What actually is happiness? We're all searching for it but are we searching in the right places? In this podcast Nathalie talks to the Happyologist, Susanna Halonen about how we need to shift our mind set with happiness, how the 'how to' guides will never work, knowing it's the small steps that matter and the importance of finding ways of putting yourself first. Big takeaway - Research shows those external desires we have such as the job, the house, marriage, where you live....only influence 10% of your happiness. The other 90% is about how you view and approach the world! Susannna's amazing top tips: 1. Gratitude exercise - Write down 3 specific things you are proud of each day 2. Journaling - Every week ask yourself these three questions: 1 achievement proud of, 1 learning from this week, 1 beautiful moment 3. Listen to your intuition - Quieten the outside noise. This week we caught up with the world’s first and only Happyologist - Susanna Halonen Susanna has made it her life’s work to study happiness and is author of ‘Screw Finding your Passion’ and ‘Happiness is here - a 30 day guide to joy and fulfilment’. She describes herself as a born pessimist who trained herself to be a happy optimist and now helps others to do the same. So we joined her in her flat in London with her big cuddly dog to dive deep into the topic of happiness and what it really takes to live a happy and fulfilled life. We talked about: - How happiness as a practice (just like love) and not a destination and certainly not a permanent state we can maintain 24/7. - The importance of allowing ourselves to feel negative emotions and how they in fact play an important role in us cultivating happiness in life. - How being successful in life is not what brings about happiness, but quite the opposite: cultivating happiness TODAY in your life is what will in fact help you to achieve your dreams. Plus Susanna shares her top tips on practicing happiness on a day to day basis and even showed us how to make a gratitude practice even more powerful. So snuggle up and enjoy a deep dive into happiness. We guarantee it will make you smile :) x Selina & Vicki P.S. For any recruitment consultants out there, we laughed at the idea of Selina once having stint as a recruitment consultant, not to disrespect recruitment consultants but because the idea of Selina in any office job always makes us laugh (think wild animal in a cage not being able to sit still).

Today on the show I'm talking to author and life coach, The Happyologist, Susannah Halonen. One of the most common questions Susannah gets asked is, ‘Are you always happy”, to which she always responds, ‘No, I'm human.” While she's now recognised for her research on happiness, she's the first to tell you that it took years for her to get to the place she's in personally. Before she embarked on this journey, she subscribed to the myths about happiness we've all bought into: That happiness means never experiencing negative emotions. And that to experience happiness, we constantly need to be succeeding at what we're doing and reach every single one of our goals in record time. Of course, none of that is true. That's why she's made it her mission to change the way we think about happiness in order to start cultivating a definition on our terms. To celebrate the launch of her new book, Happiness Is Here: A 30 Day Guide To Joy And Fulfilment, Susannah and I talk about what it was like giving up her high flying job in marketing to go back to school and start building a coaching business from the ground up. We talk about how her relationships changed, as her definition of success did; we talk about the role habits play in living a good life and the steps we can all take to overcome our negativity biases. What I love so much about the book is that it prompts you to ask yourself some real questions; many of which we explore in this episode like the importance of knowing your ‘why' and creating white space to listen to our intuition. Translating psychological concepts into daily life is not easy. So in this new reflection episode I look back on the concepts my friend Susanna Halonen taught me back in 2014 on passion. I will examine how I apply her ideas in my own life, where I still struggle and how two years later, I still work on implementation. I highly recommend that you listen to the original episode 8 on passion to remind yourself of the details of her passion theory.  I hope that the reflection episodes help you deepen what you already know and inspire you to apply the concepts in your daily life.
