Neil Drumming is a man of many talents. He has worked as a journalist, radio/podcast producer, and writer/director. And now he can add "rapper" to that list. Sorta. Neil joined us to explain why he doesn't really think of himself as a rapper, despite having recently released his debut rap album "Writing on Airplanes". We discussed the ideas and process behind the album and then talk about Neil's album pick for this episode - "A Book of Human Language" by Aceyalone. Seemed like a good moment to salute the city of LA, a city I never thought I'd end up residing in as a kid but where I now live and don't plan on leaving. A huge city, where horrible fires and climate change have destroyed the homes of thousands of people including some of those featured on this mix. If you are looking to support folks in need, check out: mutualaidla.org/ I recorded this mix live on Twitch, totally unplanned and a bit rough but fun, might try and do that more often this year? We'll see. Thanks as always for tuning in! Tracklist: Elusive ft. Aceyalone, will.i.am, People Under the Stairs, Warren G, Warren G, Vooodu ft. Meen Green, Funkdoobiest ft. While Christmas in Los Angeles brings sunshine instead of snowflakes, Angelinos can still enjoy holiday festivities—particularly the music. In today's podcast episode, graffiti artist Man One and filmmaker VONJAKO join host Scott “Sourdough” Power to discuss the creative journey behind the music video for “Christmas in L.A.,” a unique hip-hop holiday track celebrating the vibrant culture of LA. Released by Crewest Studio as a tribute to the city, the song features a powerhouse lineup of LA-based emcees, including Aceyalone, 2Mex, Medusa, and Myka 9, along with members from Grammy-winning band Ozomatli. Produced by Dan Ubick of Danube Productions, “Christmas in L.A.” stands out as a rare addition to holiday music, infusing traditional festivities with the city's iconic hip-hop roots. The episode delves into the challenges of the music video's production, highlighting the creative decisions that brought a fresh perspective to Santa Claus's portrayal—reimagined as a graffiti artist. Man One and VONJAKO discuss the importance of collaboration, emphasizing how working with local talent contributes to an authentic representation of LA culture. They reflect on the joys and trials encountered during filming, reinforcing the significance of storytelling in art and the shared experience of creating with limited resources. Listeners will hear insights about the joy of authenticity in the creative process and the unexpected adventures that arise when artists engage deeply with their surroundings. The episode invites audiences to appreciate the music and the stories behind it, capturing the essence of the holiday spirit in a city famously devoid of snow. As "Christmas in L.A." gains traction on platforms like Spotify and Apple Music, this podcast is a crucial companion piece, illuminating the artistic spirit that defines LA's unique seasonal celebrations. For more information, please visit https://notrealart.com/christmas-in-los-angeles-music-video

Yo yo yo, we're back on it with a BANG this week - yes, we dig into the return of Kendrick Lamar
We love talking about creative process, and with RJD2 - we thoroughly explored his mindset and approach to creating & producing music. He is an accomplished musician, DJ & producer whose original tracks for a collaborative rap album somehow became the theme song for Mad Men! LIke many of us, he has great interest in other aspects of art & design from the MCM time period which we covered, most uniquely - Italian Carrozzerias! Despite using many samples & sounds to produce his music - he records many of them himself, with analog processes and equipment… which is how his tracks capture such an incredible warmth and atmosphere. Come feel that warmth in his conversation with Ramble Jon Krohn. This episode is dedicated to actor Robert Morse, who so elegantly portrayed Betram Cooper in Mad Men.

This week we delve into the legacy of Aceyalone's seminal album All Balls Don't Bounce on its 25th anniversary. After that we have dual interviews with the members of new group Small Bills. Producer The Lasso, whose work you may know from collaborations with Lando Chill, Chris Orrick and Psypiritual, is a multi-instrumentalist with restless creativity who has crafted a new sound for Elucid on this project. Elucid, one of the best MCs in the world right now, has an extensive solo catalog and is a member of groups Armand Hammer, Nostrum Grocers, and now Small Bills. This project finds Elucid exploring new sonic territory displaying the same high level lyricism we've come to expect from him. Small Bills' debut, Don't Play It Straight, will be released on Mello Music Group on Friday October 30th. DBRP is a proud member of the Stony Island Audio podcast network
For nearly two decades, producer/musician RJD2 has put his own unique spin on the genre of instrumental hip hop. RJ's music has always been a compelling listen, with or without vocals – but he's also collaborated with a gang of artists, including rapper Blueprint (under the Soul Position moniker), as well as projects with singer Aaron Livingston (pka Son Little) and underground legend Aceyalone. Along the way, RJ has produced songs for commercials and TV shows – in fact, an instrumental of one of his songs was used as the theme to AMC's smash hit show 'Mad Men.' RJ's most recent project is 'The Fun Ones,' released on his own record label RJ's Electrical Connections. Songs we explore in this episode: "Indoor S'mores" ('The Fun Ones', 2020) "A Beautiful Mine" ('Magnificent City', 2006) "Wander" (Icebird 'The Abandoned Lullaby', 2011) "Someday" ('The Third Hand', 2007) "The Stranger" ('The Colossus', 2010) "Ring Finger" ('Since We Last Spoke', 2004) "Saboteur" feat Phonte Coleman ('Dame Fortune', 2016) RJD2: www.rjd2.net instagram.com/seandammit twitter.com/seandammit instagram.com/thequestionshiphop Email: cantknocktheshuffle@gmail.com Learn more about your ad choices. We're joined by DJ and master of the turntable Cut Chemist. Born Lucas McFadden, Cut Chemist is best known for co-founding the iconic underground hip-hop group Jurassic 5. He'll tell us about "Park Bench People" by Freestyle Fellowship. The Fellowship was a boundary-defying underground crew fronted by MC's Myka 9 and Aceyalone. Find out how the song changed Cut Chemist's idea of what hip-hop could be. When he joined us in 2018, he had just released his first record in over a decade. Die Cut is available now.

Every year we try to do a special episode for Thanksgiving and this year we landed on the theme of stories. We are all storytellers in some regard, and each DBRP co-host picked a song to tell a personal story about. Nate talks about his family through the lens of Action Bronson’s “9-24-11,” Dave reminisces about a particularly fruitful time in his career by discussing Lord Shafiq’s “My Mic Is On Fire,” and Demone recounts a personal and somewhat tragic tale revolving around Aceyalone’s “Book Of Human Language.” We are very grateful for all of our listeners, the community that has formed around the show, and the artists and writers who have joined us as guest. Happy Thanksgiving from the Dad Bod Rap Pod family to yours.
Episode 14 of Desert Island Album, talking About Indie Hip hop Record, Aceyalone's Book of Human Language with my guest James Kirkpatrick Thesis Sahib!
Although he was first heard touring with west coast legends like Aceyalone, Abstract Rude, and the Hieroglyphics crew, Bukue One's name reached another level when he became the manager of Del the Funky Homosapien. Through his unique experience as a graffiti writer, skateboarder, and marketer, he was able to help further solidify Del's impact on the culture by forming partnerships with brands in a way that hadn't been seen before in independent hip-hop. In this episode, Blueprint is joined by Bukue One for an in depth conversation about his history in hip-hop, selling water filters, merch for Hiero, managing Del, and ultimately forming his unique business that connects brands and artists with similar interests. Let's go!

BANG! @southernvangard #radio Ep213! Quick turn this week from our last episode as we were a little late out of the gate last week. This week finds us with a longer than usual mix as our interviewee cancelled on us last minute, and we ALMOST had a backfill but it didn’t work out. Sooooo, we tacked on another 30 minutes which means this weeks mix is over 2 hours long and includes the first ever TENSONSET! The past month has been incredible for new hip-hop LPs and EPs folks, please go out and support these artists with your DOLLARS, not just with your follows and likes. If you need that interview fix this week go back and listen to the JR Swiftz interview or the 180 other interviews in the archive. It has been said in the music industry that “it’s not what you know, but who you know, that makes one successful.” Taylor “Cas Metah” Hogle may argue that who you know, has a great impact on what you know. A quick listen to the Ohio native’s music reveals his understanding that life is about relationships. A glance at his discography reveals just how well he understands it, and how well he puts it into practice. Cas Metah is a friend to all true hip-hop heads, and he thinks it’s about time you get acquainted. Taylor Hogle fell in love with hip-hop as a teenager. Never one to shy away from commitment, Cas wrote raps for two years before ever touching a microphone! In 1997 he began recording homemade mixtapes and gaining a rep locally. Alongside 2-Tone, Ruffian, Shaw Bihland several other hungry talents, Cas formed Field Specialists. Metah quickly became the crews leader/in- house engineer, nicknaming his home studio the “Guest Room” due to the frequency of company and all night sessions. In 2002 Cas pressed up Key Tah Life, his first album of all original material. A chance meeting with JustMe in ‘03, led to a great friendship and the formation of Scribbling Idiots. Over the years the collective has discovered amazing talent worldwide and currently boasts the following “family” members: JustMe, Cas Metah, Theory Hazit, Elias, ReFlex the Architect, MP Ancient, Wonder Brown, Mouf Warren, MattmaN and Jaq. From landing opening gigs with Joell Ortiz, Twista, The Pharcydeand Bizzy Bone just to name a few, to hitting up tour dates with vets like CunninLynguists, J-Live and Aceyalone, the list goes on and on as Cas continues to create a large buzz in hip-hop circles on and off stage. Due in large part to Cas’ tireless work in the studio, he has released numerous albums, EP’s and/or single songs on his own, as well as with several established record labels, including: Plattertude Recordings (U.K.), Illect Recordings, End Of Earth Records, Dunsin’ Donuts (Japan), Soulspazm, and BBM (Baka Boyz Media)/Empire Distribution. When it comes to collaborating with some of the best known (and unknown) artists in the game, Cas has worked with nearly everybody! Here’s just a highlight reel: Masta Ace, Kno, Witchdoctor, T-mo Goodie, 4th Disciple, LMNO, Deacon The Villain, Mars ILL, Copywrite, J. Rawls, Hell Razah, Shabazz The Disciple, Mista Sinista, Audible Doctor, Blueprint, J57, Craig G, D.V. Alias Khryst, Casual, Wordsworth, Yukmouth, Ras Kass, Ahmad & Ski Beatz! Wow! Perhaps more impressive than any of the credits listed above, is the countless guest appearances, cameos, and side-projects Cas has piled up throughout the past two decades. Prolific doesn’t begin to explain this young man’s writing ability. Nor does it explain his magnetic personality and networking skills. Just Google the name “Cas Metah” and it will take you down a plethora of rabbit holes! And if you don’t know, now you know!
Hur kombinerar man medverkan i gulliga familjekomedier med ryktet som kontroversiell rappare (The nigga ya love to hate)? The hood is where Im from, but it aint what I am säger Cube som idag lever långt från de tuffa kvarteren I South Central. Det här är NWA-legendens historia. I timme två en annan av västkustens stora visionärer Aceyalone som satte en helt ny ton i Freestyle Fellowship.

2mex is joind by Aceyalone for epic stories about humble beginings, historic battles and a legendary legacy.
In advance of his new album "Action," the legendary Aceyalone of Freestyle Fellowship came by Dash Studios to tape an episode of Shots Fired. (The interview begins at the 35:19 mark) The innercity griot touches on everything from the early days of LA hip-hop (Egyptian Lover, Mixmaster Spade) to the roots of The Good Life, Project Blowed and how Freestyle Fellowship formed. The conversation spans from his personal views on art, media misperceptions, dealing with major labels, "The Book of Human Language," and his evolution over the last two decades. You don't want to miss this one. In addition, Nocando and Jeff talk "To Pimp a Butterfly."
