In a world defined by violence, power, and the turning of the Wheel… what does it mean to choose peace? This week on the podcast, we dive deep into one of the most fascinating—and misunderstood—groups in The Wheel of Time: the Tinkers, also known as the Traveling People. From their origins as the Da'shain Aiel to their unwavering commitment to the Way of the Leaf, we explore the philosophy that rejects violence in a world that demands it. Is their pacifism noble… or naive? Are they preserving something ancient and vital—or clinging to a broken ideal? We break down:
In this episode, we hear from Rob, a lifelong resident of Portage County, Ohio, who shares a series of encounters that began years before the recent headlines ever reached his area.Driving late at night through the backroads near Mantua, he comes face to face with something massive standing just off the roadside. Tall, broad, covered in dark fur, and gone within seconds, the moment sticks with him long after he tries to move on.Time passes, and the experiences continue. A quiet night on a deck overlooking farmland turns into something else entirely as branches snap in the distance, a strange scream cuts through the air, and a towering figure moves along the tree line under moonlight. This time, he isn't the only one who sees it.As more conversations unfold, a pattern begins to emerge. Others in the same area have seen similar figures. Similar builds. Similar behavior. Reports that stayed quiet for years begin to line up in ways that are hard to ignore. From the wetlands around Mantua to the developing edges of Streetsboro, Rob describes the sounds, the movement, and the unsettling reactions from wildlife that seem to signal something just out of sight. These are the encounters that happened before anyone was calling it a flap.
Coming up this March 28th and 29th, get ready for a wonderful evening of classic Irish theatre as Quin Players take to the stage. Featuring the much-loved one-act plays The Workhouse Ward and The Tinkers' Wedding, this lively double bill is packed with humor, heart, and unforgettable characters. Directed by Frank Murphy, it's all happening at St. Fineen's Hall. To find out more, Alan Morrissey spoke with Patricia Foley and Mike Daffy on Monday's Morning Focus.
Today, a poem that I've turned into a song for second post honoring two Irish-American poets who led an annual St. Patrick's Day poetry reading in Minnesota for several years before their death. Of the two, Ethna McKiernan had more direct ties to Ireland, having spent some time living in Dublin, and eventually in Minnesota running an Irish arts store in the Twin Cities for many years. When she would read her poem "The Day My Mother Gave Me Away to the Tinkers" she would instruct the listeners that, just as with many people, her busy mother had issued that threat in jest, and that the subject of this poem was her teenage mind thinking "Well, I'll take her up and that, and then she'll be sorry." Of course, in order to realize this new song, there's a man singing this mother-daugher poem. That might be a detriment. And I made a mistake singing the name of a baker mentioned in the poem, Johnston Mooney and O'Brien. I dropped the "Johnston" but at first figured, no one would care, that it must be just some immaterial tiny particular bakery -- but it turns out that firm is a very famous Irish bakery, Oh well. I hope you enjoy the song anyway. And if you want to get it right, it's in her final new and selected collection available from her Irish publisher at this link. The Parlando Project takes various words (mostly literary poetry) and combines them with original music in differing styles. We've done over 850 of these combinaitons, and you can hear any of them and read about our encounters with the words at our blog and archives located at frankhudson.org

In 1965, John and Mary Beth Tinker protested the Vietnam War by wearing black arm bands to school. The incident led to a landmark Supreme Court decision that guaranteed free speech rights for public school students. The Tinkers reflect on this history and present day threats to the First Amendment. Later, a new play from playwright Megan Gogerty works through her complicated feelings about her father and family's history as a sixth generation Iowan.

I interviewed Paul Harding, who won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for his very first novel Tinkers. Unlike most novelists, he's not really interested in plots, and only halfway interested in characters. So what is he interested in? He's focused on describing the wonders and mysteries of life, teaching us how to see, hear, and feel more vividly, and how to translate those sensations onto the page. Hey! I'm David Perell and I'm a writer, teacher, and podcaster. I believe writing online is one of the biggest opportunities in the world today. For the first time in human history, everybody can freely share their ideas with a global audience. I seek to help as many people publish their writing online as possible. In this episode of Expanded Perspectives, Kyle takes the reins solo at Skelekin Studios. Don't worry, he's got plenty of fascinating stories to share! First, he dives into a chilling account of a Duende encounter that happened during a late-night basketball game in Mexico. Then, a listener calls in to recount a possible Bigfoot sighting in Washington state. After the break, Kyle explores the mysterious and seemingly impossible encounters people have had with gnomes, trolls, and Duendes. Few phenomena are as peculiar in the realm of the weird and unexplained as reports of real-life gnome sightings. These mysterious beings, complete with diminutive statures, beards, and iconic pointy hats, seem like something straight out of a fairy tale. While the idea of encountering such creatures might sound absurd—given their deep roots in mythology—numerous accounts from people across all walks of life suggest otherwise. This show will delve into fascinating stories of gnomes or duende sightings that defy explanation. All of this and more on this installment of Expanded Perspectives! Gym owners in Two-Brain's Tinker group have hit about $100,000 in net owner benefit and are working toward reaching $1 million net worth. In fact, the program has certified 54 millionaire gym owners—with seven earning that status in the last quarter alone.Today on “Run a Profitable Gym,” Mike Warkentin sits down with Joleen Bingham, one of the program's leaders, to explain exactly how top gym owners use Tinker to level up. Tinkers focus on four pillars that strengthen their businesses and personal lives: wealth, leadership, lifestyle and scaling. - Wealth: creating a legacy for your family.- Leadership: fixing yourself so you can fix your business.- Lifestyle: increasing happiness, health and freedom.- Scaling: expanding your gym or making other investments. Gym owners in the Tinker program attend four in-person meetups per year with workshops and expert speakers, and they meet weekly online to learn and solve problems together. They also have access to mentors and a huge pile of resources in a special toolkit.Perhaps the most valuable part of the Tinker group is the relationships with like-minded gym owners who share similar goals. It's common to hear stuff like this at a Tinker meet-up: "I've done what you want to do. Here's exactly how I did it, and here's how you can avoid a few mistakes I made."Whether you're just getting started with your gym or you're several years in, you don't have to go it alone. Known primarily for his book "The Pilgrim’s Progress," John Bunyan was also a preacher, a gifted theologian and an interpreter of Scripture. If you can believe it, he wasn’t a super-educated man. But when it came to practical application and a good handle on the Scriptures and their theology, he was tremendously gifted by God! All of his writings have a beauty and practicality uncommon for his age and for that matter, ours! They discuss the ARC conference, the glacial periods throughout Earth's geological history, where we are now in the cycle, the gross fallacy of the Net Zero movement, the harsh realities of energy in the developing world, and the necessary balancing we can do right now in order to uplift all people, in all places. Dr. Scott Tinker is an American geologist, educator, energy expert, and documentary filmmaker. Michael O. Johnston sits down with Maitrayee Deka, Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Essex to discuss her new book Traders and Tinkers: Bazaars in the Global Economy (Stanford University Press, 2023). The term "tinker" calls to mind nomadic medieval vendors who operate on the fringe of formal society. Excluded from elite circles and characterized by an ability to leverage minimal resources, these tradesmen live and die by their ability to adapt their stores to the popular tastes of the day. In Delhi in the 21st century, an extensive network of informal marketplaces, or bazaars, has evolved over the course of the city's history, across colonial and postcolonial regimes. Their resilience as an economic system is the subject of this book. Today, instead of mending and selling fabrics and pots, these street vendors are primarily associated with electronic products—computers, cell phones, motherboards, and video games. This book offers a deep ethnography of three Delhi bazaars, and a cast of tinkers, traders, magicians, street performers, and hackers who work there. It is an exploration, and recognition, of the role of bazaars and tinkers in the modern global economy, driving globalization from below. In Delhi, and across the world, these street markets work to create a new information society, as the global popular classes aspire to elite consumer goods they cannot afford except in counterfeit. Michael O. Johnston, Ph.D. is a Assistant Professor of Sociology at William Penn University. He is the author of The Social Construction of a Cultural Spectacle: Floatzilla (Lexington Books, 2023) and Community Media Representations of Place and Identity at Tug Fest: Reconstructing the Mississippi River (Lexington Books, 2022). His general area of study is about the construction of identity and place. He is currently conducting research for his next project that looks at nightlife and the emotional labor that is performed by bouncers at bars and nightclubs. To learn more about Michael O. Ah, yes - we've arrived at the reason why we held off on covering Sam Raimi for so long…because we didn't want to end our series on such a dismal note! “Oz the Great and Powerful” - Raimi's last feature until the recent “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” - features James Franco in a performance that guest Dana Schwartz (“Noble Blood”) characterizes as “having the energy of a hot boy in a school play who's laughing with his friends in the front row.” It doesn't have the tactile, zippy cinematic language of Raimi's best work, instead opting for the popular hyper-saturated, entirely digital look of Tim Burton's “Alice in Wonderland” (a clear influence). But it *does* have a little girl made of porcelain who almost made Ben cry. Topics discussed include our desire for a Mila Kunissance, Zach Braff being the surprise MVP in this movie, whether “Tinkers” are a specific ethnicity or a class or workers, and the Disney IP lawyers who had to be on set making sure nothing infringed on MGM's copyright of the classic Oz visuals.
