Like eating alone in a restaurant. Eating alone is no big deal in Manhattan, where I was coming from, and it's also common in Japan, Korea, and Hong Kong, where I had briefly lived. But not in Denmark.  When I arrived in Denmark 25 years ago, I already had a job, as a content creator for a small tech company. What I didn't have was any friends, or any more than a superficial knowledge of Danish language or culture. My new colleagues were very pleasant, but like most Danes over 25, they had already built their social networks and weren't really looking for someone to hang out with after work. So I spent most of my free time alone, living temporarily at a small hotel by Peblinge Sø, where I chatted aimlessly with the receptionist (who believed I was in love with him, I later found out). Then I went out to eat by myself at a local restaurant. Changpeng Zhao (CZ), the 49-year-old billionaire founder of Binance, has written a memoir. It arrives with the unmistakable timing of a man determined to tell the world his version of his meteoric crypto rise and fall, and foreshadow his comeback. The book, Freedom of Money: A Memoir of Protecting Users, Resilience, and the Founding of Binance, runs 364 pages, self-published in English and Chinese, and is available on Amazon Kindle for $9.99, where it's already ranked #4 among all Kindle books. The book traces Zhao's path from rural China to Canada, then through jobs in Tokyo, New York and Shanghai, and finally to building Binance, the crypto exchange that grew with extraordinary speed into the largest in the world. Zhao also recounts Binance's long battle with U.S. regulators, the company's record $4.3 billion settlement over anti-money-laundering and other charges, his four-month prison sentence in California, where he says he began writing the book, and his recent pardon by President Trump. He says the memoir is for readers who know him only from headlines, for those who have followed him for years, and for anyone curious how one founder could help shape an industry "and pay for it." Like most memoirs, this one is an exercise in selection and emphasis. The glowing and inspiring portrait Zhao assembles is of a man philosophically untouched by his success. Forbes estimates his fortune at roughly $110 billion, placing him ahead of Bill Gates. But wealth, he insists, was never the point. "I don't care about money," he writes. "I don't care about power. I don't care about fame. I don't even care about legacy." As evidence of his selflessness, Zhao cites charitable efforts such as Giggle Academy, his nonprofit education platform, and includes a foreword from Yi He, Binance's cofounder and the mother of his three children. She says even after Binance became a global juggernaut, Zhao still wore clothes ordered from Amazon, biked to meetings and drove an old Toyota minivan. Yet the book is equally intent on establishing Zhao firmly within the world's power circles. He writes of traveling the world and being received by political leaders and royalty, from Saudi Arabia's de facto leader, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, to the king of Bhutan, who contributed praise for the book alongside Ray Dalio and Larry Fink.  The anecdotes that follow serve the same function. Binance invested $500 million in X in 2022 — "a finger in the air number," as Zhao puts it — after little financial analysis and a brief conversation with Elon Musk. Thanks to its corporate reshuffling, Zhao adds, Binance wound up with a small stake in SpaceX, which will soon IPO with an astronomical valuation as high as $2 trillion. When Bahrain's central bank governor complained that ChatGPT was blocked in his country, Zhao writes that he reached out to Sam Altman and had the matter resolved the following day. Forbes appears numerous times in his memoir—sometimes as a marker of validation, sometimes as a source of grievance. Zhao recalls a 2017 Hong Kong photo shoot that put him on the cover, Binance hoodie and all, prompting him to turn to a friend and ask, "Does this mean I'm rich?" He writes that he considered a $200 million investment in Forbes in 2022, a deal that never materialized. And then there is the 2020 "Tai Chi" article, Forbes' report on an alleged scheme by Binance to evade U.S. regulators. Zhao casts it as part of the machinery closing in on him, suggesting prosecutors may have tipped off the reporter and later used the piece to help open an investigation. Binance sued Forbes for defamation over the article, but then dropped its lawsuit three months later. The book is at its most interesting when details slip in sideways. The Entrepreneur's Anxiety Problem: Why Money Won't Fix Your Broken Heart with Justin Breen   Why Money Won't Fix Your Broken Heart     Justin Breen has built successful companies, achieved financial success, and reached the pinnacle of what society tells us to chase. Then he walked away from it all. Why? Because he realized money won't fix a broken heart, and scaling your business without healing first might actually be making things worse.   In this conversation, Justin challenges everything we've been taught about success, leadership, and what actually matters for business owners and entrepreneurs.    Key Learning Insights  The Word "Business" Literally Means Anxiety The etymology of common business words reveals uncomfortable truths. "Business" comes from the Latin "bisignus" meaning anxiety. When you scale your business, you're scaling your anxiety. Understanding this fundamental construct can shift how you approach growth.  Money Beyond Basic Needs Doesn't Increase Happiness Once your basics are covered (food, shelter, safety), additional income doesn't change your happiness or fulfillment. Justin has experienced years of significant income and realized it meant nothing to his actual well-being. This liberates entrepreneurs to stop chasing money as the answer to internal problems.  Parents Talk AT Their Children Instead of WITH Them The breakdown in family communication mirrors the breakdown in business leadership. When parents (and leaders) don't listen with presence and eye contact, children disconnect from their feelings and learn to hide their authentic selves. Love for children is spelled T-I-M-E: presence and connection.  Your Heart Is More Powerful Than Your Brain Entrepreneurs are conditioned to live in their heads, overthinking everything. But the heart knows what the brain cannot access. True innovation and leadership come from feeling leading with thinking supporting, not the reverse. When you lead from your heart instead of your anxiety, everything changes.  Breaking Free From Social Conditioning Is Lonely But Necessary "For a select few, there is a determination to seek liberation from social hypnosis." Once you see that the world is scaling anxiety and things that don't make people happy, you can't unsee it. This awareness is isolating, but it's also the only path to genuine change and higher consciousness.    Why This Conversation Matters  This conversation matters because most business owners are building companies while their hearts are broken. They're scaling anxiety instead of scaling purpose. They're passing their unhealed trauma to their teams, their families, and the next generation. Justin's willingness to talk openly about his journey through the dark night of the soul, his divorce, the dissolution of companies, and his commitment to healing provides permission for other leaders to ask the hard question: "What am I actually building, and who am I becoming in the process?" Without this conversation, business owners continue the cycle of external achievement masking internal emptiness.    Money And Fulfillment Insights  Money is energy, not the answer. Justin has made significant money and lived a successful lifestyle. His conclusion after years of pursuit: material gains don't solve internal problems. The irony is that many entrepreneurs chase money specifically to heal something inside themselves or prove their worth. But you can't buy your way out of a broken heart.
