We continue the GangStarr Foundation Month talking about one of the most incredible albums of 1994: Jeru the Damaja's "The Run Rises in the East" with first time guest Rob Cave (fka Spec Boogie) of Lessondary Crew! We discuss the unorthodox beats from Premier that differed from his work with Guru, the unmistakable flows from Jeru, the unforgettable videos, and then unhinged rants on foods with gooey centers, the improbable success of Logic, and all of the revisions The Source made over the years to their 5 Mic ratings! You can find Rob's music here:https://robcavejr.bandcamp.com/musicIf you want exclusive content or wish to see the video of this episode you can become a Patreon member using the link below: https://www.patreon.com/calloutculturepodcastYou can find our music here:Zilla Rocca:https://5oclockshadowboxers.bandcamp.com/musicCurly Castro:https://curlycastro.bandcamp.com/album/little-robert-huttonhttps://shrapknel.bandcamp.com/Alaska:https://thatrapperalaska.bandcamp.com/

Brooklynite Jeru The Damaja is a rapper that practiced what he preached. Whilst dropping two iconic "All Killer, No Filler" albums of the 90s, he watched Hip-Hop go commercial and made a point to not get swayed. Instead, he continued as an independent voice and cultivate a dedicated fanbase that love him to this day.TIMESTAMPS:Weekly Music Roundup - (0:56)Ben:Denzel Curry - King of the Mischievous South Vol. 238 Spesh - Mother & GunCharlie:Awon & Phoniks - Golden Era 2OneDa - Formula OneDa (Drops October 4th)Enough Cereals - ImpulseDiamond D - THE DIAM PIECE 3: INITIUM 38 Spesh - Mother & GunKalisway - A Kid From TorontoThe Allergies - Freak The Speaker (Drops September 27th)Essosa - Essie's WorldTopic Intro/Ben's Research House - (12:41)The Sun Rises in the East - (18:18)Wrath of the Math - (25:32)Heroz4Hire - (34:39)Divine Design - (42:54)Still Rising - (48:17)Lighter Note - (57:20) Thanks for listening. Happy Born Day, Bash! 6 is the dopest number! So let's just start off by writing this. No one will probably ever see this truly brilliant and blessed episode of BK and AY doing their thang like no one's bizness. They laid it out perfectly for highlighting and gassing up the year's 1993 and 1994 in hip hop/rap. Brutal honest stories and reflections and sentiments and flash backs and relatable forwards.... The entire recipe cooked so well in this episode but unfortunately the powers that be are like HELL NO!!! No one can see this. Copy rights... WTF?!? Adui Yako and BK ain't ever tried to steal from no one or take anyone else's shine as or for their own. That's not the way big business sees it. WPI had been warned of the no play zone they entered with some of the selections they chose to share. And if these songs were played then a strict no question no see zone would immediately be implemented. And so it stands just as that right now. It's so bad that we don't even want to write the names of the songs or the groups that were played because that to might be for whatever reason a problem or some broken law/rule. Ridiculous but a potential fact. We Play It shares greatness for great reasons. The people and music that are played are seen only in the highest respect at WPI. WPI gives flowers to those they play and for some reason this is not being understood nor cared about by the powers to be. 1993 and 1994, you were the epitome of rap music and the standard set without ever being truly defined or needed to be. You turned young men into proud soldiers literally. You kicked open a door no one saw, no one believed should be there, and no one thought anyone else would walk through, but we all know now that was definitely not the case. Everyone is inside the room of rap now because of that door. Everyone! So many more that we played and that we didn't play. Thank you! Thank you for cementing hip hop and paving a way for all of us to build endless paths to wherever one may want or need to go. Hello friends and welcome back to BORP. For EP 53 Mickey and Tristan collectively accepted the demoralizing transition from summer to fall is in full swing. Mickey is handling this metamorphosis with the grace and dignity he is known for and Tristan is... coping. So really everyone is maturing. Moving onto the show, for our album pick (11:50) we listened to the 1996 snarling and pugilistic hip hop opus Wrath of the Math by Jeru The Damaja. For movie time with Tristan and Mick (1:18:20) we watched the psychedelic sci fi fantasy erotica of a trip, Heavy Metal. For New and Noteworthy (2:00:00) we check out some cool stuff from Cannons, Sassy 009, Stereolab, and Circuit des Yeux. For Three Questions for Tristan (2:22:03), Mickey makes Tristan channel his inner hair metal fan and really just a bunch of other weird stuff. Find the episode on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. You can also find our EP 53 playlist on Apple Music and Spotify. Thanks for listening, don't forget to rate & subscribe and follow our IG page @beatsonrepeatpod for more from the show.
Some of the best rappers out there are just that - rappers. Not every rapper you hear is a lyricist. When we first heard Kurupt on The Chronic, we knew this man was special. It's kind of fitting that his debut would be on Lyrical Gangbang. TIP is a bit selective with the guests we have on the show, but we love our lyricists. Whether it's Redman, Pharoahe Monch, Black Thought, KRS-One, Jeru The Damaja, Ras Kass or Roc Marciano, we don't want to just throw them a tribute, we want to pick their brain and extract those amazing stories as well. On episode 95, you'll get those amazing stories from Kurupt. He goes into great detail about the Death Row dynasty. We hear about Dre, Snoop, Daz, Nate and Pac. We also touch on topics most don't, such as his return to Death Row Records when everyone had jumped ship. We discuss the South Philly mob ties he had at Antra Records and why he took shots at A Tribe Called Quest. We get into just about everything and on top of that, we have 3 stellar mixes sandwiched in episode making sure they'll never be another Kurupt Tribute quite like this one. Welcome to Showcasing House Music DJ Mixes by dattrax!! Hello Fellow House Music Fanatics and Newcomers, welcome!! We are now also available in the Google Play Store's new podcast section, and are still in the iTunes podcast section. For both, just type in the search box, 'house music by dattrax' » you'll have access to almost 100 free house mixes whether you're on Android or iOS. BOOM! It's been the longest dry spell we've every had this past year for putting up our house mixes. Our apologies, however, we have not slowed down in buying more house tracks. We're junkies!! We've bought over 200 tracks in 5 separate batches from Traxsource and Beatport since the last mix was posted on our site. Been working on two mixes, which we believe you're going to LOVE. This mix, "Ritual Healing" has gone through probably at least eight versions >> each one had some parts that were really amazing and other parts that just sucked! It has been very frustrating, but accepted as part of our ritual of growing in love with new house tracks and only having a few hours a week these days. Most weekends, we listen to about 500+ tracks on Traxsource & Beatport in the late AMs. Jim, my best friend, DJ partner and fellow house fiend takes on tracks on Beatport and I take on Traxsource. So after about 2,000-2,500 tracks, I usually have about 90-130 tracks total in my virtual crate. Then over a few weekends, I'll dwindle that down to 30-40, then try to find a 15-20% discount code or sit on the crate till Traxsource emails a discount. Then buy, then listen to the tracks in traffic to and from my day job in Digital Marketing at a downtown Toronto agency. Then make a mix on a Sat. morning, shaking the whole house for hours (it's fantastic!!), and then listen to it for a few days. If it sucks, then it gets deleted and back to the drawing board we go the next Sat. It's such a healing ritual because I usually take all my life and work stress and pour it into each mix. In the process, hopefully putting mostly negative energy with some positive and transforming it into something beautiful. Sharing my favourite house tracks in the way that I want them to sound if I was dancing my ass off at a crystal clear and loud club sound system!! Julian Alexander is the founder of Brooklyn based design studio Slang, Inc. and has a rich history of artistic design within the music industry. We talked with Julian about his approach to design, the powerful work he's doing with the Supremacy Project, and heard stories about some of his past projects with artists such as Ghostface Killah, Jeru The Damaja, Nas, M.O.P., and Mobb Deep. Then we spoke about Julian's personal relationship with the platinum selling album Get Rich Or Die Tryin' and how working with 50 Cent has had a dramatic impact on Julian's career.

This week we dive into one of the best New York rap records ever with one of our favourite podcasts out there - Curly Castro, Alaska and Zilla Rocca bring the Call Out Culture podcast flavour to talk Jeru the Damaja’s 1994 classic ‘The Sun Rises in the East’
Not many have the Mental and Physical stamina to keep up with Jeru the Damaja. The BWBC crew goes deep into why 'Wrath of the Math' was so important for its time, and how just a few years later, Jeru's warning about the hip hop industry came true. They discuss Jeru's rugged Brooklyn style and how DJ Premier sets the mood for every artist he works with.
Whether you're an 80s baby or a 90s baby, this episode is for you. Whether you grew up on the Fat Boys or the Lost Boyz, this tribute is for you. D&D Studios is the most important studio in hip-hop history. Period. It's responsible for countless anthems such as Danger, Whutcha Want, Who Got Da Props, Ain't No Nigga, Jeeps, Lex Coups, Bimas & Benz, Ante Up and DWYCK to name a few. It's responsible for many classic albums like Illmatic, Ready To Die, Enta Da Stage, Livin' Proof, The Sun Rises In the East and Return of the Boom-Bap. Whether it was produced by DJ Premier, Da Beatminerz, DJ Muggs or mixed by Eddie Sancho or Norty Cotto, the D&D stamp was official. Doug Grama and David Lotwin created hip-hop mecca. A place where stars were born and GOATs were made. Today, we celebrate D&D Studios and we're joined by 1-half of the D's, Mr. David Lotwin. We go behind the scenes, hear the stories, re-live the classics and play all your favorite D&D cuts. We also have special guests stopping by to share stories like DJ Premier, Russell Peters, Jeru The Damaja, Mark The 45 King and Craig-G. You'll hear what it was like when DJ Premier was in the studio creating classic after classic. You'll hear stories about Biggie and how Puffy went ballistic after finding a gun while recording there. You'll get to hear what it was like recording Enta Da Stage, Return of the Boom-Bap, Illmatic and other classics You'll hear about pre-fame Jay-Z being denied at the door because there were too many people inside the studio at the time. You'll hear about the late, great Big L, Sean P, Ol' Dirty Bastard and Guru. On episode 71, we celebrate hip-hop. We celebrate history. We celebrate D&D Studios. www.takeitpersonalradio.com www.patreon.com/TakeItPersonal Follow us on Instagram @takeitpersonalradio

Episode 78 is our 4th anniversary special. After the crazy year we've all had, it felt right to end 2020 with a TIP celebration. We've produced over 23 episodes, close to 90 hours of content, including 7 tributes, 2 album spotlights and some pretty memorable, informative and occasionally contentious interviews with artists like R.A. The Rugged Man, The Beatnuts, Spice 1, Jeru The Damaja, Ras Kass, Shawn J. Period, Meyhem Lauren, Apathy and Black muthafuckin' Thought of The Roots Crew! Whether it was our 5-part 1995 Tribute, our 6+ hour MF Doom tribute, The Remix Show or Justice For George, we tried to keep you entertained in every conceivable way throughout this taxing year. As many of your already know, an awful lot goes into creating each episode. No disrespect to those who strictly do interview shows or hop on Instagram Live for an hour, but we try to produce each show like a movie. In addition to those marathon-like interviews we do, we curate the music from the finest of hip-hop ingredients. From the selections to the sequencing to the mixing to the samples, our goal is to provide you a product that you'll listen to, not once, not twice, but frequently. It's easy to put out content these days, but the average consumer chews it up and spits it out, only to be forgotten a week later. But in a year from now, when you want to remind yourself what 1995 was like, or if you want to suggest to a friend why Black Thought is the GOAT, or tell a friend why MF DOOM is one of the important rappers of the last two decades, you have our shows for that. When you want to re-live classic albums like Street Level or The Sun Rises In The East and learn things we've never heard before directly from the artists themselves, then you have our album spotlights for that. When you only want to hear the very best remixes or collaborations, we got you covered. We are a hip-hop library; A time capsule and ultimately the most complete hip-hop show you've heard since the great Stretch & Bob days. Michael Jackson called himself the King of Pop. Howard Stern calls himself the King of all Media. On Take It Personal, we call ourselves the King of all Tributes. No other podcast or radio show for that matter is doing what we're doing. Tonight is a celebration for sure. For just one episode, we decided to do something totally off-course. You're going to hear some of our FAVORITE joints from the 80s. We're talking Tears For Fears, The Clash, Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, Billy Idol, Pet Shop Boys, Naked Eyes, George Michael, Michael Jackson and much more. If you grew up in the 70s or an 80s baby like myself, you're going to love this show and play it over and over and over again! Thank you all for listening, supporting, and giving us a reason to produce the best hip-hop podcast we can make. Like the legendary Bret Hart says the best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be. Sincerely, Take It Personal Radio

Original Dirty Rotten Scoundrel himself, as we break down track-by-track on the masterpiece he created with DJ Premier. This is our 2nd album spotlight episode, so what better way to continue the trend than with The Sun Rises in the East? In typical TIP fashion, we interview Jeru for over two hours, as he shares some amazing stories about both Guru and Preem. Like our Street Level tribute, we play the album tracks in their entirety as we weave in and out with insightful stories about making this album. Without the use of paper there would be no mokuhanga. Washi has played an indelible position in the world of the Japanese print. Many artists in mokuhanga use washi for their prints and as The Unfinished Print is a podcast dedicated to the workings of mokuhanga I felt it was necessary to interview an expert in all things washi. Nancy Jacobi has worked tirelessly in promoting the use of washi in her life through her company and store The Japanese Paper Place, here in Toronto. She has lectured on the subject, as well as educated many about the possibilities of washi. In this episode of The Unfinished Print Nancy helps me understand how important washi is to many artists, its history, and how it needs to be saved. follow The Unfinished Print and my work on Instagram @popular_wheatprints, Twitter @unfinishedprint, or email me at theunfinishedprint@gmail.com Show Notes: all links are hyperlinked. Inuit printmaking - The Inuit are an Arctic group of indigenous peoples located in Canada, Greenland, and the US state of Alaska. They have a tradition of printmaking beginning in the 1950's, as introduced by administrator John A. Houston (1921-2005),who according to The Canadian Encyclopedia, studied in Japan for a few months under print artist Un'ichi Hiratsuka (1895-1997) Today, there is a rich history of printmaking from the Inuit people. Artscape, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and others have been working with artists in Toronto for years. The Paper Place Trinity Bellwoods Park is a 16 hectare park located in and around Queen Street and Dundas Streets in Toronto. It's an important park for many students, artists, hipsters, and bohemians. Once used by the University Of Toronto with the building of Trinity College in the mid 19th century, the college had been demolished in the 1950's much like many architecturally important buildings in Toronto at that time, and currently. There ain't too many MCs who are equally as passionate about craft beer, so when Cee connected with J/o/e for the "Hazy (Dope & Dank Remix)" back in 2017, it was a rare moment. Hailing from Fort Worth, Texas, J/o/e has been active for a decade and a half, and today (Tuesday October 27th), he drops his latest project, the "4 Pack" EP. We got into J/o/e's background coming up in Texas as an MC, how his sound changed through each project and how he discovered craft beer. He stayed on to run through the Tory Lanez and Megan Thee Stallion update, Adele on Saturday Night Live, the T.I. and Jeezy #Verzuz battle on November 19th, and Bandcamp's fee waiving again on Friday November 6th. Our Year In Review show features our favorites joints from 2018. It's our longest episode ever, so you might have to limit your consumption to an hour a day for the next week or so. We break down our favorite albums, we hand-out our MVP awards to the best rapper and producer of the year and play armchair A&R suggesting some of our dream collabos. We also have the man who absolutely bodied all his '18 features and has created quite the buzz for himself lately, Pharoahe Monch. Pharoahe shares with us his favorite albums and collabos of ‘18 and what's in store for 2019. And since we were in the super group mindset, Pharoahe tells us some funny stories about the short-lived Psychic Friends featuring himself, Black Thought, Common and Jeru The Damaja. Episode 9 might be titled the Calm Before The Storm, but it's anything but. Our next show will be a DJ Premier tribute, so we wanted to take a short break from the tributes and get back to the traditional potpourri show. Special guest, Aaron Wade, sat in with us as we discussed and dissed each other's Hip-Hop Mount Rushmore. We also announced the winner of our Evolution of The B-Boy Sticker pack contest and play some ridiculously dope music from Mobb Deep, Jeru The Damaja, Brand Nubian, Kool G. Rap, Gang Starr, Ice Cube, Das EFX, People Under The Stairs, Insight, J-Zone and Supastition. Plus, we threw in some new jawns by King Magnetic, Kendrick Lamar and a special K-Def/DJ 360 Beneficence remix. So, while you're listening. think of who you'd put on your Mount Rushmore and then share your picks with us in the comment section. RIP Don Rickles!
