Politics is a battlefield, and right now, Democrats are struggling to break free from the traps set by Republicans. In this episode Rick Wilson sits with Democratic strategist Joel Payne to discuss the current political landscape and the challenges facing the Democratic Party. They break down the Republican Party's attempts to box Democrats in on spending bills, the broader cultural and messaging battles, and how Democrats can better connect with voters by focusing on real-world concerns rather than policy jargon. Payne offers insight on the evolving political spectrum, the need for Democrats to fight smarter, and how Trump's chaos-driven approach presents both challenges and opportunities. Welcome back to Booked Up, a podcast that features you, me and our favorite authors. We release a new episode every Sunday morning. Today for the December book club, we are discussing Norman Lear, the Hollywood legend who passed this month at the young age of 101. There are gazillion people who have a thing or two to say about this ground-breaking writer, director, producer, activist. So, to anchor our conversation, Jen selected his best-selling memoir Even This I Get to Experience, published by Penguin Books in 2014. With a blend of sheer luck, immense creativity, and epic perseverance, Lear created programs for television and film that transformed television for the better. Known best for situation comedies: All in the Family, The Jeffersons, Maude, and Good Times, Norman Lear brought diverse, complicated families into our living rooms night after night, year after year. His films include cult favorites like This is Spinal Tap and The Princess Bride. May his memory be a blessing. Less known is his work in founding the non-profit People for the American Way. Here to talk about Norman Lear today on the Book Club are two friends of the show and a new for us here at Booked Up. First the new guy: David Kusnet. David was one of the first staffers hired by Norman for People for the American Way where he was the VP for communications.. After working there, David went on to chief speechwriter for former President Bill Clinton during the 1992 campaign. He is the author of Speaking American and Love the Work, Hate the Job and co-author Also returning to the show today are Dr. Bridgette Baldwin and Comedian Judy Gold. Bridgette teaches courses in criminal law and also Critical Race Theory. Her scholarly work has examined the intersection of the 9th Amendment and social movements, as well as, the convergence of race, class and gender on welfare reform legislation. She is a Professor of Law at the Western New England University School of Law. Also joining the book club today is two-time Emmy-Award winning comedian Judy Gold. Judy is a comedian, actor, and writer. She's the author of: Yes, I Can Say That: When They Come for the Comedians, We Are All in Trouble. What a freaking fun and interesting conversation. Marijo has been making the world more accessible, one conservation at a time. For over 30 years, she's been signing her way, being of service to the deaf and hard of hearing community. Marijo Fiacchino's resume is lengthy and her credibility is solid - she has her Certification of Interpretation (CI) and Certification of Transliteration (CT), she is RID (Registry of Interpretation for th Deaf) Certified. She has a Masters Level license in Illinois, and is qualified as an Illinois Master Mentor. So, we know she's capable, she's educated, and she's driven. But until you speak with her, or shall we say, let her speak, you wouldn't know how passionate she is for this work that she loves, how much compassion she is for her deaf and hearing clients, and how much she views her life's work as service to a marginalized community. The world needs more people like Marijo. And she's hilarious, to boot.
Eleanor LeCain talks about the State of the Union, the achievements of President Biden and Democrats in his first two years, what remains to be done, and the inside story of how a major presidential speech is written, with David Kusnet, chief speechwriter for President Bill Clinton in the White House and author of 5 books including Speaking American.

Hello Language Lovers. Thank you for joining me for this episode of Speaking Tongues- the podcast in conversation with multilinguals. This week, I am joined by Wanyā, an American Sign Language interpreter and we are talking about all things ASL! Now this is just the audio version of our conversation and I really think the best way to listen in on our conversation would be to head over to YouTube and watch the video of our chat. In this episode, Wanyā tells us how ASL came into his life and how he started signing. We talk about things that may not be known by people outside of the deaf community, the basics of ASL and some of the first things that one learns in this language. Wanyā tells us why it's important to learn ASL from a deaf person and how we can respectfully engage with the deaf community. He tells us how the interpretation profession works on a technical level and we talk about the different types of ASL interpretation. We also touch briefly on Black American Sign Language and in a second episode we are diving into a deeper conversation about Black American Sign Language with Dr. Joseph C. Hill of the Rochester Institute of Technology. You can find both of these episodes on YouTube and while you are over there, please make sure you subscribe, like and comment on these videos so that I will know that you are interested in more of this type of content. Big thank you to Wanya for not only coming to chat with me about ASL but for also facilitating an introduction to Dr. Hill for episode 106 and for you time and effort in providing the closed captioning for this episode.
