the ostensibly impossible seem effortless. It's in this rarefied air where you'll find Detroit's Apollo Brown, constantly conjuring fresh innovations out of a tried-and-true formula. For the last decade, the Mello Music Group artist has singularly re-defined and expanded the foundation of what boom bap production can sound like in the 21st Century.Just consider the revered legends that have collaborated on full-length albums with him: Rass Kass (“Blasphemy”), Guilty Simpson (“Dice Game,”) Skyzoo (“Easy Truth Sessions”), Big Pooh (“Words Paint Pictures”) and O.C. (“Trophies.”) No less than DJ Premier declared the latter “hip-hop for the people,” naming “Trophies” the best album of 2012.This is the tradition that Apollo Brown triumphantly upholds: the head-nodding, screwface-inducing, soul-replenishing lineage of Primo and Pete Rock, J Dilla and Large Professor, Mobb Deep and DJ Muggs. He makes music for old and young heads—bone bruising beats that summon visceral images of back alley brawls in '81, pool hall melees, and metropolitan griminess. An East Coast sound with a midwestern mentality, channelling the marrow-freezing chill of the wind fleeing Lake Michigan.Everyone from Danny Brown to Chance The Rapper, Freddie Gibbs to Masta Ace, Black Milk to Oddisee have spit bars over his beats. Don't sleep on his projects with The Left, Ugly Heroes, and Hassaan Mackey, or his several acclaimed instrumental albums. Amounted together, it gives Apollo Brown a body of work that lives up to the legacy of the older gods. The explanation why is pretty simple. If you still have any doubts, all you need to do is press play.Buy Apollo Brown's Music HereFollow Apollo Brown on IG HereSupport the Show.WEBSITE AND MERCH! - http://www.officialchopshoppod.com

In 2002 Little Brother MC Phonte Coleman stumbled across one of them on Okayplayer's message board and asked if he could put his rhymes over it, and soon a friendship and a musical relationship were born. This transatlantic collaboration, which they called The Foreign Exchange, led to an album, Connected, in 2004, after which Nicolay continued producing tracks for Little Brother and Cesar Comanche, releasing City Lights Vol. 1.5 first only online and then through BBE Records in 2005. The Dutch Masters, Vol. 1, which featured Nicolay DJing, came out that same year, followed by Here in 2006. In 2008 the producer teamed up with Houston rapper Kay (whom he had also met through message boards and had put on a track on Here) and issued the album Time:Line. Led by brothers DJ Evil Dee and Mr. Walt, they honed their beat-making skills individually before joining forces and crafting the collective's trademark "boom bap" sound: an emphasis on the bottom end, the bass lines, the hard kicks, and the snares. BUCKWILD / DITC / WORKING WITH BIG L, BIGGIE, DITC AND MORE / BLACK ROB'S WHOA - THE STORY BEHIND THE GREATEST CLUB RECORD OF ALL TIME

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 13, 2024 119:48

Bronx-born producer Buckwild was, and continues to be, instrumental in this ever-growing movement. For the past few years, hip-hop producer, Buckwild, has contributed a countless amount of classics to a game that's a mere 20 years into its prime. Alumni of the D.T.I.C.(Diggin' in the Crates) school of beat making, Buckwild-a former DJ-first earned a respectable reputation as one of New York City's most bought mix-tape DJ's in the early 90's. Under the guidance of his neighbors/mentors and fellow established artist Lord Finesse of Diamond D, Buckwild made the jump from DJ to producer with 1993's "Shit Is Real" featuring both Diamond, Finesse along with Sadat X of Brand Nubian. The song would be the first of many underground classics constructed at the hands of Buckwild.  A year later, Buckwild provided the unforgettable backdrop for O.C. for what became the classic, "Times Up". Soon thereafter, Buck found himself remixing tracks for underground mainstays, such as Funk Doobiest, ("Rock On"), The Alcoholiks ("Damn") and Artifacts ("C'mon Wit Da Get Down" w/ Busta Rhymes) to name a few. By 1995 it was clear as day; artist requested a "Buckwild Remix" on their single releases. Buckwild's remix clout soon blossomed into album cut request. For the next few years, Buckwild conjured up a slew of classic backgrounds for underground delegates such as Mic Geronimo, Organized Konfusion, O.C. as well as Capone-N-Noreaga just to name a few. An advance in Buckwild's already promising career took place in1996 when he provided the late, great Notorious B.I.G. with the mellow exotic-backdrop for "Story To Tell", off the multi-platinum release, Life After Death. The song became one of the greatest rap-tales in hip-hop history. Soon thereafter Buckwild accommodated memorable backgrounds for legends like Jay-Z, Kool G. Rap and the late Big Pun, respectively. Just when the world thought they'd heard the Bronx vet at his peek, Buckwild supplied Bad Boy Artist Black Rob, with the precise background for an idea Black Rob had named "Whoa". Sure enough, the aptly titled, "Whoa", became the biggest record of 2000 and helped push a mildly anticipated album towards platinum status. That same year, Buckwild was named one of The Source Magazine's Producers of the Year. Having supplied Bad Boy with some of its most memorable hits, Buckwild was given a position among P.Diddy's prestigious Hit Men; a group of producers who supply P.Diddy with his chart topping sound. At the dawn of the new millennium, Buck continues to push towards the next level heights by working with an array of artists. Not one to forget his roots, Buckwild continues to provide the established and the non-established with outstanding backdrops that provide a particular feel for each respected artist; thus continuing to push this hip-hop-movement toward the new century.  Support the showWEBSITE AND MERCH! - http://www.officialchopshoppod.com

Soon he began writing his own rhymes, but quickly found that his true talents lay in production. In 2001 famed beat-maker Pete Rock played a track Brown did with rapper Grap Luva, "What Ruling Means," for Marley Marl, who was so impressed with what he heard that he included the song on his album Re-Entry, which came out that same year. That led to work with De La Soul and DJ Jazzy Jeff, but it wasn't until 2004, when The Brown Album, his remixed version of Jay-Z's The Black Album (which came before Danger Mouse's The Grey Album), hit the streets that Brown started to receive real attention. After a succession of collaborations and singles, Kev released his solo debut, I Do What I Do, in 2005. The album, which was released on Up Above Records, had the producer rapping at least one verse on each of the 13 songs, as well as featuring guest MCs from his crew, the D.C.-area-based Low Budget, and Phonte Coleman from Little Brother. He creates liberated spaces and opportunities for Empowering the Culture and enhancing the work and artistry of countless other creators. Kuddie is a musician. His indulgence in various forms of artistic expression help to drive the inspiration of his timeless, eclectic sound. His notably dualistic style is best described as a marriage of soulful, rich and jazzy melodies laid over hard hitting, head nodding drums.  Kuddie is a creator.  Kuddie took note of a senior creating beats as part of a music program, and opportunity knocked as the senior prepared to graduate and passed the torch. Kuddie hit the ground running and soon the entire high school band's music was a product of a future super-producer. Kuddie would eventually be introduced to the recording studio and soon found himself writing verses to lay over the tracks he was already producing. Thus, started his interest in developing his talents as a rap artist.   The influences of Michael Jackson, Prince, Quincy Jones, LL Cool J, Run DMC, and Fat Boys were simply a few that ignited the realization that music had bigger plans for him. Kuddie's family, community and untold number of people and experiences have contributed to the man he is today.   His influence and contribution to Northwest Hip-Hop began to surface in the early aughts, in the work of artists such as Luni Coleone, Cool Nutz, and The Parker Brothaz. In 2003, Kuddie became the hype man for The Parker Brothaz, and it wasn't long before he found himself working alongside other Northwest talents such as J-Hen (Now known as Henny) and Dow Jones, who would one day form Tha Bizness Productions, a force in contemporary Hip-Hop with production credits for names such as Young Money Entertainment (“Every Girl”), Drake (“The Winner”), and other major players such as Ne-Yo, R. Kelly, Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, and more. His collaborations with other talented musicians are nothing short of exquisite. An example of this collaboration is his contributions to J. Pinder's “Code Red”. The track “Go Far” is an undeniable masterpiece.  Support the showWEBSITE AND MERCH! - http://www.officialchopshoppod.com

His first foray into production was nearly two decades ago, when he composed his early instrumentals while living in Italy. Now back in the US, working out of his Atlanta home studio, the years of nomadic crate-digging shine through STLNDRMS' trippy, slowed-down soul samples and crunchy drum hits. BUY STLNDRMS PACKS - https://stlndrms.com/FOLLOW STLNDRMS ON YOUTUBE! - https://www.youtube.com/@Stlndrms Support the showWEBSITE AND MERCH! - http://www.officialchopshoppod.com

Ment has worked with the likes of KRS One, DITC, and many more.MentPlus' passion for music is rooted in his upbringing in Brooklyn. In his early days in BK, which he called a war zone, he discovered his love for music listening to the genre-swapping radio stations at his grandma's home. He was also introduced to turntables through his older brother's friend, a local DJ with a penchant for the Golden Era classics, and needed a place to store his equipment, where Ment would soon learn to navigate his way around a pair of 1200s. He and his friends used dusty samplers and tape decks to craft beats, first from Ultimate Breaks and Beats compilations and soon after from their own crate-dug collections. A true Hip-Hop head, he tagged every so often and used the letters "M E N T," hence his deejay/producer moniker. He now added Plus to give himself the strength to focus on his work amid the industry BS.
