Daily Emunah Podcast - Daily Emunah By Rabbi David Ashear

How is it possible for a couple to have children after an expert doctor tells them that it is impossible? How is it possible for a person to buy his own home without having any money to his name? How is it possible for a school to stay afloat when it has no money left in its bank account, and it's in debt? The answer to all these questions is the same: Hashem runs the world and He doesn't care about doctor's assessments and He doesn't need other people's money to give them what they need. A man spoke at the A-Time Shas-a-thon saying that he had been married for five years without children, and then he and his wife waited three months to get an appointment with a top specialist in Manhattan. After the doctor reviewed their case he told them, “You have two options. Either adopt or learn to live without children, because there's no way you will ever have children.” The man went on to say he ended up having a full house of children and, baruch Hashem, today he is enjoying his grandchildren. There was a story printed up in the Ami Magazine about a couple who were both ba'aleh teshuva with no family support on either side. They lived paycheck to paycheck, barely affording the rent of their apartment. One day they received the news that their apartment building had been sold and the new owner gave them four months to leave. After three and a half months of searching for a new apartment with everything they were finding to be smaller and further away from where they wanted to be, not to mention much more expensive, they were left with a dilemma. They only had $2300 in their bank account and nowhere to go with just two weeks before they had to leave. They felt trapped. A few days later, they were shown an apartment in a relatively new three family building. It was in a good location and very spacious – perfect for their growing family. The problem was the rent was way too high for them and the owner was unwilling to negotiate, saying he was really looking for a buyer for the whole building for $1 million. He offered this man and his wife and their family a one year contract at the high rent that they couldn't afford, or they could purchase the whole building. That evening, the man went to learn with his nightly chavruta and seemed a little out of it. When his chavruta asked him what was wrong, he told him the problem. His chavruta asked him, “Who is the owner of that building?” When he heard the name he said, “Oh, I know him very well and I know why he is trying to sell the building – because he owes me $1 million.” In the end, this chavruta made a deal with that owner and enabled this man to buy the building and get a mortgage for which he cosigned on. He made the initial down payment of $500,000 by forgiving that portion of the debt. Then he got a mortgage for the man for the other $500,000. The man was able to make the monthly payments of the mortgage from the rent he got form the other two apartments and he paid his chavruta an affordable monthly payment for the down payment that he made. He is now the proud owner of a home, and he didn't have any money to pay for it. Another man told me he runs a school for special needs children and the tuition is not affordable. The parents pay as much as they could and eventually the school gets reimbursed from the Board of Education. During Covid, the Board ran out of money and the parents didn't have money to pay either. This meant that the school was going to have to shut down. The man said, “I have seen Hashem time and time enable this institution to continue when logically it was impossible. I know He is not going to let this happen.” With just two weeks before they were going to have to close their doors, a large business offered to take over the payroll of the entire school. They had enough money to be patient to wait and get paid back by the Board of Education. The heads of the school used to have to spend their days and nights collecting funds from the community, even when everything was running smoothly. And now, when they were experiencing their most difficult time of all, they are not going to have to raise another penny, Hashem took care of everything in the blink of an eye. Even what seems impossible is possible because Hashem is running the world and He is not bound by any rules.

We talk about how recent changes in society have influenced people to either grow closer to religion and religious morals while at the same time driving others further away. Daily Emunah Podcast - Daily Emunah By Rabbi David Ashear

It says in the Midrash that if Aharon HaKohen would have known that it was going to say about him in the Torah, “וראך ושמח בלבו – that when he saw Moshe, his younger brother, after he was chosen to be the leader of the Jewish People, that Aharon was going to greet him and be happy for him in his heart – he would have greeted Moshe with a band playing instruments to celebrate with him. It says further in the Midrash, if Boaz would have known that it was going to say about him that he gave Rut toasted grain to eat, he would have given her fattened calves instead. Of course, Aharon and Boaz don’t care about publicity and honor. The explanation is, they knew the Torah only writes the most significant deeds, the ones that have ramifications for all of history. Aharon did millions of good deeds in his lifetime. He was happy for everyone when they received good fortune, so he didn’t consider the act of being happy for his younger brother to be so special. But when he found out that Moshe was not going to accept the job of being the leader unless he was happy for him, he realized that this act was the catalyst for the Jewish people being led out of Egypt. If he would have known how significant that act was, he would have done it even better. Boaz, as well, did countless good deeds in his lifetime. The one mentioned in Megilat Rut about giving her the toasted grain was of such significance, because that deed started a chain of events which ended up with Boaz marrying Rut and producing the Mashiach. If he would have known how significant that deed was, he would have done it better. Hashem gives all of us opportunities to do good deeds. We have no idea of the significance of each one. Therefore, we should grab the opportunities and do each one the best way possible. There was a story recently published in Ami Magazine about a sofer from Israel who we’ll call Natan. He tried hard to keep his family together, but his wife tried equally hard to break it apart, and she won. She felt that she married beneath her standards, and after years of bitterness, they finally got divorced. The court ruled that Natan had to pay an exorbitant amount of child support. He worked overtime to try and make his payments, but after several months, he just couldn’t keep up with them . His ex-wife took him back to court, and he was sentenced to three months in jail for failing to pay. Initially, they were granted joint custody of the children, but she was doing everything in her power to take sole custody. She told everybody how bad he was, until even his relatives started turning on him. While Natan was in jail, someone noticed him learning from a sefer and asked if he could teach him something. Before long, another person joined them. By the end of the week, Natan was giving a Torah class in jail to ten people. They learned emunah, Gemara, and halacha. Almost a month into his three-month sentence, Natan received word that he was going to be allowed to go home to celebrate the holiday of Shavuot. It was a minimum-security prison, and when he first entered, he filled out a form to request such a leave. He had forgotten about it, since they had told him he would need pull to actually bring it to fruition, and that was something he didn’t have. He was so excited now to be able to spend time with his children over the holiday. When the other inmates found out about it, they were disheartened. They told him, “We have permission to stay up all night learning Torah on Shavuot. Who’s going to teach us if you leave?” Natan felt bad, but he wasn’t going to turn down going home for the holiday. They tried again and again to persuade him to stay, until he finally said okay. Indeed, it was a very uplifting Shavuot for all of them. After Shavuot, some police officers entered the prison and charged Natan with another crime. His ex-wife had been bruised, and she charged him with physically abusing her. If convicted, it would result in a much longer sentence for Natan and would most probably ruin his reputation permanently, allowing his wife full custody of the children. Natan asked when the alleged incident took place. The report said it was during Shavuot. The prison warden then said, “He was here that day. It couldn’t have been him.” It was then that his ex-wife was caught making up falsehoods. She was the one who had arranged for Natan to be able to get out of jail on Shavuot, just to set him up and ruin him, to take custody of the children. But the good deed of Natan, sacrificing of himself to teach others, not only saved his relationship with his children, it gave him back his good reputation, and now everyone believed his side, and not hers. Hashem gave Natan an opportunity in that jail to sacrifice and do a good deed. He could never have imagined how rewarding it would eventually be for him. We should always grab every opportunity Hashem gives us and do every good deed in the best way possible.

The 'Yiddish Voice' Podcast

Interview with the reporter known as Jake Turx, Whitehouse correspondent for Ami Magazine. His question about anti-semitism at the first press conference of President Donald Trump on Feb. 16 caused a stir because Trump became angry at him, cutting him off, telling him to sit down, and accusing him of dishonesty. "A Jewish Reporter Got to Ask Trump a Question.", read a New York Times headline on Feb. 17, 2017, "It Didn't Go Well."
