This month's Deep Dive series is about parenting through uncertainty. Listen to all of the episodes in the series with this Spotify playlist. Is it okay for us to be emotional in front of our kids? Julie, one of our podcast listeners, asked this question in our Facebook group:  Is it good for kiddos to see their moms have emotions? And how can we talk through our emotions with our kids? My grandmother lost her husband when my dad was 11 years old. She had four kids, no job. She had to take care of everything. Once I asked her how she coped with all of that, and she said she just held it together, always, except when she cried in the shower at night. At first, I thought, wow, how strong of her. Now that I have kids, I kind of wonder: is shower crying always good? Never good? Sometimes good?  Shower crying is definitely better than swallowing emotions entirely. And there are times when our emotions, and/or the situations causing them, are too unsettling for our kids to handle. Sometimes it's good for kids to see our emotions, but we shouldn't be asking kids to hold them for us. But studies show that children whose mothers express emotions like sadness or loneliness in their presence are more emotionally literate as they grow. By serving as “emotional coaches” for our kids, and modeling how we process difficult moments in our own lives, we can raise kids more able to handle such moments themselves.  In this episode we discuss when it's okay to be emotional in front of our kids, why suppressing our emotions entirely might not work as well as we think it does, and when shower cries are most certainly called for. Good news: we don't have to fear that showing our vulnerability is a bad thing. Our listener Jennifer summed it up best: "I don't hide the most intense parts of being human from the very people I'm trying to help on their journey as humans.” Here are links to some of the writing on the topic that we discuss in this episode:  John Lamble for The Conversation: Should you hide negative emotions from children? Peter Aldington OBE, world-renowned architect and garden designer, with his wife Margaret - whose energy and partnership have been as fundamental to his success as any other creative's, though she professes to not being a designer of any kind. I have wanted to record this interview for a long time. Peter is a world-renowned architect, having achieved no less than 9 (yes, you're reading that correctly, 9) listed buildings in his lifetime. Each of the nine houses he designed while working as an architect, along with the garden that he created in the eighties, is listed (aka protected) by English Heritage.   Some record.  He's also a charming guy. We have based our photography business in the original studio where he began his architectural practice, Aldington, Craig and Collinge, a building we have completely fallen in love with in the past 11 years. As you can imagine, I wanted to record an interview with him; in particular, I wanted to ask him about creativity and how he turned his influences into something tangible. Sometimes, however, the more exciting topics creep in as you talk, which was the case during this interview. Sitting with Peter and his wife Margaret, it quickly became apparent that the more important questions were about relationships: relationships with colleagues, clients and, of course (and you'll hear this throughout the interview), the relationship between Peter and Margaret and their family. It's funny how you can plan all you like, but ultimately, life (and creativity) have a way of taking you on unexpected journeys. But for me, well, I think it is a lovely interview with an architect who has made an immeasurable contribution to architecture and garden design. Usually, I would ask Peter and Margaret for their book choice, but I have chosen two that feature Peter's work for this episode. The first is A Garden and Three Houses: The Story of Architect Peter Aldington's Garden and Three Village Houses by Jane Brown. The second is Houses: Created by Peter Aldington, a beautiful book choc full of stunning line drawings (and if you know anything about me, you'll know just how much I adore exceptional illustrations!) Enjoy! Cheers P. If you enjoy this podcast, please head over to Mastering Portrait Photography, for more articles and videos about this beautiful industry. Jane Brown is filling in for Libby Znaimer today. She is joined by Dr. Alisa Naiman, family physician and the founder and medical director of The Medical Station in Toronto, and Dr. Malcolm Moore, a medical oncologist at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and Dr. Amol Verma, a staff physician in General Internal Medicine at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto. Today: we start things off with a discussion about the ideal retirement age for your health. After that, we discuss National Caregiver Day which happened yesterday but still deserves to be talked about today. According to the Ontario Caregivers website, their role became more strained and, "31% of caregivers provide more than 10 hours of care per week, up from 26% before the pandemic. 50% of caregivers are in desperate need of a break but have difficulties finding additional support or time for themselves." Finally, we get into the role that ChatGPT and AI technologies are playing in the healthcare industry. And, are the advancements in AI outpacing the ethical planning we should take to make sure we use such tools in a safe way? ----- FOOD BANK IN TORONTO SEES USAGE REACH FORTY YEAR HIGH Jane Brown is now joined by Neil Hetherington, Toronto Daily Bread Food Bank. It's not the kind of news you want to hear: the CEO of the largest food bank in Toronto is calling on the province to take urgent action and provide emergency assistance to those on social assistance as usage of the food bank reaches a forty year high (as many as 270,000 visits across its programs and partners in March). That's four times higher than before the pandemic. So, how did we get here? And, when will the government really get the reality that food is a right and one that needs to be a priority when it comes to helping those in need. Jane Brown is filling in for Libby Znaimer today. She is joined by Lisa Raitt, former deputy leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, John Milloy, Former Ontario Liberal MPP who served as a cabinet minister under the Dalton McGuinty and Kathleen Wynne governments and Peggy Nash,  the New Democratic Party Member of Parliament for the Parkdale—High Park electoral district in Toronto. Today: we discuss the latest to do with Toronto's mayoral race where high-profile candidates like Councillors Brad Bradford, Josh Matlow, Ana Bailao and former police chief Mark Saunders among others officially registered this week. Meanwhile, we get reaction from our panelists over Ottawa's budget which came out a week ago today and had nothing for Toronto. Will the City have the money needed to fill its own hole in the budget? We also get reaction to Premier Doug Ford calling out Ottawa for a lack of urgency when it comes to bail reform--especially as Toronto sees an increase in violence on and off the TTC. And, Donald Trump becomes the first ever former president of the United States to be charged criminally. We get into all the news. ---- DON'T BLOCK THE BOX: CITY TO INCREASE FINES FOR DRIVERS BLOCKING INTERSECTIONS Jane Brown is now joined by Jennifer McKelvie, Deputy Mayor of the City of Toronto. The City is going to be cracking down on drivers who "block the box" at intersections and adding to our road congestion. So, if you make an improper stop at an intersection, the fines will go up from $85 to $450 and from $120-$500 if the intersection happens to be in a community safety zone. One of the questions we have is: how will this be enforced? ---- ARTEMIS II AND CANADA'S ROLE IN IT Jane Brown is now joined by Prof. John E. Moores, York Research Chair in Space Exploration and Science Advisor to the President Canadian Space Agency Yesterday, NASA alongside the Canadian Space Agency announced the crew for the Artemis II mission to the moon. Fortunately there is enough left of our built history in order to tell the stories of the past and re-ignite passion for local culture. Her passion for local history has now found its ideal outlet with this venture. Dr Brown holds a PhD in Ethnology, gained in 2010 from the University of Aberdeen.
