DJ Spider kicks off 2024 by interviewing renowned DJ/producer J.PERIOD. Hailed as a "music guru" by Rolling Stone, the Brooklynite is a prime example of someone who pushes the boundaries of being a DJ. His resume includes producing some of hip-hop's most creative mixtapes, serving as the music supervisor for the Brooklyn Nets, contributing to the Billboard No. 1 album "The Hamilton Mixtape," touring with Black Thought, and most recently, producing the "GRAMMY Salute to 50 Years of Hip-Hop" concert. The list goes on and on. In the interview, J.PERIOD reflects on his accomplishments and shares valuable insights into building a successful DJ career. Hosted on Acast. The legendary group, De La Soul has said this about my next guest “J.PERIOD mixtapes transcends just mixing records.” This week on The Library with Tim Einenkel, J. Period joins the conversation to discuss his origins as a DJ, what artists like Nas, The Roots, Mobb Deep, Lauryn Hill, Pharoahe Monch, Q-Tip, Big Daddy Kane and Pete Rock mean to him, and how was he able to flip the music from the 11-time Tony Award winning play “Hamilton” into a groundbreaking mixtape.
Dan Lish is a UK based artist whose of drawings of some of hip hops greatest creators has become instantly recognizable due to the intricate details and personal touches that go into every piece. The first installment of his book collecting some of these drawings is called "EgoStrip" and it has long been sold out. But you'll recognize the illustrations that grace album covers from artists such as Elzhi, J Period, Raekwon, Blu/Nottz and several others. Dan has a deep love for hip hop and its culture, having been at some point involved in several elements. He brings this rich history to his drawings and was kind enough to spend time with us to talk about some of that history. Then we mix things up a bit and take a short detour from our standard format by talking about Dan's favorite 12" singles from Ultramagnetic MC's "Critical Beatdown".

He’s done official mixtapes for Lauryn Hill and the Roots, toured with Black Thought, created The Hamilton Mixtape with Lin-Manuel Miranda, and DJed worldwide with the best of the best. Now, with the release of Story To Tell, J. Period has entered a new stratosphere. He’s stepping into the role of artist and making big moves, visiting the Tonight Show just last week. To celebrate the moment, he’s sitting down with longtime collaborator Talib Kweli and his People’s Party co-host Jasmin Leigh to talk through… all of it. A mixtape lesson from the absolute king of the genre.

Shawn J. Period crafted some of the greatest beats and worked with prolific artists like Mos Def, Talib Kweli, The Artifacts, and more. Join us as we chat about how he sampled a bird for the 'Universal Magnetic' beat which originally got turned down before it became a classic. So many stories mixed with so many nuggets of wisdom make for a great chat. Check it out.
If you were a follower of underground hip hop during the Rawkus years, then today's company will be a special treat for you (especially if you are from the 804). With his cousin and a high school friend, this gentleman's rap group quietly helped open doors for "southern-based" emcees and groups to get noticed by record labels in NYC. Their group, Down South, had a single and video called "Southern Comfort" that rang through the underground. After meeting Mos Def, today's company's name as a producer started to bubble and led to working with some underground hip hop royalty. The 804's own Mad Skillz, Q-Tip, Ras Kass, Artifacts, and many others dropped vocals on his production work; and during our conversation, I learned that he was part of the original 4 individuals who began what we now know as Black Star. Jigga WHAT? Jigga WHO? How did I not know that? We discussed his music career, how his spiritual journey changed his life (and his use of sampling), and his Drum Stacks sound design endeavor that is ready to take flight. Say hello to 804-born and raised music producer, Shawn J. Period. -Source

BANG! @southernvangard #radio presents the SHAWN J. PERIOD® interview session! If there was ever a week where Smithsonian Grade applied, this is it. We’re documenting history over here, Vangardians, not to mention giving ya’ll straight GAME - so fix your face, sit up straight, pay attention and take notes! This producer’s history and evolution over the years is remarkable - from getting signed by Rob “Reef” Tewlow & Stretch Armstrong to Big Beat / Atlantic Records in the early 90’s as part of hip-hop trio “Down South”, transitioning to a full time producer and being mentored by some of the best in the game like JuJu & V.I.C. of The Beatnuts, T-Ray and many more to being behind the boards for what could eventually be considered one of the biggest hip-hop singles of its time, not to mention a certified classic - Mos Def’s “Universal Magnetic” b/w “If You Can Huh You Can Hear”. Shortly after that, he took what seemed like an abrupt break from music to focus on family, but has been making a calculated return to the game as of late. We get on the horn with Shawn to talk about all of this and more, including his much welcomed re-entry to the scene after the extended hiatus, why he was unknowingly WAY ahead of his time by making a move to sample-free production in the late 90’s and how he’s leveraging his invaluable experiences to launch the next phase of his career in music. Shawn talks about the soon come debut of his sound design company, Drum Stacks, his partnership and upcoming podcast with Strong Island producer Kel C and how his relationship with Yasiin Bey (FKA Mos Def) has evolved over the years all while still maintaining their friendship. Don’t get it twisted - we get into some real nerd production ish too, but that’s way too much to get into here, so go ahead folks - press play without delay, ‘cause it’s most definitely that good good and ALWAYS that #SmithsonianGrade #TwiceAWeek #WeAreTheGard // southernvangard.com // @southernvangard on #applepodcasts #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud #youtube // #hiphop #rap #undergroundhiphop #boombap #DJ #mix #interview #podcast #ATL #WORLDWIDE #RIPCOMBATJACK Recorded live December 1, 2019 @ Dirty Blanket Studios, Marietta, GA southernvangard.com @southernvangard on #applepodcasts #soundcloud #youtube #spotifypodcast #googlepodcasts #stitcherradio #mixcloud #SmithsonianGrade #TwiceAWeek #WeAreTheGard twitter/IG: @southernvangard @jondoeatl @cappuccinomeeks

In this follow up interview, Hamilton Mixtape's Creator Lin-Manuel Miranda and Roots to Tribe Called Quest's go-to DJ and mixtape producer J. Period explains what exactly a DJ does, what sets him apart, and why Dj Jazzy Jeff really is a prince. He also reveals how, after working with Norman Lear, he got tapped to do music for the series America Divided. Most recently, J. Period teamed up with Jesse Williams, a former teacher, and heartthrob on Grey's Anatomy who blew away audiences with his socially astute and galvanizing speech at the BET Awards. Williams and J. Period are releasing Rise Up!, offering musical inspiration that is necessary now more than ever.
Hailed as a “music guru” by Rolling Stone and Questlove to Tribe Called Quest’s go to DJ and producer, J.PERIOD pioneered a way to tell stories through music and distill, celebrate and contextualize legendary musicians. The result is that the very musicians he creates a mixtape of seek out his lens on their own work. Theoretically, a baby can theoretically DJ, at least, that is what cloyingly obnoxious, upscale Tribeca DJ school claims, but J. Period took the craft to a form a high art. Having worked with Grammy legends, such as Kanye West, Mary J. Blige, Lauryn Hill, Common and The Roots, J. Period recently went mainstream producing, alongside Questlove and Pulitzer and Tony winning genius Lin-Manuel Miranda the album HAMILTON MIXTAPES. It is the number one album and J. Period oversaw the production and arrangement. He also has developed, written, and produced over 50 mixtapes and his own album, celebrating ten years as an international DJ, comes out in 2017. Our interview was recorded live at Joe’s Pub...
Producer and DJ J. Period joins COOKIES hosts Ben Detrick and Jordan Redaelli to discuss the streaking Sixers, drama between Camelo and the Zen Master, Golden State's dominance, and the delicate art of picking music for Brooklyn Nets games.
Shawn J. Period made an enduring mark in music during his prolific production output of the 90's - with his seminal hip-hop trio Down South (Big Beat/Atlantic) and later across a sprawling canvas for artists like Mos Def, Black Star, DJ Krush, Artifacts, Mike Zoot, Boot Camp and numerous others. Host Peter Agoston and Shawn J. dig deep into that period of time and bring it full circle in this rare and candid conversation on his life and career. After years of communicating on the phone and email this episode also marked the first time they met in person. Both natives of Virginia - we know Peter was excited to talk about that fact, so shouts to all those in or from VA listening! The true heads will definitely find this chat a treat and if you happen to be unfamiliar with this incredible multi-instrumentalist / producer, we hope it's a great primer to his catalog of music from then to now. Afterward, don't forget to subscribe! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
New York Times bestselling author Adam Mansbach (Rage Is Back, Angry Black White Boy, Go The Fuck To Sleep) and mixtape dj and producer J.Period (March 9: B.I.G. Smart talk, no filler. Let's go.
