Paul Harvey - Tinkers to Evers to Chance
In this episode of Expanded Perspectives, Kyle takes the reins solo at Skelekin Studios. Don't worry, he's got plenty of fascinating stories to share! First, he dives into a chilling account of a Duende encounter that happened during a late-night basketball game in Mexico. Then, a listener calls in to recount a possible Bigfoot sighting in Washington state. After the break, Kyle explores the mysterious and seemingly impossible encounters people have had with gnomes, trolls, and Duendes. Few phenomena are as peculiar in the realm of the weird and unexplained as reports of real-life gnome sightings. These mysterious beings, complete with diminutive statures, beards, and iconic pointy hats, seem like something straight out of a fairy tale. While the idea of encountering such creatures might sound absurd—given their deep roots in mythology—numerous accounts from people across all walks of life suggest otherwise. This show will delve into fascinating stories of gnomes or duende sightings that defy explanation. All of this and more on this installment of Expanded Perspectives! She also lays out the four focuses of the Tinker program—lifestyle, leadership, wealth and scaling—and explains how mentorship ensures gym owners stay on track while leveling up in each area.No matter where you are in your entrepreneurial journey, this episode will help you start thinking about how to set and reach long-term goals. Gym owners in Two-Brain's Tinker group have hit about $100,000 in net owner benefit and are working toward reaching $1 million net worth. In fact, the program has certified 54 millionaire gym owners—with seven earning that status in the last quarter alone.Today on “Run a Profitable Gym,” Mike Warkentin sits down with Joleen Bingham, one of the program's leaders, to explain exactly how top gym owners use Tinker to level up. Tinkers focus on four pillars that strengthen their businesses and personal lives: wealth, leadership, lifestyle and scaling. - Wealth: creating a legacy for your family.- Leadership: fixing yourself so you can fix your business.- Lifestyle: increasing happiness, health and freedom.- Scaling: expanding your gym or making other investments. Gym owners in the Tinker program attend four in-person meetups per year with workshops and expert speakers, and they meet weekly online to learn and solve problems together. They also have access to mentors and a huge pile of resources in a special toolkit.Perhaps the most valuable part of the Tinker group is the relationships with like-minded gym owners who share similar goals. It's common to hear stuff like this at a Tinker meet-up: "I've done what you want to do. Here's exactly how I did it, and here's how you can avoid a few mistakes I made."Whether you're just getting started with your gym or you're several years in, you don't have to go it alone. Known primarily for his book "The Pilgrim’s Progress," John Bunyan was also a preacher, a gifted theologian and an interpreter of Scripture. If you can believe it, he wasn’t a super-educated man. But when it came to practical application and a good handle on the Scriptures and their theology, he was tremendously gifted by God! All of his writings have a beauty and practicality uncommon for his age and for that matter, ours! They discuss the ARC conference, the glacial periods throughout Earth's geological history, where we are now in the cycle, the gross fallacy of the Net Zero movement, the harsh realities of energy in the developing world, and the necessary balancing we can do right now in order to uplift all people, in all places. Dr. Scott Tinker is an American geologist, educator, energy expert, and documentary filmmaker. Tinker has appeared in more than 20 documentary films with the intent to communicate scientific ideas to the general public. The 2012 film “Switch” presents a scientifically based look at the global energy transition. It's been screened in over 600 colleges and has gained a following for the Switch Energy Alliance, which brings in young people to learn about the processes of sustainable energy firsthand, while broadening discussion on the matter in an open format setting. Michael O. Johnston sits down with Maitrayee Deka, Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Essex to discuss her new book Traders and Tinkers: Bazaars in the Global Economy (Stanford University Press, 2023). The term "tinker" calls to mind nomadic medieval vendors who operate on the fringe of formal society. Excluded from elite circles and characterized by an ability to leverage minimal resources, these tradesmen live and die by their ability to adapt their stores to the popular tastes of the day. In Delhi in the 21st century, an extensive network of informal marketplaces, or bazaars, has evolved over the course of the city's history, across colonial and postcolonial regimes. Their resilience as an economic system is the subject of this book. Today, instead of mending and selling fabrics and pots, these street vendors are primarily associated with electronic products—computers, cell phones, motherboards, and video games. This book offers a deep ethnography of three Delhi bazaars, and a cast of tinkers, traders, magicians, street performers, and hackers who work there. It is an exploration, and recognition, of the role of bazaars and tinkers in the modern global economy, driving globalization from below. In Delhi, and across the world, these street markets work to create a new information society, as the global popular classes aspire to elite consumer goods they cannot afford except in counterfeit. Michael O. Johnston, Ph.D. is a Assistant Professor of Sociology at William Penn University. He is the author of The Social Construction of a Cultural Spectacle: Floatzilla (Lexington Books, 2023) and Community Media Representations of Place and Identity at Tug Fest: Reconstructing the Mississippi River (Lexington Books, 2022). Paul Harding says it's no accident that the residents of the small interracial community he imagined for his new book are uprooted from their island home at the same time as the first International Eugenics Congress was being held in London. In fact, learning about the conference inspired him to write his book. The seeds of “This Other Eden” are planted in the true story of Malaga Island, an isolated island off the coast of Maine that was one of the first racially integrated towns in the northeastern United States. Populated by Native Americans, freed slaves and European Americans, the inhabitants led a sheltered — some would say naïve — life, unaware of the uniqueness of their situation. Their community was shattered in 1911, when Maine government officials inspected the island and found the mixed races offensive. All 47 residents of Malaga were evicted, and some were rehoused in institutions for the "feeble-minded." Maine publicly apologized for this deed in 2010. But the real-life story inspired Harding to imagine what it would have been like for the inhabitants to be displaced from their own private Eden, even as the world debated how to cull the weak from the herd, and who is worthy of salvation. Displacement is an archetype, Harding told MPR News host Kerri Miller on this week's Big Books and Bold Ideas. The Israelites were forced out of Egypt, humanity out of the Garden of Eden. “It's essentially human,” he says, “as old as humanity but also as contemporary as this morning.” Who gets to decide the norms? If some groups live on the margins, who set the boundaries? Don't miss this thoughtful and introspective conversation. Guests: Paul Harding is the author of the Pulitzer Prize–winning “Tinkers.” He is director of the MFA in Creative Writing & Literature at Stony Brook University, and lives on Long Island, New York. His new novel is “This Other Eden.” To listen to the full conversation you can use the audio player above. Paul Harding won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for Tinkers, ''an astringent meditation on loss, family ties, and the presence of the past'' (The Guardian) in which a dying elderly man wanders through the rooms of his life's large and quiet moments. He is also the author of the novel Enon and is an accomplished musician. The director of the MFA in Creative Writing & Literature at Stony Brook University, Harding is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and the PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize. Based on the true story of one of the first integrated towns in the Northeast, This Other Eden tells the multigenerational story of an isolated island community off the coast of Maine. Referred to by Yiyun Li as ''one of the most unique voices in American literature,'' Hanna Pylväinen is the author of the Whiting Award-winning debut novel We Sinners, the story of a devout but fragmented Midwestern family. A faculty member of Warren Wilson College's MFA writing program, she has earned fellowships from Princeton University's Lewis Center for the Arts and the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, among others. Her work has been published in numerous periodicals, including Harper's Magazine, The New York Times, Chicago Tribune, and The Wall Street Journal. In The End of Drum-Time, Pylväinen weaves the love story of a reindeer herder and a minister's daughter on the remote 19th century Scandinavian tundra. (recorded 2/23/2023)

Irish Travellers, known in their own language as Mincéirs or Pavees and in Irish called ‘An Lucht Siúil or, ‘The Walking People', are a nomadic ethnic minority in Ireland with a distinct history, culture and identity. Historically, Travellers were called Tinkers, a reference to their trade as tinsmiths, and they also made a living through engaging with the settled community; by buying and selling animals, or through seasonal farm labour. They've also long been renowned as singers, musicians and storytellers who brought news, tales, songs and music from townland to townland, parish to parish and county to county as they travelled around Ireland. As a minority group however, Ireland's Travellers they have long-faced discrimination on the basis of their ethnicity, and are often reported as the subject of explicit prejudice in Irish society. For this episode of the podcast, I hope to enter into an exploration of Traveller culture and identity, and I'm honoured to be joined by David Joyce; an advocate for the Traveller community who has worked as both a barrister and a solicitor, and Áine Furey, a singer, musician, tour guide and alumna of the Department of Irish Folklore here at UCD. I hope you'll keep us company for the next hour or so as we come to know and honour the culture, traditions, perspectives and experiences of Ireland's Travelling people, to whom this episode is dedicated. Ah, yes - we've arrived at the reason why we held off on covering Sam Raimi for so long…because we didn't want to end our series on such a dismal note! “Oz the Great and Powerful” - Raimi's last feature until the recent “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” - features James Franco in a performance that guest Dana Schwartz (“Noble Blood”) characterizes as “having the energy of a hot boy in a school play who's laughing with his friends in the front row.” It doesn't have the tactile, zippy cinematic language of Raimi's best work, instead opting for the popular hyper-saturated, entirely digital look of Tim Burton's “Alice in Wonderland” (a clear influence). But it *does* have a little girl made of porcelain who almost made Ben cry. Topics discussed include our desire for a Mila Kunissance, Zach Braff being the surprise MVP in this movie, whether “Tinkers” are a specific ethnicity or a class or workers, and the Disney IP lawyers who had to be on set making sure nothing infringed on MGM's copyright of the classic Oz visuals.
