In today's episode, we have a very special guest, Matthew R. Reynolds.  I reached out to Matthew after reading his weekly email where he spoke about envy and jealousy. But the first half of our conversation focuses on his father and reclaiming ancestors.Matthew opens up about a longing he has carried with him throughout his life - a longing to know his father. As he shares his heartfelt desire to connect with his deceased father and explore the impact of his absence, we dive deep into the themes of internalized racial oppression and the capitalist system that perpetuates it.Matthew's father passed away from Emphysema and COPD, and to honor him, Matthew takes a moment to say his father's name out loud. We learn about his great-great-grandfather, who was a slave in Alabama, and how this past has strongly influenced his own father's life and subsequently Matthew's own.As the conversation unfolds, Amanda and Matthew share their experiences of connecting with their ancestors. Amanda reveals her deep connection with trees as her ancestors, while Matthew reflects on his Irish ancestry and the importance of standing by trees. The belief that we are all connected, made of stardust, forms the foundation of their discussion. As we journey through Matthew's exploration of his father's life, we also find ourselves transported to the awe-inspiring beauty of the big island of Hawaii where Matthew resides. But the conversation doesn't end there. Aminata and Matthew discuss dance and theater as a form of healing abuse, racism and intergenerational trauma. In the second half, Matthew reframes our perceptions of jealousy and envy. He encourages us to question the definition of success imposed upon us by society and to explore our own unique paths. Matthew also offers a powerful acronym for FAIL: "first attempt in learning." Matthew also emphasizes accountability as a positive in our journey towards authenticity. We all need supportive communities and coaches who can help us navigate our shadows and empower us to stay true to ourselves and achieve our fullest potential.Matthew also invites us to embrace difficulty and discomfort because they can lead us to profound personal and collective transformation. So, grab a cup of tea, find a comfortable spot, and join us as we explore the intertwined threads of ancestry, healing, and the complex emotions of envy and jealousy. What is your truth? What are the systems that get in the way? And what will be your way to build unconditional belonging, nonetheless? In this episode we explore the sincere insights and genuinely beautiful approach of Matthew Reynolds to create a fundamental impact on the intersectionality of oppression (systems of racism, colonialism, sexism, capitalism). Matthew is a recent author, former teacher, artist. He is a facilitator and consultant in the DEI space with a deep perspective on the human experience, doing powerful, foundational work. He gracefully and bravely shares his own lived experiences that now inform his work to help people craft their own equity lens. An Equity lens is a tool crafted by the individual, utilising their own lived experiences. Ever evolving, as one meets new people, has new experiences, gains knowledge and wisdom, and recognizes what their own definition of antiracist work is. For the purpose of building unconditional belonging. A call to action. This means exploring: What is your truth? What does it mean for you to become your biggest, fullest and brightest? And equally offering others that personal dignity? What gets in the way? In this conversation we talk about spotting limiting beliefs as well as systems that are hurtful and harmful. To the point where you can calmly be in conversation and say, “No thank you. I don't subscribe to that ideology.” When you craft your own equity lens, you will have a tool for yourself that shifts your consciousness and truly changes the culture around you. “ I wanted the classroom to be based on the fact that first and foremost, bring everything you got. Bring all aspects of who you feel and think and believe yourself to be, because we're all constantly forming that idea, all trying to figure out who our authentic self is. So through that, I started to focus more on creating an actual pledge for each of my class periods. So instead of saying these are the rules, I had my students help create community in that particular class period and what that meant to them. So that's something that I've presented nationally on creating a pledge, a classroom pledge for each individual classroom.”-Matthew Reynolds In this episode of Control the Room, I had the pleasure of speaking with Matthew Reynolds about building a Diversity and Inclusion Consultancy, what inspired their strong point of view within the industry, and finding a sense of belonging growing up as a multiethnic, same gender, peaceful warrior in rural America.  We explore strategies for creating environments of humanity and shifting the consciousness of humanity.  We then discuss the distinction between acquaintance, friend, and close friend.  Listen in to question how much of your thinking is your own thinking.

On Monday, me and my filmmaking group "Some Guys With A Camera" were invited to screen our latest short film "Blackbird" at the Plaza Cinema in Liverpool, followed by a Q&A with the cast and crew. Blackbird is a 20 minute short film we shot on a minuscule budget in January/February and released in March online. Over the summer it received several nominations from international film festivals. The plot is "Liverpool, 1985. Trampled by Thatcherist society and the loss of her long-term boyfriend, nihilistic loner Mary-Kate turns to petty crime to climb the class ladder as an inner-city avenger." In the Q&A we had: Matthew Reynolds (writer and director), Phoebe Riding (lead actor who plays Mary-Kate), Conor O'Neill (producer and supporting actor), myself (producer and supporting actor), and Ugnius Gorbaciovas (lead actor who plays Vincent.) The film is available to view on Amazon Prime here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/video/detail/B08DK31XQZ/ If you would like to keep up with my filmmaking adventures, you can follow the Some Guys With A Camera page on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/someguyswithacamera/ If you enjoyed the podcast, you can follow the show on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/artimitateslifepodcast/ or buy me a coffee at https://www.buymeacoffee.com/artimitateslife. We've been having a lovely time with Dreams, the Media Molecule game that's been in early access for almost a year, and in development before the PS4 was even revealed. The themes raised by Matthew Reynolds' Likenesses: Translation, Illustration, Interpretation will be discussed by Dr Jason Gaiger (Ruskin School), Dr Adriana Jacobs (Oriental Studies) and Dr Nick Halmi (English). Translation, illustration and interpretation have at least two things in common. They all begin when sense is made in the act of reading: that is where illustrative images and explanatory words begin to form. And they all ask to be understood in relation to the works from which they have arisen: reading them is a matter of reading readings. Likenesses explores this palimpsestic realm, with examples from Dante to the contemporary sculptor Rachel Whiteread. The complexities that emerge are different from Empsonian ambiguity or de Man's unknowable infinity of signification: here, meaning dawns and fades as the hologrammic text is filled out and flattened by successive encounters. Likenesses follows on from the argument of Reynolds's The Poetry of Translation (2011), extending it through other translations and beyond into a wide range of layered texts. Browning emerges as a key figure because his poems laminate languages, places, times and modes of utterance with such compelling energy. There are also substantial, innovative accounts of Dryden, Stubbs, Goya, Turner, Tennyson, Ungaretti and many more. Matthew Reynolds teaches at Oxford where he is a Fellow of St Anne's College and The Times lecturer in the English Faculty. It has been said of him that 'the best critics, like the best poets (in Browning's words) impart the gift of seeing to the rest: Reynolds has this gift of seeing and imparting' (TLS). His earlier books are The Poetry of Translation, The Realms of Verse 1830-1870, the novels The World Was All Before Them and Designs for a Happy Home(/i), and editions of Dante in English and of Manzoni.

David Herman is Professor of the Engaged Humanities in the Department of English Studies at Durham University. He is author of Storytelling and the Sciences of Mind (MIT Press, 2013) and many other books and articles working at the intersection of literary study and cognitive science. Emily Troscianko is a JRF in Modern Languages at St John’s College, Oxford. Her study of Kafka, Kafka’s Cognitive Realism, will be published early next year by Routledge. James Carney is a post-doctoral researcher in the Social and Evolutionary Science Research Group in Oxford. He is co-editor of Beckett Re-Membered: After the Centenary (2012) and is currently working on a monograph entitled: Life Stories: Towards a Biosemiotic Model of Narrative Signification to be published by de Gruyter. The seminar is the first organized as part of a new project with the working title: “Cultures of Mindreading: The novel and other minds” Report from Cultures of Mind-Reading: The Novel and Other Minds The session inaugurated a new thread in the Comparative Criticism and Translation Programme which will be investigating ways in which the novel as a form reflects on and contributes to a flexible understanding of how human beings interact with, understand and make sense of each other. David Herman’s presentation focused on the limit case: interacting with and understanding non-human animals, asking where and why we draw the limits of mutual understanding, and looking at the ways in which narratives which focus on animal consciousness can reflect on, expand and explore the limits of human self-understanding. Emily Troscianko, in her response, asked whether there was a lingering commitment in Herman’s otherwise very innovative approach to a model of consciousness as a representation of the world (agent-makes-representation-of-environment-in-its-mind). This is a crucial point. If we want to escape from the idea that literature ‘mirrors’ the world, it is probably helpful to give up the parallel trope that the mind ‘mirrors’ reality and to look to models, like that of Alva Noë, on whom David Herman drew in his presentation, which understand the mind not as a mirror or inner state but as a form of shared practice: a product of things people do together in a shared environment. James Carney emphasized the importance of checking the models of narrative we develop with what can be observed of the way people actually behave. He reminded us of the variety of narrative forms, not all of which we treat in the same way, and not all of which we have the same expectations of. Finally, he issued a caveat about anthropomorphism. However circumspect we are when approaching and trying to understand animal minds, it is all too easy to construct them in the end as nothing more than attenuated human minds. An element which strongly emerged from the discussion was the strength of the assumption that there will be one uniform human mind or one uniform animal mind. But the more we include culture and shared practices of interaction in our approach, the less tenable this will appear. Human beings and dogs learn to interact with each other in specific contexts, so there will be as many varieties of canine minds as there are cultures of dog-handling. The session opened the way for further study of the different cultures through which we learn to engage with other minded beings. If there's one person that One Life Left chooses to follow as their leader in life other than Taylor Swift or Martin Hollis then it has to be Dean Gaffney. So when we read that he had applied to join MI5 we thought that if we got an actual spy on the show then it would help us in our quest to Be Like Dean. Unfortunately Simon read the e-mail wrong and booked Matthew Reynolds, gaming editor for Digital Spy. But that actually turned out to be a great decision as we're a radio show about videogames and we're not sure Judi Dench would be able to tell us much about the Wii U (although Nintendo have probably signed her up for an advert). Matthew tells us what it's like to work for the Internet's fourteenth best website and what the Wii U is actually like to play as Nintendo didn't send us one after that incident with Shigsy we can't talk about. He also manages to avoid staring at Simon's massive coldsore, getting confused by Ste's hungover questioning and the thing Ann did that was literally unbroadcastable. However, he did let slip about the housewarming party that he's holding on the same day as our Christmas Party. So that's our after party sorted, we just have the hotel lobby and the room to arrange now.  Cheerio!Team OLL x Links:https://twitter.com/Crazyreynhttp://www.digitalspy.co.ukhttp://onelifeleft.eventbrite.com/https://www.facebook.com/events/458392150874256/ Tracklist: 1.
