POPULARITY
Hi, Profit Designers! As we at Tap the Potential gear up for a number of special, upcoming projects, we're taking this time to bring you some of our most popular episodes from the vault! We hope you enjoy it, and we'll be back with new episodes for you very soon! In this episode, you're going to get some great ideas that are really going to get your wheels turning. Dr. Sabrina talks to Tom Antion, an internet multi-millionaire who has never had a job. He has been a professional speaker and entertainer since 1988. Tom has a really outrageous hiring method that takes guts to implement. Dr. Sabrina verifies, however, that it's a good method to use, and that it will work. Tom is the founder of The Great Internet Marketing Retreat Center, the only licensed, dedicated internet marketing school in the country, with the only facility of its kind in the world. People come from all over the world to study internet marketing there, in the lap of luxury. Tom also has a new podcast, called Screw The Commute, where he teaches people how they could live pretty much two for the price of one, if they didn't have to sit in their car on the way to work, making other people rich. Profit by Design is a Tap the Potential Production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group. Show Highlights: Tom shares the one life lesson that he has carried forward. How Tom got his outrageous idea for an entertainment company, Prank Masters. Tom explains how he got back up, kept humor around him, and started all over again when things fell down for him. Tom talks about how he got into the speaking business. Tom had to learn how to become a great, professional public speaker. Tom realized that if you try to be excellent at something yourself, people will notice and they will often ask you to teach them. Tom used what his Dad had taught him about being excellent when the commercial internet came along, around 1994. For Tom, the overriding principle is to be really excellent at what you do so that other people will ask you to teach them how to do it. This is how he got to be a big internet guru. Although it's good to have long-term dreams, you have to do the step-by-step and your emphasis will change over time. Some tips for keeping up with the constantly changing internet, for the online portions of your business. Tom discusses the ins and outs of his outrageous, street-smart hiring process. Why it's best to pay young people for the job, rather than by the hour. Tom explains how to place a hiring ad his way. Tom's ads are unprofessional, yet they really work. Tom's hiring process will help you to filter the wrong people out and speak to the right people. Dr. Sabrina's book, How To Hire The Best, features interviews with real-life entrepreneurs about their hiring practices. Tom gives his thoughts, as an entrepreneur, about what he has learned about being intentional and he also explains how he designed his business and how he runs it. You can keep your costs low by learning and doing as much as possible yourself. Only delegate once you know what you're doing. How to make your hobby legitimately tax-deductible. Tom discusses what inspired him to start his podcast and he gives some of the topics that he gets into. Tom gives some great tips from the training he does on how to do a $50,000 video production for pennies on the dollar. Tom explains how you can use Shortkeys for a PC and Keyboard Maestro for a Mac to save yourself millions of keystrokes and to provide lightning-fast customer service. Let's get real here: The internet is overflowing with “get rich quick” formulas and endless motivational posts. Those temporary bursts of inspiration can be powerful, but to achieve long-term success, you need more than one day of feeling good. On this one year anniversary of the podcast, Tom shares the most meaningful insights on success that he's learned over this year. He reminds us how to achieve REAL progress in your business, the importance of accountability over the long haul, and the readily available tools that will keep you feeling supported and free to pursue your dreams, no matter the time frame. "Success is not an event. It's the compounding of all the little things you do every day." - Tom Gaddis In This Episode: No one gets fit from working out for six hours…once. Once Tom learned THIS fundamental truth about building anything, he began to see REAL progress in his business AND life. Is motivation enough to make progress in life? Nope. For Tom and most other people, it takes setting THESE consistently so that you never stagnate and lose steam. Ever felt like a single decision would decide your fate forever? So has Tom, but realizing WHY a single decision doesn't mean the end empowered Tom to push through fear and take those all-important first steps to pursue his passions. Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither was it built alone. Investing time and money into THIS will, without fail, help your long term success. Today, I am so excited to welcome Tom Wheelwright! Tom is known as a tax and wealth expert, he is a CPA, and the CEO of WealthAbility®. He is the Best-Selling Author of Tax-Free Wealth (part of the Rich Dad Advisors Series). Tom is a speaker, entrepreneur, and host of two popular podcasts: The WealthAbility™ Show and The WealthAbility® for CPAs Show. He is a contributor to Entrepreneur magazine, and his work has been seen in Forbes, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, FOX and Friends, and many other media outlets. We begin this episode, as we often do, with Tom’s background. Tom began his career doing bookkeeping for his father’s company. After getting his master's of Professional Accounting degree from the University of Texas, he managed and led the professional training for thousands of CPAs at Ernst & Young’s National Tax Department in Washington, D.C. He was an in-house tax advisor for Pinnacle West Capital Corporation, at the time a Fortune 1000 company and he also served as an adjunct professor in the Masters of Tax program at Arizona State University for 14 years, where he created the course for teaching multi-state tax planning techniques. Tom now teaches the Rich Dad Education Advanced Tax and Asset Protection class and he is also currently building a network of CPA firms around the world in order to serve more people. We then talk about the importance of planning and thinking ahead when it comes to taxes. Having these discussions with your CPA early on in the tax year helps you to prepare properly. As a successful business owner, you need to know your numbers every single day. And when you know where you stand, it is much easier to plan out your taxes. We briefly touch on the differences between bookkeepers and CPAs. According to Tom, your bookkeeper is there to provide accurate records that help you make right decisions. Your CPA is there to analyze those records. The role of your bookkeeper is to keep you accountable, and it is that accountability that creates profitability. Tom then talks about buying and selling CPA firms, as well as creating them from scratch. He walks us through the process of turning around a CPA firm after the purchase. For Tom, it was all about building appropriate systems. For example, very few CPAs have a system for meeting with clients: when, how often, what is the goal, etc. Tom believes that systems are what creates value in a business, that they are the primary asset of the business. We then move on to talking about Tom's partnership with Robert Kiyosaki. The two met when Tom bought a CPA firm that had Robert as one of the clients. This just proves that you never know where your contacts can lead you. Tom goes into detail explaining how all the pieces came together at the right time and led to him becoming Robert’s tax advisor. We then discuss the current political situation. We talk about how political changes affect us and what should we know from a small-business standpoint. Tom’s estimate is that the taxes will probably go up in the next four years. The incentives will probably shift to clean, renewable energy. From a real-estate point of view, if you have a real estate with solar production or hydroelectric production, that will be a great source of cash-flow. These changes will require an adjustment to how we think when it comes to real estate. Lastly, we dive into the stimulus bill. Tom takes us through some of the most important parts of the bill as far as taxes are concerned: restaurant business meals (both takeout and dine-in) are 100% deductible for the next two years, extending the universal charitable deduction through 2021, and qualifying for PPP loans. Tom then goes on to explain PPP loans even further in regards to the new act. You do not want to miss this amazing and advice-packed episode of the Just Start Real Estate Podcast with the legendary tax expert, Tom Wheelwright! Notable Quotes: “One of the mistakes that new entrepreneurs, new investors get into is that they are catching up on their taxes, instead of staying ahead.” Tom Wheelwright “Good tax records and good tax practices are also good business practices.” Tom Wheelwright “If you are running a good, tight business and you know your numbers, tax season won’t be so stressful because you will have the information available.” Mike Simmons “Your bookkeeper is there to create accuracy, accurate records that you can make good decisions from and your CPA should be there to analyze those records.” Tom Wheelwright “If you don't have the documentation, you don’t get to deduct that expense.” Tom Wheelwright “What a system does is actually create value. Because if you don’t have a system, really all you are doing is constantly selling. If you constantly have to sell, you don’t really have a business, you have a job as a salesman. ” Tom Wheelwright “You can sell a business, but a business has to have assets and primary assets are going to be the systems of the business” Tom Wheelwright “A sellable business is also a well-run business.” Mike Simmons “Once you find the formula that you can repeat over and over again, all of a sudden business is easy. When you are making a new decision every day, that makes business hard.” Tom Wheelwright “I happen to believe that business produces income; workers are necessary but they are not the reason that business survives. The business survives because of the assets in the business.” Tom Wheelwright “Never turn down free money.” Tom Wheelwright “A tax strategy should be a long-term tax strategy.” Tom Wheelwright Links: Tom’s Website Tom on Facebook Tom on LinkedIn WealthAbility Website WealthAbility on Facebook WealthAbility on Twitter WealthAbility on Instagram WealthAbility on LinkedIn Mike’s FREE Coaching 7 Figure Flipping Return on Investments Just Start Real Estate JSRE on Facebook Mike on Facebook Mike on Instagram Mike on LinkedIn Mike on Twitter Level Jumping: How I Grew My Business to Over $1 Million in Profits in 12 Months
Dr. Denise McCurdy, Blockchain Governance Advisor at Grove Gate Consulting along with Tom Fuhrman, Blockchain & Cybersecurity Consultant at Vector MV, join us in this podcast to discuss the challenges of adopting blockchain from a governance and risk standpoint. Denise is a blockchain governance advisor who has written a doctoral dissertation on blockchain with a special focus on supply chain and governance. She’s also the VP of blockchain governance for a supply chain and logistics startup. Tom Fuhrman is a blockchain & cybersecurity consultant specialised in cybersecurity consulting for the last 25 years. Recently he has extended his scope into blockchain consulting, where he focuses on strategy, governance, risk management, and specifically looks at the intersections between blockchain and cybersecurity. What is blockchain? For Denise, blockchain is a database shared across a network of computers. As a record or block gets added to that database the blocks are chained together. Records on the blockchain are very difficult to change because each block has a hash which refers to the previous block. So, any change of a block requires a change of the entire chain. It is this attribute of blockchain which makes it very secure. For Tom, blockchain is a shared, continuously updated immutable database. It represents a single source of truth amongst trustless participants. As Tom is a cybersecurity expert he believes that blockchain inherently has two of the three attributes that cybersecurity requires: Integrity because of its immutably nature Availability because it is distributed Confidentiality isn’t something that blockchain has inherently but it can be added with encryption Tom also reminds us that blockchain exists in two basic design philosophies: public permissionless and private permissioned. Permissionless is most famously known via Bitcoin where anyone can participate at any level. Everything is decentralised and transparent in a trustless environment. A permissioned blockchain has a restricted access. It isn’t as decentralised and they require a certain degree of trust. What is governance and its impact on blockchain and its members? Governance is about agreeing upfront the rules and the processes and what to do when things go wrong. It’s a system of rules that helps govern an ecosystem of players in how they can interact. Whilst working on her dissertation Denise started to interview supply chain business people who were trying to deploy a blockchain solution. During her interview she kept hearing that it isn’t about the technology but instead, a real lack of clarity around how firms need to work together much more closely than they're used to doing due to the nature of blockchain. What her interviewees were expressing was the need for a governance framework, or playbook. Blockchain impacts its members because they now have to share business processes, confidential information and intellectual property. It’s synonymous to them having to expose the underbelly of their organisation in ways that they haven't had to do before. This closeness of sharing sometimes blurs the lines in their eyes of where their company ends and others begins. For many this is a cultural shift which many companies are not used to. For Denise one of the key governance challenges is understanding the amount of changes that people and firms are going to have to do. Collaborative governance as a key mechanism to removing obstacles Collaborative governance is a particular type of governance that in Denise’s point of view is quite well suited for blockchain as it addresses many of the common issues at the beginning of blockchain such as: information asymmetry, incentives, prehistory of cooperation or conflict of members. These are starting conditions that have to be addressed at the very beginning. This then flows into an agreement on how to make decisions, what is equitable,
Tom Mulliez is a father, husband, entrepreneur, and the visionary behind iTREKKERS. Tom founded the company in 2014 after realizing that bringing together vetted professional captains and guides on one platform would help guarantee everyone a better experience in the outdoors. iTREKKERS is a combination of Tom’s desires to share his love of nature and to simplify the process of booking guided outdoor activities. His mission is threefold: to get people to experience the outdoors through iTREKKERS; to help people get outdoors, period, by providing useful tips and referrals; and to educate people about the outdoors and ways to be mindful. Tom, who earned a Bachelor in Commerce from Canada’s McGill University and an MBA in marketing at Virginia Commonwealth University, was raised between his hometown of Roubaix, France, and a small town near Atlanta. His love of nature is derived from early memories of camping in the Georgia mountains with his father. For Tom, the only passion greater than a love of the outdoors is his love of family. Tom and his wife often spend time outdoors camping, at the beach, or on their boat with their three young children. We start with the rides. Larry does his for his eyes only loosening up before his 90 mile ride through the countryside. Tom has merely trundled about on his electric bicycle this week. did get new tires for his GS, and rode a few miles to scrub the tires. This leads to Kevin’s question about what does constitute for each of us, and our listeners, what constitutes a ride? For Tom, and Larry, any distance on the motorcycle is a ride. Kevin asks now what is a quality ride. Tom says a safe one…Kevin looks for a longer distance, perhaps over 50 miles, to count as a quality ride. News: We learn that “The Long Way Up” will premiere sept. 18 on Apple Plus TV, and will air the first 3 episodes immediately, and then air the rest on a weekly basis. They couldn’t stop the people from coming, but they could have cancelled the rally. Kevin is hoping for the best, Larry is anticipating the worst. Topic: With the rise in use of headsets in the helmets, do you ride in silence, with music, or other? Larry is happy with his ancient Sena smh10, enjoys silence as well as music, books, and podcasts Tom is a headset techie, and currently rocks a Cardo Black. Likes to listen to music when riding. Kevin used to listen to music all the time, but more recently for longer freeway rides. Kevin and Tom argue about headsets (jes’ joking) Paddock: Larry reviews Marquez reinjury trying to qualify for the Jerez race last weekend, and then reviews the results of the Czech MotoGP.
In this episode, Katie is joined by Tom Lansdowne. Tom currently works for Butternut Box and he talks about his journey to get to where he is today. As an economics student, he decided not to go for the career options that were set out for him and instead he created founded a start-up with his co-founders. For Tom this meant he had to move back in with his parents after university and spend his weekends working another job, putting most of what he was earning back into his business. Katie and Tom chat about what it is like moving back in with your parents after university and Tom gives some tips on personal finances. Finally, Tom talks about how his start-up ended and how he sees it as success in helping in build his career. This episode continues our discussion of college and young adult years. This second episode discusses our unique experiences that occurred during our summers while in college. For Eden, the summers were all about internships. For Tom, it was military preparation. In both cases, summer experiences were about preparing for the first job after college. Having the most recent experience, Eden also shares information about internships in general including difficulties in finding an internship, internships as a conduit to a full time job and the value of an unpaid internship. Tom shares experiences gained while learning how to be an Army Paratrooper, a Drill Cadet and a tank platoon leader in Germany. By comparing and contrasting our experiences we uncover a very surprising observation about our college summer experiences and how our careers panned out after leaving college. As with all of our episodes, this episode is standalone, which means that you don’t have to listen to any other episode to enjoy this one. We hope you find this short conversation interesting. On Episode 107, I am joined by Kentucky singer-songwriter Brit Taylor. Taylor released the wistful, melancholy single "Waking Up Ain't Easy" in the early summer. With its traditional country roots with weeping pedal steel and Taylor's own restless vocals and lyrics, she captures a desolate and endless lonesomeness of post-breakup life. During this interview, we talk about being an early morning person, how impacts her songwriting, country music for adults, growing up in Kentucky (and the wealth of talented songwriters from the state), Zoom songwriting, and what she has planned for the rest of 2020. In addition, Taylor is releasing another stellar song, "Wagon," from her forthcoming debut at the end of the week--Friday, July 31.This episode is sponsored by The Blue Light Live and Tom's Daiquiri in Lubbock, Texas. On Episode 106, I am joined by singer-songwriter Garrett T. Capps. Capps, who released the (inter)stellar Space Country record All Right, All Night, embraces the sonic tones and textures of yesterday and tomorrow throughout his rich and diverse catalog. At times, he turns back the pages of Tex-Mex, honky-tonk, and the sweltering heat of South Texas. Other times, he ventures off into the vast unknown and lays down a dreamy foundation with the cosmic chill and awe of deep space adventures. During this conversation, we talk about those various directions in his songwriting and sound, growing up in San Antonio, touring Europe, recording albums with the likes of Adam Odor and Jerry David DeCicca, and hanging out with Texas legend Augie Meyers. On Episode 105, I'm joined by singer-songwriter Jenny Tolman. Tolman released her debut full-length album, the excellent and charming There Goes The Neighborhood just about a year ago. During this interview, we discuss the creation of Jennyville--the fictional picturesque town that's the focal point of Neighborhood--how and why she drifted towards this concept, growing up in Nashville, the Nashville songwriting machine and industry as a whole, and how she's stayed focused, grounded, and sane during the 2020 pandemic. Tom Bilyeu is the co-founder and President of Quest Nutrition, the second fastest growing privately owned company in the United States (currently valued at over $1 billion). He is also the founder of Impact Theory, a show dedicated to helping you achieve your limitless potential. Favorite Success Quote “Do and believe that which moves you towards your goals” Never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never—in nothing, great or small, large or petty—never give in except to convictions of honor and good sense. Key Points 1. Find That Thing That Makes You Feel Alive We live in an age of unprecedented freedom. Never before in the history of the human race have there been so many options available to so many members of the general populace. In the 21st century, our options and opportunities, like our potential, are nearly limitless. Traveling across the globe is easier than it’s ever been, growing your brand and authority has never been so scalable, and the ability to build a wildly successful business is now open to anybody with access to the internet. And yet… Despite the tremendous number of resources and the almost limitless amount of opportunity circulating the modern economy, recent polls still indicate that nearly 70% of the American workforce is disengaged with their career! How can this be? In an era of unparalleled choices and opportunity more than two-thirds of the entire nation spends 40+ hours of their week doing something they hate! While every individual is different and each circumstance is unique, I personally believe that the primary reason for this disconnect is simple. People are scared. They are scared that pursuing their dreams will be hard, they are scared that following their passions will be too difficult, and they are scared that they will fail. But guess what? Regardless of the path you choose to pursue, there will be challenges, there will obstacles, and there will be hardships. The struggle is an inevitable part of the human condition. No matter what path you choose to pursue, you will face challenges and trials, you will fail, and you will probably want to quit more than just once. But, if you decide to pursue that thing that makes you come alive, the thing that lights a fire inside of you, the thing that you are willing to devote the rest of your life to… Nothing will stop you. 2. Tailor Your Activities to Achieve Cognitive Optimization Since Tom founded one of the fastest growing health and nutrition companies in the world, it should come as little surprise that one of his “Secrets to success” is methodically optimizing his cognitive performance. No matter what goal you are pursuing, you will need to be operating at full blast in order to effectively make decisions, execute on ideas, and move the needle forward. And the quickest way to improve your own performance is to optimize the performance of the gray matter in between your ears. But how does one actually do this? How do you totally optimize your mind without spending thousands of dollars on supplementation, smart drugs, and crazy bio-hacking equipment? The truth is surprisingly unsexy. For Tom, it all starts with sleep. He is in bed every night by 9 p.m. and only wakes up whenever he feels rested and ready to attack the day. This is crucial to ensuring optimal brain performance since the majority of memory, association, and cellular repair happens while we are asleep. After optimizing his sleep, Tom will then head to the gym every single morning, flooding his brain and body with dopamine, endorphins, and endocannabinoids and getting his mind and body into a peak state. With his workout concluded, Tom will sit in silence to spend time “Thinkitating” which is, as Tom puts it, “Applying the afterglow of meditation to solve the greatest challenges in your life.” Basically, after concluding a short meditation session using Mark Divine’s box breathing technique, he will sit back and consciously contemplate the greatest challenges he’s facing in his life allowing his mind and subconscious to search for an answer to the problem. Then, with his exercise and thinkitation done, Tom hits the books and will consciously spend an hour or more each morning filling his mind with ideas from the best and brightest individuals on the planet. Tom attributes much of his success to this “Cognitive optimization morning routine”. It’s not complicated, it doesn’t require much equipment, and it can be done from anywhere in the world. If you want a more detailed description of the Impact Theory Morning Routine, you can check out this article for more info. 3. Always Focus on Delivering More Value than Expected Imagine for a moment that you are purchasing a product and deciding between two different companies. For the sake of the argument (and since Tom is the founder of a fitness nutrition company) let’s assume that the companies in question are selling a muscle gain supplement. After years of research company A found a formula that helps their clients get results and they decided to follow the age-old advice “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it”. Company B, however, is never satisfied and they continue dumping thousands of dollars a month into sourcing higher quality ingredients, finding new ways to improve their formula, and delivering more value to the end customer. Who do you think will win? Even though Company A has a “good” product that provides real value to their customers, Company B is unwilling to settle for “good enough”. And let me tell you, one of the biggest traps that entrepreneurs fall into is the trap of “Good enough”. Because the second that you stop improving your product, service, or experience somebody else who is hungrier, more motivated, and more driven than you are will steal your customers and leave you in the dust. You must constantly improve the value that you bring to the marketplace and look for new and unique ways to expand your services to help more people. Because at the end of the day, you will be paid in direct proportion to the amount of value that you give. And if you do more than you are paid for now, you will be paid for more than you do later. 4. Email is the Greatest Thief of Productivity While it might seem a little bit superfluous to devote an entire key point of this interview to the topic of email, I want you to consider for a moment that the average American is estimated to spend a total of 3.2 hours per day just checking work related emails (this doesn’t include personal correspondence). That’s almost half of their work day devoted entirely to the largely pointless act of reaching inbox zero. During our interview, Tom admitted to having over 6,000 unopened emails sitting in his inbox and told us that he will typically look at his emails only twice a week for a few minutes. According to conventional wisdom, there’s no way that he could effectively run a successful company spending so little time devoted to email, and yet he’s the Co-founder of one of the nation’s fastest growing companies. If you want to become truly successful at the game of business, then you must learn to focus only on profit-producing activities. Email is not one of those. 5. You Will Never Eliminate Pride, So Use It While many philosophers and teachers preach the importance of eliminating pride, anyone with a basic understanding of the human condition knows that pride is an inherent part of our existence and will never be removed. So if we cannot eliminate our pride, then what are we supposed to do? The simple answer? Use it. Pride and ego can actually be a phenomenal tool if they are focused on the right things. Specifically, learning to develop immense pride around your focus on the processes, not your outcomes. What do I mean by this? Well, instead of priding yourself on how smart you are (which will likely lead to careless mistakes) develop immense pride in your commitment to your education. Instead of priding yourself on your physique, strength, or endurance (all of which can be taken away with one injury) develop immense pride in your physical work ethic and desire to improve your body. Learn to take pride in who you are instead of what you are and you will find that pride becomes an asset instead of a liability.
“When were you saved?” “3 people were saved last week.” “I got saved at summer camp.”The language of “getting saved” is common among Christians, and it relates to one of the most important concepts within Christianity: Salvation. But have we really paused to consider what we are saying when we use the buzzwords of the faith? What does it mean to “get saved”? How does one become saved? And who or what are we being saved from? For Tom and Pete, growing up in the faith, there was a clear answer; they were saved from hell, which is a place of eternal punishment that God sends sinners who don't accept Jesus. This worked for a while, but eventually, some questions emerged. Chief among them was, “So....are we saying that Jesus saves us from...God?”In this episode, Tom and Pete break down the language a bit, reflecting on how their upbringings in the church shaped what they thought it meant to “get saved”, and how their understanding has begun to shift. One might say that the longer they've followed Jesus, the more God has saved them from a bad understanding of what it means to be saved! _____Let's keep this conversation going! We'd love for you to share this episode with a friend, family member, or even an enemy. Alberta author, Tom Morin, nearly died 3 times because of his work and so sometimes, it takes a while for a message to sink in. For Tom, it was clear he needed to rethink work and now he's a workplace consultant, hoping to help others with his new book, "Your Best Work: Create the Working Life That's Right For You."
Tom takes you through his journey from being a graduate at university, to hospital psychologist, to educator and finally author. The twin ideas of Futures Consciousness and the centrality of Science Fiction emerged from that journey.Tom Lombardo is a psychologist, futurist, educator and author who belives that Futures Consciousness is innate to humans but it is a capacity that should be heightened. He has had a life long passion for Science Fiction which he sees as operating as a Futures mythology. For Tom, humans can consciously evolve themselves and our species and that we all need to face up to that responsibility.
Lamenting our stasis and the state of the national conversation, Nate Smith and Tom Pestak jumped into the virtual podcast booth to try to get back into a Cavalier mood. They started out taking bets on whether the NBA would resume this season, and then talked a little about the only NBA topic of late. ESPN's The Last Dance documentary and the Jordan era Bulls spurred a discussion of how Jordan would do in today's era, and then what a lousy teammate he was. It sparked an interesting follow-up: who is the least liked great Cleveland athlete? For Tom, it's a pivotal member of the Cavs' championship. For Nate it's probably a Cleveland Brown great. We dove deeper into ranks, breaking down ESPN's top 10 and top 40 NBA all time list as we talked about the greats. We both thought Kobe was a leetle high at 9, and that Nash was way too high at 30. That led us down a road of ranking the all-time Cavs and reviewing how our 2014 #CavsRank list holds up. We discussed the rankings and how key guys from the Cavs' championship stack up with the guys on that list. Where do you put TT, Kev, and J.R? Finally, Tom and I got into some stories of awful salesmen: Tom relayed a tale of a ridiculous door-to-door exterminator, and Nate learning to never give his number to a lending website. Consternation ensued and confrontation ensued. Stay safe everyone, and hopefully there will be more basketball in all our futures.

Tom talks about how he worked as a freelance charter pilot, made and lost a lot of money, and how he's been in gun-fights, knife-fights and even had a biker gang after him! Tom shares the one life-lesson that he has carried forward. Dr. Sabrina's book, How To Hire The Best, ifeatures interviews with real-life entrepreneurs about their hiring practices. Tom gives some great tips from the training he does on how to do a $50, 000 video production for pennies on the dollar. Tom talks about his e-book on how to automate your business. It contains all the techniques he uses to work more efficiently and be highly responsive to customers. He normally charges $27 for the book, and is giving it to our listeners. Tom explains how you can use Shortkeys.com (www.shortkeys.com) for a PC and Keyboard Maestro (www.keyboardmaestro.com) for a Mac to save yourself millions of keystrokes and to provide lightning-fast customer service. Tom and Ariana are entrepreneurs and business mentors. Tom has been a side-hustler since he was a teenager, but he started his first “real business” at 22 when he started a real estate investment company. A few years later, he started his second business, which was a brick and mortar wine and liquor store. Ariana eventually stepped in to help run the businesses. Even though she didn’t have an interest in entrepreneurship, she could see how it was a path to creating their ideal life. Due to their success as entrepreneurs, others sought Tom & Ariana out for guidance on how they too could build businesses - with the particular goal of doing so while raising a family. With each of their businesses bringing in sustainable income, it was then that Tom left his corporate consulting job so that he and Ariana could focus their attention on helping entrepreneurs. This fulfilled their own desire to build a life that both he and Ariana wanted for their family. For several years now, they have helped thousands of entrepreneurs and business leaders achieve more success through their twice a week podcast, Lifestyle Builders Podcast, and mentorship and coaching programs. In 2019 they are set to release their first book which focuses on helping entrepreneurs build the life and businesses they dream of. Tom’s Tip for Getting a Spouse on Board with a Financial Plan One of the major frustrations in a marriage and/or life-partnership is when one is not on the same page with the goals of the other. You may have a great plan for your future - but if your partner is not on board - it will be extremely difficult to make it work. Tom suggests the following to help get both spouses on the same page. Focus on What You Want Your Life to Look Like Understand that you have had the journey or epiphany and your spouse has not had the benefit of your journey or thought process. You cannot fast-track their journey. They need to have the time to have their own epiphany. Understand Why You Want What You Want and Align Your Motivation with Your Partner One of you may be logical and the other may be emotional. It is important to understand the other's motivation and come to a common ground. For Tom, he was more logical and the numbers to get to Financial Independence made his plan a no-brainer. For Ariana, there was an emotional motivator of having the life she wanted for her children. Don’t Make Big Financial Decisions Without Consulting Your Partner Making big money moves without your partner on board and in alignment is a recipe for disaster and resentment. Just don’t do it. And if you already have - do the hard work and come to a common ground solution and stick to it. TOM'S EPIPHANY The game Cash Flow 101 - Cash Flow 101 is a well-known board game. One of the principles to “win” is to get out of the rat race by your monthly cash flow exceeding your expenses. While playing this game Tom had an epiphany. He realized it was not about how much you made - but how much cash flow you could create every month. With that Tom decided he would use multiple income streams to do two things: Reduce his expenses while increasing his income. Use the extra money from multiple businesses to Pay-off debt Then transition to quitting traditional careers and work from home on the businesses they created Tom’s Big Business Mistake Tom and many new business owners make the mistake of getting excited about and focusing on the product first. Unfortunately, what can happen is the product is a flop and your business fails. What Tom advises to build a successful and sustainable business is to first focus on who your customers are. Figure out WHO you are serving. He suggests talking with them and understand exactly what they want. Once that is understood, then, and only then, build the right product to serve your ideal customer. Businesses that do this are the ones that have longevity. Don’t Quit Your Day Job One final bit of advice...Tom says to keep your day job for as long as possible. You don’t want to leave an old job too soon. Use this time to build up your savings. Also, give your new business time to work out the kinks and build a roadmap of success. Then when you have enough cushion to serve as a suitable emergency fund and your new business has gotten past some of the initial growing pains, then confidently take the leap. The Final Questions We asked Tom, what was one lesson, good or bad, he learned growing up that has carried over into his Financial Independence Journey. “Personal debt is bad! Avoid it and learn to delay gratification.” What was one financial lesson he wanted to share with his children? “Be clear on what you want...Don’t go with what society tells you...It’s OK to be unconventional.” Where to Find Tom: There you can learn more about their podcast, their mentorship and coaching programs - Lifestyle Builders, as well as find out when their book comes out!

This week’s conversation is with Tom Carroll on being a maverick, honesty, and risk.Tom is best known as one of Australia’s great surfers and sportsmen. I have known of Tom since I was a grom (stoked little kid who flat out loved surfing). With two world professional surfing championships and three wins at Pipeline (one of the heavier waves in the world) under his belt, you’d be forgiven for thinking he’s just a champion athlete.Rather Tom is a maverick -- in many ways.Reaching the professional level of any sport has its fair share of challenges, but in the modern era, there is generally some sort of path or map to follow -- like in baseball, gymnastics, or soccer -- there's a variety of developmental clubs / teams / or university systems that help cultivate and weed out those that have "it" and those that don't.Coaching and feedback along the way and physical training would be assumed,Tom emerged in an era where none of this existed and essentially had to figure it out as he went. He was part of the beginnings of the action sport and surf industry, before it was an industry. He was making the map, or at least looking for the bread crumbs that other legends before him left behind. Tom won 2 titles before he ever saw footage of himself surfing. That is just hard to conceive in the world we live in today. This conversation is with a man who fell in love with the water at age 7 and has lived it ever since.Tom has a relaxed and engaging way of sharing his experiences: as a kid falling for the wild elegance of the waves, as a pro surfer ripping and partying his way around the globe with a bunch of like minded maniacs in the days before social media, as a big wave charger hunting down unridden mountains of water, and as a man who fell into heavy drug use and almost tore it all to bits, before embracing sobriety and re-discovering his better self in the process. For Tom, rediscovering his better self, came down to honesty. Once he was able to be honest with himself, he could start working on being a better man. When we think about mastery, I think we are learning there are many paths, many triggers for what drives each of these unique people to go the distance for what they want most. What I love so much about Tom and this conversation is it’s raw authenticity -- his humility -- his vulnerability -- his ability to take risks (some to progress his skill, others on the darker side of humanness) -- and his track record of going big on the world-stage. He's earned and is still earning his insights. It’s easy to get caught up in what you should or shouldn’t be doing. The norms of society: how much money you should make, when you should get married, whether you should do this or that.Tom has carved his own path.In this conversation it feels like we get to go back to a simpler time where we get to learn about a journey of a man engaging in the purest forms of life.Tom is authentic, he’s genuine, and he has an incredible story to share.I hope you enjoy this conversation. This episode is brought to you by Athletic Greens.Receive a free 20-count travel pack of Athletic Greens (valued at $99) with any purchase!Claim here: athleticgreens.com/findingmastery

For Tom, however, it represents a prime opportunity to bust his best friend's balls over said childhood fears. So listen in as your favorite drunken dorks meet up on the eve of the film's release to discuss what they're hoping for before they watch it, and continue listening through the break as they meet back up after having watched it to hear their thoughts on the final product. Did it meet their expectations? Did it live up to their memories of the Made-For-Television cult favorite? Did Jake make it through the screening without peeing himself? All this, and more, can be found out by pressing "Play"! As Princeton freshman students, Tom has a strong sense of his good looks; Amber wants acknowledgement from her peers that she is pretty. They meet at a party, they drink, and the boundaries become blurred. The issue of consent is a central theme of Actually, (play written by Anna Ziegler, directed at the Geffen by Tyne Rafaeli) and how the issue evolves depends largely on what each character's experience has been. Does handsomeness bring privilege? Does a strong support system determine privilege? Gender dynamics, race, societal perceptions, measures of success all come into question and the conversation will have a lifetime affect not only on the characters but the audience as well. Memories play tricks and recall can change. For Tom and Amber, there is dissonance in their story but not in the concrete activity. In this podcast, Aubrey Hicks, LaVonna Lewis, Oliver Mayer, and John Sonego discuss the themes and how familial background/experiences can modify a truth.
Dr Tom Hubbard is a plant-based GP on a mission, not to change the world, but to do what is right. It is impossible for him to ignore the evidence and unread what he has read, when it comes to the health benefits of eating a plant-based diet. Claire and Andrew Davies met Tom on the Plantpower Ireland retreat, held by Rich Roll and Julie Piatt in July 2017. Like them, he'd signed up to attend the 7 day retreat and it quickly became evident that he would be a fascinating podcast guest. Tom is humble, engaging and thoroughly committed to presenting his patients with all of the options for treatment, including the benefits of eating a plant-based diet. In fact, he quotes a study that says even adding just one extra serve of fruit or vegetables per day can reduce cancer risk. His approach is one that’s about planting seeds for change rather than preaching or telling his patients what he thinks they should do. One of the best things about being able to interview people for this podcast, is hearing about the trigger that precipitated change in their lives. For Tom it was health, not his own but that of his mother, that lead him to become aware of the benefits of eating more plants. Also included in this conversation are stories of real patients and the transformations that Tom has witnessed and which have provided him with immense satisfaction and joy. The simple fact is that most members of the medical community are unaware of the profound benefits that eating a plant-based diet can have in preventing and reversing diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and some cancers. Dr Tom Hubbard gives us hope that things are changing and that as consumers of the health care system, we will soon be given all the facts and options, not just the ones that may be denying us the best health we can achieve. Episode 18 Show Notes I. Compensation, Incentive and Compliance In this episode, Roy Snell and myself discuss how incentives are integral to the compensation plans of a wide range of workers. Many experts point to their value in rewarding behavior that is in the interest of the organization and for keeping workers focused on activities that help the bottom line. At the same time, however, the incentives can pose great risks. Many corporate scandals have shown that workers and corporate leaders may give in to the temptation to cheat to make their numbers, doing whatever they can to achieve their goals and reap the rewards. As a consequence, incentive plans may turn out to be a roadmap for compliance risk. This danger argues for the compliance department having a role in reviewing incentive plans, if nothing else than to develop controls that ensure the numbers are hit properly, without violating policies, procedures, the law, and ethical norms. To better assess the role of the compliance team in reviewing incentive plans, in April 2017 the Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics and the Health Care Compliance Association fielded a survey among compliance professionals. The results indicate that, despite the risks, compliance rarely plays a role in evaluating incentive programs. For the recent SCCE/HCCA survey on this issue, click here. For additional writings by Tom see the following blog posts: Incentivizing Compliance Executives and Compliance Compensation Incentives Sales Incentives and Compliance II. Compliance and the Board of Directors On a second topic, Roy and I discuss the need that a true compliance expert sit on a company’s Board of Directors. The presence of a such a compliance professional with subject matter expertise on the Board sends a strong message about the organization’s commitment to compliance, provides a valuable resource to other Board members, and helps the Board better fulfill its oversight obligations. Almost every Board has a former Chief Financial Officer (CFO), former head of Internal Audit or persons with a similar background and often times these are also the Audit Committee members of the Board. Such a background brings a level of sophistication, training and subject matter expertise that can help all companies with their financial reporting and other finance based issues. So why is there not such compliance subject matter expertise at the Board level? Roy sees it through the prism of the compliance profession and has said, “If you ask most companies if they have compliance expertise on their Board… most would say yes. When asked who the compliance expert is they typically point to a lawyer, auditor, risk manager, or an ethicist. None of these professions are automatically compliance experts. All lawyers have different specialties.” He goes on to state that what regulators want to see is specific compliance expertise at the Board level. He noted, “the government is looking for is not generic compliance expertise. They are looking for compliance program management expertise. For Roy’s further thoughts on this issues, see his blog post, “Compliance Expertise Needed on Your Board”. For Tom’s writing on the subject see his blog post, “Compliance Expertise Needed on the Board”. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Tom Bilyeu is the co-founder and president of Quest Nutrition and the host of the weekly thought leadership talk show, Inside Quest. Tom and his business partners have been working as a team for 13 years, across multiple companies. Quest Nutrition, however, was the company that broke the mold. Previously driven by an obsessive focus on profitability and companies designed to be sold, Tom and his partners founded Quest with a different vision: building a company with a mission - a company designed to last. To do so, they asked themselves one question, “What would we love doing even if we were failing?” Enter Quest Nutrition. In just five years, Tom has helped grow the company from a modest passion project into the second fastest growing private company in America, with over 57,000% growth in its first three years alone (via Inc. 5000). For Tom the mission of Quest is deeply personal – he wants to save his mom and sister from metabolic disease. To do that he plans to transform the entire food industry by creating foods that taste as good as they are good for you. That’s what makes Quest more than just a food company, it’s a company that will never stop innovating until global nutrition has been freed from the stranglehold of junk food. Tom is a forever student of life. His obsession with mastering skills has molded him into a well-rounded leader, battle-hardened and unafraid to fire moonshots. If you enjoyed this episode, I would absolutely appreciate you sharing it with your friends, subscribing and reviewing as well, this is so crucial to the long-term growth and exposure to the Podcast and would mean the world! iTunes Android Stitcher Resist Average, Tommy www.resistaverageacademy.com
Tom Oliver chatted on hopped cider and the best of what the US and UK have to look forward to in the cider market. What he saw in US hopped ciders back in 2013 ignited his desire to try his hand at adding hops to his bittersweet cider. He worked with 3-different cider blends and Cascade hops and in turn "ramped up" the bittersweet element to give a bit more of the drying finish. The hop from the Czech Republic Kazbet was also used and provide a very different profile and balance to the Cascade. I had a chance to taste his At The Hop and it was delicious. What makes cider unique? "Sharing our techniques or what some might consider trade secrets." Tom's "Free suggestion" for cider that will conquer the world - "If you make a bottle fermented cider with Wickson Crab Apple and put it in small bottles with just enough sweetness to balance it out - it will be the perfect celebratory wedding drink! What does the US cider offer that is different than the UK ciders? The "massive fruit aroma" which helps compensate for the absence of the bittersweet in the US. Other topics discussed in this chat: The implications of the CiderAct imp Concentrated juice's use in cidermaking Real cider and a probable definition of craft cider Who can call themself a craft cidermaker? For Tom only one things matters: is it a good cider, which he says is the starting point. What is good cider? When you smell it, it does this... When you taste it, it does that... and overall this is what you get with it... What Tom says about getting into the business of making cider. Need to look carefully and set your goals. Is it to make cider and perry or to make money? AND -Thank goodness for the course he took with Peter Mitchell in 1999 on principles and practices, so that he knew fully what he was getting into. "I get no satisfaction from huge amounts of money. What I do get satisfaction from is knowing that you have enough to make the best cider you can. If you are making the best cider, you see the reaction of the people tasting the cider." “I am my own undoing. But there have been many positives to come out of it.”Tom HardinThis week we explore some very new terrain.Let's kick it off with the Greek myth of Icarus. As the story goes, Daedalus — a master craftsman best known for building King Minos' labyrinth to trap the Minotaur — plied his talent to construct a pair of wax and feather wings to help him and his son Icarus escape from Minos' vendetta (it's a long story) and Crete altogether.Being the good father he was, Daedalus pled with his son not to fly too close to the sun for fear that the heat would melt the wings. But as sons are wont to do, Icarus ignored his father’s advice. The rest is history. The heat indeed melted Icarus' wings, sending him into a deathly free fall collision with the sea which today bears his name, the Ikarian Sea near Ikaria — ironically one of the Blue Zones as described in my recent podcast conversation with Dan Buettner. As most know, this is an age-old remonstration about ambition. A tragic allegory about the perils of hubris, particularly when fueled by a sense of entitlement, and perhaps sprinkled with a light dusting of denial. These are all very human traits of course. And if today's guest is anything, he is quite human indeed.Tom Hardin was a highly motivated young guy with a big bright future and Wall Street aspirations. After graduating from the prestigious Wharton School of Business, he was on track to achieve his dream when he landed in the fast paced hedge fund world and quickly rose through the ranks. But it wasn’t long before Tom felt he was falling behind – lacking that mysterious competitive ‘edge’ so many others seemed to freely enjoy (without repercussion) to their reward in untold millions. What was that edge? If you ask Tom, he will tell you the not so secret to success within the insular hedge fund world meant having a network of inside sources willing to share reliable confidential information about companies they worked for or with.Everybody's doing it. Nobody's getting caught. I'm falling behind. Then one day Tom got a call from an investor colleague named Roomy Khan – a woman with some pretty juicy insider tips. The timing was right. Tom was primed. And that fateful moment arose. That moment when you make a decision to take a very small step over a very important line. A decision you simply cannot undo. Not now, not ever. For Tom, it started with taking a few small crumbs off the table. An imperceptible insider trade here, another one there. Until one day, the previously unthinkable became easy. Almost too easy.Capitalizing on a handful of secrets fed by Khan and others about companies like Google, 3Com and Hilton Hotels, Tom's flight towards the sun escalated to the tune of $1.7 million in gains for his fund and $46K in personal profits. Then in July 2008, while dropping of his dry cleaning one morning, Tom felt a tap on the shoulder. A tap that would alter the trajectory of his life forever.Like a scene out of a movie, Tom turned to face two FBI agents boxing him in with with a Hobson's choice – either get in the back of the black sedan for a trip downtown, or start providing actionable information on those higher up the food chain.Panicked and heart pounding, he immediately opted for the latter.Ultimately, Tom became one of the most prolific informants in securities fraud history. Soon infamous as the mysterious, unnamed Tipper X, Tom spent the next several years wiretapping and documenting the illegal misdeeds of friends and c... How simple is it to leave behind a place that you know so well? A place that you built with your own two hands? Even if everyone else had already given up and moved on; could you still allow yourself to just walk away and forget it was ever there? For Tom, that place was Myspace, and deep down he knew he'd never leave...
