Rod and Karen banter about a weird insult aimed at Rod, flatbread pizzas, parents who allow kids to dress in costumes, cartoon theme songs that go hard, Karen's attempted Jedi Mind Trick, and football fans who dress up in cosplay. Then they discuss political news, medical debt will no longer count against your credit score, Apple settles Siri privacy lawsuit, Megan Thee Stallion granted restraining order against Tory Lanez, Sony CEO copping pleas, man gets stuck in self driving car at the airport, man caught speeding while playing video games, cop crashes while watching porn and sword ratchetness. Rod and Karen respond to listener feedback. How many times have we heard "Can't Say I Remember No At Attin" through four episodes of the Skeleton Crew? It's almost like they wanted us to know there was something to it. While This is the Way Podcast made an educated guess to what would be the key to unlocking SM-33's memory, the planet name really was At Attin. The foreshadowing came from the "Jedi Mind Trick" or rather the "Fern Droid Memory Override" bit. Best to stand back when reprogramming murderous pirate sidekicks. Episode 4 of Skeleton Crew is not without weak spots. The Troik and Hattan on At Achrann may have modeled their military on the peacekeepers of the Old Republic. You're telling me the people on these planets have NEVER had someone exhibit some strange behaviors like pulling things to them in mid air, choking someone with their mind, or fooling their teachers with a wave of their hand? Maybe that's by design. The show is still enjoyable and there's still a chance the mystery is worth the speculating, but this was the first time the writing, pace, and story seemed off. It's not just original trilogy kids that feel that way, but our review podcast episode is the one you want to hear the opinions of a 2010s new Star Wars fan. Happy Friday, Geeky Stoics! I hope you all had a positive week. Today I've got a short reflection on Stoicism and emotion, and whether or not the two can co-exist. A popular criticism of the philosophy is that it's “cold” and “harsh”. I strongly disagree and will use Ahsoka from Star Wars as a case study in ‘stoic' as a character trait. First, two questions for you all. * Do you enjoy or make use of the Audio versions of our articles? Or do you listen to the Geeky Stoics podcast? It takes quite a bit of additional effort to produce and is time-consuming. Audio is one of my favorite parts of doing Geeky Stoics, but do you make use of it? * We have a new video up on YouTube that is in many ways the thesis statement of what Geeky Stoics is all about. Have you watched it yet? We'd love to see more readers Subscribe to the YouTube channel and leave comments, reactions, and feedback on the videos. Discussion is a goal of our community, and we'd love to hear from you and get more well-acquainted. Ahsoka the Stoic, Ahsoka the RockAhsoka has to be my favorite of all the recent Star Wars movies and shows. Having been an adolescent when the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series was playing on TV, I've grown up with Ahsoka Tano, the wartime padawan of Anakin Skywalker. I'm not surprised by the mixed response to the live-action show, where actress Rosario Dawson plays a grown-up Ahsoka, but I am a bit surprised by some of the complaints fans have expressed. Here are a few that stuck out: “Ahsoka is too stoic”, “Ahsoka is soulless” and “Ahsoka has no emotion”. In other words, “Ashoka should smile more” or something.'To be like the rock that the waves keep crashing over. It stands unmoved and the raging of the sea falls still around it.' -Marcus AureliusStar Wars fans have seen the other side of Ahsoka Tano when she was a Jedi pupil. Tano was an impulsive, bratty, brash, annoying, overly sensitive, and disrespectful young Jedi. She and Anakin were a perfect fit. Fast forward to the Ahsoka series and she is around 47 years old. Ahsoka has grappled with her choice to leave the Jedi Order, her guilt over its destruction, and the fall of Anakin Skywalker to evil. She watched the Empire rise and fall and Ahsoka even attempted to train Jedi padawans herself, such as Sabine Wren, with little success. Geeky Stoics is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.Ahsoka has a heaviness about her that is visible to anyone watching the show. At times you wonder, why isn't she blowing her lid right now or reacting in anger to this situation or that? When critics malign Ahsoka's temperament or the acting of Rosario Dawson as being devoid of emotion, what is really being criticized is the character's unwillingness to display what we all know she feels inside. Ahsoka doesn't emote like she used to as a child. Reflection is not repressionStoicism is most commonly criticized for being a cold and callous school of philosophy that encourages the repression of emotion. But it's not true. As writer and contemporary stoic Ryan Holiday put it on The Daily Show with Jordan Klepper, “There's a difference between being angry, and doing something out of anger.” There is an ocean between feeling anger and indignation over the foolishness of another person, and then “hitting Send on the email dressing them down for it.” Ahsoka has learned not to hit Send. I'm reminded of Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn in The Phantom Menace when he must negotiate with the junk dealer and slave owner, Watto, in order to get their starship repaired so Queen Amidala can be delivered to Naboo. Their mission is of massive consequence to the galaxy, and failure could mean political chaos in the Republic. Watto, not knowing this (and he wouldn't care either way), has the gall to resist Qui-Gon's “Jedi Mind Trick” and reject Republic currency for the spare parts they need. You know Qui-Gonn is furious. But he does not speak, he just observes Watto and forces out a visibly angry “smile” before walking away from the situation. Jinn could easily kill or subdue Watto and take what is needed. Jedi are not without emotion. Neither are the Stoics of our world, past and present.Stoics were awash in emotion. They had romantic relationships, they had children, and they were politicians confronting fear, suspicion, and doubt in their midst. The most enduring of the Stoics, Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, buried nine children in his lifetime. He buried his wife, Faustina. When his beloved tutor died, it is said that Aurelius sobbed uncontrollably. His stepfather, Antoninus, told the younger Marcus, “Neither philosophy nor empire takes away natural feeling.”Feelings are facts of life. It is a rare and dangerous few who walk this earth without them. Stoics fight not against their emotions, but for an understanding of where their emotions are coming from. They sit with their feelings. They search them for meaning. Ahsoka has learned how to do this, and for people accustomed to reactive behavior and emotive expression, it can be very offputting. If you think something is funny, why aren't you LOLing?! If you think something is sad, why aren't you crying or TELLING the world you're crying on social media? That's how those people think. If you live your life trying to meet their standard of emotive expression, you'll be constantly performing emotion in order to make them feel at ease. Don't do this. The Stoic treats emotion like a cloaked visitor who has knocked on their door. They open the door, greet the visitor, and ask them to reveal their identity before coming inside. Anger is often actually Fear, Disgust can stem from Confusion, and Joy sometimes becomes a lingering Sadness. We call that nostalgia or homesickness. When you learn to answer the door in this way, you're doing what the best Jedi do with their emotions. They are not suppressed, they are examined. When you take the time to examine your feelings, you'll be more like what everyday people call ‘stoic' in your character. Steady. Reliable. Patient. Sturdy. May the Force be with you. I'm traveling with my family to Mexico for two weeks this winter. The trip is a throwback to holidays from my childhood. Every other year, my family avoided the holidays altogether and traveled to Latin America. As a kid, I was sad to miss the holidays, but in retrospect those international trips were formative. This will be the first family trip in a decade and the first time with my nephews (7 and 10). Know why When I took a month-long trip with my mother to Ghana, I had to get very clear in the months leading up to the trip why I was going. And my purpose for taking the trip wasn't to have a great experience. Visiting Ghana was a lifelong dream of my mother's and a trip she wouldn't have attempted alone. My primary reason for going to Africa was to support her; to facilitate her having a positive experience. As you are heading into an experience with family, ask yourself why you are prioritizing spending time in this way: What are you hoping to get out of it? What do you want for your family members? The more clearly you know why, the better you will be at boundaries and making productive use of the time. Habit: Write down 10 different reasons “why” you are taking the action that you are. They won't all feel true, but you'll find something new through the exercise. There's no problem so big you can't walk away I use this phrase, which is oft repeated by a close friend, to remind myself that I have agency. We always have the ability to leave – even when it feels like we don't. It is something of a cardinal sin in my family to leave a conversation or issue unresolved. And yet I'm always calmer for stepping away for ten minutes and coming back to the issue later. Any of us is free to take a break or walk away at any time. Habit: Remind yourself, maybe even aloud, that “There's no problem so big I can't walk away.” Repeating that serves as a reminder that you are not stuck in a difficult situation. Take a pee break Years ago, a friend taught me the trick of taking a “pee break.” Maybe you actually need to use the toilet, but that's beside the point. The goal is that when you are upset you take a couple of minutes to reorient yourself and come back refreshed. Under very few circumstances is it considered socially inappropriate to take a couple of minutes out of a conversation “because I have to use the restroom.” And often you come back better able to handle whatever challenge has been going on. Habit: Practice “taking a pee break” when the stakes are low. During an otherwise unheated conversation say, “I'll be back in 2 minutes. I need to use the restroom.” The better you get at taking a break, the better you'll be able to when things get heated. Therapy with family I'm a proponent of facilitated conversation: therapy, coaching or anything else that works for you. In advance of our trip to Ghana, my mother and I went to therapy together. The objective was to create some guidelines about what we might expect while we were traveling in Africa, and how to collaborate better. My mother and I walked out of therapy with a new willingness to listen to each other, which led to a gentler trip in Ghana then might have happened otherwise. (It was still an intense experience!) Habit: Organize a facilitated conversation. It might not change anything, but it might also result in less drama. Family meetings We had regular family meetings growing up. Once every few weeks, our family of four would sit down and discuss challenges that had come up recently. I don't remember what got discussed, but “let's have a family meeting” remains my family's shorthand when communication is getting tough. Habit: Schedule a brief “family meeting.” The goal isn't to change anybody's behavior, but to create space for airing of grievances – so they don't bubble over at inopportune times. As I get ready to spend two weeks in close quarters with my family in Mexico, I know that I am going to need to practice a lot of these habits and tools. I hope that one of these habits is useful for you as you head into your own holiday plans. Until next time, Robin

Welcome back to Black Hoodie Alchemy, folks! This week we're going down a vast rabbit-hole of cult mentality, hip hop, new age metaphysics, heavy racism, classical conspiracy theories, and ancient alien pseudo-history! This is the story of cult leader and "inspirational" hip-hop figurehead "Dr. Malachi Z. York" AKA just Dwight York, who is not a real doctor. This man, through his own psychopathic charisma, started a cult offshoot of the Nation of Islam in the early 70s in Brooklyn, NY. But this steadily began to infuse all of the many ancient alien, white-devil-Illuminati, half-baked metaphysics of an un-learned wannabe scholar, and at a time where minorities were blatantly second-class citizens, Dwight York found his own culture to be easy predatory pickings. And as luck would have it for him, he happened to be forming his cult right at the daw of hiphop, in the very place that it was beginning. Because of this, he remained a lowkey figurehead in hiphop for some time, and in some cases continues to be to this day. Whether through direct affiliation or direct acknowledgements, York has brushed shoulders with people like Jay Z, Stevie Wonder, Andre 3000, Erica Badu, Nas, and many many more, including all the way into the features on Jedi Mind Tricks albums in the early Philly underground scene. York was also friends with Afrika Bambaata, an alleged sexual abuser and founder of the hiphop awareness movement called Universal Zulu Nation, which was known to heavily inspire groups like A Tribe Called Quest and others more. Now, does this mean that all these artists and musicians are terrible people directly affiliated with Bambaata and York? Not at all. Their allegations came out long after these psychopaths had staked their claim in their cultures, and they existed in a time before the internet, when information was much easier to compartmentalize. But all that being said, it is highly likely that at least some of these artists -- like Jay Z -- might have had connections that they have since tried to bury in order to save their public image. This is a complex web of African American culture, hip hop history, disturbing cult leader tactics, and so much more -- but it is not an indictment of hip hop or African American culture as a whole! Rather, this is an attempt to separate the wheat from the chaff, and remind us all that cult leaders and cult mentality can be found in all aspects of life, and that no one is immune.
