Video animation by: Big Flowers Intro/Outro beat by: BLOODBLIXING The Plug (0:44). The Interview (2:28). I love rap because not every collab needs to “make sense” on first glance. As long as the artists in question are on the same page artistically, know their strengths, and are willing to take risks and compromise when needed, the results can be great. This is precisely what we get with today's guests, Uncommon Nasa and Guilty Simpson, on their latest collaborative album, Escalation. As highly respected veterans in their respective hometown hubs of hip-hop, they possess a strong connection as it relates to their perspectives on the craft, and how they approach making music. In today's episode, this dynamic duo talks about key lessons they learnt from their careers (involving legendary artists like Dilla, Sean Price, and the original Def Jux crew), their artistic development, the Detroit hip-hop sound really, and the creation of their latest musically exhilarating collaborative album, Escalation. Current era of rap vs. pre-internet era of rap (3:32). Mainstream hip-hop scene (22:11). Key lessons Nasa learnt from his early days working on Def Jux projects (30:55). The Detroit hip-hop sound (46:02). It Was Written > Illmatic??? (49:55). Nasa's experience mastering engineering, producing, and rapping (53:45). How Sean Price inspired Guilty (57:53). The sound of Escalation (1:04:23). How Guilty was challenged as an MC on Escalation (1:22:45). Primary lyrical themes of Escalation (1:29:12). Upcoming music / merch / tour dates (1:35:46). Yo what's up this is toru and in a way so are you. For those of you who don't know me, I'm a music producer, artist, and entrepreneur.I make music for that space between the dance floor and the bedroom, which, as of this moment, I am grateful to say has been streamed millions of times and licensed by brands big and small, including companies like Apple.I believe that regardless of what you produce, whether it be music, art, physical goods, or even spreadsheets, you have a process, whether you know it or not.To explore this further, I created The ProducerHead Podcast.ProducerHead is a place to have conversations with Producers about their experience and process to share what works and what doesn't. To help each of us learn and improve our own processes.Today's guest is Brooklyn-based Cryptic One, a rapper, producer, drum programmer / finger drummer extraordinaire, and honestly a legend in his own right. If you had told a younger me that I'd be talking to this man in this context, there's no way I would have believed you. He's a member of the Atoms Family. He's released music through Def Jux.Has credits with artists that include Aesop Rock, Cannibal Ox, and others I'm definitely missing.AndIf that weren't enough, Cryptic One just received a Billboard plaque for the Lloyd Banks track “Dead Roses,” which he produced.Today is part two of the incredible conversation with Cryptic One, a Brooklyn-based rapper and producer. If you already listened to part one, then you already know and are ready to strap in for more. If you haven't already heard part 1 of this interview, I highly recommend you check it out.

In the late 90s Antipop Consortium took the experimental NYC hip hop scene by the neck. Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!Absolute hip hop perfection this episode as Pip has a proper full length chat with rapper/producer/composer - or for brevity’s sake, half of Run The Jewels - El-P!Whether you’re familiar with El-P from his way back underground (dare I say ‘indie rap’) days of Company Flow alongside Bigg Jus and Mr Len, and of course the label Def Jux (including his sonic architecture of the Cannibal Ox album), or his solo work wearing many hats per album – OR – his present work alongside Killer Mike as 50% of Run The Jewels, you will get a ton out of this. Obviously RTJ talk is discussed, but as a fan, Pip goes in deep for the true heads and gets the background info from El’s days (bad memory not withstanding) hustling the Tower Records mailout system, freestyling on the Stretch & Bobbito show, the Rawkus days, collabos, producing for self and as a team, taking on difficult projects to get out of conventions, “delving into water”, and scoring films (like the forthcoming 'Capone'). Oh and also releasing an eerily prescient 4th RTJ album during a pandemic. If you’re familiar with El-P’s work over the years or have listened to Fantastic Damage more than a few times, you’ll understand that a pandemic is probably the perfect time for an El-related project. Skip to the 6 minute mark to bypass my chatter in the beginning. Rawkus Records when I was growing was a big deal to me. Record labels like Rawkus, Stones Throw, Def Jux and more let me know that I potentially be not just be an admirer of hip hop but also a participant. Growing up in Ypsilanti, Mi a stone's throw away from Detroit, MI, Eminem coming out of Michigan was a big thing to me. You also have to take into consideration that a good majority of the music I was listening to came from napster or FYE. This was big a moment but one of the moments that solidified his greatness to me was his song Any Man that I had found. That later pushed me into the likes of Mos Def, Pharaoh Monch, Wordsworth, Talib Kweli and so many more. Listen to some of the selection of the records and make sure to hit me on twitter and let me know what you liked, would of wanted to hear in the set. Thanks for your support! Like what you hear? This episode features El-P: one half of Run the Jewels, founder of Def Jux, relentless artist settling into his next act. He’s the most popular he’s ever been, and the most thoughtful. But as the sunset approached Wilshire, another darkness enveloped our surroundings: the death of the young. The air of that day permeated all of our discussion: surveillance, collective grieving, and losing oneself in process to find oneself again. In other news: new information on RTJ4, completed days before the recording.

We picked obscure cuts all the way to classics heard from the late 90s to the early 00s. We got everybody from Mos Def, Company Flow, MF Doom, Murs, Planet Asia, J-Live, Juggaknots, Weatherman, Saukrates, Jigmastas, Cannibal Ox, L-Fudge, Godfather Don, All Natural, Non-Phixon, Cage, Latryx, Mr. Voodoo, K-Otix, and Vakill to name a few. You don't want to miss this!

My guest this week is Uncommon Nasa. He’s an MC, a producer, an engineer, a radio host and the guy behind Uncommon Records. We first met when he took part in the NYC Rap Round Robin. He talks about getting his start interning at NYC’s Ozone Studios, and later mixing many key projects for Def Jux artists. He tells me about his love for 90’s NYC hip-hop radio, and how that influenced his Uncommon Radio show. We discuss his new projects, and his recent drive to tour and to grow as a live performer. Mike Riley’s art this week is an homage to 3rd Bass’s The Cactus Album. This episode is hosted by splicetoday.com.

We take it back to the essence with this episode. Just Singodsuperor and The Almighty A.R. with no guests. This episode starts with us reflecting on the trajectory of the podcast so far, then goes to a story from Singodsuperior with him leading to an explanation of his name. From there we get into breaking down Hip-Hop from the year 2000 until now (including Wale, Kanye West, Cam'ron, Juelz Santana, the Diplomats, Kid Cudi, Drake, Futute, Def Jux, Bad Boy, Fetty Wop, and more). Our conversation then takes a turn and gets into more scientific topics such as evolution, religion, space, the universe, the multiverse, mathematics, Star Trek, movies, MMA, and so much more.
