In her message “What's Love Got to Do with It?”, Pastor Jen addresses the skepticism and pain many feel regarding love, using Tina Turner's iconic anthem as a starting point. She explores the contrast between the “second-hand emotion” described in pop culture and the “first-hand experience” of God's love found in Psalm 116. The Human […]
This week, I'm joined again by emotional eating expert Tricia Nelson. This time, we explore the intricate connection between emotional eating and romantic relationships. We talk about how emotional responsibility includes becoming aware of the ways food struggles can impact intimacy and communication in relationships. We also discuss how isolation can intensify emotional eating, why connection and honesty are essential to healing, and the underlying reasons food becomes a coping mechanism. Tricia shares practical ways she has helped people shift these deep-rooted patterns, including how processing, expressing, and communicating how we're feeling is essential to changing compulsive eating behaviors. It's an honest conversation about how long-term struggles with food can affect the people in our lives, with practical advice for how to feel and connect with others instead of numb and avoid with food. If we are talking about the feeling and emotion of love, it does have something to do with marriage and family. However, the action and essence of all that love is, has way more to do with our intimate relationships than the feeling of love! Emotions and feelings are ever changing, but true love weathers the emotions and continues to act out of love whether the feeling is present or not. Join Eric and Gena in this episode as they discuss the God kind of love that takes home life to another level!
What has love got to do with it? Love and compassion is what drives most people to a spiritual path, but it is in fact more advanced. If you look at the Lamrim, the packaging of Buddha's teachings, they're in a nice orderly way, according to the capacity of the disciple. I prefer to call it - junior school, high school, and university. Love and compassion are taught in university. That's a big surprise to us. There's the wisdom wing and the compassion wing, a bird needs two wings. The wisdom wing, which is all about you, is like self compassion, self love. Buddha doesn't talk like that, but it's how we talk in the west, it's how you take care of yourself. So of course if you hear about self love, you hear about having a relax and a nice massage, you can do that too, but that's not Buddha's approach. If you don't start working on your mind, then you can never change, you'll never get happy. The Buddha's first teachings - the four noble truths - he's telling us exactly what to do if we want to be happy. Guess what! - it's not to get someone else to make us happy, or to get the nice cake or vacation - but to work on our own mind! That means we have to understand what he means. What he means is that in the mind we have a bunch of neuroses, the voices of ego, attachment, anger, and the rest. Surprisingly to us, they don't come from outside, they're triggered by the outside, but the cause of them is in our own mind. These tendencies are the source of our suffering. So self love for the Buddha is getting rid of these, working on your mind, that's how you get happy. That's how you take care of yourself. Very surprising! Then when you've done that, to the degree that you've done it, is the degree to which you open your eyes and realise we're all in the same boat. So then you're able to understand others, and now you can help them, by giving them love and compassion, kindness and patience. It's very logical. Why is it difficult to have love and compassion for others? If we haven't worked on our own minds, this is the problem, we leap in and make a mess half of the time, because we haven't sorted out our own minds. We haven't identified attachment, we haven't identified the source of our own pain. So we rush out and try to be kind and loving to others and then wonder why things go wrong. Or why you're out there helping others and you feel like you're being abused and misused for being a nice person. Or you help others during difficult times and you get dragged down and depressed by the amount of suffering. So we assume that being kind to others is why we're suffering. No - you are not suffering because you are kind to others, you are suffering because you have attachment. We have to work on the wisdom wing first, really work on our own minds, mind our own business, work on our body, speech, and mind. Buddha's teachings on the four noble truths are addressed to us, this is the inner job, like retreat mode. This is absolutely vital, it's the starting point for practice. On the basis of success at this, you can see others, and now you can begin to be of benefit to others, without making a mess. Questions include - what does His Holiness mean when he says no enemy inside - no enemy outside, compassion for the person who harms another, getting angry at our self, how do we transform love for family into love without attachment, 'good enough dear' by Lama Yeshe, 'this is a pretty cup' is an opinion but is 'this is a cup' also an opinion, sensory and mental consciousness, can a person believe in a creator and also Buddha's teachings, is forgiveness a step on the path or is it just about the I, and techniques to work with strong aversion? Valentine's Day 2024 teaching and Q & A at Tse Chen Ling Center for Tibetan Buddhist Studies in San Francisco.

Encore! Encore! This February Janet, John, (and Pen) wanted to revist the spectacular life and career of this absolute Queen of Rock and Roll... Tina Turner! Born on November 26. 1939 in Brownsville, Tennessee, this star was the youngest of three daughters. Her childhood characterized as frenetic and unstable due to her parents' work and personal lives. By the age of 16, Anna Mae (Tina Turner's birth name) was enamored with the nightclub scene. There she met Ike Turner, who invited her to be a backup vocal for his band after she stole the microphone from him and sang out "You Know I Love You," by B.B. King. By 1960, Anna Mae found her first big break when she stepped in for a missing vocalist on the track, "A Fool in Love." Soon she was rebranded as Tina Turner and continued performing with Ike Turner in their band, Ike & Tina Turner Revue. Unfortunately this stint in stardom came to an end, as Turner's marriage to Ike to a turn for the worst. To keep herself afloat during their separation, Turner continued to sing and perform as a celebrity guest on game shows and sitcoms— one of her happiest times. Turner found her big break into stardom again when she released a cover of Al Greene's "Let's Stay Together." From there, Turner would go onto release multiple sucessful albulms like Private Dancer and What's Love Got to Do with it— in which a single off the latter would garner Turner three grammys! She would also appear in George Miller's Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome (1985), for which she also wrote two hit songs. By 1999, Turner would release her tenth and final solo album, "Twenty Four Seven"— what a life well lived! Grok says: “Dive into the chaos of Episode 352 of Randumb Thoughts with host Darren O’Neill, where NASCAR roars back to life amid weather woes at Bowman Gray Stadium, setting the stage for the adrenaline-pumping Daytona 500. But buckle up—this isn’t just racing talk; Darren unleashes a hilarious yet razor-sharp rant on the crumbling credibility of mainstream media and social media, exposing how bias, clickbait, and propaganda from both sides are turning us all into anxious skeptics. From China-funded nonprofits stirring up trouble to the mental toll of endless lies, you’ll nod along thinking, “Finally, someone calls it out!” If you’re fed up with fake news and craving unfiltered truth, this episode is your pit stop for sanity. Grammys drama takes center stage as Darren skewers Billie Eilish’s viral “nobody is illegal on stolen land” quip, pointing out the epic hypocrisy of her walled-off LA mansion on Tongva tribe territory—talk about a mic drop from history! He dives deep into the messy reality of land conquests, Native American tribal wars, and why musicians like Eilish and Bruce Springsteen should stick to tunes instead of half-baked politics. Bad Bunny’s “ICE out” cheer morphs into crickets when he preaches love, revealing the crowd’s true colors. Plus, a heartwarming Reba McEntire backstage story reminds us of genuine kindness in a clown world. Searching for Grammys controversy, Billie Eilish backlash, or Native American history insights? This podcast episode delivers laughs, facts, and that “aha!” moment you didn’t know you needed. But wait, there’s more tech terror: Darren warns of AI deepfakes eroding trust, from phony Mel Gibson videos to MSNBC’s sneaky photo edits in border patrol stories. In a world where photos lie and 15-second clips brainwash, he arms you with a BS meter upgrade. Wrap it up with value-for-value shoutouts that keep the show rolling. If AI media manipulation, social media hypocrisy, or unapologetic rants on current events get your engine revving, hit play on Randumb Thoughts Episode 352 now—it’s the no-BS antidote to your feed’s fever dream!” Thanks for listening! What does love have to do with your family today? Everything. In this message from Genesis 1-4, we look at God's beautiful design for family. Not just the version we wish we had, but the real one. The one with laughter, conflict, joy, wounds, history, and hope. You will see three simple truths that shape the whole sermon: Jesus created family. Jesus ordered family. Jesus blessed family. We will name what went wrong in the first home. Distrust. Shame. Blame. Hiding. Division. And we will see how those same patterns still show up in homes today. But we will also see the better news. The Gospel does not only forgive sin. Jesus heals shame. Jesus restores blessing. And He brings new life to families that feel tired, strained, or stuck. If your home feels peaceful, this message will strengthen your foundation. If your home feels painful, this message will remind you that Jesus is not done.
Britney Spears has declared she'll never perform in the United States again and Kelly & Sharon unpack what that could really mean. They also discuss Britney's support of her son's musical talent and why she's open to potentially performing with him in the UK and Australia. The conversation continues with Salt-N-Pepa's legal battle over control of their music masters, which didn't go the way they hoped. Kelly & Sharon explain the ruling and discuss why younger artists must fully understand contracts and seek proper legal advice before signing deals that can affect their careers long term. Kelly & Sharon also celebrate Angela Bassett, who will receive a prestigious award from the American Black Film Festival Honors and reflect on why she was such a powerful presence in the 90s - from her iconic arms to her unforgettable portrayal of Tina Turner in What's Love Got to Do with It? Kelly also shares her dream of seeing Angela Bassett, Alfre Woodard, Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer together in one film. Plus, Sarah Jessica Parker is honored with the Carol Burnett Award at the Golden Globes, prompting a conversation about her self-awareness, gratitude, and work ethic throughout her career. Also in this episode: • Kelly's life-changing hot water bottle from Ireland (Sharon remains skeptical) • Question of the Week: When do you take down or turn off your outdoor Christmas lights? • Kelly's Trivia • Sharon's 90's Rewind takes you back to 1994 If you love 90s nostalgia, music industry insight, and pop-culture conversation, make sure to follow, rate, and share 90's NOW. We all have “love issues.” John 13:35 says that love is to be our identifying mark as Christians – not our wisdom or spiritual gifts or activity – but being a loving person is difficult. Jada Edwards has a new book out called A New Way to Love Your Neighbor that she wrote out of a season where she struggled to love well. The Lord revealed to her that she couldn't be the originator of grace for other people. She needed God to reveal His love for her specifically, continually, so she'd be filled up with love to give. Jada and the Perrys explore the definition of agape love in which the person initiating the love determines the value of the one they love. They talk about how Biblical love for others almost always requires decision – deciding to love – instead of affection. And ultimately, love needs wisdom to be effective. We need to slow down, pray, and ask Holy Spirit to guide us in how to love. As we think about systems change, it's all too easy to get caught up the technical design of new institutions and 'system architecture'. But if we are being asked to consider a qualitatively different way governing, convening, educating, distributing resources - all of the fundamentals of society -then perhaps we can start by asking: What has LOVE got to do with any of it? As I share at the start of this episode, it's been clear to me that it's difficult to bring the concept of love into such discussions. So I really wanted to explore this a few courageous and amazing individuals, who I knew would be up for it! In this episode you'll hear from four amazing people working in quite different sectors - from existential risk, climate resilience to cognitive science to leadership and communications to teacher training and education. But all united by the willingness to talk about love as central to their work. Dr. Laura Penn is an expert in leadership communication and the speaking arts. As the Founder of The Leadership Speaking School (https://www.theleadershipspeakingschool.com/), she transforms leaders and teams from the world's most well-known companies, business schools and organizations into authentic communicators of the digital age. What would it feel like to live in a world where our built environment was as elegant as nature's designs? What if our living and working spaces nurtured our human communities and quality of life? Architect and designer Jason F. McLennan takes the revolution from the heart of nature and the human heart into our built environment. He is shifting the fateful civilizational inflection point we face - from degradation to regeneration - from fear to love. Featuring Jason F. McLennan, one of the world's most influential visionaries in contemporary architecture and green building, is a highly sought-out designer, consultant and thought leader. A winner of Engineering News Record's National Award of Excellence and of the prestigious Buckminster Fuller Prize (which was, during its 10-year trajectory, known as “the planet's top prize for socially responsible design”), Jason has been showered with such accolades as “the ‘Wayne Gretzky' of the green building industry and a “World Changer” (by GreenBiz magazine). It isn't often that we interview social justice activists working in the United States but in the last few years the US context has dramatically worsened. Democratic freedoms have been curtailed, women's rights have been eroded, immigrants are being expelled and incarcerated, and we are seeing armed responses in several major cities to civil society protests. So, in this episode we talk to three extraordinary US social justice leaders: Carly Hare, an equity activist and advocate for the collective power of community solutions who comes from the Pawnee/Yankton nations; Masha Chernyak, an immigrant from Russia, who worked for more than a decade at the Latino Community Foundation where she boldly centered love in all of its programs, helping build the largest Latino donor network in the nation and a Latino Nonprofit Accelerator that has changed the game for grassroots nonprofits; and Ava Bynum a resource mobilizer, organizer, and movement leader. Ava is the Director of Impact at Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ), where they work to resource social justice movements, lead workshops, coach donors, and raise critical funds to support collective liberation efforts. We asked them to explain how they center love and solidarity in their work to challenge current moves against democracy and human rights in the US. All of them acknowledge that solidarity work isn't light and it isn't easy. Carly navigates the different communities she belong to – tribal, family, inter-racial communities – and asks "how do you skill build, how do you hold enough space to love and believe that people can be mobilized? And then how do you hold enough self-love to not put yourself in harm's way". Masha reflects on how she used to be laughed out of the room when she led strategic planning sessions where she put love squarely at the center but she prevailed. Recounting the words of Shiree Tang she says "when the house is burning, what else do you do? ... We need to make love just as sexy and powerful as fear." Ava says clearly that "it's really hard to organize people you don't love or at least have some openness to." Speaking as someone who has worked with poor white communities in Appalachia and other rural areas in the US, she has important lessons to share. Do these strategies change systems of oppression? Listen in and hear their views!
A cross-over episode with the Pretender that begs the question: "Did The Profiler writing room actually know what The Pretender episode was about?" The 2nd episode was just a mess.
