On this flashback of Take It Personal, we're hitting you with a combined remastered version of episodes 29 & 30, our Native Tongues Tribute. This 12+ hour episode features music from the most important, and influential hip-hop collective we've ever seen. With the help and hustle of both DJ Red Alert and Chris Lighty, the Native Tongues were a force to be reckoned with. The Jungle Brothers paved the way for groups like De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest and Black Sheep. Prior to The Flava Unit, Queen Latifah was this crew's Den mother. Along with her protege Monie Love, they were both instrumental in helping the female movement in hip-hop. The Native Tongues provided plenty of classic albums, countless anthems and produced more offspring than Joe Jackson. The Natives helped jumpstart the careers of Busta Rhymes, Chi-Ali, Mos Def, J Dilla and have influenced artists such as Brand Nubian, K.M.D., Common, The Beatnuts, Bush Babees, The Roots, Slum Village, Little Brother, Kanye West, Black Star, Pharrell, Hieroglyphics, The Pharcyde, J5, Kedrick Lamar, Pusha T, Andre 3000 and even Nas. They've influenced everyone! The Native Tongue brand was strong despite some internal conflict, growing pains and different career paths. They left an everlasting impression on hip-hop. It's our privilege to present to you our Native Tongues Tribute! www.takeitpersonalradio.com www.patreon.com/TakeItPersonal

On this flashback of Take It Personal Radio, we're hitting you with a remastered version of episode 32, our Pharoahe Monch Tribute. This 5 1/2 hour episode was recorded in 2018 and is now remastered in celebration of the 30th anniversary of Stress: The Extinction Agenda. We felt it was not only necessary, but equally important to do a tribute in honor of one of the greatest lyricists hip-hop has had. Additionally, what would a Take It Personal tribute be without the man of the hour stopping by to share some stories? We talk Paul C., Extra P, and even Kool Keith. We find out what it was like being passed on by Russell Simmons (along with Nas) and signing with Disney. We break down the Stress: Extinction Agenda album cover. We touch on his relationship with O.C. and the fact he thought the Time's Up beat was pretty wack. We talk Rawkus, ghostwriting for Puffy, sampling, sports, what went wrong on The Equinox; yes, we went there. We asked everything and he answered everything, including the possibility of an OK reunion. We also have 86 tracks displaying the brilliance of Pharoahe Monch. If you haven't heard this episode before or need a refresher, tap in because this one is TIP classic material. www.takeitpersonalradio.com www.patreon.com/TakeItPersonal
Most times in life we take certain comments or actions personal. I think you have to combat that with having confidence in self. knowing who you are and what you bring to the world. The one thing I have learned is that not everyone is going to like when you shine your light.
On this flashback of Take It Personal Radio, we're hitting you with a remastered version of episode 50, our Hieroglyphics Tribute. This was a mammoth one. We've got special guests Slug, Murs, Apathy, J-Zone, The Grouch & Breakbeat Lou stopping by. We interview Del, Domino, Casual & Tajai and they've got stories for days! Del talks about doing shrooms with Q-Tip to Casual freestyling with Pharoahe Monch at the Gavin. We touch on Casual vs. Saafir and the impact it had on battle rap. We unfortunately find out Ice Cube wasn't a fan of Gang Starr and thought Kool Keith was too weird. Del explains what it was like not only being cousins with Ice Cube, but their musical similarities and his involvement earlier on in his career. We learn about Del's feelings towards the Gorillaz, while Domino breaks down just about every Hiero collaboration imaginable. We talk I Wish My Brother George Was Here, '93 Til Infinity, No Need For Alarm, Fear Itself, Like It Should Be and No Man's Land. We discuss their rap dominance prior to being dropped by the label. Tajai's breaks down his feelings towards the group's sophomore album and the importance of each album sounding different. This episode can be a slow burn or a fast one, but we all know Hiero is til infinity! www.takeitpersonalradio.com www.patreon.com/TakeItPersonal

Navigating the World of Book Reviews: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: Whether good, bad, or ugly, book reviews are all part of the writing journey. It's natural to feel affected by them, but don't let them define your worth or derail your passion. Remember, reviews are subjective reflections of individual tastes and experiences. Most importantly, you keep writing, learning, and improving.
Chances are you listen to Take It Personal because you're stuck in the golden era. But every once in a while, we feel it's our responsibility to put a spotlight on today's music. On episode 154, we're do all of the heavy lifting to help you diversify your bonds, like GZA. We'll always be a 90's centric show at heart, but some of us are really stuck in the past and we feel you might be missing out on some great music, especially from the independent artists out there. We've got new music from Godfather Don, Ka, High & Mighty, Blu, Vic Spencer. Mickey Diamond, Rahim Samad, Truth By Design, Vice Souletric, Recognize Ali, Kurious, Diamond D, Awon & Phoniks, Paradox & DJ Sean P, Apathy, ALYX Ryon & Jumbled to name a few. Maybe even some Pete & Bas if you keep listening to the very end (hint, hint). On this flashback of Take It Personal Radio, we're hitting you with a remastered version of our Black Thought Tribute combing both episode 68 and 69, including our exclusive Black Thought interview. Black Thought isn't just one of our favorites, he is arguably the greatest living rapper in the game. And despite where he might be on your top list, there is no doubt that after you listen to our Black Thought Tribute, he'll be bumped up in your ranking. We discuss the Streams of Thought albums. We discuss working with Danger Mouse and the late Kobe Bryant, as well as the upcoming musical he wrote and will be starring in titled "Black No More". We find out if there's a new Roots album on it's way, delve into some Roots stories such as Malik B, Razhel, getting signed to Geffen and what the "actual" release date was for "Do You Want More?!!!??!". We talk Philly, food, classic hip-hop and much, much more. We recorded this prior to the passing of Malik B. www.takeitpersonalradio.com www.patreon.com/TakeItPersonal Follow us on Instagram @ takeitpersonalradio
On this flashback of Take It Personal Radio, we're hitting you with a remastered edition of Episode 67, our album spotlight on the timeless Beatnut's classic Street Level. It's been 4 years since we recorded this episode and our feelings about this album haven't changed a bit. We got to relive this classic album track-by-track with special guests Al' Tariq aka Kool Fashion and Psycho Les. We speak to Al Tariq first and later Les joins with his own perspective. Then, in typical Take It Personal fashion, and we reunite these two guys for the first time in many, many years. In '94, we became immune to classic releases because they were dropping weekly. Street Level isn't just a classic album, it's damn near perfect, front to back. The production is some of the finest you'll ever hear, too. While The Nuts went on to have greater success as a duo with chart-topping hits such as Off The Books and Watch Out Now, their energy and wit always seemed the best when they were a trio. We released both stand-alone interviews of Al' Tariq and Psycho Les on our Vevo (Youtube) channel, as they discuss their solo ventures, Junkyard Juju, the reintroduction of Big Pun, J-Lo stealing their beat, plus life after The Nuts. There's even a discussion about a possible reunion. On this flashback of Take It Personal Radio, we're hitting you with episode 19, our Atmosphere Tribute. Over the past few decades, Atmosphere has been touring the globe, making music, making fans and one member, especially, making babies. Hailing outta Minneapolis, Slug and Ant aren't just a group, they're Minnesota Nice! The slept-on beatmaker and storyteller have accumulated copious amounts of success throughout the years, so it was time Take It Personal took you on a tribute trip down Atmosphere lane. We cover the classics, the obscure, fan favorites and even some collaborations. We promise you, there will never be another Atmosphere tribute quite like this one. To further cement that, we invited Slug on the show to break bread with us. The 2-part interview plays throughout this 4+ hour tribute show. We delve into a different side of Sean Daley. We talk family, friends, critics touring, Soundset, DJ Premier and some crazy stories like the time Rick Rubin was courting them. When you think Minnesota musicians, you immediately think of Prince, The Time, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, and probably Bob Dylan, but after this show, we have to think Atmosphere will be right there with them. www.takeitpersonalradio.com www.patreon.com/TakeItPersonal Follow us on Instagram @takeitpersonalradio
On this flashback of Take It Personal Radio, we're hitting you with our DJ Premier interview. We had Preemo on the show early on when we did our Prodigy tribute, but he returned to the show to discuss the latest Gang Starr album. We talk plenty about Guru, their relationship, the misunderstandings and the family bond. We get into the collabos with Nas, Pete Rock, De La Soul, Q-Tip, Bun B and K-Rino. We discuss the artists featured on One of The Best Yet, as well as those who weren't on the album but felt they should be. There was nothing off-limits and DJ Premier opened about Solar like we've never heard before. Of course, we had to have a little fun, so, we made Preem choose his best work outta Livin' Proof, The Sun Rises In The East or Hard To Earn. This was a great discussion with the GOAT. www.takeitpersonalradio.com Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/TakeItPersonal

We're starting to remaster older shows and present them as 1 episode as opposed to breaking them up into parts, like they were originally been released as. On this flashback of episode 54, we give you over 5+ hours of one of the greatest hip-hop battles of all-time, Nas vs. Jay-Z. We knew when making this that it had to be special. It had to be something unlike we've ever witnessed before, even though the battle took place nearly decades ago. It was important to re-create the magic and the memories and celebrate two of the most decorated veterans in hip-hop. This epic episode plays like a Scorsese film. But, unlike most films, this gladiator battle has 4 acts. Each battle is carefully curated to bring out the best in each opponent. We found a way to breathe new life into this battle of rap dominance and New York supremacy. Whether you're Team Nas or Team Jay-Z, we guarantee you moments where you'll feel conflicted, startled and even celebratory. www.takeitpersonalradio.com Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/TakeItPersonal
We could write-up a colorful description to entice you to listen, but we're talking about Redman. If you know how Take It Personal does interviews, you know we cover just about everything. On episode 151, we're teleporting back to 1995. If you had a 5-disc CD changer in the whip, chances are you had Dah Shinin' in one of those slots. Tek and Steele announced their presence with authority on Enta da Stage in '93, then dropped the classic Bucktown b/w Let's Git It On single in early '94, which had everyone patiently waiting for their album. In January '95, the wait was over and Dah Shinin' immediately became a favorite. With their witty harmonizing 1-2 punch, along with the Da Beatminerz, Dah Shinin' was classic upon first listen and the birth of what we now know as the Boot Camp Clik. We're joined by General Steele, as we go track-by-track with him on Dah Shinin'. Learn all about your favorites, whether it's Timz 'n' Hood Chek, Sound Bwoy Bureill, Bucktown, Hellucination, Let's Git It On or Cession at da Doghillee. Steele shares intimate details about the making of every track, including the remixes and some non-album cuts. Steele also shares some hilarious and fascinating stories about recording @ D&D Records, Buckshot, Sean Price, working with Mary J. Blige and of course Tupac Shakur. On episode 149, we're honoring this 1993 musical masterpiece. This classic ATCQ album embodies everything that made us me fall in love with hip-hop. It was pure perfection. An absolute game changer and the album that helped usher in the 2nd golden era. Like what we've recently done with Paul's Boutique, we strip this album completely and build it back using original samples in true TIP fashion. We reproduce this classic that'll allow you to hear this album in a whole new way. Get ready to relive 1993 all over again. Every once in a while, an interview turns more into a conversation amongst rap dudes. We anticipated having Rapper Big Pooh and Phonte for just 45 minutes, so when I tell you the interview lasted 2 hours and 30 minutes, it tells you just how funny and relatable these guys are to talk to. We covered an awful lot, yet it wasn't nearly enough once it was over. We discuss the May the Lord Watch documentary, their love for Beck or Bjork and their hate for Sci-Fi and its magical white people. We touch on their ridiculous stretch of music that ultimately burnt them out. We get into the brilliance of Curb Your Enthusiasm, Ice Cube's Death Certificate, which is better Low End Theory or Midnight Marauders, and Dominican broads making chili con queso. We also talk Ghostface, Murs, Common, The Roots, Evidence, Kendrick Lamar and their affection for Outkast. I saw a great quote the other day and it said, "If Wu-Tang is for the kids, Little Brother is for the ones that raise them." Thanks to Rapper Big Pooh, Phonte, Andre Barnes and our longtime homie, I.D. for the idea. Stay tuned as we prepare to drop our Little Brother tribute in early March. Enjoy the discussion. www.takeitpersonalradio.com www.patreon.com/TakeItPersonal Follow us on Instagram @takeitpersonalradio
