Visconti has been seen in this season as the director of the searing, accusatory film of the interdependence of the industrial class with the Nazis in Germany, The Damned. But where did this European industrial class arise, when Europe was still saddled with an immense set of royalty that began with kings and queens and spread its fingers into every aspect of the lives in their respective nations or nation-states until almost 1920? How was the transfer of power and wealth from the royals to a burgeoning middle- and then upper-class of technocrats, industrialists and traders brought about? How did this unweighting of the royals and shift in power to common but now wealthy families buckle civil society under the strain? In the 1963 film, The Leopard, Visconti examines the shift in the sand in the quiet, almost dispassionate gaze of a Sicilian nobleman, who sees his royal station being slowly eroded by the forces of politics, but also by the forces of economics, as wealth passes from hands supposedly blessed by a lineage from God into the more clever, adept hands of a new line. Let's talk about royalty—but not the kind you read about in tabloids. I'm talking about the kind that reigns in righteousness and power for eternity. God never wanted His people to be ruled by flawed human kings. But they begged: “Give us a king like the other nations!” And God said, “You're rejecting me as your King...but fine—don't say I didn't warn you.”Enter Saul—tall, impressive, charismatic… and tragically flawed. Disobedient. Prideful. A poster child for royalty without righteousness. He started strong, but ended his life on his own sword. Why? Because disobedience always destroys destiny. That's a word for some of you men—you can't lead well if you don't submit well. Then came David, the man after God's own heart. He was better. But he still fell. Adultery. Murder. A broken home. His life is a reminder that God uses flawed people—not because they're perfect, but because they trust Him. If you've messed up, there's still redemption in Jesus.

We discuss Visconti's final film, currently available to see through the BFI streaming service, in conjunction with the Visconti season recently held at the Southbank, and in a lush and lovely print. Richard had to convince me to podcast on this and I'm glad we did. We both think it a great film, without being anywhere near Visconti's greatest, a measure of the director's extraordinary achievements. Here we discuss it in relation to D'Annunzzio's original novel (The Intruder is the literal translation of the novel's Italian title); the lushness of décor and costuming, which sometimes seem a John Singer Sargent painting come to life; how the mise-en-scène vividly and complexly conveys character feeling, often without dialogue, and with such skill it can make a viewer swoony with admiration; we talk of how Alain Delon and Romy Schneider were originally cast and admire the performances of Giancarlo Giannini, Jennifer O'Neill, Laura Antonelli and Rina Morelli. It was also lovely to (barely) recognise Massimo Girotti, so beautiful in OSSESSIONE, as one of Giannini's rivals for Jennifer O'Neill's favours. We discuss the auction scene, and the fencing scene between husband lover in some detail; how the film reminds us of the 19th century novel in its narrative sweep, melodramatic accents and its dramatization of complex ideas (faith vs science, moral actions in a world without God, marriage vs free love, equality between the sexes, etc.). A world of feeling and desire, fuelled by melodrama; a beautiful film slightly marred by its ending. We discuss all of this and more here:

Does God Promise You Wealth? The Truth About the Prosperity GospelIs the "prosperity gospel" really biblical? A lot of people are talking about it, but what does God's Word actually say? Does God promise health, wealth, and success to every believer? Can we really just “name it and claim it,” like some preach? In the final week of our Charismania series, Pastor Ryan Visconti breaks down the scriptures often used to support the prosperity gospel—and reveals the real truth behind these teachings. Don't miss this powerful message that will challenge what you've heard and help you stand on solid biblical truth!
So many Christians today are obsessed with demon possession, deliverance ministry, and the idea that evil spirits are controlling their daily lives. But is that actually true? What does the Bible really say about demons and their influence? Can a Christian even be possessed by a demon? We're tackling these questions head-on in this week's message as part of our Charismania series. You don't want to miss it!
We didn't manage to get to much of the recent Luchino Visconti retrospective at BFI South Bank but we somehow wanted to mark the moment, and how better than a discussion of BELLISSIMA (1951), particularly through the great Eureka/ Masters of Cinema blu-ray. We discuss its themes of obsession, mother love, fantasy, cinema, the effects of media on private and collective aspirations; how it's a film that announces its fluency from the opening shots; its relation to neo-realism through on-location shooting and the use of non-professional actors; Anna Magnani's tour de force performance, drawing particular attention to the scene where she gets the neighbours involved in the beating by her husband; we note how it's an unusual film for Visconti in that it's central role is a woman's role, a vehicle for Magnani; we discuss the elements of camp, something not usually associated with Visconti; a very entertaining film of great depth; a critique of cinema by one of its greatest exponents; a film one can't imagine bettered; a film worth seeing

On this episode, we're staying in the late sixties as we watch Luchino Visconti's The Damned (1969). Following our exploration rising authoritarianism in Costa-Gavras' Z (1969) and reactionary Brazilian politics in Glauber Rocha's Entranced Earth (1967), we're heading right into the Nazi den that is the von Essenbeck family in late 1930's Germany. A scathing critique of the German industrial elite's seduction by (and complicity in) the rise of Nazism, Visconti shows how a wealthy family's greed and moral corruption lead them to embrace fascism in order to maintain their social and economic status. Watching the family's willful, strategic cruelty, we see how the wealthy can easily transition from aristocratic privilege to supporting authoritarian rule. It's quite an illustration of how capitalism and fascism intertwine. If it's been a while since you've seen it, The Damned will resonate deeply with a revisit. On a lighter note, by watching some Visconti, Aaron finally understands how Isaac feels about Godard. Follow us at: Patreon / Instagram / Letterboxd / Facebook

If you take a moment to search the internet, you'll quickly discover a vast and often conflicting range of opinions on the concept of generational curses. Some believe they are a powerful spiritual reality, while others dismiss them as mere superstition. But what does the Bible actually say about them? Are they real, and if so, are we destined to suffer because of the mistakes of those who came before us? Is there any hope for breaking free? In this week's sermon, Pastor Ryan dives deep into these difficult questions, guiding us through Scripture to uncover the truth and the hope found in God's Word. Don't miss this opportunity to gain clarity and find freedom from fear!

Good evening, Mr. and Mrs. America and all ships at sea, and welcome to Episode 57 of Vintage Sand, our first of 2025. In this episode and the next one we return, for the penultimate time, to the source of some of our most popular episodes: Danny Peary's hard-to-find 1993 classic "Alternative Oscars". In the past, we have used Peary's model to approach every full decade in which the Academy has handed out Oscars except two: the 2010's, and the topic for this two-part episode, Alternate Oscars: The 1940's Edition. It's interesting that the 40's are considered to be the peak of Hollywood's Golden Age, yet many films that were beloved and honored back then have not well withstood the passage of time. The early part of the decade's most important development was the rise of the writer/director in Hollywood. Preston Sturges was the first, with his incredible run of films from 1940-1945, and he was followed quickly by the Billy Wilder/Charles Brackett team and, of course, that clever young fellow from the Mercury Theater. The 40's also marked the arrival of Hitchcock to these shores, and the rise to prominence of new directorial voices like Huston, Preminger, Zinnemann and Nicholas Ray. There were also many high points in the decade for well-established directors like Ford, Capra, Hawks, Lubitsch and Wyler. We have the incredible run of films between 1942 and 1946 made by Val Lewton's brilliant B-movie unit at RKO, and, of course, the birth of film noir, overseen predominantly by expats like Wilder, Lang, Preminger, Ulmer, Lewis and Siodmak. The latter half of the decade, which we will cover in Episode 58 in February, saw two major developments. The end of the war saw the return to strength of many European film industries as well as studio filmmaking in Japan. In France, in the wake of 1945's miraculous "Les Enfants du Paradis", directors as different as Cocteau, Clouzot and Bresson began or restarted their careers. This explosion of creativity was matched in the UK, with the arrival of Lean, Reed, and especially with the flowering of the Powell-Pressburger Archers team. Clearly, though, the most important such event was the rise of what today is called Italian Neo-Realism, as directors like Rossellini, De Sica, and to a lesser extent Visconti, created a brand new way to tell stories on film that is still influencing directors today. The second big change of the late 40's was really two changes in one: the landmark Paramount court case in 1948 that ended the vertical monopoly the studios had long held as owners of theater chains as well, and the mass arrival of television. Between 1948 and 1952, Hollywood lost nearly half of its audience, bringing down the curtain on that so-called “Golden Age” of Hollywood. In terms of the Oscars, the Academy made solid choices for Best Picture--they certainly picked better films than they did in the 1930's! These included enduring works like "The Best Years of Our Lives", "All the King's Men" and especially, "Casablanca". Who could argue with that? (Hint: us.) But there were plenty of head scratchers as well. Prestige choices like "How Green Was My Valley", "Mrs. Miniver" and Olivier's "Hamlet" look a little creaky these days. Hell, we might argue that "Rebecca" was not even Hitchcock's best film of 1940! And the less said about "Going My Way" and "Gentlemen's Agreement", the better. So kick back, round up the usual suspects, and help us make this podcast more important than the gas in that light…
We've all been hurt by others—friends, family, coworkers, neighbors. The closer the relationship, the deeper the pain can feel. When those we care about let us down or wound us, it's tempting to hold onto that hurt, replaying the offense in our minds and carrying it with us for years. But holding onto unforgiveness only keeps us stuck in the pain. God doesn't just call us to forgive; He equips us to forgive, just as He has forgiven us. In this message, we're going to dive into not only why forgiveness matters but also the practical steps you can take to truly forgive, find freedom, and heal. It's not easy, but it's possible—and it's what God wants for you.
We all need forgiveness because we're all guilty of sin. In this message, we'll dive into why we feel the weight of guilt and how God, in His love and justice, made a way for us to be free through Jesus. If you've ever struggled with guilt or wondered if you can truly be forgiven, this will help you see the incredible peace and freedom that comes when we accept God's grace.
The Nativity story reminds us that God's plan includes everyone, from the humble shepherds to the wise men. Each character in this scene teaches us something profound about God's heart for all people—whether we feel overlooked or accomplished, rich or poor, young or seasoned. It's a powerful reminder that Jesus invites us all into His Kingdom, not based on what we have, but on our willingness to love Him and share His story.
God's people are uncurseable because of His unchanging faithfulness and blessing. As we see in Numbers 22–24, the message reminds us that no matter how others might try to harm or curse those who belong to God, His promises stand firm. Just as Israel could not be cursed, we, too, are protected and blessed by the Lord's covenant. When life feels overwhelming, or we doubt His goodness, we can trust that God is working all things for our good and His glory.
On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got two guys with more than a hundred years of music-making experience between them and the endless stories to match: Tucker Zimmerman and Tony Visconti. You'll be forgiven if you don't recognize Tucker Zimmerman's name: The songwriter existed on the fringes of the folk scene in the late 1960s but in spite of acclaim from fellow musicians—including David Bowie, as you'll hear—he never broke out. That may be because Zimmerman left America for Belgium, where he's continued to quietly create music and write for the past 40 years. But you can only keep a secret like Zimmerman for so long, and Big Thief's Adrianne Lenker happened to hear one of his records a couple of year ago and was inspired enough that one thing led to another and Big Thief ended up creating an entire record with Zimmerman called Dance of Love, which came out earlier this year. It's an odd, beautiful collaboration that's well worth checking out. In fact, check out “Burial At Sea” from Dance of Love right here; it features Lenker and Zimmerman's voices together. The other half of today's conversation is a legendary musician and producer who also had a lot to do with bringing Tucker Zimmerman into the public consciousness. Tony Visconti is best known for his many, many collaborations with David Bowie, with whom he worked closely over Bowie's entire career. Visconti has also produced records for T. Rex, Morrissey, Sparks, and way more others than I have time to list here. But for purposes of this conversation, we need to note that he helped created Zimmerman's Ten Songs album back in 1968, which they get into in this chat. They've stayed in touch over the years, and you'll hear the affection in their voices. Speaking of voices, the third person who pops up briefly in this chat is Tucker's wife Marie Claire, who also appears on the cover of Dance of Love and contributes some vocals. Elsewhere in this conversation, Tucker and Tony talk about their early adventures together, include an acid trip facilitated by a guy named Dr. Sam. They chat about Bowie, of course, and Tucker gets a chance to thank Tony for helping him out over the years—and how he's glad Tony didn't agree to produce an ABBA record when he had the chance. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Tucker Zimmerman and Tony Visconti for chatting. From the early church, where believers shared everything they had, to today, the idea is clear: grace transforms how we see and handle our resources. When we truly understand God's generosity toward us, we can experience freedom and joy in giving. This perspective encourages us to reflect on our attitudes about ownership, contentment, trust, and the priority we place on giving back to God. How does grace shape our generosity, and what changes might we see if we let it guide us?

We see in Noah's story a powerful example of how faith and obedience can bring God's favor, even in uncertain times. Noah found favor with the Lord, not because of his own merit, but because he chose to trust and act when God called him. This reminds us that God's favor isn't something we earn, but something we receive as we step out in faith. Just like Noah built the ark before ever seeing a drop of rain, we're invited to put God first and trust that our faithful actions today can shape the future. As we embrace this call, we prepare ourselves and the next generation to walk in God's blessings.
We are in a pivotal time in history. God is about to take Generation Church to another level and use us for a greater purpose: to reach more people for Jesus than ever before. This is a Kairos moment for our church, and just like all Kairos moments, it will bring tremendous tension and require faith, but it will also have a generational impact. It's time for a faith move.
The last chapter of 1 Corinthians covers a lot of ground and has something for everyone. We learn the importance of handling money the right way—by planning, being generous, and staying accountable. We also learn how to be flexible with our plans and stand strong during conflicts. This message will encourage everyone to be brave and firm in their faith, reminding us that God is always with us, even with challenges.

The apostle Paul and the early Christians took incredible risks to share the gospel. They faced wild beasts, angry mobs, prison, and even torture. So, what gave them the courage to do that? They weren't afraid of death—they saw it as an upgrade. With that same mindset, we should live each day as if eternity starts tomorrow.
