In today's episode, I dive into my blitz of a trip to London. I went for 2.5 days to kick off my 2-week birthday trip throughout Northern Europe. I landed on my 30th birthday in London and didn't quite stop until I was flying back home from Iceland. My best friend @chrisjunebug joins me on today's episode as a certified Anglophile who has never been to England! She asks me what was different from my expectations, what I'd skip next time, and what I wish I did instead. Of course, the Taurus that she is, we talk a lot about the food scene. Find out where my favorite fish and chips were from, where I had my birthday dinner, and much much more, including how to survive the crowd at Harrod's and in my opinion... Abbey Road is a skip. Bridging the Gap Between Art and Science of Dog Breeding Host Laura Reeves is joined by Aimee Llewellyn Zaidi, project manager for the International Partnership for Dogs. Llewellyn Zaidi's work is bridging the gap between art and science in dog breeding. They talk about inbreeding and genetic diversity, how those things go together and what you can do when there isn't a test for a health problem. [caption id="attachment_13097" align="alignleft" width="300"] Aimée Llewellyn-Zaidi and her Corgi.[/caption] “International Partnership for Dogs offers free resources for dog breeders and for vets to kind of give you some unbiased transparent guidance,” Llewellyn Zaidi said. “I am a third generation Pembroke Welsh Corgi owner. My grandparents had beef cattle in Oregon in the 1960s. They started their farm up in Silverton, Oregon. And my grandmother was a little bit of an Anglophile. And so she got two corgis back in the 70s in Oregon, which there weren't too many corgis out here then. “And she had these great aspirations of having them being working corgis and they worked really hard at cuddling. And they maybe, you know, barked at things, but yeah, they started as working dogs but were 100 % professional lap dogs, you know, as corgis really know how to do it. And I just never lost my love for the Pems. “I started working as a health manager for the Kennel Club in the UK (in 2012). And by the end of my time in the UK, I had developed a team and I was the head of health and research there, really focused on bringing evidence-based education resources to breeders and to the veterinary community and to breed advisors with lots and lots of tools and resources available. “I really wanted to take the science and kind of translate it into something practical. There wasn't a lot of in between at the time between researchers and the people who actually have to make the breeding decisions and that disconnect really bugged me. I think it really bugged me that there wasn't such an easy way for communication between really the art and the science of dog breeding, trying to bring those things a little bit closer together. “I want to take some of the mystery out of some of science or some of the resources that are available. I try to be really honest and transparent about what we know, what we don't know, what's still kind of out there, what things might be not the most ideal resources. “I feel like that honesty is the best way for people to be informed and to make ultimately the breeding decisions. You guys have the hard job. You have the job of deciding, right? So, I just want to give you information that can help you hopefully make those really informed decisions.”
This is an episode to examine what Churchill really did for the West after witnessing the emotional & ahistorical outbursts by the usual suspects after Darryl Cooper from the Martyrmade Podcast appeared on Tucker Carlson on 2 SEP 2024. I am simply addressing the claims of Churchill By Cooper as "the chief villain" which I think was hyperbolic (Cooper accedes to this) because I think Churchill was one of many villains during WWII. I am a reluctant Anglophile and I think historical revisionism is a healthy reaction to triumphalist historiography in the West that has made questioning accepted narratives a scholar crime. This week head up to Mundelein IL to visit with Tony Bena, co-founder and head brewer at Tonality Brewing Company. One of the newest breweries in the Chicagoland area, they opened last November with a solid, classic taplist and a full restaurant menu. Tony chats with The Brit and co-host Ken McMullen (Fox Republic Brewing) while they sample some of his brews, including what could be called his 'early days' flagship beer, a rather delicious Kölsch. We hope we have set the 'tone' for your next brewery visit! Cheers!!

We've reached our 400th show and we've put together a retrospective of some of our milestones along the way. It's thanks to all our listeners who keep us recording each episode, and thanks to all the brewers who have given their time to talk to us. Plus thanks to all my co-hosts along the way, especially the 'original' Yankee, Lingo! We've drunk a bunch of brews on our journey, and the last 17 years have been a blast, so we'll keep podcasting as long as we can. Here's our story so far...CHEERS! Join us next week when we visit another of Illinois great craft breweries.
In this episode we welcome long-time RBP contributor Ira Robbins as he celebrates the 50th anniversary of the launch of his beloved Trouser Press. Ira tells us about the musical Anglophilia that began for him with the Beatles but surged with the 1968 release of The Who Sell Out. He then recounts the beginning of his friendship with schoolmate Dave Schulps and explains how it led to a shared obsession with the British music press. The story of the 1974 launch of Anglophile fanzine Trans-Oceanic Trouser Press, in partnership with the late Karen Rose, is accompanied by quotes from a 2001 interview Ira gave to RockCritics.com. He talks about the years that followed the dropping of the "Trans-Oceanic" prefix, and about some of the contributors – more than a few female – who made Trouser Press such essential '70s reading. After playing a clip from a 1975 audio interview Ira did with Cockney Rebel's late frontman Steve Harley – who died after this episode was recorded – we turn our attention to his more recent encounter with the rather more genial Nick Lowe. Clips from this 2007 conversation prompt a general appreciation of the Jesus of Cool's career from Kippington Lodge to Little Village via Elvis Costello and Johnny Cash. After we've paid tribute to the departed Eric Carmen – with our guest disputing that (the) Raspberries were authentically "power pop" – Mark talks us out with quotes from the pieces he's most enjoyed adding to the RBP library over the preceding fortnight. Many thanks to special guest Ira Robbins. Zip It Up! The Best of Trouser Press Magazine 1974–1984 is published by Trouser Press Books and available now via trouserpressbooks.com. Pieces discussed: Ira Robbins articles, The Story behind Trouser Press, Ira interviewed on RockCritics.com, Steve Harley audio, The New Wave Washes Out, Nick Lowe audio, Eric Carmen: Rock's Rejuvenated Raspberry, World Party, Charlie Watts, Was (Not Was), Rhythm and Blues and Kiss.
Since 2021, Lisle has been home to Bubblehouse Brewing, and when we asked the craft beer community in the Chicago area where we should visit for our next interview, the Bubblehouse 'popped' up as a favorite. The Brit and co-host Ken McMullen (Fox Republic Brewing brewmaster) headed over there and sat down with Jon Miller, Head Brewer and co-Founder, to discover more about this very popular brewery and taproom! CHEERS!
In this episode we venture back up to Lake County and the village of Lake Villa, where we visit with Harbor Brewing Company Founder Kyle Wenzel, and Head Brewer Adam Brose. HBC has been around for over 5 years and has built a large following in their taproom, plus the biergarten located at Winthrop Harbor where you can find awesome beer and views of Lake Michigan. With over 24 taps, these guys seem to be doing it right, and we recommend a visit to one or both of the locations! CHEERS!
This year, The Brit has asked a panel of brewers and chums to help him taste, chat about, and arbitrarily pass judgement on a range of barley wines. We have gathered them from across the USA, plus we have a couple that come from the UK, home of the barley wine style. Joining The Brit are, from Art History Brewing Tom Rau, Ed and Mike Seaman from Broken Brix, Chuck Fort from Church Street Brewing, and ex-tavern landlord John Karwoski. Thanks to Tom, we are recording this at Geneva Lager Works, home to the production arm of Art History Brewing. We also have a short video to accompany a couple of the tastings which can be found on our YouTube channel. Plus Cindy Rau stops by later, just to make sure Tom is not getting too rowdy! CHEERS!
OHH JUUUUUDY! This week Ben and Will dive head first into the very first P-MoN installment of PUPPET HISTORY! For the first episode in this illustrious series, the Puppet Masters will be talking about everyone's favorite British hand puppet, Mr. Punch! It was during Covid in December of 2020 when we first checked in via Zoom with Josh Grubbs at Black Lung Brewing. Since then he has opened his primary brewery and taproom in Round Lake Beach, and has expanded to a satellite taproom in Fox Lake beside beautiful Lake Nippersink. After our short recording hiatus, we wanted to restart our podcast episodes with a success story. We find out more on their first 3 years, how their brews have been refined, and hear lots of stories about the brewery and beer names. Guest co-host is ex-landlord John Karwoski, and BLB assistant brewer/metal band member Rob Noon is on hand as well. We recommend a visit if you haven't done so yet! CHEERS!

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Why wasn't preservation with the goal of potential future revival started earlier in history?, published by Andy McKenzie on January 17, 2024 on LessWrong. Cross-posted from my blog, Neurobiology Notes. John Hunter (1728-1793) did not have an especially promising start to his academic life. He was born the youngest of 10 children to a family living in the countryside near Glasgow. They lived in a two bedroom cottage and the children slept in box beds that were pulled out of the walls every night. He was stubborn, hated school, did not like to be taught reading or writing, would skip classes whenever he could, and quit formal education altogether at 13, the same year his father died. He said that he "totally rejected books," instead preferring to gain practical knowledge first hand. He spent his time helping with the family farm. When he was 20, he made the fateful decision to join his brother William Hunter's anatomy school in London as an assistant. maternal and fetal circulations are separate, invent the technique of proximal ligation to treat aneurysms, either inoculate himself or someone else with venereal disease purely in the name of science, coordinate the first documented artificial insemination, propose the gradual formation of new species due to random variations 70 years before Darwin, create a school providing lectures in physiology, make enemies with all of the other surgeons at his hospital, almost die when he was attacked by one of his many exotic animals, amass a huge collection of specimens that he spent nearly all his money on and that remains in London today, and become the person widely considered the founder of modern scientific surgery. a photo from the Hunterian museum in London I learned this all from Wendy Moore's excellent biography of John Hunter, The Knife Man: The Knife Man by Wendy Moore Although I'm a closet Anglophile, the main reason I picked this book up is because Hunter also seems to have been one of the first people, if not the first person, to seriously research suspended animation. Suspended animation is a hypothetical procedure in which a person or other animal could be preserved for a long period of time in a way that the procedure is known to be reversible, allowing for reanimation at the time of one's choosing. Suspended animation is not the same as cryonics, because in cryonics, it is not known whether the preservation will ever be reversible, so a cryonics procedure relies on the possibility of bootstrapped advances in future technology that might allow reversibility. Hunter was interested in suspended animation for a number of reasons, including because he was interested in the dividing line between life and death, and because he thought it might make him rich. He also thought that it might be practically useful: Till this time I had imagined that it might be possible to prolong life to any period by freezing a person in the frigid zone, as I thought all action and waste would cease until the body was thawed. I thought that if a man would give up the last ten years of his life to this kind of alternate oblivion and action, it might be prolonged to a thousand years; and by getting himself thawed every hundred years, he might learn what had happened during his frozen condition. In 1766, Hunter performed an experiment to test this. He placed two carp in a glass vessel with water. He then kept adding cold snow to the vessel. At first the snow repeatedly melted, but eventually the water around the fish froze. He thawed them slowly, but found they did "not recover action, so that they were really dead." Benjamin Franklin had similar ideas. In the cryonics community, Franklin's remarkable letter to a friend in 1773 is kind of famous: I have seen an instance of common flies preserved in a manner somewhat similar. They had been ...

We are back in the pub studio for this episode, which will be the last one until the end of January, as we are taking a short hiatus. We do have an all-star cast in the house with co-host Ken McMullen from Fox Republic Brewing, co-host Chuck Fort from Church Street Brewing, plus the head brewer from Church Street, Sean Gregor. The greater Chicagoland area hosts many of Illinois craft breweries, but there are plenty of downstate options to visit and enjoy. In this episode The Brit, and co-host Ken McMullen of Fox Republic, travel to Kankakee IL to visit founder and brewer Matt Strysik, who together with his wife Emily, co-own Knack Brewing located alongside the Kankakee River. This is a grass roots operation but Matt is producing extremely high quality, and very drinkable beers, tapping in to the tastes of the area clientele but also testing out the waters with some adjunct variants. Definitely worth a visit downstate!! Cheers!
This episode we start the podcast with an apology! We have overlooked BBGB for over 5 years, and now we are here to sample the brews and realize we definitely missed out on some good ones! Brewmaster Bob Salzman has turned around the brewery side of this gastropub, and is producing some well-made classic styles. We talk to him about the unique features of Hardware, the restaurant, and what it is like to have a hopfarm as part of the brewing side, one benefit being that his Harvest Ale is fresh and tasty! Cheers!!
If you are a homebrewer or a professional you have likely heard of Brülosophy, a website where they take the art of homebrewing beer to a new level with recipes, methods and their exciting 'Exbeeriments', which scientifically test our palates and push the boundaries of our perceptions of beer. As one of the main contributors to the site, Steve Thanos conducts these Exbeeriments, and in this episode he visits The Brit and co-host Ken McMullen down in the pub studios to put their palates to the test. As a long-standing member of the Plainfield Ale and Lager Enthusiasts (PALE) homebrew club, he brings a wealth of knowledge to the topic, and he's fresh off winning some medals at a local beer festival. Do The Brit and Ken pass the test? Tune in and found it in this fascinating look into the grass roots of craft beer! Cheers!!
Glen Ellyn IL is only a 15 minute drive from the pub studio and yet we have yet to visit their brewpub, Two Hound Red! So we have rectified that in this episode and we sit down with brewer Steve Woertendyke, just ahead of their Oktoberfest celebration, so we can intentionally sample the Oktoberfest offerings. Very impressed with the Marzen and the Smoked Marzen, plus the full liter steins are all sure to make the day a great success. Listen in and hear how 2HR got started and how Steve is now brewing great beers while the restaurant turns out fantastic dishes to accompany those brews. Definitely worth a trip out west...you won't be disappointed...Cheers!!
Our Labor Day weekend edition is a first for the podcast team as we visit the one and only non-alcoholic craft brewery in Illinois, Go Brewing. We sit down with Joe Chura, one of the co-founders and the President of GBC, and James Bigler, their head brewer. So at this weekend's barbecues, why not offer your designated drivers and non-drinkers an alternative, and perhaps your craft beer afficienados can try them as well! Listen in as we talk about Go's meteoric rise to be a leading provider of NA brews, while we sample some of their great offerings...Cheers!

Located in the old Flesk Brewing space in the Icehouse Mall in Barrington, IL, co-owners Mike DeMalpartida and lan Swanson welcome The Brit and co-host Ken McMullen into the taproom to find out what they are all about. After tasting the first sample brew, and then reading through their fantastic tap list, we were sold! We find out about how they came to be, and why they decided to take a more unique approach to their beer offerings. So, if you are looking for somewhere that has a different take on craft beers, then a trip to SBB should definitely be on your calendar. They already have a couple of their beers going on the Brit's list of top beers for 2023, so listen in and find out why! Cheers!
This week my normal co-host, Ken McMullen is on the other side of the mic as he is the interviewee, and we are visiting his new brewery project, Fox Republic Brewing. Joining him is his brewer, the VERY tall, Sam Walstaff, and The Brit chats to both of them about their newly opened watering hole. We are sampling their brews, including the range of Tequila Seltzers, their collabs, and their own-brewed offerings. The guys talk about all the challenges they faced getting ready to open, and some of the ones they face now, getting food trucks to show up for example! Friends of the podcast and owners of Broken Brix Fermentation Emporium, Ed and Sue Seaman, took a trip to Iceland and came back with craft beer galore, which they wanted to share with the podcast team! So, in this episode we get to taste some craft styles that are brewed with glacial water, and hear a little about their adventures in Viking country, including their 3-night attendance at the Wilco concert in the capital, Reykjavík. Some of the beers surprised us with their quality, and some not so much. Co-hosts and brewers, Chuck and Ken, are on and to pass on their professional comments. Skál!

Summary: Join Holly and Devin as they explore jolly ol' London town! Blimey! Not only is this city the only reason our co-hosts became friends in the first place, but they have a blast diving deeply into books set in the iconic city. While one book involves multiple dead bodies and the other involves multiple broken hearts, they unite around the unique character of London. Holly is a self-identified Anglophile and Devin struggles to remember romances set in the city because, frankly, she's too focused on the juicy deets of her novels. They agree, though, that unique cities like London add additional sensory layers to stories and a vivid sense of place. Topics Discussed: The Heart (3:01): Devin discussed One Day in December by Josie Silver, a novel that explores the role of destiny in our lives after the protagonist Laurie makes intense eye contact with a stranger at a bus stop. The problem? She's on the bus and he's on the outside, leaving Laurie to hunt all over London for him to no avail. Fast forward a year and Laurie's roommate Sarah brings her new boyfriend to a party - Jack, the “bus guy” himself! Devin's key takeaways were: This novel requires some suspension of disbelief for the precipitation of the plot - that 10 seconds of sustained eye contact could lead to years of love, loss, betrayal, and growth. But once you buy in, it's a worthwhile ride. Jack and Laurie as the focal couple are not always the most sympathetic, and Silver explores how complicated attraction, friendship, and lifestyle choices can be as we grow and evolve through our lives. Unlike many romances this novel spans 10 years, marked by Laurie's New Year's Resolutions that give the reader a vivid picture of how she, Jack, and Sarah are evolving in their unique love triangle. The Dagger (16:45): Holly discussed The Victoria Vanishes by Christopher Fowler, book six in the Peculiar Crimes Unit novels. In this installment, we follow Arthur Bryant and John May as they discover and then investigate the mysterious deaths of older women killed in crowded pubs - after which the pubs themselves disappear. And thus, “The octogenarian detectives ready themselves for the pub crawl of a lifetime.” Holly's key takeaways were: The Pubs that Bryant and May explore act as characters in the book and in London; they are all different and have their own rich histories and micro-communities. The book explores the idea that people should be able to feel safe and these strings of murders corrupt these social spaces. If you're tired of the many domestic thrillers or locked room style mysteries and want a mystery that's a bit more complicated, a bit slower and very unique, this is for you. Our protagonists Bryant and May have worked together for the last 50 years and have a clearly deep friendship and mutual respect. The book has an undertone of the Peculiar Crimes Unit's struggle to survive in the face of being undervalued and seen as useless - an authentic exploration of octogenarian life. Hot On the Shelf (32:41): Devin: The Madness of Crowds by Louise Penny Holly: A Phoenix First Must Burn by Patrice Caldwell What's Making Our Hearts Race (37:39): Devin: Amon Amarth Holly: Listening to deep-dive commentary on books she's read and already loves. Including but not limited to the podcasts Harry Potter and the Sacred Text, Hot and Bothered and From the Front Porch. At the time I am writing this, I personally know people who, are trying to survive in bomb shelters in Kyiv, and others who have taken up arms to defend this country. Here at The Conference Room our thoughts and prayers are with our friends and colleagues and the whole of the Ukrainian people. But thoughts and prayers are not enough. As President Kennedy said in the name of Thomas Burke, all it takes for evil to succeed is for good men to do nothing. So, let's do something. In the shownotes for this episode, and for every episode while the people of Ukraine are fighting for their country, we'll post links of how you can help: reputable organizations you can donate to that will help the Ukrainian people and reliable sources of information about what's happening on the ground. As individuals, we may not be able to stand up to Putin ourselves, but let's all do something and not let evil triumph on our watch. Thank you.
