Shottie on Miami Hip-Hop and His JourneyIn this episode of Florida Sound Archive, we're joined by Miami rapper Shottie for a deep dive into his journey through hip-hop, from his earliest beginnings to what's next.Born in the Dominican Republic and later moving to New York City, Shottie shares how the passing of his father ultimately brought him to Miami, where he grew up in the Kendall area. He reflects on first discovering hip-hop through DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince and the classic track Parents Just Don't Understand, before diving deeper into the culture with artists like Redman, Wu-Tang Clan, and Naughty by Nature. We also explore his discovery of Miami hip-hop pioneers including Trick Daddy, JT Money, 2 Live Crew, Mother Superior, Mr. Mic Rippa, and DJ Craze, and how learning about their work gave him a broader perspective on Miami hip-hop and its place within the larger culture.Shottie walks us through starting to rap in high school under his original stage name Deadshot, performing early shows at the Cameo Theater (Miami Beach) and the Chili Pepper (Coconut Grove), and forming the group IDEE4, which made the leap to Los Angeles before ultimately returning to South Florida six months later. We get into his creative process, including his approach to recording, collaborating with producers and rappers locally and internationally, developing album artwork, and the sonic and cinematic influences that shape his projects. Shottie also reflects on performances in Orlando, New York City, Fort Wayne, and Toronto, and what lies ahead in terms of touring and new music.

"We as a society are guilty of turning a blind eye to the ongoing sexism and exploitation of women that is blatantly displayed in Hip Hop. You see, I love Hip Hop, but does Hip Hop love me?" - A Conscious Sista'. Misogyny is fundamentally defined as hatred and violence towards women. This "violence" is not limited to physical aggression; it extends to actions that make women feel uncomfortable, hostile behavior, harassment, and other things that cause hurt and trauma.• Misogynoir: When this hatred and violence are directed explicitly towards black women, it is referred to as Misogynoir. Biggie, The Great Frank White spit lyrics that demeaned women. Did he hate women? Does Hip-Hop hate women? Get On Code! This episode of Prof. Kimya's class focuses on misogyny within hip-hop culture, particularly examining the works of artists such as Biggie Smalls. Can hip-hop be revolutionary while simultaneously exhibiting misogynistic and homophobic elements, questioning the industry's power structures and the roles of both male and female artists? The conversation extends to how misogyny is perpetuated through lyrics and consumer expectations, touching upon historical contexts of sexualized content in media and the challenges of creating cultural change within the music industry. We need solutions for addressing misogyny in hip-hop, beyond mere boycotts, by fostering critical engagement, supporting local artists, and challenging deeply ingrained power dynamics.Yep. In this episode, we take it way back! Join me and my friends Tito, Marc X, Arkatak, Pooh Heff, and Groove as we answer the question: "What were some Hip-Hop related things to do in El Paso back in the '80s and '90s?" We swap stories about the legendary Breaking Boundaries battles, crossing over to Juarez to party at Old West, and copping Kung-Fu flicks (and more) from Brotha Lee's. We also reminisce about partying at the All Graders Club on Fort Bliss, dancing at Teen Expo, and the classic hangouts at Castle Park. Plus, no trip down memory lane would be complete without shouting out One World Style — where digging for vinyl was a rite of passage. Whether you lived it or just want to know what it was like, this episode is full of the real memories that made the El Paso Hip-Hop scene special. Tap in!

In this installment, we skip through my favorite MC's of all time. Some were left off, Andre 3000 had a solid feature last episode, ASAP Rocky's Live Love A$AP mixtape was a staple of my young adulthood. Both were not featured this episode among others, I'm sure the Boom Bap will make a comeback to fill out the roster. What an incredible run from Jay Electronica. This installment was mostly vinyl. The Eternal Sunshine portion of Jay Elect and the Fred Again features at the end were the only non-vinyl features which when you think about it.. Pretty disgusting. E-40 Yay Area, Paul Wall, Mike Jones, Curren$y, Jay Elect, Earl Sweat and Action Bronson all on vinyl. That's a bing bong and a half. Thank you, as always, for being here.
