Why the Book of Revelation Matters Let's be honest... The book of Revelation is weird. It's hard. There are things that make you go "huh?" And many Christians (perhaps most) just avoid it because of that. But Revelation is incredibly powerful! And though we may struggle to figure all of it out, the overall message and purpose is quite clear. In this episode of the Bible in Life podcast we explore who Revelation is for and what it is seeking to accomplish. In short, we answer the question, Why does Revelation matter? A powerful message doesn't just inspire, it transforms. When God's word speaks, it calls for action, asking us to leave old ways behind and walk in newness of life.

Loving Jesus and Keeping His Commands | John 14:18-21 Jesus says, "If you love me, you will keep my commandments." So what does that mean when we fail to keep his commands? What about someone who loves Jesus and desires to remain in Him, but doesn't always keep His commands? Do that person actually love Jesus? In this episode of the Bible in Life podcast, we explore the relationship between loving Jesus, obedience, and God's grace. Like BELT-TA-SHAZ-ARE, we can have that same attitude. We can forget who we are and where we came from. We can forget the lessons that we've learned from the elders in our lives. Pastor Richard will remind you today to LISTEN to your elders and HEED their warnings. They haven't lived the years they have without gaining some understanding that you don't have.
Cultivating Virtue There are two main components to growing in Christlikeness - putting off vice and putting on virtue. You see this all throughout the New Testament. For example, Colossians 3:5-9 concerns behaviors to be eliminated and 3:12-17 lists virtues to cultivate. You find this same pattern all throughout the New Testament. And in every place, we have are called to act. In other words, cultivating virtue doesn't happen on accident. It requires intentional effort, albeit effort enabled by God's grace through the Spirit. In this episode of the Bible in Life podcast we consider some of the things we can do to cultivate specific virtues. Letting the Bible Shape our Parenting In this episode I share two big truths about kids from the Bible that shapes the way we relate to our kids and parent our kids. Proverbs 22:15 Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; The rod of discipline will remove it far from him. Mark 10:13-16 13 And they were bringing children to Him so that He would touch them; but the disciples rebuked them. 14 But when Jesus saw this, He was indignant and said to them, “Allow the children to come to Me; do not forbid them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 15 Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it at all.” 16 And He took them in His arms and began blessing them, laying His hands on them. The Setting Trick: Conversations with World Class Bridge Players
I'm thrilled to welcome Antonio Palma from Portugal to the show today. Antonio has had an incredible run of second-place finishes in recent years, including the Rosenblum, European Mixed Championships, Soloway Knockouts, and Spingold. Last year, he broke through by winning the pairs in Madeira, leading Sjoert Brink to call him the best matchpoint player in the world, and then claiming the Club de Compiastre trophy at the South American Championships. But the real celebration came recently when he finally won the Reisinger at the Fall NABC, ending that streak of seven consecutive finals losses. It was a relief, Antonio says. In our conversation, Antonio opens up about what those years of finishing second felt like, the moment he realized he'd won the Reisinger (he wasn't even playing the final set!), and his journey from professional poker player to bridge champion. We discuss how poker shaped his approach to pressure moments and reading cards, why defense is his favorite part of the game, his challenges with tilting at the table, and the soon to be legendary hand where he took 23 minutes to defend two hearts and made Bobby Levin want to quit bridge. This was a particularly enjoyable conversation with one of bridge's rising stars. ___________________________________________________________________ Key Highlights:

On December 20th, President Trump's Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard issued a powerful warning to the AmFest audience. She declared that Islam's sharia-supremacist ideology, which she called “Islamism,” is “the greatest near and long-term threat to our freedom and security.” Director Gabbard's warning could hardly be more timely as the President will imminently act on recommendations by the Secretaries of State and Treasury about whether, and to what extent, he should ban the world's preeminent champion of that toxic ideology – namely, the Muslim Brotherhood. The Brotherhood's most important enablers, Qatar and Turkey, clearly oppose any such sanctions. But the evidence that it is a foreign terrorist organization and its toxic “political ideology” seeks our nation's destruction cannot be ignored, let alone given a pass. Take action now by calling on President Trump to ban the Brotherhood at BantheBrotherhood.org. This is Frank Gaffney.

What does it mean to be "God fearing"? It used to be common to describe someone who was particularly devout as "God fearing," but that phrase is rarely used any more. But the Bible does call God's people to fear the Lord and promises good blessings for those who are God fearing. So what does it mean to fear God in the Bible? The Kingdom of God and the Gospel Why does Jesus say that he preaches the gospel of the kingdom of God? The way the gospel is talked about by Christians today usually has little if anything to do with the kingdom of God. Usually Christians describe the gospel as being about Jesus' death and resurrection and how people can be saved. So what exactly is the gospel and how does it relate to the kingdom of God? Note: this episode comes about in answer to a question sent in by a faithful listener. How is God going to work out his plans if humans are so disloyal to Him even though they have the Holy Spirit? I saw this question recently: It doesn't seem as if God's plans are working out too well. Humans are loyal to him; only Jesus has been. The Holy Spirit doesn't seem to be making much of a difference. So how is God going to have loyal human partners and work out his plans? But this question misunderstands the entire storyline of the Bible. It fails to understand that "In hope we are saved" (Romans 8:24). If you look around and you study the Bible, you will recognize that we are undoubtedly in a place where we are rapidly approaching the end times. God gives us everything we need to understand how we should be living in these last days. The warning that you are about to hear from Psalm 37 verses 1 through 9 may be the most critical of them all.

Wonder doesn't vanish—we just forget how to see it. In this conversation, master naturalist and author Eryn Lynum shows how kids can reboot ours: inviting us to become “collectors of sunrises,” to trade a single scrolling hour for sky, creek, and trail, and even to bring the wild indoors with bird feeders, houseplants, and the surprisingly magical fish tank. She explains why nature imprints our memories so intensely—through scent, sound, and touch—and how a simple ritual like a “quiet hike” helps families slow down enough to notice flickers' wingbeats, rabbits in the brush, and those blink-and-you-miss-it moments kids beg us to see. Time, it turns out, is the real terrain. Before the light bulb, people slept about eleven hours; today we try to stretch each day past its natural rhythm while children spend an estimated 22% of childhood on devices—roughly 205 waking weeks—compared to just 4.5 weeks outside. Eryn offers a hopeful reset: treat screens like invasive plants, remove a little each day, and let outdoor hours compound—because one hour outside makes the next one easier, richer, and more alive. Heed the invitations (“Come see this!”), lose track of the clock together, and watch your family's curiosity—and capacity for rest—grow. Glass half full, Bill Belichick - at least now you know she's not into you for your coaching. Must be your rugged good looks. What we all already knew before last weekend even kicked off - there are only four or maybe five of those teams with an actual chance of winning the national championship. College football's great.. except for the end part, when the elites head behind the velvet ropes into the vip area and everybody else gets to fight over Poptart and Mayo bowls. What's the biggest surprise in the last half century in college football? BYU in '84, Howard Schnellenberger & Bernie Kosar beating Nebraska in the '84 Orange Bowl. And... that's it. Compare that with the NFL - where the unimaginable is the norm, and I don't just mean the Dallas Cowboys trading their best player to their rival since the days of the ice bowl. The Micah Parsons deal wasn't so much unimaginable as it was un-smart. For all our collective focus on pro football, there are still things that no one sees coming. I was thinking about how often the NFL's turned me into Vince Lombardi, asking what the hell I'm looking at. The biggest surprises of the last 60 yrs of the super bowl era are that the three best QBs of the super bowl era are a six round draft pick, a 3rd round draft pick from Pennsylvania named Montana, and a QB who was drafted behind Mitchell Trubisky. The O.G. Of improbability is of course the Jets beating the Colts in super bowl 3. Broadway Joe may have shared his bed with half the women of Manhattan, but it was unimaginable anyone from the AFL could get to first base with the Lombardi. To be accurate, the trophy wasn't named the Lombardi til 1970, after Namath had won it. But then again, if the Cowboys had survived the Ice Bowl in ‘67 then won the second super bowl, that trophy might now be called the Landry. Imagine that. We've got Mike Ryan Ruiz from the Dan LeBatard Show on today along with Dan Hanzus from Heed the Call.
