A man named Pat Flynn once taught the business internet how to make money while you sleep, with a concept called 'passive income'. Nowadays, one of the top search terms on Google is "best online courses websites" as people around the world attempt to get a leg up in this space, and monetise their acquired knowledge. But online courses are not the only way to monetise your knowledge, as online course marketing expert Tom Libelt explains in this episode of "Making Conversations Count." "Field of Dreams" told us that if we build it, they will come. But they probably won't actually... During this episode, Tom lifts the curtain on how most speakers get their apparent success at large speaking events. He explains to Wendy that they're usually getting a helping hand from the organisers, and so if their ideas and content suck, they're probably not going to realise it until they put it to market. To truly get ahead, you need to own assets especially assets that produce ongoing cash flow. Your job, if you choose to accept it, is to scream loudly on the back seat to distract the Polish border security checks! International smuggling was really a political choice, Tom explained. His Dad was never going to join the Communists (good thing too) and so the alternative was to hustle to survive. His parents wanted a legal, normal way of making money, which is why they chose to move to America. When Tom arrived in the States, he saw a lot of people hustling, but for others, and really getting nowhere. He worked a number of jobs. In sales. Once he was confident, he realised it was time to run his own business. The Logic For Going Online Rather Than Bricks n Mortar Tom invested in a couple of Bricks n Mortar businesses. The second, a coffee shop. Which meant he was serving food. And that meant, licenses and inspections and staff wages. The metrics were 75% outgoings and 25% margin for him. Not good maths from Tom's perspective. By getting rid of the overhead, Tom thought it would be 75% for him. And that's what happened. Once he moved to the internet his profit margin has always been between 60-80%. Initially, Tom offered SEO services. SEO back then was low barrier of entry, so he used his sales skills. Everyone he spoke to locally wrote him a cheque to get their businesses ranked. He was successful at helping niche businesses get ranked, but he learned a new lesson. That's where you build up a business on a particular platform THAT YOU DO NOT CONTROL and that platform delists you, or something similar. Tom recommended Convertkit for email marketing. Tom Libelt was born in Communist Poland and escaped to the US when he was 11 in the early ’90s. At 9, his father sold products at soccer stadiums in Eastern Europe, where he learned the hard way how to sell and how not to be hustled. He is hyper-focused on helping course creators market their online courses.   “Becoming a big fish in a smaller pond often is not only more profitable but will make your life easier.” Tom Libelt   Worst investment ever In his early 30s, Tom was running a reasonably successful SEO business. Back then, it was easy to rank on Google using what people today consider as blackhat methods. Tom would pay bloggers to get backlinks. Tom had a team of 14 writers at the time, spending a lot of time, money, and effort getting into these blogs. Their goal was to get 50 backlinks pointing to a website every month to keep it ranking higher. While he had other tactics, this model worked the best. Google gets smart After riding the wave for a long while, Google smartened up and was out for businesses doing shady stuff. Google destroyed almost all the blackhat networks. They looked at IP addresses and de-indexed them. Thousands of SEO companies were pretty much back to square one. Tom now had a massive team of writers with nowhere to put the blog posts. Trying option B Tom learned about Amazon Kindle (e-books) at around this time and decided to see if he could make a business out of it. He had a ready team of writers anyway. Tom told his team to pick topics of their choice, do keyword research and write up short books of about 30 to 40 pages, then use images to fill in some gaps and just publish them on Kindle. Competition at the time was little and so getting into Kindle was pretty easy. Striking gold About three months later, Tom’s writers broke even. So he thought this could work. Tom would now sit down with the team for two days, go over hundreds of topics and then pick the best to run with. Eventually, the team was pumping out about 250 books per month, and for about four or five years, the money coming in was quite good. Kindle shakes things up Making money on Kindle was pretty straightforward. You’d get 70% of sales made, and $1 for every book rented. Tom’s business was making a killing by pushing rentals. One day, out of the blues, Kindle killed the rental payment model. Now they would focus on pages read. Turning to blackhat tactics again After the new payment model, Tom turned to a blackhat marketing tactic where he told people in the introduction of the books to skip to the end to get the “Golden Nugget” and then come back to the beginning of the book. So everyone would just go straight up to the end of the book, and Tom would get paid. While this still got him money, it just wasn’t as lucrative. Closing the doors for good Tom’s marketing tactic worked for a while then one day, without any notice, his Kindle accounts got shut down. There was no explanation given, and he was not allowed to appeal the decision. Since Tom had no control over Kindle, there was nothing much he could do than accept the loss and move on. Tom had invested so much in the Kindle business just to have it go away overnight simply because his business model relied entirely on someone else’s business. Lessons learned Easy come, easy go Taking the easier way out may bear you fruit, but it won’t last long. You are better off working hard so that you can reap the fruits longer. Have control over your business Have your own business structure. Don’t depend on other people’s infrastructure. Always ask yourself where the control is? Who owns the control in the situation? If you don’t have control, then it’s not a good business idea. Andrew’s takeaways Build your own assets You have to build your assets instead of relying on others. It’s hard to do this, but it makes your business idea more solid. Know when you are riding a wave There are many ways to make money, and sometimes you will be taken advantage of, but always know when you’re riding a wave so that when it comes crashing, you’re not caught off guard. Actionable advice Keep your team small, if possible. Keep your schedule open because if you don’t have time to think and analyze your business, it won’t grow. Lastly, specialize. No. 1 goal for the next 12 months Tom’s number one goal for the next 12 months is to look at opportunities in the online course creation spaces so that he can diversify. This week’s Misfit Entrepreneur is Tom Libelt. Tom is the founder of Smart Brand Marketing, a company that focuses specifically on helping people better sell their online courses. Tom has had a very interesting life that basically made him an entrepreneur from the time he could walk and talk. He was born in communist Poland. By 7 years old, he was laying on the back seat of a car smuggling liquor into the country and his job was to cry and scream if immigration stopped them and wanted to check. At 9, he started helping his dad push products at soccer stadiums in eastern Europe. As he says, “He was hustled a few times by Russians and learned his lessons.” At 11, his family was able to escape communism and make it to the U.S. Tom became an entrepreneur because his family had to use entrepreneurship to survive. He then took those skills and used them succeed in a number of business ventures proving he’s a true Misfit Entrepreneur. www.smartbrandmarketing.com Tom has always had drive toward two different things, music and business. Early on, he focused more on music. He was creating his own music and working as an engineer, but was also working on businesses, etc. He’s tried a lot of things – retail, online businesses, selling products, etc. He knew how to sell, but wasn’t sure why he knew. He worked from everyone from Nestle to Metlife to learn the art of selling. Lessons from run-ins with Russians? When he was younger, he would sell VCRs and video tapes to make good money because they were illegal. He and his dad would move them. He learned hard lessons like when he got conned by Russians selling him soccer balls with no rubber inside. Or in trying to sell comic books and create value He also learned how to have a poker face and utilize human behavior and psychology. In studying human behavior, Tom learned to focus on the things that don’t change. What is it that doesn’t change? What can you teach us about how to sell? The drives, emotions, and whys don’t change for people. Health, wealth, happiness, etc. Selling is basically a transfer of emotions. You have to tap into people’s imaginations and let them bring their emotions into it. At the 11:30 mark, Tom talks about selling online today…. The way you sell doesn’t change – even in a changing world. First, you need to meet people where they are and on the level they are thinking. Empathy and understanding is key. Feel, felt, found. Stories sell and you need to use them to connect. Selling in person is easier because you can see the other person, their emotions and reactions. When selling online, you have to anticipate these reactions and have the answers and solutions baked into to your promotion. Where is it that most course sellers breakdown? What don’t they do that prevent them from making money? The main thing is the simplest thing – Does this course make sense and is there a compelling reason to buy it? It has to easily show it’s value in how it’s presented. You must be very clear and easy to understand on how you can truly help solve a problem. As an example, some of the easiest courses to sell are for things like a test to get a job and there is a very short time frame such as a Series 6 license or selling life insurance. In order to get the job, they need to pass the test and maybe have a month to do so. And the pitch becomes, “I will help you pass this test in the timeframe you need so you can (insert emotional need such as make more money, but the car, get the girl, etc.) Some of the most successful courses are prepping for tests or certifications. Tom does not work with courses on abundance or manifestation because he doesn’t believe in them and thus won’t work with them out of integrity. How do you help someone create an online course in 14 hours? Making the course isn’t the most important thing. 80% of success is marketing. But having a good system to create a course can make it easy and able to do quickly. Keeping it simple and basic is easiest way. From A-B, it is about a 14 hour process. Focus on the simple steps you need to bring your course to fruition – you can always make it better as time goes on. How do you market it and make upwards of $30,000 on a course? First, focus on the messaging. Even if you have 500-1000 of an audience, you have enough. You then take messaging after seeing the results from the audience, you then “rack the shotgun” and try across all platforms. Everything from Facebook to Quora. Based on the results, you then just keep narrowing in to see the best place to sell the most and focus. And focus on one course at a time, don’t try to do multiple courses at once and market them. Can you give an example of how you market on different platforms? Pull marketing Get people interested to come to them (sales page, etc.) Using case studies, social proof, and sharing unique processes. You need to do 2 things: The right audience and the right product, but also a 3rd thing – education. You need to educate people to have them like you. You have to make the connection as to why the course creator is the right person to learn from. At the 31 min mark, Tom talks about the challenges of being successful with courses. What are some of the best entrepreneur lessons you learned from the music business? In music, it about knowing the right people – a lot of gatekeepers. It was lesson in how important it is to build your network well. For most, it is a short career, so you have to be setting yourself up for life after music and as entrepreneurs, we need to be setting our business up the market changes that come our way. Do it your way. Hold your ground. Don’t try to copy other exactly the way they are as you will be a crappy copy of them. Craft your own style. At the 39 min mark, Tom talks about why meeting his heroes was such a disappointment and lessons learned from working with “stars…” You don’t’ always get to do what you like. Professionals get in and get it done – regardless of how they feel or how things are going. Lauren Hill left the studio because the “grapes were soggy on the table…” TI was someone who came in and was lesser known at the time. He was all business and got it done. You can see someone’s career trajectory by how the operate in the studio. Are they focused, serious, ready, and go to work or do they mess around, waste time, etc. “Don’t be the person who needs special slippers and McDonald’s from 34th Avenue to record a track…” ​ You started a coffee shop in Atlanta, but don’t drink coffee? How did that work out? We all have our impulsive buys. This was Tom’s. He was in a place where he was deciding to do next and wanted to buy a business. He sold within 6 months. Any favorite place you’ve lived around the world? Japan is amazing in a lot of ways. Very nice, organized, great culture, etc. But at times, it is too rigid and too organized. Thailand is exactly the opposite – it’s the wild west. Splitting time is good. Standard of living is different where you are. Starting his life in Poland, he learned from a young age how to sell and negotiate business by getting haggled by Russian vendors. His family moved from Poland to the US to escape communism, and his parents took any job they could to survive. This was a huge learning curve for him, and seeing his parents work their tails off truly motivated him to never want a job. He didn't care what it was as such, but certainly the drive to earn his own cash, scaled his earning potential and living the life of his dreams was now his to work towards. And that is what he did, moving forward as an entrepreneur, publisher, salesman, and one of the top Polish hip hop artists. All of these hustle and online commitment allowed him to move where he wants to be across the world, leading him to Chiang Mai, Thailand. How The Dots Joined For Tom He now runs Smart Brand Marketing and We Market Online Courses, and too many seem like one of those guys with the Midas Touch, where everything he works on turns into gold. He has published around 5000 Kindle books, built a successful SEO & online course marketing business, partnered with a Muay Thai champion, owned a coffee shop, a retail store, a record label, created a documentary, and released two albums with five hits on top ten Polish radio. All of it was bootstrapped and done with zero outside funding. As he says "“If you can't sell, then you're not in business. Marketing and Sales are the backbone of a company.”  So of course with so many strings to his bow, is there something that he loves more than anything? But, thankfully, those rash decisions, along with some grit and determination has turned Tom into an incredibly successful serial entrepreneur with a wealth of experience under his belt, ranging from coffee shop owner to expert in re-marketing ad campaigns. In this episode, Tom and Estie dive deep into the marketing aspect of online courses, including what to include in your course, how to find the right target for it and how to build your remarketing ad campaign. We also discuss Tom's real struggle with EBS, the incurable, yet manageable Entrepreneurial Boredom Syndrome and how to keep going when it seems like an endless treadmill of building your business, getting it systemized, getting bored and then starting again.   My Guest: Tom LibeltTom Libelt was born in Communist Poland, but he escaped to the US at the age of 11. The only games Tom played around the house had to do with money changing hands (don't ask as he'd have a hard time explaining this one). The medical field was terrible and all his teeth back then were fixed without any numbing. His first computer was a Commodore 64. It took over 10 minutes to load a game from a tape deck. If it did not… he had to use a screwdriver to adjust the magnets in the tape deck and try again. Grew up in a generation that ran around for hours without any supervision.   Episode Highlights:[5:37]: Because in Poland, everyone thought if you work in a corporate job in America, you made it. But no, not really. I quickly realized I'm just a number. [13:09]: I was at a house party in Chicago. And I was very impulsive back then, and someone just said like, “Hey, you know, if you want to become an engineer, you should go to school” to someone else, they weren't even talking to me. And I was like, I'm gonna go to that school. So then I sold everything and I went to Full Sail. [16:19]: I was, again, impulsive. And I was like, Okay, I'm done with New York. And I was looking around for something to get into. And I started looking for businesses, and I found a coffee shop in Atlanta, the size of Starbucks, and I bought into that and just moved down. I quickly realized that's not a good business for me. I don't like being a watchdog, making sure everything's working. I don't drink coffee. [33:49]: Well the thing with re-marketing is, you can often get between four and ten X on your spend with re-marketing. If it's done with cold traffic, it's not the same level. [39:33]: Well, to sell a course there are some basics… The main thing is, you got to figure out a good transformation in your course, right? So from A to Z, like you said. I want to take you from being a regular, confused business guy, to never having to pay for marketing again. [51:32]: The safest way is to start with warm traffic which is organic, then re-marketing and then paid to cold. What I find a lot of people are trying to do is skip the warm traffic, skip the remarketing, because they don't know what that is, and just go straight to cold. And that's the worst way to do it. [56:40]: I'll start something new and then I get tired of it. So I build a system, I sit around for a while, and again, and again, and it just never stops. And I was looking around for something to get into. And I started looking for businesses, and I found a coffee shop in Atlanta, the size of Starbucks, and I bought into that and just moved down. I quickly realized that’s not a good business for me. I don’t like being a watchdog, making sure everything’s working. I don’t drink coffee. [33:49]: Well the thing with re-marketing is, you can often get between four and ten X on your spend with re-marketing. If it’s done with cold traffic, it’s not the same level. [39:33]: Well, to sell a course there are some basics… The main thing is, you got to figure out a good transformation in your course, right? So from A to Z, like you said. I want to take you from being a regular, confused business guy, to never having to pay for marketing again. [51:32]: The safest way is to start with warm traffic which is organic, then re-marketing and then paid to cold. What I find a lot of people are trying to do is skip the warm traffic, skip the remarketing, because they don’t know what that is, and just go straight to cold. And that’s the worst way to do it. [56:40]: I’ll start something new and then I get tired of it. So I build a system, I sit around for a while, and again, and again, and it just never stops. Born in Communist Poland…. Tom and his family escaped to the US when he was 11 in the early 90’s. Tom ran a record store with two older friends. Became a DJ and played at colleges, bars, radio stations, clubs and raves. Three degrees. Two associates and one bachelor. Marketing – Business to business & Sound engineer. Straight out of college I moved to New York and got an internship at Unique Recording Studios. Eventually he moved on to Assistant Engineer and then Engineer before all the studios started shutting down. Had 3 hits in the top 10 on the local polish radio… one was #1 for almost a year. After working in sales for all of these corporations I realized that they were the ones making residual income from my hard work and I always started from zero each month. Used his SEO skills to talk to local business and landed my initial clients. Before he knew he had an agency with workers and made more than he ever did in his corporate jobs. One of the blog networks that he used for SEO became too popular and Google shut it down. That left him with 1,500+ blog posts and a team of writers with nothing to do. He told them to start writing books and left them alone. That became profitable and he went on to write 5,000+ books and making $250,000+ Lesson learned for his SEO biz… do not use private blog networks! He created better systems and tighter constraints for what he would pursue but it turned out ok. He later got a team together and made a documentary about the realities of building/running businesses when on the road. Over the last few years he got into podcasting. One of his SEO clients is a Muay Thai Champion and he went on to create an online course and market it. Tom Libelt A sound engineer in New York who became the top Hip Hop artist in Poland and controlled the charts for over a year By the age of 7.. he was smuggling liquor back into the country (was supposed to cry and scream if the immigration wanted to check). With a background in both sound engineering and marketing, Tom’s career journey is both inspirational and eventful. ow do you deal with uncertainty as a salesperson? It's definitely a tough thing that can wipe some people out. Tom Libelt has been a salesman for almost 20 years; inside sales, outside sales, retail, large corporations – you name it. He has a couple of his own companies as well and is currently focused on the marketing of online courses. Tom credits just getting up every morning and going to work as the secret to his success. And, he never leaves anything half-finished. You don't have to accomplish ten million things in one day – aim for two or three. It is amazing how much you can achieve in a year if you just check two or three items off each day. You could record an album, get a degree, open a store … In this way, Tom has been able to 5x his company in just three months. PLAN AHEAD He says the trick is to plan ahead the night before so as not to lose your focus, momentum, and energy trying to figure it all out the next morning. When Tom is in the middle of a really fun project, he sometimes will let it set overnight just so he can enjoy it again for another day. Leaving something overnight, however, also just bugs him the whole night; he can't stop thinking about it. He wakes up looking forward to finishing it. In his experience, completing a great project first thing in the morning establishes the work flow for the rest of the day. You will already be in the mindset to get things done. DEALING WITH UNCERTAINTY Dealing with uncertainty is especially difficult as a salesperson. We hear ‘No' more than anyone else in any profession. It can be a real roller coaster ride: Got a sale! … No sale…. Almost got a sale …hot lead! … nothing. It is especially hard when there is a target to hit. The ride can last two or three weeks before it lands on a sale. It's a grind sometimes and it can chip away at your confidence – and increase your uncertainty – if you don't have the experience to handle it. As a salesperson, Tom defines uncertainty as a feeling that nothing is working. It is that moment when the negative thoughts start to take over and you begin to worry. It is when the confidence and experience you need to know you will be okay are not there. Those moments are fueled by fear and the worst decisions are often made as a result. Imagine trying to close a deal and being terrified of what might happen if you fail. The client can sense that fear and you will not close that deal despite all your abilities. The wrong value and emotions are transferred to the client. Clients don't buy when they are scared. You wouldn't want a hesitant doctor – you want a confident doctor.  It is the same with sales. PROJECT CONFIDENCE We have to project competence, confidence, and professionalism. Tom isn't concerned whether or not his clients like him but he does want them to trust and respect him. Tom is of the belief that although having a strong opinion may not always earn you friends, it will earn you respect. Clients don't want someone who is trying to cater to everyone; they want someone who is confident and able to fix their problem. Tom and his no-nonsense approach have closed many sales. He doesn't tell his clients what they want to hear. He tells them what they need to hear. Respect comes from being honest. Trust comes from delivering. #Deliver CLICK TO TWEET Sometimes the respect comes automatically because you are working for a well-established brand name but only you, as a salesperson, can earn trust and confidence. If you are dealing with uncertainty, if you had a poor showing in 2018 for example, Tom believes that 99% of the time it stems from a lack of prospecting. You have to prospect to fill the sales funnel. Sitting around waiting for the phone to ring is a recipe for uncertainty. THE FUNDAMENTALS If you follow the fundamentals, you can succeed. You have to make a start and you have to put in the work. Just because someone hung up on you one time doesn't mean it will happen every time. Don't let uncertainty keep you from continuing to try. I especially like working with novices because they aren't afraid. It is the flip side of experience – they haven't failed enough times to be afraid to try again. Tom also believes that, as a whole, we have become soft. Instead of cold calling or going door-to-door, we now have technology that allows us to stay at our desk. We no longer have to deal with brutal weather or slamming doors. Stop asking for permission. Instead of asking your manager how to best handle a call, or what you should do next, Tom says to just do it! The worst thing that could happen is that the client will say ‘No.' If that happens, and it will sometimes, just move on and try again. You never know what will happen unless you do it, unless you keep trying. You can't score unless you step up to the plate and swing the bat. Sales needs momentum. Tom realizes that, in the past, he wasn't always the most successful salesperson. He knows there were times when he slacked off on prospecting, especially after a having a good week. He was forced to restart the process over and over again as a result. As long as you do what it takes, good things will happen. Do prospect. Do fill that sales funnel. Stop the amateur nonsense.
