An Anglo-American Way of Troublemaking: The Fierce, Unruly Life of Jessica Mitford

Jessica was the good Mitford sister. The English aristocrat who fought against fascism in the Spanish Civil War, then came to America and dedicated her life to social justice. According to her biographer Carla Kaplan, Mitford had the fierce, unruly life of a great muckraker. She was a Troublemaker in the best sense of the word. Unlike prudes like Upton Sinclair or Ralph Nader, she was hysterically funny—her voice as distinctive as Jane Austen's or Virginia Woolf's. She understood that bullies are driven by insecurity and paranoia, and she knew exactly how to punch them in the nose with her sharp upper-class English humor. So where are you now, Jessica Mitford? When the left desperately requires a good dose of humor and the right needs to be laughed at?Keen On America is a reader-supported publication. Every so often, the sisters return In the 1930s, an aristocratic family in the U.K. became the subject of society pages because of its six sisters, who followed widely divergent paths. The Mitford sisters were Nancy, Pam, Diana, Unity, Jessica ("Decca") and Deborah ("Debo"). Among them, Nancy became a bestselling novelist (Love in a Cold Climate); Diana married a British fascist leader; Unity moved to Germany and became close friends with Hitler; Deborah, the Duchess of Devonshire, presided over a country estate; and Jessica relocated to the U.S., joined the Communist Party and became an accomplished journalist (The American Way of Death). Two new books examine the lives of the Mitford sisters, and both authors will be at the Desmond-Fish Public Library in Garrison on Dec. 13. Carla Kaplan is the author of Troublemaker: The Fierce, Unruly Life of Jessica Mitford, and Mimi Pond wrote and illustrated Do Admit! The Mitford Sisters and Me. They will be joined by Constancia "Dinky" Romilly, 84, Decca's daughter, who lives in Philipstown. Her father, Esmond Romilly - a nephew of Winston Churchill - was killed during World War II, and she was raised in Oakland, California, by her mother and stepfather, Robert Treuhaft. "Every 20 years, there's a Mitford boom," Dinky says. "The new generation is finding out about this pretty remarkable family. My attitude about what was remarkable about my parents was completely different from Swinbrook [the Mitford home in England], and the whole growing up isolated in the country and the fascist sisters." She points out that she was never a Mitford. "I didn't grow up in a Mitford household," she says. "My mother wasn't a recognized personality [as a writer] until after I left to go to college. I grew up in the Treuhaft household; I was Dinky Treuhaft." Along with The American Way of Death (1963), an exposé of abuses in the funeral industry, Decca was known for Hons and Rebels (1960), a memoir of her eccentric upbringing. After moving to California, she became a political activist; her husband was a civil rights lawyer. Dinky says that, as a child and teenager, "I knew that there was this weird family over there [in England] that had titles - the honorable this and the lord that. But when I was growing up, we lived in a lower-middle-class neighborhood in Oakland. My parents didn't have much money. My life was going to school and taking care of my brothers after school." Of the recurring Mitford mania, Dinky says that, "in the past, I have not liked it. It has been annoying to be constantly badgered." But she says she is pleased with the two new books. Troublemaker follows Decca from her country girlhood to her life as an American communist and later journalist dubbed "queen of the muckrakers" by Time. Do Admit! is a graphic memoir that follows author Pond's girlhood obsession with the family's blue-blood lifestyle. "It's exciting to see books coming out that cover all of my mother's life, starting as a Mitford, then her life as a Treuhaft, and then a Mitford again," Dinky says. "The books are both deeply researched. You know, you don't research your own mother. You just grow up with that mother, and then, after you leave home, you watch. My mother was an activist until the day she died. I learned and relearned a lot of things from both books." Kaplan's book focuses on Jessica Mitford "as a person who very consciously changed from an aristocrat, a person of privilege, to a worker in the movements of her time, to a radical activist," says Dinky. It documents "the change in this woman and how she negotiated it, and how that fit in with the history of the period." Pond's book is about the six sisters, "how they developed, how they grew, what their relationships were among each other," Dinky says. "Another good reason to read Mimi's book is that it's clear that my mother was her favorite!" A third book will be available at the event: a newly released paperback edition of Decca's edited letters, of w...

The Limits of the American Way of AI

In the last few years, artificial intelligence has become a central focus of geopolitical competition, and especially of U.S.-Chinese rivalry. For much of that time, the United States, or at least U.S. companies, seemed to have the advantage. But Ben Buchanan, a leading scholar of technology who crafted the Biden administration's AI strategy, worries that the United States' AI superiority isn't nearly as assured as many have assumed. In an essay in the November/December issue of Foreign Affairs, Buchanan, writing with Tantum Collins, warns that “the American way of developing AI is reaching its limits,” and as those limits become clear, “they will start to erode—and perhaps even end—U.S. dominance.” The essay calls for a new grand bargain between tech and the U.S. government—a bargain necessary to advancing American AI and to ensuring that it enhances, rather than undermines, U.S. national security. Dan Kurtz-Phelan spoke to Buchanan about the future of AI competition and how it could reshape not just American power but global order itself. Send us a textIn this follow-up to our 2021 episode on Nancy Mitford, we're turning the spotlight on her younger sister, Jessica (a.k.a. “Decca”) Mitford, an activist and journalist whom Time magazine called “the queen of the muckrakers.” Her influential 1963 nonfiction title The American Way of Death exposed corruption in the funeral industry and was lauded by David Bowie as one of his “Top 100” favorite books, whereas her 1960 childhood memoir, Hons and Rebels, left her own family seeing red! Joining us in conversation is Mimi Pond, whose recently-published graphic biography Do Admit: The Mitford Sisters and Me adds new color (literally) to the Mitford mythology with wry commentary and artwork perfectly suited to England's most outrageous debutantes.Mentioned in this episode:Do Admit: The Mitford Sisters and Me by Mimi PondHons and Rebels by Jessica MitfordThe American Way of Death by Jessica MitfordDavid Bowie's Top 100 Favorite BooksThe Pursuit of Love by Nancy MitfordLife in A Cold Climate by Laura ThompsonDecca: The Letters of Jessica Mitford edited by Peter Y. This episode explores James Ellman's book "Seeds of Victory: Defeat, Triumph, and the American Way of War" with host Jeff Sikkenga from the Ashbrook Center. This military strategy documentary examines how US war tactics follow a consistent pattern: initial strategic defeats followed by rapid adaptation and ultimate victory. From Washington's military disasters in New York (1776) to early setbacks in Korea, American military history shows eight major strategic defeats between 1776-1951, yet US forces recovered each time through superior industrial mobilization, quick military leadership changes, and technological innovation. The discussion challenges popular narratives about American military effectiveness, arguing that conflicts like Vietnam were battles within the broader Cold War victory. This military history analysis emphasizes that warfare has shaped America as much as democracy itself, with military service being the most reliable path to the presidency. The conversation covers America's unique ability to promote effective generals rapidly, mobilize industrial capacity for war, and maintain public support through prolonged military conflicts, while raising concerns about future warfare where traditional American military advantages may be threatened by emerging technologies like drone warfare and modern military tactics.Host: Jeff SikkengaExecutive Producer: Jeremy GyptonSubscribe: https://linktr.ee/theamericanidea

The Death of the American Way of Work: How the United States Lost Its Grip on the Future

Keen On Democracy

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 24, 2025 32:53

In 1963, Jessica Mitford published her remarkable account of the American funeral industry, An American Way of Death. Over sixty years later, another distinguished Englishwoman, the workplace futurist Julia Hobsbawm, is announcing the death of the American way of work. Whereas Mitford exposed the predatory practices of funeral directors, Hobsbawn reveals how corporate America has become equally disconnected from reality—clinging to outdated workplace models while other nations innovate. From Thomas Edison's countless inventions to Henry Ford's revolutionary assembly line, Hobsbawm notes, America dominated innovative 20th century work practices. But as countries like the UAE introduce more flexible policies than Silicon Valley, and demographic shifts reshape global labor markets, American corporations are "sleepwalking into disaster” by failing to adapt to both generational changes and to the post-pandemic workplace revolution. 1. America's Century of Workplace Dominance Is Ending"I've always thought that America has dominated a century of the way the world works. I mean, everything we live and work on from, you know, the computer or the credit card or the communications industry, the car, it's all been American."Hobsbawm argues that while America invented modern work culture—from Edison's innovations to Ford's assembly lines—its grip on workplace leadership is slipping as other nations pioneer new approaches.2. Corporate America Is in Denial About Post-Pandemic Reality"There is a desire on behalf of boards, corporate leaders, large corporates to, quote unquote, go back, to be quite rosy tinted in their spectacle view of what the past of work looked like."She warns that American executives are refusing to acknowledge how fundamentally the pandemic changed worker expectations, instead clinging to outdated models while demanding returns to traditional office structures.3. Other Countries Are Now Leading Workplace Innovation"On the 1st of April this year the UAE introduced pretty much the most flexible working policies anywhere in the world, outside of the Nordics and the UK... America is weaker in the culture of work and the workplace policies around flexibility."Nations once considered less progressive are now outpacing Silicon Valley on workplace flexibility, while American companies retreat from forward-thinking policies.4. The One-Size-Fits-All Model Is Dead"There is now a complete disaggregation of what norm is. And that is what is so difficult for businesses and corporations... you cannot impose a one-size-fits-all."Hobsbawm identifies this as "the Achilles heel of the American way of work"—the inability to adapt to diverse, individualized worker needs across different generations and cultures.5. Work Change Is the Defining Challenge of Our Time"Work change is the new climate change. Every single workplace, every single worker, every single workforce, every single city product is going to be changed continuously."She positions workplace transformation as the most critical issue facing society, requiring the same urgency and comprehensive response as climate change. Overthrowing Family Law - MTP460

Co-Host Judith Kaluzny (https://mountaintoppodcast.com/judith) Plenty of us as men have not only had our run-ins with what's commonly known as the family law system, we feel as if we've been thoroughly shafted by it. Well, my guest is a retired divorce lawyer and mediator who is out to overthrow the family law system as we know it. Judith Kaluzny is the author of two books, Marriage License Handbook: Rules Of The Road For Getting Married and her upcoming one The American Way of Divorce: A Fraud on Families. Basically, Judith says we need to quit the systems designed with an adversary process as the default, and start over with a mediation system. She says that's because the divorce industry profits at the expense of the wife, husband and especially the children. The costs are financial, emotional and, for young children, developmental. So then, what are the pros and cons of mediating a divorce vs. litigating? What should marital property rules be? Should there be a marriage contract, like we see routinely in business? How does domestic violence factor in? As far as children go, Judith has seven (!) and believes strongly in 'parenting plans' instead of custody battles. What should a relational agreement with a woman look like? And finally, what I think is the centerpiece of her overall position, her argument for post-nuptial agreements rather than simply pre-nups. And without that truth, there can be no such thing as justice. Justice is seeking to give everyone what is due. But how can we know what people are due without knowing the truth about our history and what happened?
