Information Morning Saint John from CBC Radio New Brunswick (Highlights)
For decades, centuries in fact, the bells at Trinity Anglican Church were the soundtrack of life in uptown Saint John. They were silent for two years, but last Friday, they rang out once more. We hear from some people who helped bring them back.
In this episode the PK's are joined again by special guest and show producer Rhesa G to discuss if as a christian and a preacher's kid having your wedding at a courthouse is ok or is it mandatory to have it inside of a church.

I discovered microfiction when I reviewed Loopholes by Susan McCreery in 2017. By definition, brevity is the key to good microfiction. The church bells in Sete Cidades in the Azores ring out - they are somewhat atonal and out of tune, making for a less harmonious soundscape than you would usually expect from church bells - birds nesting in the trees either side of a path leading up to the church provide a more melodious accompaniment. Recorded by Cities and Memory.

Bluestone is a fascinating variety of rock. When struck, certain bluestones will ring with a musical tone. Maenclochog, a Welsh village whose name means “bell” or “ringing stones,” used bluestones as church bells until the eighteenth century. Interestingly, the ruins of Stonehenge, in England, are built of bluestone, causing some to wonder if that landmark’s original purpose was musical. Some researchers claim that the bluestone at Stonehenge was brought from near Maenclochog, nearly two hundred miles away, because of their unique acoustic properties. Musical ringing stones are yet another of the wonders of God’s great creation, and they remind us of something Jesus said during His Palm Sunday entry into Jerusalem. As the people praised Jesus, the religious leaders demanded Him to rebuke them. “‘I tell you,’ he replied, ‘if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out’” (Luke 19:40). If bluestone can make music, and if Jesus made mention of even the stones bearing witness to their Creator, how might we express our own praise to the one who made us, loves us, and rescued us? He is worthy of all worship. May the Holy Spirit stir us to give Him the honor He deserves. All of creation praises Him.

In 1119, the Archbishop of Cologne, Frederick I of Schwarzenburg, imposed an interdict on the city of Cologne and its inhabitants. This ecclesiastical punishment was intended to punish the citizens of Cologne for their disobedience to the archbishop and their involvement in political conflicts. The interdict had serious repercussions on religious life in the city: church services were forbidden, sacraments and funerals were no longer allowed to take place, and even the bells of the churches remained silent. Why did this happen? Find out in this episode.
The pealing of church bells creates a feeling of peaceful nostalgia within. The clear, melodic tones transport us to ancient cathedrals, Gothic spires, and visions of a time when life was simple. Bells were the reigning technology of their day, communicating messages far and wide. They called believers to worship, rang out in celebration, and commemorated life events. The tolling of a bell invites us to momentarily pause and breathe, to rest in the moment, and perhaps to express gratitude for our blessings. --- If these Sound Machines have been helpful for you, I'd be so grateful if you'd rate the show on either Spotify or Apple Podcasts
Cesuna, northern Italy: church bells ring in the forest just outside the entrance to a long pedestrian tunnel that is part of a footpath made from an old train track. The train track ran from Asiago to Rocchette and has now been converted into a walking trail. On this cold December day, there was the crunch of ice underfoot, and the bells rang atmospherically through the clean, crisp forest air. Recorded by Cities and Memory.
"The recording contains the sound of bells on the Chapel Hill in Osobowice - a district of Wroclaw. The recording was made at noon in September 2022. The chapel is surrounded by trees and stands on the edge of the forest. You can hear some wind, the sound of trees and shifting leaves. At the beginning of the recording you can hear a train in the distance and the barking of dogs from the local animal shelter. The recording was made with a Free Space Pro II binaural microphone (3DIO Sound)." Recorded by Alan Grinde.
Soundscapes: Impressions de France For those who crave the original Epcot experiences, Impressions de France fits the bill: it has been playing every day that the park has been open since 1982. To top it off, the movie is set to a musical score written and arranged by Disney Legend, Buddy Baker, the man behind the music of The Haunted Mansion and If You Had Wings. For Impressions de France, Baker masterfully integrated original composition with works by celebrated French composers. And for those of us whose wanderlust fills our daydreams and inspires our desire to discover new places, explore new landscapes, and uncover unknown stories...Impressions de France is a feast for the imagination. Impressions tells the story of the France that once was, the joy of France that lives on today, and the Magic of France that always will be. And it invites us to be part of a unique and ephemeral moment in time...yet a moment that we get to enjoy again, and again. At least for now. And this is why I found it so important to share it with you. And I hope that, like me, you find its soundtrack calming and that it inspires you to visit this attraction, in person, the next time you visit Epcot Center. ----- Want More Here With The Magic? On Friday, September 9, 2022, at 12:00 pm, various church bells across the UK sounded off in tribute to the death of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth ll, following her passing on September 8th, 2022. The recording took place on the front lawn of the Lanyon Building, the main building of Queen's University Belfast, which also brought its main flag down to half-mast position. Sounds of daily life can be heard, ranging from cyclists, pedestrians, motor and emergency vehicles, birds, pedestrian crossings, and other local sounds in the area. The Church Bells were subtle and found gaps in the environmental soundscape to emerge and be heard. Each varied in duration, loudness, and placement in the listening experience. The bells mark a time of respect, change, and remembrance after a 70-year reign from the late Queen. Recorded by Georgios Varoutsos. IMAGE: Steven Lek, CC BY-SA 4.0 , via Wikimedia Commons

Britain has just celebrated Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee with a four-day national holiday. Rather than do a Deep Dive into the life and times of the Queen, which is done elsewhere and done well, I recorded my own audio diary as I joined celebrations in North and then West Yorkshire. Thank you very much to the City of Bradford Brass Band with Jonny Bates Musical Director, for allowing me to play some of their music here. You can find them at: http://www.bradfordbrass.co.uk Thank you also to Bradford Cathedral, Cathedral Chamber Choir directed by Alexander Berry for allowing me to play their performance of ‘I Was Glad'. You can watch “A Civic Service of thanksgiving for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee (Bradford Cathedral)” on Youtube. You can also follow Bradford Cathedral on Youtube, Instagram and Facebook.I hope you enjoy this week's musical episode! I certainly did.
