Standig Room Only: A show about the Washington Football Team and D.C. sports
The Athletic's Ben Standig is back for a new episode with guests Tom Haberstroh (Meadowlark Media/"Pack Your Knives" podcast) and Chris Russell (Team 980) to talk the Washington Football Team, the Wizards coaching search and "Top Chef." After Ben opens the show with a recap of his LA vacation, Chris joins the discussion (12:40) for thoughts on the WFT including the depths of Ron Rivera's power and how might he use it ahead of the 2021 NFL season. Then the conversation shifts to the Wizards and food competition shows. Ben and Tom break down the Wizards' roster paths and head coaching scenarios, and whether the combination suggests there's a rebuild coming. Since Tom talks weekly about Top Chef, they also share thoughts on the just-concluded season and compare contestants to NBA players.
Today's special guest on Attendance Bias is Phish lyricist and Co-Founder of Osiris Media, Tom Marshall. Tom chose to discuss the 35-minute version of "David Bowie" from December 29, 1994 at the Providence Civic Center, in Providence, RI. Most of us know Tom for his lyrics, and there's plenty of information out there about Tom as a lyricist--he has been very open about his relationship with Phish, his lyrics, and more on his podcast, Under the Scales, which has now morphed into a new podcast called Undermine...but we'll get to that later.Since Tom has already said plenty about his lyrics, I wanted to hear more about his life and history as a podcaster; about Under the Scales, Undermine, and Osiris media. And of course, I wanted to know his thoughts about that incredible, all-time version of "David Bowie."As a huge Phish fan, it was a thrill to speak with Tom. As a podcaster, it was fascinating to hear about the history of his success. I am an unabashed fan of Under the Scales, Undermine, and plenty of other Osiris Media podcasts, including Phemale-Centrics, whose host, Dawneebee, was a guest on episode 4 of Attendance Bias. I had a natural curiosity to hear about his podcasting background, So let’s join Tom Marshall to talk about podcasting, Undermine, Osiris Media, and “David Bowie” from 12/29/94 at the Providence Civic Center.

This episode takes us back to the Tri-State area (the Cincinnati Metro Area), where Episode 147 took us in an overview of the Bill and Peggy Stephenson murder investigation out of Kenton County Kentucky. The Stephensons were murdered in their townhome on a quiet suburban street over Memorial Day weekend in 2011 under strange circumstances. Across the other side of the Ohio River, to the northwest and about half an hour’s drive from the Stephenson residence, sits Hidden Valley Indiana, where in 2018, 73 year-old Tom Biedenharn (known to friends and neighbors as “Big Tom” because of his imposing physical size at 6-feet-7-inches and his oversized, smiling, gregarious personality) was living in happy, active retirement. A former basketball star in his high school and college playing days, Big Tom was spending his golden years in service to his community. Ever on the move, Tom not only his money donating to help those in need – even more impressively, he spent hours and hours of his time volunteering, and counseling ex-convicts and other forgotten souls through life coaching and personal interaction. By all accounts, Tom Biedenharn was beloved. Which is what makes what happened on Memorial Day weekend 2018 – exactly seven years after the Stephenson murders – so puzzling. After speaking with a family member on the morning of the Saturday before Memorial Day, Tom was not heard from again. But this was not unusual, as he was often out of contact due to his busy schedule – and he had another place in the country where he and his girlfriend often got away. The neighbor next door had voluntarily closed Tom’s open garage door on that Saturday, seeing it had been open and figuring Tom had left without closing it. But when Memorial Day itself came around with no sign of Tom, the neighbor called a family member to report his concern. And when the family member arrived, it was noted that the door from the garage to the house was completely locked – something Tom never did – making it impossible to get inside without breaking in. Then when the family member walked around and looked through the back sliding glass door, Tom could be seen, lying on his back, on the floor inside the home. Since Tom had recently undergone minor surgery, the family member assumed Tom had passed out and needed medical attention – and called 911. But when the door from the garage was finally broken down, it became clear that Tom was no longer alive. Evidence soon indicated that he had been murdered, and that more than one person had been involved. Melissa is joined on this episode by Detective Sgt. Tom Baxter and Detective Brian Earls of the Indiana State Police’s District 42, both of whom have been involved with Big Tom’s case from the very beginning. Listen in as Melissa and Dets. Baxter and Earls go over the facts of the case, as well as the puzzling questions…does the Memorial Day coincidental date (as well as several other similarities) somehow tie Big Tom’s murder to the Stephenson murders seven years previous? Could Tom have known his attacker(s)? Did Tom’s work with former convicts somehow bring unwanted trouble into his world? And how could ANYONE want to harm such a loving, caring soul, whose only mission in life was to help others? If you have any information on the Biedenharn case, you can call (877) 477-1847; the Indiana State Police at (812) 689-5000; or CrimeStoppers at (513) 352-3040.
Tom Bilyeu is the co-founder and President of Quest Nutrition, the second fastest growing privately owned company in the United States (currently valued at over $1 billion). He is also the founder of Impact Theory, a show dedicated to helping you achieve your limitless potential. Favorite Success Quote “Do and believe that which moves you towards your goals” Never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never—in nothing, great or small, large or petty—never give in except to convictions of honor and good sense. Key Points 1. Find That Thing That Makes You Feel Alive We live in an age of unprecedented freedom. Never before in the history of the human race have there been so many options available to so many members of the general populace. In the 21st century, our options and opportunities, like our potential, are nearly limitless. Traveling across the globe is easier than it’s ever been, growing your brand and authority has never been so scalable, and the ability to build a wildly successful business is now open to anybody with access to the internet. And yet… Despite the tremendous number of resources and the almost limitless amount of opportunity circulating the modern economy, recent polls still indicate that nearly 70% of the American workforce is disengaged with their career! How can this be? In an era of unparalleled choices and opportunity more than two-thirds of the entire nation spends 40+ hours of their week doing something they hate! While every individual is different and each circumstance is unique, I personally believe that the primary reason for this disconnect is simple. People are scared. They are scared that pursuing their dreams will be hard, they are scared that following their passions will be too difficult, and they are scared that they will fail. But guess what? Regardless of the path you choose to pursue, there will be challenges, there will obstacles, and there will be hardships. The struggle is an inevitable part of the human condition. No matter what path you choose to pursue, you will face challenges and trials, you will fail, and you will probably want to quit more than just once. But, if you decide to pursue that thing that makes you come alive, the thing that lights a fire inside of you, the thing that you are willing to devote the rest of your life to… Nothing will stop you. 2. Tailor Your Activities to Achieve Cognitive Optimization Since Tom founded one of the fastest growing health and nutrition companies in the world, it should come as little surprise that one of his “Secrets to success” is methodically optimizing his cognitive performance. No matter what goal you are pursuing, you will need to be operating at full blast in order to effectively make decisions, execute on ideas, and move the needle forward. And the quickest way to improve your own performance is to optimize the performance of the gray matter in between your ears. But how does one actually do this? How do you totally optimize your mind without spending thousands of dollars on supplementation, smart drugs, and crazy bio-hacking equipment? The truth is surprisingly unsexy. For Tom, it all starts with sleep. He is in bed every night by 9 p.m. and only wakes up whenever he feels rested and ready to attack the day. This is crucial to ensuring optimal brain performance since the majority of memory, association, and cellular repair happens while we are asleep. After optimizing his sleep, Tom will then head to the gym every single morning, flooding his brain and body with dopamine, endorphins, and endocannabinoids and getting his mind and body into a peak state. With his workout concluded, Tom will sit in silence to spend time “Thinkitating” which is, as Tom puts it, “Applying the afterglow of meditation to solve the greatest challenges in your life.” Basically, after concluding a short meditation session using Mark Divine’s box breathing technique, he will sit back and consciously contemplate the greatest challenges he’s facing in his life allowing his mind and subconscious to search for an answer to the problem. Then, with his exercise and thinkitation done, Tom hits the books and will consciously spend an hour or more each morning filling his mind with ideas from the best and brightest individuals on the planet. Tom attributes much of his success to this “Cognitive optimization morning routine”. It’s not complicated, it doesn’t require much equipment, and it can be done from anywhere in the world. If you want a more detailed description of the Impact Theory Morning Routine, you can check out this article for more info. 3. Always Focus on Delivering More Value than Expected Imagine for a moment that you are purchasing a product and deciding between two different companies. For the sake of the argument (and since Tom is the founder of a fitness nutrition company) let’s assume that the companies in question are selling a muscle gain supplement. After years of research company A found a formula that helps their clients get results and they decided to follow the age-old advice “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it”. Company B, however, is never satisfied and they continue dumping thousands of dollars a month into sourcing higher quality ingredients, finding new ways to improve their formula, and delivering more value to the end customer. Who do you think will win? Even though Company A has a “good” product that provides real value to their customers, Company B is unwilling to settle for “good enough”. And let me tell you, one of the biggest traps that entrepreneurs fall into is the trap of “Good enough”. Because the second that you stop improving your product, service, or experience somebody else who is hungrier, more motivated, and more driven than you are will steal your customers and leave you in the dust. You must constantly improve the value that you bring to the marketplace and look for new and unique ways to expand your services to help more people. Because at the end of the day, you will be paid in direct proportion to the amount of value that you give. And if you do more than you are paid for now, you will be paid for more than you do later. 4. Email is the Greatest Thief of Productivity While it might seem a little bit superfluous to devote an entire key point of this interview to the topic of email, I want you to consider for a moment that the average American is estimated to spend a total of 3.2 hours per day just checking work related emails (this doesn’t include personal correspondence). That’s almost half of their work day devoted entirely to the largely pointless act of reaching inbox zero. During our interview, Tom admitted to having over 6,000 unopened emails sitting in his inbox and told us that he will typically look at his emails only twice a week for a few minutes. According to conventional wisdom, there’s no way that he could effectively run a successful company spending so little time devoted to email, and yet he’s the Co-founder of one of the nation’s fastest growing companies. If you want to become truly successful at the game of business, then you must learn to focus only on profit-producing activities. Email is not one of those. 5. You Will Never Eliminate Pride, So Use It While many philosophers and teachers preach the importance of eliminating pride, anyone with a basic understanding of the human condition knows that pride is an inherent part of our existence and will never be removed. So if we cannot eliminate our pride, then what are we supposed to do? The simple answer? Use it. Pride and ego can actually be a phenomenal tool if they are focused on the right things. Specifically, learning to develop immense pride around your focus on the processes, not your outcomes. What do I mean by this? Well, instead of priding yourself on how smart you are (which will likely lead to careless mistakes) develop immense pride in your commitment to your education. Instead of priding yourself on your physique, strength, or endurance (all of which can be taken away with one injury) develop immense pride in your physical work ethic and desire to improve your body. Learn to take pride in who you are instead of what you are and you will find that pride becomes an asset instead of a liability.
Tom Libelt was born in Communist Poland and escaped to the US when he was 11 in the early ’90s. At 9, his father sold products at soccer stadiums in Eastern Europe, where he learned the hard way how to sell and how not to be hustled. He is hyper-focused on helping course creators market their online courses. “Becoming a big fish in a smaller pond often is not only more profitable but will make your life easier.” Tom Libelt Worst investment ever In his early 30s, Tom was running a reasonably successful SEO business. Back then, it was easy to rank on Google using what people today consider as blackhat methods. Tom would pay bloggers to get backlinks. Tom had a team of 14 writers at the time, spending a lot of time, money, and effort getting into these blogs. Their goal was to get 50 backlinks pointing to a website every month to keep it ranking higher. While he had other tactics, this model worked the best. Google gets smart After riding the wave for a long while, Google smartened up and was out for businesses doing shady stuff. Google destroyed almost all the blackhat networks. They looked at IP addresses and de-indexed them. Thousands of SEO companies were pretty much back to square one. Tom now had a massive team of writers with nowhere to put the blog posts. Trying option B Tom learned about Amazon Kindle (e-books) at around this time and decided to see if he could make a business out of it. He had a ready team of writers anyway. Tom told his team to pick topics of their choice, do keyword research and write up short books of about 30 to 40 pages, then use images to fill in some gaps and just publish them on Kindle. Competition at the time was little and so getting into Kindle was pretty easy. Striking gold About three months later, Tom’s writers broke even. So he thought this could work. Tom would now sit down with the team for two days, go over hundreds of topics and then pick the best to run with. Eventually, the team was pumping out about 250 books per month, and for about four or five years, the money coming in was quite good. Kindle shakes things up Making money on Kindle was pretty straightforward. You’d get 70% of sales made, and $1 for every book rented. Tom’s business was making a killing by pushing rentals. One day, out of the blues, Kindle killed the rental payment model. Now they would focus on pages read. Turning to blackhat tactics again After the new payment model, Tom turned to a blackhat marketing tactic where he told people in the introduction of the books to skip to the end to get the “Golden Nugget” and then come back to the beginning of the book. So everyone would just go straight up to the end of the book, and Tom would get paid. While this still got him money, it just wasn’t as lucrative. Closing the doors for good Tom’s marketing tactic worked for a while then one day, without any notice, his Kindle accounts got shut down. There was no explanation given, and he was not allowed to appeal the decision. Since Tom had no control over Kindle, there was nothing much he could do than accept the loss and move on. Tom had invested so much in the Kindle business just to have it go away overnight simply because his business model relied entirely on someone else’s business. Lessons learned Easy come, easy go Taking the easier way out may bear you fruit, but it won’t last long. You are better off working hard so that you can reap the fruits longer. Have control over your business Have your own business structure. Don’t depend on other people’s infrastructure. Always ask yourself where the control is? Who owns the control in the situation? If you don’t have control, then it’s not a good business idea. Andrew’s takeaways Build your own assets You have to build your assets instead of relying on others. It’s hard to do this, but it makes your business idea more solid. Know when you are riding a wave There are many ways to make money, and sometimes you will be taken advantage of, but always know when you’re riding a wave so that when it comes crashing, you’re not caught off guard. Actionable advice Keep your team small, if possible. Keep your schedule open because if you don’t have time to think and analyze your business, it won’t grow. Lastly, specialize. No. 1 goal for the next 12 months Tom’s number one goal for the next 12 months is to look at opportunities in the online course creation spaces so that he can diversify. For instance, he’s looking at how he can make more info products. “The best opportunities are something that you either kind of figure out by yourself by looking at what’s working, or just kind of come to you during your thinking process.” Tom Libelt Connect with Wilbert Tom Libelt LinkedIn Twitter Facebook Website Andrew’s books How to Start Building Your Wealth Investing in the Stock Market My Worst Investment Ever 9 Valuation Mistakes and How to Avoid Them Transform Your Business with Dr.Deming’s 14 Points Andrew’s online programs Valuation Master Class Women Building Wealth The Build Your Wealth Membership Group Become a Great Presenter and Increase Your Influence Transform Your Business with Dr. Deming’s 14 Points Connect with Andrew Stotz: astotz.com LinkedIn Facebook Instagram Twitter YouTube My Worst Investment Ever Podcast Further reading mentioned Michael Covel (2009) Trend Following, 5th Edition: How to Make a Fortune in Bull, Bear and Black Swan Markets

Global Wellness is our DIVINE MISSION, Scaler Energy kills COVID-19 Host Ryan Treasure and guest Tom Paladino discuss Scalar Energy, it’s origin, how it impacts human biology, and how it could remove the world's dependence on fossil fuels. Tom has been helping people with pathogenic infections for more than 25 years. At a young age, he was inspired by various scientists to dig deeper into the understanding of Scalar Energy. After years of trial and error, Tom invented a technique using Scalar Energy called Scalar Light. Scalar Light can transmute pathogens quickly and painlessly. The way that these techniques works is by collecting photographs from those who want to be relieved from the symptoms of pathogenic diseases. He then uses a modality he developed using Scalar Light which creates passive light energy that influences the human biofield. This causes pathogenic infection to disassemble or fall apart. Scalar Light is even able to stop viruses, bacteria, parasites, and more. Once the pathogen disease is disassembled, symptoms from the infection will decrease and start to go away altogether. Since Tom has started using Scalar Light to help those with pathogenic diseases he has received nothing but praise from his patients.
