Over the span of eleven minutes, the impressive short film Yeah the Boys sways and swerves through a boozy night with the lads in nondescript backyard Australia. Drinking culture, Aussie larrikinism, and the masculinity that finds fertile ground in these areas is brought to life with a pulsing score by The Avalanches. Oh, and all of this is presented with an the organic dance movements choreographed by Vanessa Marin. Yeah the Boys is written by Vanessa, with her partner Stefan Hunt taking directing duties. The titular boys are Neven Connolly, Kieran Crowe, Hadley Davidson, Jackson Garcia, Jordan Hill, Rob McLean, with Bailey Spalding appearing at the shorts start. It is, quite simply, one of the most unique and invigorating slices of Aussie cinema you'll see this year, and after winning the Best Australian Short award at the Oscar qualifying Flickerfest in 2024, and winning the Innovation Award at the St Kilda Film Festival, where it was also nominated for Best Cinematography, and receiving nominations for Best International Short at the Palm Springs Short Fest, Yeah the Boys will be available to view online from 15 October. Ahead of the films launch on Vimeo, YouTube and Instagram, I caught up with Stefan and Vanessa to talk about the process of planning and creating Yeah the Boys, I also ask Vanessa about how she managed to flow organic, natural movements in with the boys dancing, before I close the chat with asking Stefan about how Yeah the Boys plays into his relationship with death. This really is an interview that goes everywhere. For those interested in Stefan's work, including delving into his views on death, head over to StefanHunt.com.Yeah the Boys is a fantastic realisation of creativity let loose, embracing Australiana, warts and all. It stands as a reminder why Aussie films of all lengths need to be recognised and celebrated - short films are films. It all began in 2006 when he packed his camera, headed to the USA, bought an ice cream truck and drove to all fifty states to make a documentary. This adventure set him on his way to directing films all over the world capturing beautiful stories, making new friends and eating tacos. But none of this really defines why he does it, and the why is important to Stefan. You see, he believes that creativity and social impact should not be mutually exclusive and his work consistently reflects this. According to Stefan Hunt, he is a certified happy-go-lucky guy where death simply did not mean that much and it was far ahead of him. In his journey where he met people from all walks of life, someone has advised him to write poetry and the first words that he wrote were , "We're all going to die." His new appreciation of death brought a new vision to life. In 2017 Stefan launched his most ambitious creative endeavor titled We're All Going To Die. This consisted of a published book, short film and sold out multimedia art festival in Sydney Australia. The project aims to empower an audience to ‘fear less and live more' through humour, colour and death. It has since toured to New Zealand and USA. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS: A COVID perspective from Australia The neglected long-term mental health affects of COVID The reason why we are not able to handle little deaths in our life Anxiety as a catalyst for living free of fear Why ego prevents us from growing as people Why is it important to unlearn things in our life to be able to move forward Recovering perfectionism Using the tough times in our life to express ourselves whether in art or something else Why Stefan became afraid to let other people know about his first poem The El Camino trail and being vulnerable The fuel to the fire of why Stefan really believes in the We're All Going To Die project How Stefan faced the burnout that the project brought to him The vision that Stefan has for the project and his plans on going global Why is the We're All Going To Die project dubbed a theme park for the soul LINKS MENTIONED: Visit Stefan's website at StefanHunt.com See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Filmmakers Lincoln Caplice and Stefan Hunt messed around with cameras together as kids. They now have real deal grown-up careers in art and film. Stefan made waves in 2006 when he filmed his journey surfing all 50 states across the U.S, and more recently, has explored how we understand our demise in his immersive project "We're all Going to Die". Lincoln cut his teeth early with film legend Taylor Steele and has gone on to build a strong portfolio of commercial and artistic short films. We talk with both of these young Aussie creatives about the changing landscape of surf film, why a good story always carries the day, and what kind of film they would make with 20 mil of FU money.
In episode 2 of our second season, Stefan Hunt, recounted his -short- life story, from a typical western childhood in New South Wales, Australia, to his early foray into film making, crossing the US at 18 with no money, a bieber haircut and a drive to surf all 48 states, including the 20+ landlocked ones. His first film, self-described as “cringeworthy”, got him some attention and eventually led him to become the multi-talented professional filmmaker, artist and storyteller he is today; all the while continuing on his literally off the beaten path journey. Listen in to hear more about how one can be a highly creative, decent and compassionate human being at the same time. About the podcast: The intent behind our podcast series "Truth Is Golden" is to look at renowned creatives and their work with a critical eye. We aim to ask deep questions in order to peel back the layers of marketing, clever one-liners and sexy branding. We want to show the world what it truly takes for genuinely creative forces to find their own voice build a career on what is very often nothing more than a drive to do things differently. We want to hear about the successes, the failures, the inspirational stories and the lessons gleaned from all of it. We want the truth, so that we can inspire other people to fulfill their own creative aspirations and in the process contribute to making the world a better place. StartUp Creative - Your go-to source for straight-up business advice
“We’re a community of artists and like-minded people and basically we use art in all different forms to create amazing experiences that result in really meaningful conversations; conversations around fear and death. And we use that to empower people to live with less fear and ultimately live the most radical life that they can while they’re here on Earth.” – Stefan Hunt. This week we go deep with Stefan Hunt, the founder of ‘We’re All Going to Die.’ As the name suggests, Stefan is creating a dialogue around the traditionally taboo topics of death, fear and vulnerability through his inspiring and creative business. Kaylene and Stefan discuss how death can inspire us to live our lives to the fullest. They chat about mental health, the inspiration behind the project, and how it works as a business. Stefan also gives advice on how to deal with fear in order to start your business or project. “You can get so caught up with the ‘what ifs?’ but why don’t you say ‘why not?’ Because at the end of the day you don’t know what is going to happen if you take that risk. All you know is that you’re going to die someday, and as morbid as that sounds, that should be enough to motivate you to go for it.”
