After disappointing sales for Weezer's second album, leader Rivers Cuomo went into complete isolation and wrote an incredible 121 new songs -- 10 of which were recorded for the band's next album, produced by Ric Ocasek of the Cars. That album, popularly known as the Green album, turned the band's fortunes around and became a huge success; especially here in Canada where it reached number 2 on the charts. Randy Renaud has its story for its 24th anniversary on the Chronicles of Rock.
The Cars' self-titled 1978 debut record changed the world of power pop forever. Guitarist and co-vocalist Ric Ocasek penned all the tunes, but lead guitarist Elliott Easton transformed them with his tasteful 6-string stylings. This time on Shred With Shifty, Easton sits down with Chris Shiflett to show him how to play the solo from “My Best Friend's Girl.” Born in Brooklyn before winding up in Long Island, Easton washed dishes to save up for his first 1971 Fender Telecaster, and after high school he studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he picked up key theory and technique that he still holds dear. Reared on country and rockabilly players like Roy Buchanan, Jesse Ed Davis, Gram Parsons, James Burton, and Roy Nichols, Easton brought a slick twang to Ocasek's new-wave gems. Easton tells Shifty how the band came to work with producer Roy Thomas Baker in London, while crashing at a label-provided mansion nearby and driving a loaned Jaguar and Land Rover to the sessions. Easton's celebrated leads didn't take long to come together. “On my mother's memory, I did all my guitar parts in a day and a half,” he says. All he had with him was a 1978 or '77 Telecaster with a Bartolini Firebird-style mini humbucker in it, a red Les Paul, a Martin acoustic, and two effects: the brand-new Boss CE-1 and a Morley EVO-1 Echo Volume pedal. His amp of choice in those days? An Ampeg VT-22 or VT-40. After running down his giddy-up guitar parts from “Best Friend's Girl,” Easton talks about which modern players impress him, why he doesn't consider himself a shredder, and the experience of working with Mutt Lange: “I spent as much time tuning with him as playing!” If you're able to help, here are some charities aimed at assisting musicians affected by the fires in L.A: https://guitarcenterfoundation.org https://www.cciarts.org/relief.html https://www.musiciansfoundation.org https://fireaidla.org https://www.musicares.org https://www.sweetrelief.org Full Video Episodes: http://volume.com/shifty Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/podcast/id1690423642 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4B8BSR0l78qwUKJ5gOGIWb iHeart: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-shred-with-shifty-116270551/ Pandora: https://www.pandora.com/podcast/shred-with-shifty/PC:1001071314 Follow Chris Shiflett: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/chrisshiflettmusic Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/shifty71 TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@chris.shiflett Twitter: https://twitter.com/chrisshiflett71 Website: http://www.chrisshiflettmusic.com Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/5tv5SsSRqR7uLtpKZgcRrg?si=26kWS1v2RYaE4sS7KnHpag Producer: Jason Shadrick Executive Producers: Brady Sadler and Jake Brennan for Double Elvis Engineering support by Matt Tahaney and Matt Beaudion Video Editor: Addison Sauvan Graphic Design: Megan Pralle Special thanks to Jon Romeo, Michelle Yoon, Chris Peterson, Greg Nacron, and the entire Volume.com crew.

This week is all about bands playing other bands' songs… In fact, we're going to listen to songs that many different artists have covered; compare them, and then ask, “Who did it better???”. In this episode, we showcase the diversity of how a band can take a hit that you've heard a million times and put their own spin on it. Who do you think did it best? What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. These are songs you are probably familiar with, but maybe not these versions. In any case, we got ya covered! Songs this week include:Overwhelming Colorfast – “She Said, She Said (The Beatles)” from Overwhelming Colorfast(1992)Gov't Mule – “She Said, She Said (The Beatles)” from Dose (1998) Big Wreck – “Good Times Roll (The Cars)” from Bag Of Tricks (2013)Warrior Soul – “Good Times Roll (The Cars)” from Cocaine & Other Good Stuff (2020)Halestorm – “Heathens (Twenty One Pilots)” from ReAniMate 3.0: The CoVeRs eP (2017)Wolves At The Gate – “Heathens (Twenty One Pilots)” from Lost In Translation (2023)Susanna Hoffs & Matthew Sweet – “Cinnamon Girl (Neil Young)” from Under The Covers, Vol. 1 (2006)Type O Negative – “Cinnamon Girl (Neil Young)” from October Rust (1996)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/inobscuria/og-shopCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/
The Talking Heads is known as one of the more quirky bands of the 70's and 80's, and terribly innovative in their approach to both music and performance. Consisting of Tina Weymouth on bass, Chris Frantz on drums, Jerry Harrison on keyboards and guitar, and fronted by David Byrne on vocals and guitar, the Talking Heads helped to shape the landscape of alternative and new wave rock through the 80's and 90's. They really hit mainstream consciousness with their fifth album called "Speaking in Tongues" in 1983. They followed this up with the live album "Stop Making Sense," which showcased the elaborate stage setups and their visual presence, complete with Byrne's iconic "big suit" fashion wear.Little Creatures was their sixth studio album and the best selling album of the group's career. The Talking Heads toned down their experimental tendencies on this one in favor of a more stripped-down, accessible approach. While there are still elements of art music and new wave present in the tracks, they play a more whimsical role. The songs blend in pop, folk, and country influences as well, giving the album a bright, catchy feel in addition to the wit and quirkiness for which the group was known. The album cover was created by artist Howard Finster, and incorporates themes of Americana and everyday life. This complemented the songs well, and was selected by Rolling Sone magazine as the album cover of the year. The group would go on to produce two more studio albums before disbanding in 1991. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.Show co-founder Brian Dickhute is back to present this album in Bruce's absence for today's podcast. The Lady Don't MindThere's a certain amount of weirdness that is difficult to explain in the lyrics of just about every Talking Heads song, and this is no exception. This reggae-tinged song talks about a lady who is hard to pin down or figure out. "Last time she jumped out the window, well, she only turned and smiled. You might think she would say something, but you'd have to wait a while." Perfect WorldWhile most songs were written by David Byrne, this one features lyrics composed years earlier by drummer Chris Frantz. It is a deeper cut, and a mini-love story. Stay Up LateThis track was the fourth single released from the album. It is a song about Byrne's sister's baby, and describes an adult keeping the baby up late despite the consequences, just to have fun and enjoy this new life. Road to NowhereThis song was released as a single, and went to number 25 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. Byrne describes it as "a song that presented a resigned, even joyful look at doom." The gospel choir that leads off the track was added after the song was concluded to complete what is essentially a two-chord song. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Soul Finger by the Bar-Kays (from the motion picture Spies Like Us)Chevy Chase and Dan Aykroyd star in this spy comedy where novice spies are sent into the Soviet Union.STAFF PICKS:West End Girls by Pet Shop BoysLynch starts the staff picks with a song about class and pressures of city life in London, inspired by a T.S. Eliot poem. It was released twice as a single, once in April 1984 when it became a club hit, and this version as a re-recorded single in October 1985. It went to number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.It's Not Love by DokkenWayne takes us in a more hair metal direction with a head banger tune from Dokken's third album, "Under Lock and Key." This was the third single released from the album. The video contains scenes where the band is playing from a flat bed truck, and was actually recorded on the road. They received several tickets during the process, despite having permission to film.Magic Power by TriumphRob features a Canadian power trio from their live double album, “Stages.” Originally recorded on their studio album, “Allied Forces,” the song describes the healing power of music. It is one of the group's signature songs, and the live format gives a good sense of the band's chemistry on stage.Tonight She Comes by The CarsBrian closes out the staff picks with a previously unreleased song from the Cars' Greatest Hits album, released in October 1985. Ric Ocasek wrote the song, and originally intended it for his solo album, but brought it to the group instead. It was their fourth and last single to be a top 10 hit. For many years Paulina Porizkova was the most recognized face in fashion & beauty - from her iconic Sports Illustrated cover to being the face of Estee Lauder. When she married rock star Ric Ocastek from the iconic band, The Cars. From the outside looking in, it seemed like she was living the dream. To look at her, she really did seem like the woman who had it all. But while Paulina was as visible as you could be…she didn't feel like she was being heard. Not by the photographers and fashion people, not by producers and directors, and not by her husband, Ric. But then, during COVID, she became known to a whole new generation of women for an unlikely reason…crying on Instagram. And as you're about to hear - Paulina had a lot of really good reasons to cry. (But, she also gets the last laugh). When Paulina hit her low point, she shared her grief and pain - and tears - with Instagram. As you'll hear, Paulina had a lot of reasons to cry (and a lot of new reasons to laugh). You can follow Paulina on Instagram here. You can order Paulina's book, No Filter, here. Alex and Jordan don their finest sweaters and Buddy Holly glasses to explore one of the touchstones of '90s alternative rock. Together they discuss the enigma known as Rivers Cuomo, touching on how his tumultuous upbringing inspired tracks like "Say It Ain't So" and "My Name is Jonas," why he was disappointed that Weezer weren't heralded as the next Nirvana, and the time he replaced all of his newly-fired guitarist's parts in a single session. The TMI guys also share the (slightly corny) original lyrics to "Buddy Holly," explain how Henry Winkler saved Spike Jonze's famous 'Happy Days'-themed video, and the adorable bond between the band and their producer, Cars legend Ric Ocasek — plus the many reasons why Jordan's beloved Beach Boys are the secret MVPs of this record. Everything Will Be Alright in the End Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine Two songs into Everything Will Be Alright in the End, Rivers Cuomo sings "we belong in the rock world," a repudiation of the big beat experimentation of Raditude, a 2009 record that found Weezer working with such pop producers as Dr. Luke and Butch Walker. Weezer fans eager for Pinkerton, Pt. 2 are often quick to bristle at Cuomo's experimentations, so when the guitarist sings that they're "rockin' out like it's '94," he's not only not lying -- they went so far as to once again hire Ric Ocasek, the producer of the group's debut, to helm this ninth studio album -- but he's reassuring his audience that he's left all those pounding dance beats behind. The weird thing is, Weezer already shook off the ghost of Raditude via 2010's quickly released indie Hurley, so the emphasis on the group returning to rock feels a little odd, but Everything Will Be Alright in the End does trump its immediate predecessor by being bigger, bolder, slicker, and stickier than Hurley. Some of this is indeed due to the presence of Ocasek. His exacting production, anchored as much in pummeling arena rock as new wave pop, polishes and preserves Cuomo's quirks, but it's also true that Rivers has decided to indulge in his eccentricities once again. Take away the woolly mammoth-sized guitars and "Back to the Shack," with its overt references to "In the Garage," and Everything Will Be Alright in the End doesn't feel especially like early Weezer, not with the dexterous syncopation of "I've Had It Up to Here" providing a midpoint palate-cleanser and a neo-prog rock suite concluding the proceedings. By having the record follow these twisty detours, Cuomo provides a counterpoint to the classicist pop Weezer pursue elsewhere, but even such succinct, sculpted pop as "The British Are Coming," "Ain't Got Nobody," "Cleopatra," and "Go Away" (the latter a duet with Best Coast's Bethany Cosentino) never feels like a desperate scramble back home. Rather, a feeling of acceptance underpins Everything Will Be Alright in the End: there's a sense that Weezer made another record of massive, hooky rock not only because that's what the fans want but because they know it's what they do best. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/comics-in-motion-podcast/message
Time to step up on that high horse for a second. Ahem... there's a severe lack of bands these days, and in our sad estimation, the concept of the band has been devalued to the detriment of modern music. We know some of the biggest rock stars of all time from their bands, and while some band members have been able to make a go at it as solo artists, others... not as much. These are the most famous one hit wonders ever, but we're glad they at least had the one. Sir Jeff Axelrod, our expatriate friend joins for the conclusion of our discussion of the greatest SOLO ONE HIT WONDERS of all time. The year 1985 would find the band R.E.M. in transition between college band success and the mainstream powerhouse they were to become in future years. The quartet of Michael Stipe on vocals, Mike Mills on bass and vocals, Peter Buck on guitar, and Bill Berry on percussion and backing vocals were moving towards a greater variety of instrumentation and a bit more experimentation with their third studio album, Fables of the Reconstruction. The album actually has two names, as "Fables of the Reconstruction" was the name if you held the cassette or album with one side up, and if you flipped it over the name appeared as "Reconstruction of the Fables." The suggestion of the name "Reconstruction" came from Michael Stipes' father who was a carpenter. It is also a loaded term in the American South from which the Athens, Georgia band hails — “Reconstruction” is the period of time immediately following the American Civil War when the South was being brought back into the Union. The songs on the album have a darker sound than earlier works, and the lyrics draw from Southern Gothic works. This was the first album recorded outside the U.S., as the band traveled to London to work at Livingston Studios with producer Joe Boyd. While the singles from the album would not be considered hits in the United States, the album reached number 28 on the US Billboard 200 chart, and number 35 on the UK Albums Chart. It would feature two singles, “Driver 8' and“Can't Get There from Here,” which would become well known over time.Rob brings us this transitional album for today's podcastDriver 8The second single released from the album refers to the Southern Crescent train line. It ran under the Southern Railway until 1979 when Amtrak bought them out, and continues as the Amtrak Crescent today. “And the train conductor says take a break, Driver 8.”Green Grow the RushesThis deeper cut was written as a pact between Michael Stipe and Natalie Merchant of 10,000 Maniacs, relating to the poor treatment of indigenous peoples and migrant workers. “Green grow the rushes, go. The compass points the workers home.”Maps and LegendsInspired by preacher and Southern folk artist Howard Finster, this song uses the reading of a map as a metaphor for reading a person. Like the map reveals stories in little symbols on it, people are the accumulation of their experiences and stories. Can't Get There from HereThis song was the lead single from the album and peaked at number 10 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart - meaning it peaked at about 110 in US popularity. It is the first R.E.M. song to have a horn section. You can sense the Soul inspiration in it. The lyrics about “Philomath” refer to an unincorporated community just outside of Athens, Georgia. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Weird Science by Oingo Boingo (from the motion picture “Weird Science”)Two geeky high school students create the perfect woman in this sci-fi comedy partly based on Frankenstein, and largely based on the 1951 comic “Made of the Future” by Al Feldstein. STAFF PICKS:Drive by The Cars Lynch brings us a version of the Cars single from the 1985 Live Aid concert. Bassist Benjamin Orr takes on the lead vocal duties for this ballad which was written by frequent front man Ric Ocasek. The studio version appeared on their 1984 album Heartbeat City, and became one of the bands biggest hits.Take On Me by a-haBruce features the first US hit by a Norwegian band. While a-ha released the song twice before without it becoming a hit, the third release with its video combining pencil sketch animation and live performance would propel it to the number 1 slot in the U.S. Its 2 1/2 octave-spanning chorus makes it one of the hardest songs to sing.Summertime Girls by Y & T Wayne's staff pick is a hair band rocker, the first and only hit by Y&T. It went to number 55 on the Billboard Hot 100, but was played frequently on the television series “Baywatch.” The Band Y&T was originally known as "Yesterday & Today," and although they don't have many hits they have sold over 4 million albums worldwide, and were an inspiration for Lars Ulrich of Metallica to become a musician.Dancing in the Street by David Bowie and Mick Jagger Rob closes out the staff picks with a cover originally recorded by Martha and the Vandellas in 1964 (but we all agreed that the Van Halen cover is the best there is).Jagger and Bowie's version made it to number 7 on the US chart and number 1 on the UK chart. This collaboration was their contribution to the Live Aid charity movement. Noel catches up with Matthew Caws. The frontman of the alternative rock band, Nada Surf. Matthew discusses how he met Ric Ocasek of The Cars and got him to produce their debut album, High/Low. The album featured the hit "Popular." After ongoing drama with their record label during the making of their second album, The Proximity Effect, the band was dropped. Matthew talks about what he did during that time, which led to their amazing third album. Let Go. We go into some of Nada Surf's songs and discuss why at one point they were compared to Weezer.
Scott sits with The Strokes' own Albert Hammond Jr., following the recent release of the guitarist's latest solo album, Melodies on Hiatus. The California-born musician and son of “It Never Rains in Southern California” singer Albert Hammond was one of the first-ever guests on Lipps Service back in 2018. In his second appearance, he talked with Scott about The Strokes' latest tour for its album The New Abnormal, hanging out with Anthony Kiedis, and what it's like living in LA. The two also got into Hammond Jr.'s upbringing and getting into music at a young age, meeting and working with The Cars' Ric Ocasek, and the whole story of him joining The Strokes, including meeting Julian Casablancas in NY and having almost instant chemistry with him. They reflect on The Strokes' 25-plus-year-long career, working with Rick Rubin and other producers, touring, the making of his solo albums, Melodies on Hiatus, and much more. Tune into an insightful and rockin' episode with the one and only, Albert Hammond Jr.
Paulina Porizkova, who was a supermodel in the 80s, has one of those rags to riches stories which she talked with me about on “Now What?” in December 2022. That conversation has just been honored with a Clarion award for Best Podcast given by the Association of Women in Communications. Life has not always been star turns for Paulina who was born in Eastern Europe. She began modeling in Paris at the age of 15. When she was 19, she met her future husband Ric Ocasek, lead singer of the Cars. We talk about Paulina's memoir Unfiltered: The Good, the Bad and the Beautiful and what it takes to reinvent yourself when you're in your 50s. “Now What?” is produced with the help of Steve Zimmer, Lucy Little and Jackie Schwartz. Don't tell my guest from Episode No. 29 (as he is a hater through and through), but -- but -- it's the Tony Gonzalez episode! That' right. Rollin' along towards the big podcasting c-note, here we are at Episode No. 88, and I couldn't be more stoked to say that my guest is none other than the esteemed three-peat-appearance, Sammy Sanchez. The first time Sammy joined the podcast (Episode No. 44), we ran through a few of his favorite albums; the second time around (20 episodes later), we devoured the Tom Waits library.I asked Sammy back for a third time, and the catalog we landed on was none other than that of Mr. Beckenstein McBeck-McHugh. Or, as some folks refer to him: Beck. And what a treat it was!Neither of us liked some things. Both of us liked a considerable amount. And we differed a bit on favorites and deplorables.Ric Ocasek voice "If you're curious..." here're those albums:Golden Feelings (1994)Stereopathic Soulmanure (1994)Mellow Gold (1994)One Foot in the Grave (1994)Odelay (1996)Mutations (1998)Midnite Vultures (1999)Sea Change (2002)Guero (2005)The Information (2006)Modern Guilt (2008)Morning Phase (2014)Colors (2017)Hyperspace (2019)Aside from Beck's studio work, we talked music-listening habits, YouTubers, social-media platforms, and we of course took a healthy King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard detour. It was great fun to chat, and a good visit as always with Mr. Sanchez.copyright disclaimer: The audio samples in this episode are not mine. This week, my guest curator is Joe Milliken, author of “Let's Go! Benjamin Orr & The Cars” and we are crafting a mixtape filled with our favorite songs from (you guessed it!) The Cars! We also talk about some of the subject matter from Joe's book, Benjamin Orr & Ric Ocasek's pre-Cars band Milkwood; The New Cars, a 2007 version of the band featuring Elliot Easton, Greg Hawkes from The Cars, and Todd Rundgren on vocals. It's no secret that The Cars' self-titled album is my favorite album of all time, so this was an extremely difficult episode for me, as I had to make sure to spread the love amongst all of their other (equally amazing) albums! Weezer's Rivers Cuomo sits down with Shifty to talk Yngwie, Phish, and the outro solo to "Only in Dreams" off the “Blue” album. Head to http://volume.com/shifty to watch the full episodes! "I don't use effects," Rivers Cuomo states, matter-of-factly, to Chris Shiflett on this second episode of Shred With Shifty. That might come as a bit of a shock to all the Weezer fans out there who went and bought a Big Muff in an effort to imitate the alt-rock guitarist's sound. For his tones on the band's famous debut album, he went straight into his amp, and the only effect heard on that record, he says, was a bit of delay on the swells in "Only in Dreams." The outro solo to "Only in Dreams," the final song on the album, is the subject of this ep. And after the guitarists spend a few minutes discussing Cuomo's inspirations, influences, and the production of both that album and the band's sleeper success, Pinkerton, Cuomo walks Shifty through the solo lick by lick. There's the sequence of octaves high up on the neck, colored by an unexpectedly placed major 7th chord ... and Cuomo's vibrato, which reminds Chris of Brian May. What shapes a guitarist's vibrato? “Must have something to do with your nerves between your brain and your fingers,” Cuomo says. Before the recording of the album at Electric Lady Studios in NYC, Weezer's label insisted they work with a producer, which Cuomo rejected at first. Then he heard the Cars' "Just What I Needed" in the supermarket one day, and sought out the band's guitarist, Ric Ocasek. Ocasek was the one to push Cuomo to record an outro solo over the previously stripped-down, rhythm-section-based final three minutes of "Only in Dreams." After weeks of Ocasek's encouragement, Cuomo found himself alone in the studio one weekend and improvised his way through the solo. "This might be hard to believe, but when we started out, we were much more like a hippie band," Cuomo explains, describing his past devotion to Trey Anastasio. As it turns out, part of the "Only in Dreams" solo came out of Weezer's jamming portions of the song during their live shows. Click below to subscribe to the podcast! What can you say about Bebe? She first came to notice as the girlfriend of Todd Rundgren. She had a daughter, Liv, with Steven Tyler. Listen and you'll hear stories about not only those two, but Ric Ocasek, Elvis Costello, Mick Jagger, Albert Grossman, Bob Dylan, Jack Nicholson... Bebe is anything but arm candy. She is vocal and full of life and the boys loved, and still love, to hang with her. And she's still making music as an artist herself! “Never Say Never” Formed by classmates at the Art Institute in San Francisco at the sunset of the 70s, Romeo Void were one of the most dynamic, inventive and singular outfits around. Fronted by singer Debora Iyall, the classic Romeo Void lineup was Iyall on vocals, Peter Woods on guitar, bassist Frank Zincavage, saxophonist Benjamin Bossi and drummer Aaron Smith. They toured nationally, had fans that ranged from Ric Ocasek of the Cars to Ann Wilson of Heart and they signed to a major label. Things were happening. The band put out three perfect and critically acclaimed albums—It's a Condition, Benefactor and Instincts--before calling it a day in 1984. A captivating singer, Iyall had the street mart snarl of Jim Carroll and the poetic finesse of Patti Smith and she inhabited each number with strength, vulnerably and wisdom. The songs were frank and honest and their post-punk purity and new wave muscle still sounds as vital today as it did back then. And if you want to check to see if I'm right—the band has just put out LIVE FROM MABUHAY GARDENS: NOVEMBER 14, 1980, THE BAND'S FIRST OFFICIAL LIVE ALBUM. This is a searing eleven song set that's dynamic, urgent and rippling with power. www.romeovoid.bandcamp.com www.bombshellradio.com www.embersarts.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.alexgreenonline.com Stereo Embers: Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

Our guest today, super model and author Paulina Porizkova is one of the most visible women in the world, yet the last two years she has garnered a huge Instagram following sharing how invisible she feels as a middle aged woman. Something so many women relate to in youth obsessed America. Decades long ageism against women in advertisement and films has given us all a warped view of what we should perceive as beautiful, how middle aged women should act and what a mature woman really looks like. By Paulina bravely sharing her own struggles embracing aging and how society views middle aged women, she has become an inspirational trailblazer helping to reset the narrative. In her new book No Filter, Paulina writes about her marriage to rockstar Ric Ocasek, the heartache after his sudden passing, her thoughts and struggles. Luckily for us shares all the wisdom she learned on the journey. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thenewfeminist/support

Sometime around 2016, I got the sense that we were entering into a new era of rock history: a period when the musicians we loved and admired began to die... Listen, there had been many deaths before then, but they seemed reasonably few and far between...but 2016 seems to have been the year—for me, anyone—when I realized that many of our most beloved musicians were getting older and starting to die off... That one year alone we lost David Bowie, Glen Frey of The Eagles, Prince, Leonard Cohen, and George Michael....we lost both Keith Emerson and Greg Lake of the prog band Emerson, Lake, and Palmer...Paul Kantner of Jefferson Starship...Maurice white of Earth, Wind, and Fire...Beatles producer George Martin...and that's only a partial list... In 2017, it was Gord Downie, Tom Petty, Gregg Allman, Chris Cornell, ac/dc's Malcolm Young, Walter Becker of Steely Dan, and Chuck Berry, among others.... The following year, we lost Dolores O'Riordan of The Cranberries, Mark E. Smith of the fall, Avicii, Aretha Franklin, and Pete Shelley of The Buzzcocks. Then in 2019, Keith Flint of The Prodigy, Mark Hollis of Talk Talk, Ranking Roger of The English Beat and General Public, Ric Ocasek of The Cars, drumming legend Ginger Baker...I could go on, but you get the idea... The one thing that binds all humans on this planet together is that some day, we're all gonna shuffle off into the great beyond... No one is getting any younger...and over the next decade, we're going to lose some of the personalities who have always been with there for us over the last 30, 40, 50, or even 60 years... With that grim reality in mind, I think the time has come for an annual look back for those whom we've lost in the last 12 months as a way to recognize their contributions to the world of music...this is 2022 in memoriam... It's easy to assume that the life of Paulina Porizkova has always been an easy one. Most people first knew her as an internationally famous model, posing on the covers of fashion magazines and Sports Illustrated swimsuit issues. She married a rock star, Ric Ocasek of The Cars, whom she met while filming a music video for the band. Seems like the sweetest life possible, right? Well, not so fast.Paulina tells stories in this interview that show another story. She was orphaned in Czechoslovakia at age three when her parents fled to Sweden, left with her grandmother, then torn away from her grandmother at age nine to be reunited with her parents in Sweden just as their marriage was collapsing. She talks about being a teenage model in Paris, not knowing that what was happening was sexual harassment or assault. And she tells the story of her marriage to and divorce from the late Ric Ocasek, who left her out of his will. Not so glamorous, really.Get your copy of Paulina Porizkova's memoir No Filter: The Good, The Bad, and The Beautiful wherever books are sold.
