On this flashback of Take It Personal Radio, we're hitting you with a remastered version of episode 50, our Hieroglyphics Tribute. This was a mammoth one. We've got special guests Slug, Murs, Apathy, J-Zone, The Grouch & Breakbeat Lou stopping by. We interview Del, Domino, Casual & Tajai and they've got stories for days! Del talks about doing shrooms with Q-Tip to Casual freestyling with Pharoahe Monch at the Gavin. We touch on Casual vs. Saafir and the impact it had on battle rap. We unfortunately find out Ice Cube wasn't a fan of Gang Starr and thought Kool Keith was too weird. Del explains what it was like not only being cousins with Ice Cube, but their musical similarities and his involvement earlier on in his career. We learn about Del's feelings towards the Gorillaz, while Domino breaks down just about every Hiero collaboration imaginable. We talk I Wish My Brother George Was Here, '93 Til Infinity, No Need For Alarm, Fear Itself, Like It Should Be and No Man's Land. We discuss their rap dominance prior to being dropped by the label. Welcome to Episode 239 of Lucretius Today. This is a podcast dedicated to the poet Lucretius, who wrote "On The Nature of Things," the most complete presentation of Epicurean philosophy left to us from the ancient world. Each week we walk you through the Epicurean texts, and we discuss how Epicurean philosophy can apply to you today. If you find the Epicurean worldview attractive, we invite you to join us in the study of Epicurus at EpicureanFriends.com, where we have a thread to discuss this and all of our podcast episodes.Today we are continuing to review Cicero's "On the Nature of The Gods," which began with the Epicurean spokesman Velleius defending the Epicurean point of view. This week will continue into Section 21 as Cotta, the Academic Skeptic, responds to Velleius, and we - in turn - will respond to Cotta in particular and the Skeptical argument in general.Today's Text: XXI. Cotta, with his usual courtesy, then began. Velleius, says he, were it not for something which you have advanced, I should have remained silent; for I have often observed, as I did just now upon hearing you, that I cannot so easily conceive why a proposition is true as why it is false. Should you ask me what I take the nature of the Gods to be, I should perhaps make no answer. But if you should ask whether I think it to be of that nature which you have described, I should answer that I was as far as possible from agreeing with you. However, before I enter on the subject of your discourse and what you have advanced upon it, I will give you my opinion of yourself. Your intimate friend, L. Crassus, has been often heard by me to say that you were beyond all question superior to all our learned Romans; and that few Epicureans in Greece were to be compared to you. But as I knew what a wonderful esteem he had for you, I imagined that might make him the more lavish in commendation of you. Now, however, though I do not choose to praise any one when present, yet I must confess that I think you have delivered your thoughts clearly on an obscure and very intricate subject; that you are not only copious in your sentiments, but more elegant in your language than your sect generally are. When I was at Athens, I went often to hear Zeno, by the advice of Philo, who used to call him the chief of the Epicureans; partly, probably, in order to judge more easily how completely those principles could be refuted after I had heard them stated by the most learned of the Epicureans. And, indeed, he did not speak in any ordinary manner; but, like you, with clearness, gravity, and elegance; yet what frequently gave me great uneasiness when I heard him, as it did while I attended to you, was to see so excellent a genius falling into such frivolous (excuse my freedom), not to say foolish, doctrines. However, I shall not at present offer anything better; for, as I said before, we can in most subjects, especially in physics, sooner discover what is not true than what is.XXII. If you should ask me what God is, or what his character and nature are, I should follow the example of Simonides, who, when Hiero the tyrant proposed the same question to him, desired a day to consider of it. When he required his answer the next day, Simonides begged two days more; and as he kept constantly desiring double the number which he had required before instead of giving his answer, Hiero, with surprise, asked him his meaning in doing so: “Because,” says he, “the longer I meditate on it, the more obscure it appears to me.” Simonides, who was not only a delightful poet, but reputed a wise and learned man in other branches of knowledge, found, I suppose, so many acute and refined arguments occurring to him, that he was doubtful which was the truest, and therefore despaired of discovering any truth. But does your Epicurus (for I had rather contend with him than with you) say anything that is worthy the name of philosophy, or even of common-sense?

Tällä viikolla näläkee siirreltiin juhla-aterian merkeissä. Saksassa syntynyt ja monen mutkan kautta Sorsakoskelle päätynyt Alois Böhmich pyörittää Kaunismaan maatilaa yhdessä vaimonsa Tuulikin kanssa. Pääsiäisen juhlapöytään napsuvan reseptin ohessa pääsemme jaksossa tutustumaan tarkemmin Aloisin elämänpolkuun sekä Kaunismaan tilan toimintaan. Haastattelijana toimii Johannes Teppo. Kaunismaan tilan karitsanpaisti yrttimarinadilla Yrttimarinadi 1 dl oliiviöljyä 2 rkl balsamicoa, punaviinietikkaa tai reilu loraus punaviiniä 2 tl hunajaa tai siirappia 3-4 kpl valkosipulinkynsiä 2 tl salviaa 2 tl timjamia 2 tl rosmariinia 2 tl suola ( tai 1,5 - 2% lihan painosta eli 15-20g/kg ) pippuria kaada astiaan öljy, sekoita joukkoon hyvää etikkaa, esimerkiksi balsamicoa. Etikan tilalla tai lisäksi voi käyttää punaviiniä. Rouhaise sekaan mustapippuria ja suolaa. Murskaa valkosipulinkynnet veitsen lappeella, poista kuoret ja halutessasi pilko pienemmiksi tai käytä valkosipulipuristintä, lisää marinadiin. Lisää yrtit ja hunajaa ( siirappia ) Hiero marinadi lihan päälle ja jätä maustumaan. Paistin marinointiaika mieluummin vuorokauden. Karitsanpaistin paistaminen Nosta liha pöydälle tunti ennen paistoa. Laita lihamittari lihaan. Kuumenna uunissa paistovuoassa ensin 220 asteessa 20 min. Sitten laske lämpö 125 asteeseen. Paista kunnes mittari näyttää 65 astetta. Aikaa kuluu noin 1 ½ tuntia.
Tämän viikon reseptin tarjoaa Tornikahvila Puijonmajan Helena Aaltonen. Nälänsiirron kylkeen puhutaan mm. Aaltosen pitkästä 30-vuotisesta urasta Pujion tornissa ja sen kuppeesta! Mahtuupa tarinoihin yksi mielenkiintoinen illallismuistokin. Helena Aaltosen nälänsiirto-resepti: Ruisleipä (valmistusaika 30h) Ainesosat: 2,5l vettä 25g hiivaa 4l ruisjauhoja 2tl suolaa Valmistaminen: 1. Päivä 1. 2,5l vettä (37 astetta) 2. 25g hiivaa 3. 1,5 ruisjauhoja 2. päivä (24h myöhemmin) 4. 1l lisää ruisjauhoja 5. Anna levätä n. 3 tuntia 6. Lisää suola ja 1,5l ruisjauhoja 7. Anna kohota n. 1 tunti 8. Hiero leiviksi (8 kpl) 9. Anna kohota n. 1 tuntia 10. Paista 250 asteessa n. 30min 11. Loppupaista 170 asteessa n. 30min Ja eikun nauttimaan maragiinin, voin tai perunasalaatin kera! Ohjelman toimittajana: Joonas Puomio Ohjelmassa yhteistyössä: Puijon ravintolat
Marcellus - Rome's Sword Against HannibalParallel - PelopidasImportant PeopleArchimedes (sections 15-17; 19)Important PlacesNola - A small settlement near Naples.Tarentum -The Greek colony that had called Pyrrhus over to help them fight the Romans about eighty years before this Second Punic War. They switch sides several times, but their location on the spur of the calf of Italy makes them strategically important for either side. Naples - Originally a Greek colony, Syracuse - An even wealthier Syracuse than we last saw in the Live of Timoleon and Dion, but one which has a tyrant again. The tyrant, however, seems more humane the the ones we read about in the past. For one, he is friends with and funds a great many of Archimedes's most clever and ingenious engineering devices. Hiero is particularly glad of Archimedes's friendship as the Roman besiege Syracuse to bring it over to their side. Key Vices and VirtuesWar-loving (φιλοπόλεμος) - Some might say virtue, but Plutarch likely wants to make the point that this is a vice. Marcellus is talented in many types of war as well, from sieges to guerilla skirmishes to pitched battles. He loves everything about the troop movement, exercise, motivation, and implementation. Haughty (γαῦρος) - We saw this was a bad thing for Coriolanus, but Marcellus handles it much better. It does cause some strange choices, though, as he will defend himself in person twice against his detractors. Politics is still so very personal in Rome that his personal presence shames his litigious foes both times. ἀγέρωχος - high minded; arrogant (noble or lordly in Homer, later takes on pejorative tone) - It's hard to see if this is a gloss on haughty or a throwback to these older Homeric heroes. His love of one-on-one combat certainly has a Homeric flavor that Plutarch highlights (along with his parallel, Pelopidas), but it's hard to know if a leader should be high-minded or not, particularly because the dictionaries also provide us with definition like arrogant, which is universally bad. The context is key, and so pay close attention to how your translator uses these words. σώφρων - Practically wise. The tension between this virtue, which normally helps him so much against the wiliness of Hannibal, also seems to be temporarily paralyzed when he falls into the trap Hannibal sets for him. In what ways are the prideful sometimes prevented from seeing the best course of action? Philanthropic (φιλάνθρωπος) - Probably better translated as humane, this is Plutarch's highest compliment. Ultimately, anyone who learns this learned it from the Greeks. Plutarch is just fine being ruled by Hellenized Romans, but they must be Hellenized otherwise they'll run to the extremes of someone like Coriolanus. cf. Section 10 - naturally humane - τῷ φύσει φιλανθρώπῳA lover of Greek Education and Thought - (ἐραστής Ἑλληνικῆς παιδείας καὶ λόγων) - a lover of Greek education and wisdomSupport the show

After last week's discussion of Hiero, the guys are back this week with fare that is lighter in some ways, and heavy in others: Clint Eastwood's Million Dollar Baby. From light analysis of the boxing movie trope to the weighty topic of euthanasia, the guys cover it all. Plus: Greg was actually in a real fight once. You'll never guess where.
This week, the guys reconvene to discuss Xenophon's Hiero. Greg has published translations of Xenophon, and is especially in his element. The core question the guys focus on is the same as that of this minor work: is the life of a tyrant more pleasant than that of a commoner?

Unlike Spain, Sicily had been relatively quiet during the opening years of the Second Punic War. That all changed in 216 BC with the death of Hiero II, King of Syracuse. Staunchly pro-Roman, Hiero had feared that his grandson and natural heir, Hieronymus, would lead Syracuse to disaster. His greatest fears were justified - shortly after the old king's death, Hieronymus broke with Rome and allied with Hannibal. When Hieronymus was assassinated, one of the most confused and confusing conflicts of the Second Punic War began, one which would ultimately culminate in the sacking of the greatest Greek city in Magna Graecia. Tajai Massey sees Hiero day as a physical manifestation of the Souls of Mischief's most famous song, "93 Til Infiinty", where he and the other emcees give listeners a taste of life in Oakland. These days, living in Oakland, it's hard to ignore the growing wealth disparities, the massive unsheltered population, and continued gentrification. "A lot of folks I see during Hiero Day, they've had to move away, to Stockton, Sac, L.A... anywhere that's cheaper than here. But we see them on Hiero Day, so it's like a big family reunion," says Tajai. Another unfortunate change in the Bay Area: fewer affordable art spaces. This week on Rightnowish, we talk to Tajai about the intersection of culture and the built environment, and the importance of having access to space in order to share, celebrate and create culture.

Some people think the revolutions of the 18th century can be blamed on Protesantism. Yet others think that Protestant churches are too often the handmaidens of the state. What gives? This week Onsi, Colin, and Rhys are joined by Dr. Miles Smith to discuss the history of Protestants and revolution, and what we can learn from Protestants of the past.NOTE: most books below are linked via Bookshop.org. Oakland is a city filled with dynasties teams. You had the Raiders, the A's and most recently, the Warriors. But this Oakland collective, better known as the Hieroglyphics Crew, had a dynasty of their own. Founded by Del the Funky Homosapien, this was squad rolled deep, very deep. They were like the Wu before the Wu even existed. Hieroglyphics featured many personalities and styles ranging from Del, Casual, Pep Love, Domino, Opio, Phesto, Tajai, A-Plus, Jay-Biz, Mike G, Snupe, Extra Prolific to Toure. Their 3rd eye logo is immediately recognizable as are many of their classics cuts. This mini-mix is from our West Coast Classic series, and while we only scratched the surface, this Hiero tribute serves as a great reminder of the their dominance in hip-hop. Oaktown is full of legends like Rickey Henderson, Bill Russell, Kamala Harris, Tom Hanks, Mark Hamill, Bruce and Brandon Lee, Gary Payton, Marshawn Lynch, 2Pac, Paul Pierce, MC Hammer, Tony! Toni! Tone!, Frank Oz, The Pointer Sisters, Too $hort, Mac Dre, Clint Eastwood, Zendaya, one-time Hiero affiliate Mahershala Ali , and the muthaf*ckin' Hieroglphics crew!
In this episode of This; That; and The Third DJ Ammbush sits with Hieroglyphic/Souls of Mischief MC/Producer/DJ A-Plus. A-Plus decodes his production technique behind SOM's "93 Til Infinity" and reveals how Gangstarr played a major role in the production. A-Plus discusses the transition from a major record label to independent. A-Plus also takes us behind the scenes of the infamous A Tribe Called Quest "Midnight Marauders" LP art which featured Hiero and many more of your favorites.
