On February 10, 2008, Fred Frederickson and James Osborne started what should have been a routine winter day hike on New Hampshire's Franconia Ridge. Within hours, conditions changed catastrophically—temperatures plummeted to single digits, winds reached seventy miles per hour, and both men were fighting for their lives on an exposed mountain ridge. As night fell and the storm intensified, rescue teams mobilized for a desperate search in some of the most dangerous conditions imaginable. This episode explores the cascade of small decisions that turned a beautiful Sunday hike into a tragedy, and the extraordinary efforts of the rescuers who risked everything to bring them home. A story about friendship, survival, and the unforgiving nature of winter in the White Mountains. 00:46 Welcome to The Crux + Listener Shoutout 01:25 Eyelids Frozen Shut on Little Haystack 02:17 Meet Fred & James + The Franconia Ridge Loop Plan 04:47 Overdressed, Sweating, and Wet Layers 05:46 The Forecast They Missed: 70–100 MPH Winds Incoming 06:40 Above Treeline: The Storm ‘Switch' Flips 08:48 No Shelter, No Fire: Hypothermia Signs and the Fight Back to Haystack 11:12 Night in a Rock Cave: Deep Hypothermia and Rewarming Basics 15:24 Missing from Work: Search Teams Mobilize in Brutal Conditions 17:37 Found on the Ridge: Black Hawk Night Landing Rescue 19:07 Hospital Battle: ‘Warm and Dead,' Rewarming, and Frostbite Losses 20:58 Aftermath & Lessons: Hike Safe Tips 27:14 Final Takeaways + Book Rec Listen AD FREE: Support our podcast at patreaon: http://patreon.com/TheCruxTrueSurvivalPodcast Email us! thecruxsurvival@gmail.com Instagram https://www.instagram.com/thecruxpodcast/ Get schooled by Julie in outdoor wilderness medicine! https://www.headwatersfieldmedicine.com/ References: Boston Globe, September 15, 2008 - "Hiker recounts horrific struggle for survival on icy N.H. ridge" Boston Herald, February 18, 2008 - "Hub hiker escapes death" New Hampshire Public Radio - "Author Ty Gagne on The Last Traverse: Tragedy and Resilience in the Winter Whites," December 31, 2020 Union Leader, November 29, 2020 - "A tale of life and death on Franconia Ridge" Conway Daily Sun, January 17, 2021 - "The Last Traverse chronicles wintry search-and-rescue mission" SkinnyMoose.com, February 12, 2008 - "Missing Hikers Found In Franconia Notch – One Dead" WhiteBlaze.net forum discussion, February 2008 VFTT (Views From The Top) forum, September 14, 2008 - "James Osborne & Fred Fredrickson Follow-up Story" Boston Globe, December 23, 2024 - "White Mountains, New Hampshire search and rescue data" Mount Washington Observatory weather archives NH Fish and Game Department rescue reports Nashua Telegraph, September 14, 2008 Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Your weekly report from Abobolandia is here, it's hot, and it's served up fresh with a heavy dollop of snark. The attacks on the abortion pill mifepristone continue. HHS just said pharmacies don't have to stock abortion pills anymore. Cool cool cool. Totally normal functioning democracy stuff.Meanwhile, manufacturers of the pill are gearing up to fight what could become a national telehealth abortion ban, and for once we're actually rooting for Big Pharma. We won't make it a thing, we promise. GUEST ROLL CALL:Moji and Lizz sit down with Amy Hagstrom Miller, President & CEO of Whole Woman's Health, who is providing telehealth abortion care in 10 states while the federal government plays regulatory roulette with people's bodies. Independent clinics still provide the majority of abortion care in this country. Yes, indie clinics, not hospital systems, not corporations, and they are being squeezed from every direction. Then musician and activist Gwen Levey pulls up to talk to Moji about using her voice loudly in a moment when silence is complicity, and especially as the DOJ refuses to meaningfully pursue accountability for the victims of Jeffrey Epstein. Her video, “Barefoot & Pregnant,” recently went viral for highlighting the atrocities of Project 2026. Institutions bending over backwards for predators and cracking down on bodily autonomy is all part of their plan. But never, fear! Send a textHello you beautiful souls, So much information has been coming to the surface lately, and for many of us it's unsettling, overwhelming, and honestly… anger-inducing. When we're constantly exposed to stories of corruption, harm, and darkness, it's easy to slip into fear — and fear is exactly how control is maintained. In this episode, I talk about spiritual warfare in a grounded, conscious way — not to create panic, but to create clarity and strength. We explore why fear and division are being pushed so heavily right now, why it's completely human to feel angry, and how reacting from that place only drains our energy and power. The real way we fight back isn't through hatred or violence — it's through inner work, self-belief, discernment, and faith. When we heal ourselves, trust ourselves, and stay connected to God and truth, we become harder to manipulate and easier to lead by example. This is about reclaiming your power, protecting your energy, and choosing empowerment over fear. We are not meant to live as sheep — passive, afraid, and disconnected. We are meant to be lions: awake, grounded, heart-led, and strong in the light.Good will always win — especially when we refuse to give our power away. All my love,Hannah xoxoSupport the showThank you for listening. Judges' Secretary, Andiswa Mengo's lawyers are gearing up to make submissions to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) on the Judicial Conduct Tribunal Report outcome against Judge President Selby Mbenenge, which they charge "romanticises sexual harassment in the workplace". This, after the Tribunal Report recommended a lesser sanction of misconduct against the Eastern Cape's top judge, which effectively saves him from possible impeachment. The report is now in the hands of the JSC -- who hold the final cards on whether they will uphold the recommendation or reach a different conclusion. Canny Maphanga filed this report

In a Minnesota town outside the Twin Cities, Emily is a nurse who treats many immigrant patients. She can't locate a patient who just had a test result that shows they might have cancer. The patient was recently detained by ICE; situations like these have forced the clinic to adapt, making house calls and triaging care.“I'd love to know how well somebody's kidneys are functioning today,” Emily said, but “I'm gonna wait till three months because I don't want them to come in for a lab appointment that's not critical.”Emily is one of many Minnesotans mounting a quiet, secretive resistance to the Trump administration's hard-nosed and often violent immigration agenda. Across the state, neighbors are helping neighbors and communities are building grassroot systems to support immigrant families. This week on Reveal, our Minnesotan reporters Nate Halverson and Artis Curiskis report on how Minnesota is teaching the country to resist federal agents who have arrested children, killed citizens in the street, and pepper-sprayed high schoolers. Gav has had plenty to say on the pod about the declining quality of ballsy music journalism in the UK with talented scribes being reduced to hired hacks, used for the whims and wants of overbearing PR agencies, record labels and the bands and they represent. Data is the resource, and our lives are the territory. Ulises Mejias, co-author of Data Grab: The New Colonialism of Big Tech and How to Fight Back, reflects on data colonialism as a new social order that extends the extractive logic of historical colonialism into our everyday lives. Highlights include: How terms of digital service agreements, written in dense legalese, resemble past colonial proclamations to indigenous people intended to dispossess; How data colonialism, a system of continuous data extraction from our everyday lives, mirrors traditional colonialism in that both generate wealth for the few and enable new forms of social and behavioral control; Why colonialism was essential for the development of capitalism and remains central in understanding today's data-driven capitalism; How data colonialism uses the 4 X's of traditional colonialism - explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate - to move into new 'data territories' like education, health, agriculture, policing, and war; How both traditional and data colonialism use 'civilizing narratives' to justify their extraction and colonize peoples' minds; How AI amplifies the worst of bureaucratic proceduralism and the costs fall on the least powerful in society; What resistance to data colonialism can learn from resistance to traditional colonialism: working within the system, against the system, and beyond the system. The podcast explores needed narrative, behavioral, and system shifts for recreating human life in balance with all life on Earth. With expert guests from wide-ranging disciplines, we examine the forces underlying overshoot: from patriarchal pronatalism that is fueling overpopulation, to growth-biased economic systems that lead to consumerism and social injustice, to the dominant worldview of human supremacy that subjugates animals and nature. Our vision of shrinking toward abundance inspires us to seek pathways of transformation that go beyond technological fixes toward a new humanity that honors our interconnectedness with all beings. Donald Trump has abruptly backed down over the US takeover of Greenland. From the icy streets of Nuuk our correspondent James Rothwell reports from the centre of an unusual geopolitical spotlight as Greenlanders try to make sense of their island's sudden importance and the anxiety of being discussed by faraway powers.Greenland itself emerges not as a prize but as a place with its own history identity and quiet resilience. James paints a picture of a small Arctic capital balancing fishing tourism and everyday life while navigating long memories of colonial rule and new questions about sovereignty security and self determination.Back in the studio Venetia and Roland are joined by Chief Foreign Commentator David Blair to unpack what Trump's partial retreat really means and to explore the wider implications of Mark Carney's striking Davos speech. Carney argues we are living through a rupture not a transition and urges middle powers to face reality and work together in a world where power politics is once again shaping events.Read James Rothwell's Greenland dispatch: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/authors/j/ja-je/james-rothwell/Read David Blair's analysis of the Greenland deal: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2026/01/22/predicted-greenland-deal-not-good-one/Read Roland Oliphant on Trump's Board of Peace: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2026/01/22/monarchs-and-pariahs-join-trumps-board-of-peace-parade/Producer: Peter ShevlinExecutive Producer: Louisa Wells► Sign up to our most popular newsletter, From the Editor. Then they look at Hilton's latest strategic move with the launch of Apartment Collection by Hilton, its 26th brand targeting furnished apartment-style stays, a direct challenge to the traditional STR category through a major hospitality player. The team also dives into the Kasa acquisition of Mint House and what that signals about consolidation and operational scale in urban rental-style lodging. Finally, they break down Airbnb's efforts to build a hotel-focused team. A more direct sign that the company is trying to compete more directly with OTAs and traditional lodging channels. We're seeing the same far-right media consolidation in America as during Putin's rise to power. Bari Weiss is the new Roger Ailes, hired to destroy CBS News. The far-right Ellisons are aggressively going after Warner Bros. to build a media monopoly to dumb down more Americans so that we're easier to control. That's why Andrea spoke at Courier News' Courage & Cowardice event in Washington, DC on December 11. Courier, the team that built the searchable Epstein files database released by Congress, brought together independent journalists and creators who still believe journalism is a public good. The main focus of the conversation, which you can listen to here on Gaslit Nation, was how to build and sustain independent media. Andrea was joined by progressive YouTuber Jack Cocchiarella, Brian Beutler, formerly of Crooked Media and The New Republic who now runs Off Message; TikTok comedian Meredith Lynch; and in a discussion moderated by veteran editor Mark Jacob, formerly of the Chicago Tribune, to talk about media capitulation and how to fight back. Here's some info on the event. Luckily, the Media and Democracy Project (MAD) exists and provided us with the following actions you can take: Make videos highlighting moments of real accountability like celebrating the ABC reporter Mary Bruce who pressed MBS and Trump with tough, substantive questions. Credit your sources clearly and encourage your audience to click through and read the original reporting. Introduce your audience to journalism and media-education initiatives such as States Newsroom, the News Literacy Project, and Rebuild Local News. Synthesize and share this essential explainer from Democracy Forward on the link between local news and democracy: https://democracyfund.org/idea/new-research-explores-connection-between-democracy-and-local-news/ If you're a journalist, whether independent or in a newsroom, regularly lift up the work of your colleagues. Everyone should keep the conversation of journalism being the bedrock of a democracy front and center. Use your time online wisely: repost, share stories, and boost public-interest journalism whenever you can. Most importantly, stay connected with MAD.
