This week, we're scratching The Itch to rebel! AI art is trash, and you shouldn't use it. But if you put on a show as fun as this year's Pointfest, we'll forgive you. Mostly. The whole team made it to see 311 headline a lineup that also featured The Urge, Toadies, Finger Eleven, Sick Puppies, Alien Ant Farm, and our boys Oxymorrons and Tree One Four! Hear about the bands who impressed, The Point's second faux pas, and what legendary collaboration we finally got to see live! Plus, Aaron watches Josh Katz of Badflower try to burp, and KC and Dan celebrate Maynard James Keenan's 61st birthday by politely enduring Puscifer to get to Primus and A Perfect Circle! Enjoy. If you like what you hear, you can hear more of us every Sunday night broadcasting rock to the masses from 6-9pm CST on KCLC-FM. Over the past decade, it's been the band Badflower to take a torch once carried by bands like My Chemical Romance and carry it into the realms of modern rock. Lead singer Josh Katz wears his heart on his sleeve with lyrics that resonate with anyone, no matter what they might be going through. That has never been more evident than on their latest single, "Paws," all about the possibility of losing his dog and best friend. That song, along with the previous single "Detroit," will be on Badflower's third full-length album, There Is No Place Like Home, due out on June 20th. Josh and I have had some deep conversations in the past, and has their manager reminded me, "you two gab like two old Grandmas," well, this conversation gets into some real-life stuff.

Sometimes I feel like I crave the joy and craziness of a Badflower conversation and this one starts with a surprise appearance by my daughter and I almost get kicked off the conversation. Then it's all in on new Badflower music, skateboards, and riding tractors on a farm on the outskirts of Nashville. Badflower is something to behold and with two brand new songs out it's time to have this conversation with lead singer Josh Katz and bassist Alex Espiritu.
Badflower's Josh Katz and Alex Espiritu celebrate the release of their new song, "Detroit," and admit it tells the band's story of achieving success and not being totally satisfied.

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for June 26, 2024 is: zero-sum ZEER-oh-SUM adjective Zero-sum describes something, such as a game, mentality, or situation, in which any gain corresponds directly with an equivalent loss. // Dividing up the budget is a zero-sum game. See the entry > Examples: “Domestic migration is zero-sum, meaning a loss of college graduates prized by local officials and tax collectors in Washington or San Francisco can be a gain for Kansas City or Orlando.” — Josh Katz, The New York Times, 15 May 2023 Did you know? Does game theory sound like fun? It can be—if you are a mathematician or economist who needs to analyze a competitive situation in which the outcome is determined by the choices of the players and chance. Game theory was introduced by mathematician John von Neumann and economist Oskar Morgenstern in their 1944 book The Theory of Games and Economic Behavior. In game theory, a zero-sum game is one, such as chess or checkers, where each player has a clear purpose that is completely opposed to that of the opponent. In economics, a situation is zero-sum if the gains of one party are exactly balanced by the losses of another and no net gain or loss is created; however, such situations in real life are rare.
How much do you know about New York City's 1982 Loft Law, which established a process for artists to obtain legal occupancy of the raw industrial spaces they inhabited, while also providing rent stabilization and protection from future eviction? Or the pigeon fanciers who were once a fixture across the rooftops of Brooklyn and remain valued as neighborhood sentinels? If these poetic vestiges from Gotham's storied past have you dreaming about the good old days, then you won't want to miss our podcast with gen-Z New Yorkers (and good buddies) Joshua Charow and Josh Katz. Their ambitious, self-assigned photo projects explore rarified mini-worlds featuring magical artist spaces and exuding West Side Story vibes. While their respective explorations occupy opposite ends of the struggle for prized urban space, the insights they share when discussing both their working methods and their paths to publishing are instructive and inspirational. What's more, their spirited camaraderie in conversation is infectious! As Charow aptly notes toward the end of the episode, “I have to say, I don't know if this book would exist without Josh Katz. Because I started this project towards the end of him finishing his, and as a close friend, he was able to basically show me the roadmap of how you get from idea to a finished book. And like he said, it's really hard to understand how that works without someone in your life who can show you the steps you have to take.” And for bonus points, listen up to discover the former guest of the show who also sat down with Charow, and ultimately lined him up with a book agent! Attention all music fans! This podcast is for you. If you could think of one area in the music industry that has remained totally stagnant amidst all the technology and evolution, what would it be? For those of you that said ticketing, you're exactly right! Now, for those of you wondering what revolutionizing the ticketing industry has to do with payments, I have YellowHeart CEO and Founder Josh Katz here to tell you. YellowHeart is a Web3 based digital ticketing platform with a mission to evolve live event ticketing for the first time in history! And where does it all start? With the payment, of course! In Josh's model, the payment is actually the point of engagement that allows for a ticketing experience that far exceeds the traditional industry standard. Before YellowHeart, the ticketing experience consisted of a barcode or proof of entry stub that told you your seat, location, and basic event information. Now, with YellowHeart, ticketing is a full-on engagement tool for fandom. In fact, the payment process unlocks a plethora of perks available for purchasers. This includes everything from the capacity to receive messages from fans, digital content, high-end art, coveted vinyls and a slew of other interactive engagement tools. Before YellowHeart, the ticket would die immediately after the point of entry. Now, just the point of purchase brings (and keeps) it alive! Tune in this week to hear Josh talk about his journey to CEO, including why you have him to think for good music in public places like restaurants, offices, and coffee shops (just to name a few). We also talk about where the industry is going in the next 2 to 3 years as it relates to bitcoin, Blockchain, and Web3 technology.
For our final episode of the year, we're discussing the luxury side of Realty ONE Group...ONE LUXE. We sat down with Taylor Christensen, Senior Director of Partners, to learn a little more and see how agents can considerably expand their business by breaking into the luxury market.

Raise yourself up by your own bootstraps. This is a refrain we hear all the time, especially as Americans catechized in the dogma of personal responsibility. But what if some people don't have bootstraps? What if some don't even have boots? This week David and Curtis welcome educational expert and Rice University sociology professor Ruth López Turley. Raised on the U.S./Mexico border, Ruth's own educational story is fascinating and lends special weight to her observations about educational equity and how the scriptures (including Mary's Magnificat) might lead us to some surprising and challenging conclusions.Show Notes:-$50M Kinder Foundation grant will expand Kinder Institute's work to solve challenges facing Houston-Claire Cain Miller, Josh Katz, Francesca Paris and Aatish Bhatia (The New York Times) - Vast New Study Shows a Key to Reducing Poverty: More Friendships Between Rich and Poor-Cynthia M.
