Pastor Chad's sermon emphasized that the Christian life, from beginning to end, depends on the Holy Spirit rather than human effort. Using Galatians 5, Pastor Chad taught that believers are saved, sustained, transformed, and assured of their relationship with God through the Holy Spirit. He contrasted two ineffective approaches to life with God—religious self-righteousness and rebellious self-indulgence—explaining that both ultimately rely on self instead of God. True spiritual growth does not come from trying harder to overcome sin but from continually walking with the Holy Spirit, allowing Him to produce His fruit—love, joy, peace, patience, and self-control—in our lives. Pastor Chad concluded that lasting transformation happens through a daily relationship with God, as the Holy Spirit gradually shapes believers into the image of Christ.
Set Your Mind on the Things of the Spirit | Life in the Spirit, pt. 6 One of the keys to life in the Spirit is what we allow to fill and occupy our minds. The apostle Paul writes, "For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace, because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so, and those who are in the flesh cannot please God." Praying in the Spirit | Life in the Spirit, pt. 5 How does the Holy Spirit help us pray? What does it mean to pray in the Spirit? Ephesians 6:18 "With every prayer and request, pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be alert with all perseverance and every request for all the saints" Romans 8:26-27 Now in the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know what to pray for as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. Be Filled with the Spirit | Life in the Spirit, pt. 4 Ephesians 5:15-18 says, "15 So then, be careful how you walk, not as unwise people but as wise, 16 making the most of your time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not get drunk with wine, in which there is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit" As we continue our series on "Life in the Spirit," in this episode of the Bible in Life podcast we reflect on what it means to be "filled with the Spirit." When you think of God, what pictures come to mind? The world tries to portray God as some vindictive dictator obsessed with enforcing a set of rules. Do you think of Him as a strict rule giver, and someone who's out to get you? Pastor Jeff will encourage us to think of God as our Abba Daddy, who loves us, and wants to lead and guide us! We're camping out in Romans chapter eight today and all week long. Each and every day we have a choice to make as followers of Christ. And that is will we walk in the flesh or in the Spirit. One leads to corruption and defeat, and the other to victory and blessings. Seems like a no brainer, and yet we so often choose the wrong path. We are called to live by the Spirit so we can overcome the desires of our sinful nature. But how do we do that?In this message, Jill helps us understand what it means to live by the Spirit by examining the "fruits of the flesh" and then looking at the first three fruits of the Spirit: love, joy, and peace. We tend to complicate things that are meant to be simple, sometimes to the point where the point we are trying to make becomes so convoluted that no one understands what we are trying to convey. The simple point of the passage before us is that if you are in Christ by faith, the Holy Spirit dwells in you to lead and empower you to live in a manner pleasing to Him. If you are not in Christ there is nothing you can do that is pleasing to Him and all your righteous deeds are "filthy rags" in that regard. What does it mean to "walk in the Spirit" vs "walk in the flesh"? What are the consequences of each? 1: In the Flesh a: The Mindset b: The Walk c: The Ultimate Consequence 2: In the Spirit a: The Mindset b: The Walk c: The Ultimate Consequence
