Let's face it: it's easier to talk about life rather than the end of it. But the reality is, we're all going to face it at some point in our lives. What if there's a platform that can guide you step-by-step to your journey through the dying process? For this episode, we speak to Jane Butler, founder of the online planning platform for end-of-life navigation called Near. She started being aware of the importance of end-of-life conversations when her fiancé (now husband) was diagnosed with brain cancer at the age of 23 and was given 2 years to live. Now her husband is cancer-free, Jane researched more about non-profit organizations focused on end-of-life care, health, and awareness and came up with the idea of founding Near. NEAR focuses on patients and caregivers of patients who have a terminal illness and serves as a platform and self-care home for them while navigating through paperwork and health care appointments. The Near Navigators or end-of-life doulas also provide one-on-one emotional support even for families to help understand what is happening during this difficult time. Have you ever felt lost or disconnected from yourself, like your life lacked meaning and purpose? That's how Judy Lee felt as she approached her mid-40s. Through life and dark times, she lost my confidence and drive. Instead of living with intention, she lived in fear and felt numb and helpless. She felt like she didn't matter. Judy Lee had a family photography business she started years ago but resisted investing any real effort into it. Suffering from impostor syndrome, she lacked the confidence to even call herself a ‘photographer.' That all changed when she saw a portrait photographer speak and it awakened something in her. Judy just knew women's portraits were her calling and it became louder than her fear so she pursued it. She discovered she could capture a woman's essence, confidence, inner beauty, and soul. She felt destined to succeed but her fears kept getting in the way and she realized she was doing without being. Judy was asking women to be vulnerable but SHE wasn't vulnerable. She was asking women to reconnect with themselves but SHE wasn't connected to herself. She had so much more to learn… That's when Judy made the decision to face her fears and her journey to reconnect with herself truly began.* Judy didn't know exactly what she was doing or where she was going — it felt like a leap into the dark unknown but one she trusted. Once she walked through that darkness, she discovered everything she aspired to be was already inside her, in her true self. Judy confronted old fears, shed old beliefs, and listened to her gut. In that process, she found her life's purpose unfolding. Judy Lee had to go on her own journey to realize her purpose is to empower women by giving them opportunities to go on theirs. At this point in my life, where I notice every single year that's passing by, it's not about accomplishments and achievements but gaining experience in every way as much as possible. "I wanted to be a comedian & a grief therapist. I did one of those things- and added LMFT after my name. Not funny, but useful and so full of purpose. I love my job. But I wanted to add useful content to the public domain. The things I learned in graduate school- that made me aware of the death traumas (almost) all of us carry around on the daily. Some more training in grief & death (thanatology) and the desire to share these new concepts was busting. Social Media was just so dang daunting- talking about death online? Um. Some people were not a fan. And THEY LET YOU KNOW. But I persisted. A series of bad TikTok's. Terrible-looking Insta posts. A few live videos. I apologize to you all -you can't un-see that. But the series- 30 EOL Doulas in 30 Days was born. And ta-da- it felt right- we were speaking to (and being useful to) both EOLD's and the public. I look forward to offering you more of these series!" See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

She's spread her sex positive message all over the world. Thanks to her conversational approach and sense of humor, people have told her she's like ‘your best girlfriend…with a PH.D.' and that working with her is like a great doctor's appointment…with a glass of wine. But, what fuels here are the stories. Incredible stories from women who have spent their lives facing the crippling double standard to be sexually alluring but not in-your-face. Women who can't seem to keep up with the rules because they keep changing. Women who decided to chart their own course for their bodies and sexual well-being; who found the undeniable link between empowerment, self worth and sexual agency. She is also passionate about supporting men in their quest to find meaningful relationships and go deeper into a fulfilling and evolved sexual journey. Men who have been underestimated. Men who are underserved. Men who are hungry to elevate. She provides a safe place, a tested, true, and relatable process to heal past experiences and empower futures. She believes in order for us to create a safe, exciting and meaningful sexual culture, we must include all genders and look at sexuality holistically and she'd love to walk alongside you on your journey. As a self-confessed person who avoids social media, Vanessa Laughlin finds memes as one of the things that are carrying her through this pandemic. Sharing memes with her friends, listening to blues and Spanish music, and doing something creative are the bright spots of her day. Vanessa, the Principal and Founder of Banister Advisors, LLC, works with individuals who faces grief and in need of something just like how memes are for her. Vanessa's nearly 20-year professional background spans strategy development, implementation planning, business process improvement, product marketing, technology implementations, organizational design, and change management. Through the founding of Banister Advisors, LLC her passion for client services had met the opportunity to ease the complex emotional and logistical burdens that individuals and families confront in the face of critical circumstances across their lifespan. The concept for Banister Advisors was inspired in large part by the 2016 death of the founder's father-in-law, Jay Banister Laughlin, MSW, after an unexpected health crisis. The memory of Jay's sacrifice and dedication to serving his family and community as a social worker, mediator, and therapist, serves as the foundation for Banister's mission. My first full-length episode gets REAL personal, REAL fast, as I interview my ex-husband, Chris Elliott. 10 years ago, we killed our marriage. We also re-birthed a successful co-parenting relationship and have grown into a really great friendship in the process. But it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows. And now 10 years later, we talk about our conscious uncoupling in-depth, pretty much for the first time. We each learn new things about the other. There are tears, there is laughter. We talk about fear, loneliness, dark nights of the soul and how we each navigated these things in the name of personal evolution. It's juicy and entertaining at the same time.
