Today, Simon Jacobs (String Follow) joins us to talk about nailing the tone of his new novel, starting with a very tight draft and “blowing it out from the middle,” finding an agent, being the son of a successful writer, revising the book to make space for the reader, childhood haunted houses, and more! Simon Jacobs is from Dayton, Ohio, and lives in Portland, Oregon. He is the author of the novels String Follow (MCD/FSG, 2022) and Palaces (Two Dollar Radio, 2018), and of two collections of short fiction: Masterworks (Instar Books, 2019), and Saturn (Spork Press, 2016), a collection of David Bowie stories. His other fiction has appeared in Tin House, Black Warrior Review, Joyland, and Paper Darts. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This week's guest is Simon Jacobs, whose latest novel STRING FOLLOW is a haunting look at Midwest suburbia and the inherent isolation of being a teen. STRING FOLLOW tracks a sprawling cast of characters and their growing fascination with the bizarre and occult. Narrated by the collective 'we' of a controlling force, the novel takes us into the inner minds of scared, lonely teenagers seeking guidance and belonging in a fraught, isolated world. The result is truly shocking, but in a larger sense, not as surprising as we think. Jacobs deviates from his horror/thriller genre to highlight a favorite book from his Anglophile days, THE REMAINS OF THE DAY by Kazuo Ishiguro. This 1988 classic is the simple tale of Stevens, a longstanding English butler who ties his innate self-worth to his service and performance. Slowly, Stevens's self-concept erodes as he takes a trip to the countryside and examines the course of his life, as well as the decisions and indecisions he's made through the years. Jacobs shares his insight on everything from writing the modern teen to interpreting this book in a capitalist system to further reading recommendations. It's a lively episode and certainly worth a listen. Please be upstanding, as Business Problems Solved welcomes a real-life member of the nobility to the show. Lord Simon Jacobs joins Lee to discuss his journey through business, which led to the founding of Professional Weirdos, a creativity training company designed to encourage the unique gifts in everyone, and which help to create an effective business culture. KEY TAKEAWAYS Many people find themselves hired for their creativity and unique abilities, only to have these singular qualities lost and diluted as time goes by. Professional Weirdos is designed with keeping this singular spirit alive in people. An important part of being creative is the ability to also accept feedback. If you put anything out into the world, you have to be open to all types of feedback, positive and negative. Creativity comes in all shapes and sizes. We must never assume that we do not have a creative side. Even the act of problem solving involves a level of creativity within ourselves. We must seek to redefine what professional means,. For many it is the stereotypical image of an executive, when it actual fact, a professional does not need a suit a tie. It is reflected in the qualities we present in business and in life. BEST MOMENTS ‘For the individual there’s motivation and new ideas. For the company, there’s innovation, there’s motivation, and there’s efficiency’ ’There are weirdos who do things professionally, and there are professionals who are weird’ ‘Fundamentally, being human means that you are creative’ ‘Professional means being timely, being honest, it means being polite' VALUABLE RESOURCES Business Problems Solved Podcast Lord Simon Jacobs LInkedIn - https://uk.linkedin.com/in/simonjjacobs Lord Simon Jacobs Twitter - https://twitter.com/lordsimonjacobs?lang=en Professional Weirdos - https://www.professionalweirdos.co.uk/founder/ ABOUT THE HOST For the last 15 years, I have been a multi-sector internal or external business improvement consultant, building the improved capability of individuals, teams and businesses. This week I'm talking to Professional Weirdo and serial entrepreneur, Lord Simon Jacobs. Simon's a cousin of one of my oldest pal's, and when he got in touch I jumped at the chance to have him on the podcast. Talking to him was an absolute treat - Simon's career has progressed jumping from opportunity to opportunity. Running businesses, launching innovations and new ideas, becoming a Lord as a teenager and even creating his own religion! This is definitely one of my favourite episodes so far - I'm pretty sure I haven't laughed this much on the microphone before, so I hope you have as much fun listening as I did talking to Simon. -- If you'd like to support Sod's Law you can become a Sod's Law patron at patreon.com/sodspod from as little as £1 /$1 a month - there are different tiers including ad-free episodes, giveaways and more!

Simon Jacobs - founder of Professional Weirdos - Yes – you can be ‘you’, be ‘different’, use humour, and still grow a successful business! Yes you can go and sell yourself to big corporates in this way – and get engagement from them! We are wired for conformity – so you have to put conscious effort into not conforming. Grow a community around you that feels interesting – that you want to engage with yourself. ‘You want to attract the people that like the stuff that you do differently.’
