The Catholic Herald Podcast: Merely Catholic with Gavin Ashenden
Dr Gavin Ashenden this week speaks to fellow Catholic Herald associate editor and novelist Simon Caldwell about the recently published norms from the Vatican governing the discernment and handling of private revelations and associated mystical and supernatural phenomena. They discuss what the new norms represent and what has prompted the overhaul, the first since 1978. They also examine the purpose of private revelations and the dangers posed to the Church by those which are fraudulent. Caldwell, who has written frequently about private revelations, also talks for the first time about his forthcoming second novel, Lady Mabel's Gold – the sequel to The Beast of Bethulia Park – and the character of Ana Guerrero, a schoolteacher who bleeds mysteriously from her head. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/0852447000?ref=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_dp_76JQB9YEXV7WDKNRPTYE&ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_dp_76JQB9YEXV7WDKNRPTYE&social_share=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_dp_76JQB9YEXV7WDKNRPTYE

Chubby! on Facebook: www.facebook.com/chubbyrecords Simon Caldwell on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/djsimoncaldwell/ @dj-simon-caldwell Since the early 1990s he's been playing records to beer drinkers, bum shakers and radio listeners alike, he has managed to avoid the stifling 'style' classification so many other DJ's trap themselves into, keeping himself free to draw on his varied loves of deep, soulful house, techno, funk, jazz, electro, booty, hip hop and anything else which catches his ear.
This week we had local Swerve favourite somersault in for the subsonic take over. The man him self has come through a few times now and needs little introduction. We had a good chat about what he has coming up, what he is gonna be wearing and some other banter. Here is a bit of info Somersault’s music is uncompromising. Heavily influenced by the shuffling rhythms of dark UK garage, atmospheric techno and deep melodic house, Somersault likes to straddle the line between the delirious highs and murky lows, a sound that’s brought his unique sets to outdoor festivals and underground clubs. The young producer has come a long way from working as a funk guitarist to producing music played on international festival stages by Jon Convex. While his initial entry into electronic music was with electronica duo This Mess, Somersault came into being while travelling through Europe and immersing in the rich club culture in 2014. He is however, no newcomer to dance music having played at major Australian festivals Rabbits Eat Lettuce, Dragon Dreaming and Burning Seed as well as at major Sydney club nights S.A.S.H, Something Else, Blueprint, Foxlife and Cakes supporting PleasureKraft, Pepperpot, Simon Caldwell, Made In Paris, Politics of Dancing and Robbie Lowe. Somersault's eagerly awaited Stampede EP is soon to be released on Upon Access, Sydney’s groundbreaking new label curated by Techno Heavyweight Made In Paris. The EP has been causing a stir in promo pools worldwide gaining praising support from Oliver Schories, Laurent Garnier, Marco Carola, Riva Starr, Sasse, Uone, Joe T Vannelli Steve Ward, Sossa, Joris Voorn, Horse Meat Disco, Marc Poppcke In early 2016 Somersault released his most ambitious work: the four track concept ‘Ultramarine EP’ on Build It Records. The EP instantly entered the Beatport top 100 Deep House Chart and received over 40,000 plays on soundcloud within the first week of release. ‘Ultramarine’ covers much deeper, darker and groovier territory than the producer’s prior work. 2015 saw the release of three widely acclaimed EPs on US imprints Build It and Particles (Proton). His release ‘Devotion/Respect’ had over 15,000 plays on Soundcloud after only two days. ‘Space Is Big’, the producer’s most successful Particles release, has since been remixed by progressive house luminaries Alex O’Rion and Sebastian Weikum. Somersault’s schedule is filling with two planned releases on Australia’s prolific Open Records and bookings at Bohemian Beatfreaks Festival, Squared Senses Festival, S.A.S.H, Foxlife and Something Else. Check him out on all channels and at the festival https://www.facebook.com/somersaultmusicaus/?fref=ts https://soundcloud.com/somersaultmusic
Live hardware set from Sydney-local Simon Mann... Simon Mann has been playing and making electronic music for close to 20 years. Originally focussing on hip-hop and hip-house sounds of the 80's and 90's, Simon eventually gravitated toward house and techno after finding the joys of DJ-ing to a club crowd in the mid 90's. Sighting early influences such as local heroes HMC, GT, Pocket, Head Affect and the rest of the Thunk Records crew, as well as international techno luminaries like Jeff Mills, Carl Craig and Claude Young, Simon's taste has always been in the darker more underground sounds rather that upfront club tunes. After taking 'runner up' position in Sydney's Radio Dex Bedroom Bangers competition in the early 2000's, the DJ-ing opportunities opened up considerably for Simon and he found himself playing alongside some of Sydney's most respected jocks including Phil Smart, Simon Caldwell, Ben Korbel, Ken Cloud, Ajax and Mark Murphy. Simon's interest in production had always been in the background and a small studio of electronic instruments was developed over time. Most production work was done as part of the band We'd up until mid-2000 when Simon started to focus on solo productions with earnest. Simon's sound has evolved into an exploration of deep house, techno and dub techno elements. Currently Simon performs live electronic sets using a combination of hardware and software to create his unique compositions. The podcast recorded for DHA is a hardware set recorded live in one take. To create his sound Simon currently uses an Elektron Analog 4, Yamaha Cs6x and Rm1x, Roland TR606 and TR8, Korg Volca Bass and Sample, Pioneer EFX500. Signal processing and effects are carried out through Ableton Live Suite. Simon releases music on Etui Records (Germany), Lobe Limbique Musique, East Point Sounds, Lamb Shanks Digital, Highjack Recordings (Ukraine) and Pinksilver Digital. Dave Stuart is a nothing short of a stalwart of the Sydney house and techno scene. Dave has been working hard over the past couple of years on a weekly night here in Sydney called La Famiglia, which has recently, as of about two weekends ago, rebranded itself as ‘Something Else’. Something Else celebrated its launch on 25th October with Red Rack’em at the helm, with support from local legends Simon Caldwell & Magda Bytnerowicz. That was quickly followed up a week later with none other than Ian Pooley as headliner… and there are no signs of the big names slowing down at Something Else anytime soon. Follow Something Else on Facebook for more details bit.ly/SomethingElse-FB Back to Dave… Along with running a weekly party and DJ-ing at that party, Dave has regularly travelled to Europe taking his unique brand of techno, dub techno and deep techno across the world. This year, Dave based himself in Berlin for around 6 months and enjoyed time playing regularly in Berlin at Tresor / Globus, Wanted & Sankt Veit at Chalet, Golden Gate, Parallel at Griessmuehle, Moxxom Festival (Gorlitz) & hopped across to Spain to play at Macarena Club in Barcelona and +afterhours in Malta. Of course, Dave has played at every big name club in and around Sydney, plus festivals such as Subsonic Music Festival. This time around Dave has produced an immaculate vinyl-only mix of deep, dub and acidy goodness… For a full tracklist head to SoundCloud... http://soundcloud.com/deephouseau/107-dave-stuart
