How do you avoid overcomplicating construction? What should the role of innovation be in construction firms? What is the true potential of Industrialize Construction? Join host Todd and guests Jeevan Kalanithi and Adam Settino as they discuss the story behind OpenSpace.ai, setting aside time and space for innovation on the job, the importance of finding and considering different perspectives, the role of Industrialized Construction moving forward and more. Jeevan Kalanithi is the CEO of OpenSpace.ai. Jeevan sold his first company, Sifteo, to 3D Robotics, where he eventually became the President. 3DR, a 200+ person company, launched a drone which made $45M in its first year. Jeevan was most recently an Entrepreneur-in-Residence at Lux Capital. He holds a BS from Stanford and an MS from MIT, where he was a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellow. Adam Settino is a Solutions Engineer Manager at OpenSpace.ai. He spent seven years in design as an architect and the last ten years in construction as Director of Virtual Design and Construction. Most recently, his fiery passion for identifying where technology can improve how we design and build has led him to the tech world, joining the team at OpenSpace as their Solutions Engineer Manager. TODD-TAKES There is no need to overcomplicate things. Simple is always better. I know this is easier said than done. However, with some intentional focus on the goal to simplify you will be able to achieve just that. It is so important to get different perspectives early and often. If people are involved in the planning, they are much more likely to be bought in during adoption. We need to democratize innovation throughout the company and encourage finding and bubbling up those small 1% improvements. When you are able to stack 1% improvements on each other you will be amazed the distance you can go.
Building a User Research strategy can feel daunting, especially for beginners. What does a research strategy even have to look like? Where should you begin? Join Lanie and Sarah Romoslawski in this episode as they discuss how you can start building your User Research strategy for your project, even if you're still a beginner. They'll share tips on where to begin and how you can kick off building your own strategy but starting with 2 simple questions - what do we want to learn? And, what is our end goal? Sarah Romoslawski is a user researcher that has worked in games, children's entertainment, consumer electronics, health tech, and most recently, fintech industries. Sarah's interest in user research for games came about while working in academic virtual reality and mixed reality research groups at Carnegie Mellon and Arizona State University. Starting her gaming career at EA Pogo.com as a game producer, her first research-focused position was at Sifteo, where she built a grassroots playtesting service for the iconic video gaming blocks. Previously the Senior Manager of User Experience Research at Glu Mobile, she grew the user experience research function there from a team of one to a team of eight, supporting a wide variety of game genres and multiple game development studios. Sarah is currently a Staff Researcher at Coinbase focused on the design system.
We spoke with Micah Scott (@scanlime), the original inspiration for this podcast. She gave us a rundown of her past and current projects which run the gamut of consumer toys, art installations, and telling a story through technology exploration. Her past projects include coastemelt, Wacom tablet, and Fadecandy. We also talked about her challenges on Sifteo with limited architectures and resources. We tackled some basic computer architecture types. The latest project is Winchbot where viewers can watch Tuco and the other kitties. Micah broke down reverse engineering the gimbal motors with Sigrok. We swapped favorite tools (ipython) and Jen lost a bet. You can follow Micah along on her YouTube channel and support her on Patreon. Have comments or suggested names for the show? Find us on twitter @unnamed_show, or hit us up at on the comment form. Kelly interviews Andy Losik about his new book, Stay in the Game, sharing his knowledge of technology annually on a local television news program, working with amazing corporations focused on helping education, and providing quality professional development for educators. Andy and Kelly also discuss being the all-around "helpful tech guy," a role many wired educators know very well. Andy is a great teacher, a great guy, and has really expanded his impact as an educator. This is a great interview for all educators. You will be inspired to expand your classroom and discover many ways to make an even bigger impact and improve your lifestyle. Andy Losik has been teaching for 21 years in a variety of elementary school settings. For fifteen of those years, he has taught the elementary Infotech program by combining technology and literacy skills in Hamilton, Michigan. Andy is a STAR Discovery Educator, a Google Education Certified Innovator, and Apple Distinguished Educator as well as the 2009 Michigan Tech-Educator of the Year. Along with his classroom duties, Andy oversees online learning at Hamilton High School serves as a technology "helpful guy" in his school district and across the country for private, public, and charter schools. He has also provided insight for companies like Disney, Sifteo, Sony and most recently joined a special team at Discovery Education that works to advise and promote its many corporate partner educational initiatives. First and foremost Andy is a husband and dad who loves his family, fishing, and football as much as he loves the techie stuff. Andy's new book, Stay in the Game, is about Jared Veldheer. Jared is one of the top left tackles in the National Football League but very little of his path to the Arizona Cardinals is what you might expect. Stay in the Game follows Jared's journey of being a brainy, over-sized kid who often found it hard to fit in to an athlete discovering his many talents. It didn't “just happen” though and without a core set of principles in his life, it never would have. Sometimes the best thing you can do is “Stay in the Game.” It took author Andy Losik and Jared's parents nearly five years to complete, but “Stay in the Game” is now available in paperback and eBook. The book targets older kids and the casual football fan but the hardcore pigskin geek will have plenty of material as it also details a lot of the recruiting process, training for the NFL Combine and Draft, as well as some of the inner workings of how the League and teams operate.
