For episode 11, I was joined by my colleague, Managing Partner at Alliance Wealth Advisors, Chris Ross, and Stephanie Decker, who serves as the Associate Vice President of Social and Economic Impact at Lackawanna College.  Together, we recap the first annual financial impact summit held in partnership with the college in the fall of 2022.Rather than have listeners sit through the entire program, we took sound bites from our speakers that night, including Maggie Mineo Zayac (owner of the Daisy Collective), John Basalyga (President of JBAS Realty and Eastern Roofing Systems), Dr. Jill Murray (President of Lackawanna College), and  Scott Lynett (estate planning attorney an business owner) among others. Each speaker shared incredible insights and personal stories that benefited everyone who attended.  Stephanie, Chris, and I then expand on some of these topics for those who couldn't attend. Our hope is that our conversation will also add some fresh perspective to those who were in the room that evening. With so many great speakers, the event was packed with interesting conversations and useful information. Frankly, it wasn't easy what to narrow down what to include in this podcast, but we did the best we could. Some of the topics we explore include: The value of schools and families teaching young people “the foundations” of personal finance more effectively, the importance of knowing how our experiences early on in life shapes our financial decision-making. We also explored how people in the later stages of life have their own set of challenges, especially those involved in family-owned businesses. Finally, we talked about how financial education has not been a focus for school systems or universities. While it's important to improve financial education, it was clear from listening to our panel that talking about money at the kitchen table is just as important as in the classroom. As we look ahead to growing this event in 2023, we would love to hear from business and education leaders in our region to make it better. If you have ideas to improve the event, or if you have interest in participating we would love to hear from you. Thank you for listening, and we hope you enjoy this episode.

In this episode, I interview Prof. Stephanie Decker about her new book Postcolonial Transition and Global Business History British Multinational Companies in Ghana and Nigeria (Routledge, 2022). Prof. Mick Rowlinson also joined the conversation about the book. British multinationals faced unprecedented challenges to their organizational legitimacy in the middle of the twentieth century as the European colonial empires were dismantled and institutional transformations changed colonial relationships in Africa and other parts of the world. This book investigates the political networking and internal organizational changes in five British multinationals (United Africa Company, John Holt & Co., Ashanti Goldfields Corporation, Bank of West Africa and Barclays Bank DCO). These firms were forced to adapt their strategies and operations to changing institutional environments in two English-speaking West African countries, Ghana (formerly the Gold Coast) and Nigeria, from the late 1940s to the late 1970s. Decolonization meant that formerly imperial businesses needed to develop new political networks and change their internal organization and staffing to promote more Africans to managerial roles. This postcolonial transition culminated in indigenization programmes (and targeted nationalizations) which forced foreign companies to sell equity and assets to domestic investors in the 1970s. Postcolonial Transition and Global Business History is the first in-depth historical study on how British firms sought to adapt over several decades to rapid political and economic transformation in West Africa. Exploring both postcolonial transitions and development discourse, this book addresses the topics with regard to business and economic history and will be of interest to researchers, academics, and students in the fields of organizational change, political economy, African studies and globalization. Episode 131: #OnTheStacks in the blu door studio with Stephanie Decker, Associate Vice President of Social and Economic Impact at Lackawanna College. Stephanie took over cooking duties for her family when she was just 10 years old after her mother became mentally ill and as her father was suffering from alcoholism. She went on to study at the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) to become a Chef, worked for 20+ years in the restaurant industry, 10 of which she owned her own restaurant. In 2010, her life and purpose intersected when she met a few executives from Lackawanna College that tasked her with starting the College's School of Hospitality program. She built it from scratch with borrowed kitchens, Bunsen burners, and pots and pans out of the trunk of her car. The program now boasts 4 degrees and an 85 seat restaurant and bar at their main campus in Scranton, PA. Now, as the College's AVP of Social and Economic Impact, she uses her scrappy, make-it-happen mindset to help people live better lives through education, entrepreneurship, and community connection. We also discuss a book that she is co-authoring along with Lackawanna College President Dr. Jill Murray, and Provost Dr. Erica Barone Pricci. The book, which hasn't been published yet, focuses on the strategies these 3 leaders implemented over the last 10+ years to create a culture of innovation at the College, one of which landed the College on Fast Company's prestigious list of the World's Most Innovative Companies. Do you remember what we were doing two years ago - early Spring, 2012? Our guest, Stephanie Decker, was in the middle of a storm. As a category five tornado ripped through the tiny town of Henryville, Indiana, lifting her home off its foundation and smashing it to the ground, she used her body as a shield to protect her two young children from flying debris, falling beams, and a disintegrating house. Even after her legs were crushed from a structural collapse, her motherly instincts did not fail her - directing her kids on what to do next. She did what any mom would do for her family. Because of her heroic efforts, her children walked away from the rubble unscathed. As she explains on the show, “Not even a scratch.” Since the accident, Stephanie has inspired a nation. She has appeared on the Today Show, The Ellen Degeneres Show, ABC World News Tonight (as "person of the week"), and featured in publications such as USA Today, and People Magazine. She also started the Stephanie Decker Foundation, which helps children with prosthetic legs, enjoy sports and helps people gain access to leading-edge prosthetics.
